I stayed at this hotel in Littleton, NH for the first time this week, for two nights. + Location + Convenient + Decent room -- No one helped me to get into the hotel when I arrived. -- They didn't welcome upon arriving at the hotel. -- They didn't provide water bottle(s). -- No one helped me way up the two flights of stairs to my room with my heavy suitcase and there was no elevator and no suitcase cart. -- No one helped me down the 2 flights of stairs with my heavy suitcase when I departed from the hotel. -- The floor in my room was very uneven so that I almost fell down a couple times. -- The lock on my door barely worked. -- The continental breakfast provided was poor. -- the outside of the hotel was in serious need of renovation, paint, etc. read more

The stars are totally for charm of the building which would be 5 stars if that was only thing. *** You will definitely not like the stairs.*** I sat waiting for family to all arrive and every single person going up or down made a comment about them. * From the parking lot there is a flight that is just not right. the height is higher than normal and the board depth is deeper than normal. I felt like I was in quicksand! This flight gets you to ground floor. There are no rooms on this floor. * The next flight is a tight spiral - more like corkscrew. So, if you are not young and in shape, it will be extremely challenging. I practically had to crawl up it with my little rolly suitcase. A video would have been humiliating for sure. * The staff is not necessarily there during day or night. There's no maid in between multiple nights, so it was a good thing they left the utility room open - we had run out of toilet paper (they left us enough for a half a day - no spare!) They will leave your room key in an envelope, but there's nobody there if you need anything. If you are very fit, it is a nice place in the center of Littleton. Thayers has an amazing and friendly staff! They are warm and welcoming ! They are in the perfect location on Main Street with parking in the back with lots of restaurants around them! I liked learning about why the sinks are in some of the actual bed rooms instead of the bathroom. Years ago the showers and toilets use to be communal and you only would have the sinks for washing up in your room. I thought that was so different! read more

After carrying bags up 3 flights of stairs, we arrive to a room with bugs & a floor so warped, it gave us vertigo. After killing 9 bugs In the first 5 minutes of being in the room, we decided to see if more came in after we went for a walk. We soon realized we were going to have to find another hotel. Funky old place with lots of charm and friendly staff. But heating is radiator. It starts banging like it's being hit with a metal pipe at around 1:00 a.m. Goes on for about 5 minutes. Does it again around 2:30 a.m. and again at 3:30 a.m. I finally left so I get find someplace to get some sleep. A hotel can be as funky and charming as it wants, but if it doesn't provide you with a place to sleep it is useless. read more

We have stayed at Thayer's several times over the past few years. We have had a great time each stay. The staff are very friendly, and the location on Main St in Littleton is excellent. The rooms do show their age, but I would prefer that to corporate "blah" conformity that many remodels provide. Maybe a faithful renovation is just too hard. We will keep coming back for a reasonable price for a great location! read more

my hub and I have been going to the thayers Inn for many years and made a reservation for Sept 18. We were brought to room 13 which was so small that the bathroom sink was in our room, not the bathroom. but ok, it was for one night. When we got up in the morning I finally saw the rug which was stained with spots every where. Like a dog kennel. The clerk told us they could have moved us but my question is why would you put someone in a room like that in the first place? especially when so many rooms were not filled. The free 'continental breakfast was a poor joke. Very disappointed and never going back. And why remove the wax figurines to make linen closets? read more

I loved this hotel or did I love the bed? Yes, that bed was delightful ... it was such a comfortable room. I just loved how this hotel was so historic but equipped with modern conveniences. There were a few negatives though: my husband and I were here one night only as we were on spending 3 days riding a rail trail (the xNHAT) so we did not make our reservation. The woman who owned the cycling company did and when we arrived around 4, our rooms were not ready. Check in is at 3. The hotel explained they were busy the night before and that was why. They said one room could be ready at 4:30. The owner was mad and rightly so. Of course, things happen beyond our control but when they do, you make it up to the customer. As dirty as I was, I was too excited to walk around Littleton to steam about this, so we just dealt with it and got checked in around 5. I know the owner gave them a 3-star review on some booking site. I didn't want to give only 3 stars ... 4 might be just a bit much ... I'd give 3.75 if I could. The other thing was the breakfast. It's supposed to start at 7 but didn't start until 8. I don't drink coffee so I didn't care but my husband was annoyed he couldn't get his coffee and didn't want to make it himself in the room. I didn't care for the offerings ... nothing especially healthy and no fruit at all. The last thing was the noise from the street. I was on the first floor in room 1A and there were voices outside, inside, people going up and down the stairs, and a steady stream of cars and then trucks in the morning. I'm a poor sleeper although I did have my trusty eye mask and ear plugs. I didn't feel the need for the a/c but maybe if I had set it on fan, it could have blocked out the noise. Ever go to see a movie you think will stink, but it turns out to be good? Well, I had low expectations going in. This place looked old, and it turns out it is. like almost 200 years old. Four presidents have stayed there including Ulysses Grant. That's old. The floors are like the rolling hills of Nebraska, but that just makes the reality of the history hit home. It's clean, comfortable. The staff is friendly. A family came in and it appeared they booked through a scam site. The lady at the front desk was putting forth real effort to get it sorted it out and get them in their room. She was great. There's a restaurant in the basement that is really nice. That basement started out as a horse stable for travelers and you can still see some original beams. The whole place was cool. There also a lot to walk around the town to see, including a river that you can walk out on to the rocks that inhabit it and watch the sunset. Stay here. Set your expectations low and have be plea surprised. Oh, and walk around and find the podium and microphone Nixon spoke from and take a picture at it. read more

This place seemed to look so cute and Historical, but don't be fooled like we were. This place was disgusting! We paid to have a 2 bedroom suite to guarantee we didn't have to share a bathroom with others and both bed linens were dirty. One bed had weird little red spots and so we went to sleep on the other bed and there was a disgusting green spot on the sheet. We were told there were no other rooms to accommodate us for having a private bathroom so we took new sheets which we were handed and had to put on ourselves. After stripping the bed we found the blanket was dirty. But worst of all the mattress protector was the most disgusting with what looks likes multiple "mystery stains" and what looked like dried blood. And this is not to say the whole keeping the bathroom doors closed because the steam will set off the fire alarms did not go unnoticed because lets be real its just a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Not to mention the original key to our room didnt work, the air conditioner was super dirty and you cant open the window because the glass was broken. We have been waiting to hear back from the company we booked through for weeks now about getting a response regarding a refund from the Inn, but I'm not holding out any hope. All I hope to gain is to warn others. read more

Yeesh. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else. Had to lug our bags up 3 flights of stairs, our room had cobwebs all over everything and hanging from the ceiling fan. Bed was advertised as a queen but was definitely a full. Mattress was sagging so that your feet were above your head. I understand this place is historic but I will never stay hear again and don't recommend it.3 flights of steps no elevator. Had to luge 3 heavy suitcases up 3 flights. My son has a broken bone in foot and every time we go out and what ever we buy has to be lugged up three flights and my son is on crutches and has navigate these steps. Floors are uneven and badly buckled on all floors. Floor in our room goes up and down. Poor Wi-Fi at best and now we've been told Wi-Fi is completely out. Stayed for one night and won't be back. As I got ready for bed I discovered that my room had no hot water. I left the tap running thinking that it might take a while and called the front desk. They came and checked my room and said they would contact maintenance. In the morning there was still no hot water. Tap water in the NH mountains is Ice cold! My husband and I own vacation rentals at the beach in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. I would never rent any of our cottages in the state that our room was in at The Thayer Inn! There was water stained and mildewed wallpaper in the bathroom, a joint compound patch above the tub, bugs crawling on the walls and sills, cobwebs on the curtains and rod, water damaged ceiling tiles in the lobby just outside our room door, cracked drywall where shoddy work was done installing the light fixture just to the side of room door and no Wi-Fi even though they advertised it. While we were there, there was a wedding reception going on. I was flabbergasted that they actually set up the banquet tables in the narrow lobby, where guests enter and exit! We had to dodge the wedding guests while they were filling up their plates! I'm sure they thought that was pretty tacky as well. The decor in the room is Goodwill finds or curbside grabs! I highly recommend that you find a charming Inn to stay at, not this place! Not clean and staff rude!!! Oh BTW we paid $219 a night!!!! When we checked out a day early, we were told that this room is requested all the time! Lol Do yourself a favor....just don't book here! Go somewhere else!!! read more

Just got back from spending the most marvelous 3 days/2 nights at this fantastic and unique Inn! From the friendly welcome by the young gentleman at the desk, to our charming kitchenette (2nd floor), and the great innkeeper (didn't get his name) who wowed my 9 year old grandson with a gift and talk about coins since he heard us discussing his love of old coins...oh, I could go on and on and on! Loved the fact it was right on Main Street with plenty of shops and restaurants, and a wonderful river walk out back for our dog. Ended up here after our Airbnb fell through- what a phenomenal surprise! If you enjoy warm inviting rooms with an abundance of character...you won't be disappointed. It's definitely old but it made our stay that much more enjoyable. Staff was very nice, the art work on the walls is fun to explore, and the beds are as comfortable as any Marriott. Old school charm! Class! Hospitality! Great food! Super clean rooms! My husband and I just stayed here for the weekend with our group of friends. We were greeted with a smile and the inn was decked out to the max in holiday decor! Wow! It was just like stepping into a "Hallmark" Christmas movie! The food was fabulous (especially the prime rib). I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to step back in time a bit. The town is also filled with great little spots. Upon arrival, we had to walk up seversl flights of stairs. The old fashioned bathtub was difficult to ste p in or out. (No bars or handles when stepping in or out as tub was very high) Flights of stairs were very steep. This hotel is not recommended in my opinion for people over 60 due to safety issues. We asked to opt out of our stay but had to pay 50% of our total fee for 2 nights. read more

This place cannot be operating to state building code requirements. Completely outdated. Old wiring that is on the outside of the walls. The floors are literally cracked and bowed well beyond normal settling issues. It is passed the charm of an old building and needs some serious structural work. Had to practically climb a mountain to get into the old claw foot tub in the bathroom. Room smelled of smoke, which was deeply imbedded in the old and stained carpeting as well as the old and gaudy wallpaper. Would not recommend to anyone. This inn has all the historic charm you are looking for--none of the rooms are the same...the floors are like a roller coaster ride...I'm pretty sure all the doors are crooked + you just might run into a ghost or two if you're lucky. Stayed here for 2 nights + the rooms were clean + comfy--did have some trouble with the AC unit but other than that the room was lovely. There was a small tv, antique like furniture a decent sized closet + bathroom. The staff was super friendly + helpful and WAIT FOR IT... yeah you can check out any VHS from their library. Epic. They have a continental breakfast that includes your basics cereal, bagel, coffee/tea, juice + fruit. There is a cute porch you can sit on and watch all the bugs run into the neon sign hanging right in front.... If that is your thing. There is also a cupola that you can visit--but watch out it is like climbing into hell... SO HOT but worth the view. There are a couple rooms set up to show what it would look like back in the day--- and although I appreciated the set up the manikins are FREAKY looking + I had nightmares about them all weekend. If you want to stay somewhere completely unique, where there the guests might include those who have passed on + in an inn that oozes history this is your kinda place. read more

My Brother had a medical emergency while staying at the Thayers Inn and called 911. When the first responders arrived, they found both doors locked and called the listed after hours number several times, but no one answered. They ended up breaking into the Inn which delayed their getting to my Brother who died at the Thayers Inn. read more

This is our new favorite hotel and we plan to return many times! The inn is beautiful and brimming with old-fashioned charm- built in 1843! It's very comfortable and clean. We felt very safe from COVID here. And the owner and receptionists' hospitality and friendliness were above and beyond. WARNING NOT WELCOMING AT ALL OWNER RUDE and confrontational DAVID I attempted to book a wedding anniversary stay for my husband and I today. Upon arrival: The front of the building is antiquated and unkept but holds "history" for being one of the "great hotels" in the Littleton area. There is a Huge lack of parking Because it is situated on main Street, with metered parking, albeit one particular parking space which is directly in front of the building. MARKED: RESERVED FOR GUEST CHECKING IN. There is zero signage where the entry is, AND there are multiple entrances. Which makes it confusing for somebody who has never visited the area/building. I proceeded to enter the building at the wrong entrance, to the left, utilizing the parking space that is marked for check-in directly in front of the building. Upon realizing that I was in the wrong entrance I turned around to leave the building, there was a hallway that is adjacent to the entryway I took that connects to the foyer of the building. I overheard a male voice resonating through the hallway, describing me parking in front of the building, and complaining about me leaving my (sick) child in the vehicle (He's six and there is no New Hampshire state law saying you cannot leave your child in the vehicle) However he was verbally expressing his disgust, which could be audibly heard by myself as well as other patrons within earshot. Feeling appalled by his conversation, I just headed towards my car and decided it's best not to book a reservation, ESPECIALLY if this is how they are going to speak about their guests! I proceeded to keep walking towards my car, while the owner (DAVID) who was OBVIOUSLY individual complaining inside the building because now he was posturing/gesturing outside of the building near my vehicle complaining in the same manner/tone (aggressive). Screaming "ma'am ma'am" at me repeatedly in a vehement tone of voice, He made it clear and present that he was confrontational as opposed to welcoming, judging by his body posture and scowling face, accompanied by verbal diarrhea, I wanted no part of it, so I ignored him as I approached my vehicle to leave this confrontational situation he was about to embark on. He proceeded to barrage me, by saying not to ignore him, (Because I did not respond to him at all) That if I did this again he would have me towed, instead of greeting me saying can I help you ma'am. When he didn't provoke a response out of me, He continued to try to barrage me as I tried to leave. He was hollering at the top of his lungs "shame on you shame on you for leaving your child in the vehicle" I rolled down my window and said I haven't said anything to you, Do you feel like your behavior is acceptable? He continued with his tirade, and displaying very verbal and aggressive behavior posturing towards my vehicle. Saying that I should apologize for parking there. Um...ok The sign says specifically reserved for individuals checking in and making reservations. Be forewarned !! This individual and business owner, is belligerent, confrontational, and completely irrational. I typically do not leave reviews, especially negative ones, I would rate this place zero stars if it gave me the option, the one star is not even deserving of this type of behavior. Realistically this owner is frazzled over a one parking space situation, And should look into folding his hand of cards when it comes to being a business owner. The Thayer Inn has changed hands roughly 2 years ago. The previous reviews do not apply any longer. The hotel is beautiful now. The have made many improvements and it shows The rooms have new mattresses and linens. They are clean and super comfy. We experienced Room 1 and it faced the front of the hotel on to Main Street. The positive is the sweet girl who helped me carry my luggage up 2 flights of stairs and the woman who helped carry them back down the next day. But, the inn/hotel is not clean. Well, I saw the new Harry Potter movie on opening night, and as intrigued as I am of Hogwarts, it doesn't compare to this hotel. Built in 1843, it offers small town charm and a flash back to slow-living, pre-Civil War days in New England. There are three floors complete with uneven door jambs, undulating floors, creaking boards, and a perpensity to bring your mind back to a time where modern technology was the Pony Express. Our room, #10 was awesome. Antiquated wall paper and furniture make the atmosphere really cool. We only paid $90 a night, which for the weekend was very reasonable. Quite a refreshing alternative to the typical places to stay. No, it's not an all inclusive Marriott but if you like charm and personality, Thayer's Inn is a must of an experience. As they say, "they don't build them like this anymore". It was like a step back into history and the room I had was small but clean and very comfortable. The staff, particularly Arthur, was gracious and helpful. The location is perfect for walking around town. I will make it a point to stay here again whenever I visit. Yeah, the new hotels are fancy and all but paper thin walls and noises from other rooms makes those kind of places big zeroes. No such issues at Thayer's Inn. When I'm up north visiting my family, I stay at Thayer's for a variety of reasons First of all, the folks who work at Thayer's are possibly the friendliest and most helpful hotel people I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. The location is great. I love staying smack-dab in the center of the "big city" so that I can stroll to my heart's content. Also, the beautiful and melodic Gale River is right in back of the Inn. I like to go for walks after dark (yeah, I'm wild like that) and just about all the streets in Littleton have sidewalks AND streetlights. I kid you not. A true North Country miracle. The Thayer's is a lovely place to stay. Immaculate, pretty, friendly, safe, fun, historical, and well-located. Yes, it's in an old building, and that means that there are some quirky idiosyncrasies that come along with charming old places. Also, I'm assuming that you're not up in northern NH looking for perfect, high-end luxury (and if you are, keep driving like 200 miles in any direction to find that super swanky place). They charge half at the time of booking, another half at check in, somehow I missed that, so when I saw there are two charges on my credit card statement, I dispute that. That was honest mistake. I went to White mountain 5 times this summer, I always pay my bill in full on time. Image my surprise when an angry call I received from Thayer desk, calling me theft of service, threaten me to pay otherwise they will take an action if I don't cancel the dispute. I will gladly call my credit card company to rectify the problem, once I know what is going on. It is Honest mistake, no need to threaten me. I am very surprised they treat customer this way. This place is old school charming and they score extra points for being pet friendly. We came up for a winter weekend getaway and loved being able to bring our dogs. It's an historic site, so don't expect modern and trendy rooms. This place is old which is part of the draw. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but could use a little TLC. Nothing was broken or didn't work, just needs a little touch up on minor things like paint and wallpaper. The building itself is fun to walk through and there's a lot of displays with local historical items, paintings, and photos. The location is convenient and you can walk to all the local shops and restaurants. The best part is the staff, you won't find a friendlier staff anywhere else. I know many people like this inn but my experience was not good. The room was dark and cold, equipped only with a tiny space heater. The WiFi was extremely slow and I couldn't access my work account. No hot water in the shower topped a great stay off. When I complained to the the front desk, the gentlemen became hostile, telling me I was rude to him and refuse to accept a FedEx shipment of some important items a I left at home. read more

I loved it, maybe because I appreciate historic buildings. Our room was one of the updated rooms which meant the matress was very comfy, but the room still had the old world charm! The friendly young lady who checked us in talked us into spending $20. more for a larger updated room which was well worth it. She let us look at both rooms before deciding. We ate dinner at the restaurant and I'd say it was good. The next day we climbed up to the cupola, very cool..don't miss it, but only if you love that type of thing! I've stayed here twice in the last couple of years while driving up through Littleton. It's a lovely and historic building with some New England charm. The service varies, depending on who is working at the front desk, but always minimally decent. I'd liked to have enjoyed this more. Right in the middle of town. Ample parking. And a classic old hotel, with history. But they're odd. Okay, they warn you that you need to close bathroom door while showering, because steam sets off their smoke alarms. (Huh? You can't upgrade those alarms?) Good thing it wasn't an issue -- I had a shower that was lukewarm, at best. No steam. Their heat doesn't work either, so they give you a space heater. Which is okay. Capper for me though was the day I was checking out. (Btw hotel was EMPTY. My car was only one in their lot). I was trying to get in a run so I told the guy at desk I was pressed for time and "might need an extra 5-10 minutes" past their 11:00 checkout. He told me "no, we don't do that." Like, wut? Can you TRY? Anyway, it's only like $100 a night (although they keep 1/2 your money if you cancel...again...customer service ha) so can't complain. I just think they could do a few small things, and could justify higher rates. read more
