My sister and I have been a loyal customer of That's The Cake in Arlington for over 15 years, and after this experience, I can honestly say I will never order from them again. Before my sister placed an order, she called the bakery to explain the exact color she wanted. She was instructed to place my order online, select "gray," and then call back with the specific shade so it could be noted on the order. She followed their instructions exactly and specifically requested charcoal gray. She even told them the cake is on the website and told them where it was on the website. She wanted it designed exactly how it was on the website as well. When she arrived today, 7/14/26, to pick up the cake, she was completely shocked. Instead of charcoal gray, the cake was green. Not a darker gray. Not "slightly off." Green. I've attached photos of what we ordered versus what we received because the difference speaks for itself. She had spent over $100 on this cake, and it was for a special occasion. At that point, she didn't have time to wait for it to be re-frosted as the cashier mentioned it would take awhile, so she was forced to take a cake that looked nothing like what we ordered. What made this experience even worse was the way management handled it. The cashier could clearly see how upset my sister was and at least showed compassion. The manager, however, showed no empathy, no accountability, and no concern for the inconvenience his bakery caused. After she left, my sister called me (Candice) completely frustrated - so I called to speak with the manager. Instead of taking responsibility, he claimed there was "no way to verify" that my sister had called to specify the color--even though she was simply following the instructions his bakery gave her. He didn't try to resolve the issue by saying "I'll talk to my staff to see what happened". He COMPLETELY dismissed all accountability of HIS bakery negligence to notate our order of the specific color. Then he went a step further and told me that he personally offered to re-frost the cake himself and that my sister refused. I called and asked my sister if this was true and she said NO. So he blatantly lied to my face. She said the manager spoke only a couple of words to her while she was in the store and never once offered to personally fix the cake. Hearing that he fabricated that conversation was more upsetting than the cake itself. To add insult to injury, the only resolution offered was $20-$25 back on a cake that cost over $100 and was not what I ordered. Even the design/decoration was completely wrong. Businesses make mistakes. We can forgive mistakes. What I cannot overlook is dishonesty, lack of accountability, and poor customer service. If the manager had simply apologized, owned the mistake, and made a genuine effort to make it right, this review probably wouldn't exist. Instead, we were left with the wrong cake, an inadequate refund offer, and a manager who chose to deny responsibility and misrepresent what happened. After 15 years of supporting this bakery, this experience has permanently changed our opinion of the business. The cake color was disappointing. The customer service was unacceptable. I will not be returning, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend That's The Cake to others. Still waiting on that disrespectful so called refund of $25 as well. read more

I am incredibly disappointed with my experience at That's The Cake. I have been a loyal customer for over 15 years, and throughout that time I have recommended this bakery to countless family members, friends, and coworkers because I genuinely believed they made beautiful cakes and valued their customers. Unfortunately, after today's experience, I can no longer recommend them. I picked up my father's birthday cake today, and it looked nothing like what I ordered. The cake was noticeably smaller than the cake shown in the advertised photo, especially considering I paid approximately $120. Even more disappointing, the color was completely wrong. The cake I received was a dull greenish-gray, while the cake in the advertised photo appeared to be a beautiful charcoal gray. When I questioned the color, I was told the photo was actually black, but that simply was not how it appeared in the advertisement. I ordered based on what was shown, and what I received was nothing close to that. The cashier was kind and showed genuine empathy for my concerns. She listened and tried to help, which I appreciated. However, once the owner came out, the entire experience went downhill. His attitude was dismissive and uncaring. Rather than listening to a customer who has supported this business for well over a decade, his response was essentially, "Oh well, there's nothing we can do." There was no apology, no attempt to make things right, no offer of a partial refund, store credit, discount on a future order, or any gesture whatsoever to show that my business mattered. My sister later contacted them by phone to let them know how dissatisfied we were with the cake, and the owner told her that he had offered to re-pipe the cake before I left, but that I chose not to do it, which is a complete and utter lie. What hurt the most wasn't even the cake itself--it was how I was treated. Customer service matters just as much as the product. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. What separates a great business from a poor one is how those mistakes are handled. I wasn't expecting perfection; I was expecting compassion, accountability, and a willingness to find a solution. Instead, I was made to feel like my concerns were an inconvenience. Because I live across town and needed the cake for my father's celebration, I didn't have the time to leave and find another bakery or wait for a replacement. I was essentially forced to take a cake that I was unhappy with because I had no other option. After more than 15 years of loyalty, I expected to be treated like a valued customer. Instead, I left feeling disappointed, frustrated, and honestly hurt. The kindness shown by the cashier was completely overshadowed by the owner's lack of empathy and unwillingness to stand behind his product. Sadly, this experience has permanently changed my opinion of That's The Cake. I can no longer recommend this bakery to anyone. We used That's The Cake for our wedding and could not be happier with how it all turned out. They are a grandmother/grandson duo who own their adorable little shop in Arlington. I had let the initial quote expire because wedding planning is not my strong suit and Nancy was so great helping me get it sorted out. We set up a tasting which is held in the shop with Monte. He walked us through each flavor and helped guide us though the process. It was so much fun, like treat tasting with an old friend. He works really hard making cakes all day and we appreciated him taking his time personally to do a tasting. Some shops just send you samples and call it a day. We chatted about horror movies and sweet treats and it was great. We ended up choosing Monte's favorite which was an almond cake with a raspberry filling and it was a huge hit. Some of my guests who I would consider desert connoisseur's were particularly impressed. Side note: I really liked the Mexican Chocolate and Caramel cake as well but the final choice was left up to my groom. When discussing the look of the cake we let Monte know we were having a moody wedding and the florist would provide flowers. He suggested some black marbling along the bottom to glam it up and it turned out perfect. Unfortunately I was not on site for delivery so I couldn't tell him in person how amazing it was but I was truly blown away with how it turned out. Plenty of frosting. Covered in beautiful purple flowers and edible glitter. What more could a girl want? The cake was fresh and the flavor was perfection. Being a gluten free cake, it was more dense and heavy than what you'd probably imagine, but the texture was still wonderful. I applaud this bakery for making fantastic gluten free products. This cute little cake shop has been here around 7 years and I never knew about it! It's definitely hidden on a side street off the highway. It's owned by a grandma and her grandson. I got to meet both and they are super nice and helpful. The cakes are beautiful and prices are affordable. They can get as creative as you need. They have many cakes on display, but are open to doing whatever deign you can think up! I sampled some of their baked goods. The key to their pre-made goodies is to get there early! They seem to sell out fast! Lots of cake balls, all the chocolate chip cookies, and some of the cake by the slice were gone! So get there when they open or shortly after. I tried there valentine sugar cookies and a chocolate fudge cupcake. Their sugar cookies are clearly made with lots of butter, they were soft, thick, very sweet, and had valentine sprinkles throughout. I liked the light crunch the sprinkles gave to the cookies. I have tired their chocolate chip cookies and I actually liked the sugar ones better. I was surprised by this, bc chocolate chip is my absolute favorite. The chocolate fudge cupcake was really pretty. It had lots of frosting, drizzled in chocolate, and sprinkles on top. The frosting made cupcake a little top heavy! You will love these if you love frosting, buttercream to be exact. The cake was nice, light, and moist. I have also tried their cake balls before and I LOVE them! They are so good. The shop is located in a small strip mall far away from major shopping. You could easily miss it! It is small inside, with only one table which seems like the meeting table for ordering wedding cakes. They do have a Keurig for customers to use! When I stopped by around 11:30am most of their display was empty for cupcakes and cookies. They did have three cakes to choose from: German chocolate, strawberry, and rose water and vanilla. I chose the German chocolate because they are known for being rich, chocolatey, and full of moist flavor. I ordered a slice in a to-go container and I asked for a fork so I could try it immediately in the car. Props to anyone who can wait until they get home. Unfortunately, their german chocolate cake is not decadent. The frosting is light in chocolate flavor and heavy on the chemical tasting powdered sugar. The cake sponge itself was okay, but not to the moistness level I expect for a german chocolate cake. Also, the coconut was severely lacking with only one very small and thin layer. Think of this cake as more of a plain chocolate cake. Overall, the cake here is just okay. The manager on duty took the time to tell me a little more about the Bakery since it was my first time in. I stopped by first thing in the morning yesterday. Unfortunately, they did not have any cupcakes ready so I opted for a slice of German Chocolate cake and a cookie. The German chocolate cake did not have the usual overwhelming chocolate taste which was actually fine with my taste buds. The cake was moist and the icing had a great consistency. My only issue is that there really wasn't that much coconut filling. When I think of German chocolate cake, I think of multiple layers of coconut filling and/or more coconut filling on the top of the cake. I was not a fan of the cookie. It was really dry and hard. The flavor was good, but the consistency was definitely off. I will make an effort to stop by again maybe later on in the day. I stopped in a few months ago for elite week and got to sample a few things. I had drafted a review but I guess COVID19 got me all distracted and I never posted this one. My overall impression is 3 1/2 stars based on the things I tried, but based on what I heard about them from other customers I'm pretty comfortable rounding up for this local business. It's not easy to find, located in a corner shopping center on a high hill against a residential looking area with a tiny sign. GPS is the only reason I successfully got there! I immediately noticed the beautiful cake displays and then noticed there was only one table, so you can't really eat here. At the time of my visit, it was occupied by someone doing a tasting. She shared some past experiences with me and raved about offerings I didn't have an opportunity to try, specifically custom cakes, which I think is their forte. Local fan bases are a great sign! The gentleman at the counter was very kind and accommodating and the small cases had plenty of eye candy. We left with a slice of strawberry jam cake, a wedding cake cupcake and a chocolate chip cookie. My first impression was the icing was much too sweet and the cake wasn't moist enough. Upon further reflection and sampling I have decided that the ingredients are good quality, but you should probably eat them right away, so that's good to know if having them design a cake for an event. In addition to being too sweet, the icing was also too abundant for my taste. I'm sure someone with a superior sweet tooth will enjoy it more than I did. The jam was absolutely delicious! If the strawberry jam cake had a little less icing and three times as much jam, it would have won me over in one bite. I didn't find the wedding cake cupcake to taste like wedding cake but this was very moist and delicious cake, just too rich for my taste with all the icing. But this really showed me their cakes are moist from the get go. The chocolate chip cookie was excellent with a nice, soft texture- perfect! They also had cake pops, a macaron and sheet cake there on my visit, which was a Saturday morning. Based on that customer and other reviews I think your best experience with them will be based on a custom cake for a birthday or other event. It won't prevent me from trying more of their sweets if I happen to be in the area though. read more

There's a queen that dropped an infamous line about cake, can't remember what she said exactly. She probably bragged about how moist and rich in flavor they are. Very much like That's The Cake's Banana Split cupcake. Imagine banana nut bread without the nuts and bread (basically banana cake) topped with a cherry and whipped cream, drizzled with chocolate, and stuffed with a banana slice and more of that delicious whipped cream! It was a little dense/stiff for my liking but it was true to flavor and presented beautifully. Cookies are crumbly. I prefer my cookies chewy and a little undercooked in some cases with a ton of moisture. These cookies were the opposite, but worth $1 and had good flavor. Along side cupcakes, this bakery features cookies like oatmeal and chocolate chip, cake balls, cake by the slice, macaroons, brownies and full blown decorative cakes! The owner, Nancy, is super sweet and smiled the entire time we spoke. Customer service is enough to have me return. She has does a ton of wedding cakes, even featured in D Magazine, D Weddings and more. You'll be mesmerized for sure! They have this cute little complimentary coffee station that was perfect for me on this cold, wet Tuesday. The Keurig has choices for coffee and hot chocolate. Yes, please! Oh yeah... I tried the Yellow butter cake with chocolate frosting cupcake and it was amazing! My wife had the wedding cake cupcake which I also sampled and deemed it fantastic. My daughter had a fresh M&M cookie and was delicious as well. Prices were affordable with cupcakes for under $4 and $1 cookies. They also had cake balls and Texas sheet cake too. All of it looked delicious and the service was courteous and quick. They had wedding and special occasion cakes on display and they were decorated extremely well.
