I'm already drooling as I type this review. Located across the street from H Mart in a small strip mall with ample parking, Shin Myung Gwan was a very happy discovery for me after a popular soondae place rejected us from dining in as they were half an hour from closing. The vibes were immaculate as soon as we stepped inside--warm, dark, and cozy. The aroma of fresh meat on the grill hit our nostrils, and friendly Ajummas greeted us and seated us quickly. While I did see that this place was known for their KBBQ, that night we just wanted a hug in a meal. For me that meant some sort of soup (which ended up being their spicy potato and pork bone soup), while for my husband that meant dolsot bibimbap. We also got a beer to share. I screamed internally when they brought out the banchan. Why, you might ask? Because included in the banchan was an item that I have not seen in many years, and I've dined at plenty of Korean restaurants in the Bay Area and Sacramento. This was acorn jelly, and I can swear I haven't had acorn jelly in over a decade. It doesn't seem like many Korean restaurants make it as part of their banchan rotation, but it has always been one of my favorite banchan items, and I was so excited when I saw it. It tasted delightfully refreshing, as it should be. What we really weren't prepared for was the portion size of our food. Honestly at the price for what we paid, what a steal. My spicy potato and pork bone soup was piled high, and my husband's bibimbap came sizzling and packed with ingredients and rice. I've never had spicy potato and pork bone soup, but I'm so glad I ordered it. Within my giant bowl were tons of pork bones with tender meat that fell off the bones. Tender Napa cabbage, potatoes, perilla leaves and perilla seeds in a delightful savory broth completed the dish. Alas I did not take more photos, because it got messy as I used my hands to enjoy the pork bones, but trust me when I say my bowl was packed. I absolutely could not finish in one sitting, which worked out well, since the day after was our travel day home, and my leftovers heated up nicely for lunch on the road. My husband also had glowing remarks about his bibimbap, and was very much stuffed after as well. We'd love to return and try the KBBQ next time we're in CO. The combo sets looked so enticing. I'm so glad we found a delicious and authentic Korean spot in the Denver area and we will be back!!

Most importantly, Rễ Tre does not feel like Dân Dã 2.0. There is certainly family resemblance, but the newer small plates and bar food give this place its own reason to exist. The khoai kho quẹt may be the best example: french fries with caramelized fish sauce, crispy shallot, and pork belly. It sounds slightly ridiculous and tastes like someone should have thought of it years ago. The wings were another highlight, and a real cocktail program built around Vietnamese and Southeast Asian flavors pushes the restaurant even further into its own lane. Service is still finding its legs a little, which is hardly shocking for a restaurant this new, but nothing about that kept us from having a five-star meal. I am also very curious to see where they take brunch. Bò né skillets, cơm tấm, interesting noodle dishes, Bánh & Butter pastries, and Vietnamese coffee give them a hell of a lot more to work with than another Benedict-and-mimosa menu.
