The Chamberlain House B&B

The Chamberlain House B&B

Our recent week-long visit to Bristol, Maine, was anchored by a 6-night stay at The Chamberlain…read moreHouse in Round Pond. Our spirits were buoyed by owners, Shari & Paul Cunningham, whose wonderful property includes a view of the harbor in Round Pond, perennial gardens, old stone walls, and adjacent forests. We were made to feel right at home in the restored historic (1700's era) farmhouse, with its common rooms for reading, visiting, dining, and relaxing downstairs, as well as its five beautifully decorated guest bedrooms upstairs. Shari is an outstanding cook, serving hearty, nutritious, artfully presented breakfasts every morning. She incorporates fresh eggs from her flock of lively hens whose happy clucking can be heard throughout the day. We look forward to our next trip when we can once again savor the scrumptious frittatas, homemade blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, and delicious fruit cups at the dining room's table that looks over the sloping backyard fields and the ocean beyond. Shari was willing to accommodate our request for specific dietary needs. At the top of your "Midcoast Maine Must Do" list should be a stay with Shari and Paul at The Chamberlain House.

Incredible breakfast of Frittata, sausage and fresh blueberry muffins. Room was great and had an incredible shower. Everything clean, clean, clean. Everything about this place expresses the happiness and pride of the owner couple. Highly recommended. Maine at its very best.

On a holiday visit to Portland, Maine, we went to Boothbay Harbor as a day excursion. This little…read moretown is one of our favorites in Maine. With the heavy holiday traffic, we were very lucky to find a parking space. Once we found a spot, we were off to find a place for lunch as we, by that time, were very hungry. We literally stumbled upon this place. We try to avoid "tourist trap" restaurants, but in this case, we went in because we were ready to eat anything. We are very glad we made this choice. We were greeted by Heather who pointed out the specials and after some discussion revealed that she was a local who knew the area well. Our lunch choices were excellent. The Oyster Po Boy and the Cod sandwich were full of flavor and certainly fresh. One note not to miss. The dining room has large windows offering beautiful views of Boothbay Harbor, which in itself is worth a special mention. We could view the Spruce Point Resort which we enjoyed on our last visit to Boothbay Harbor, a real treat for us. Here is a shoutout to Heather for her great attitude, which I imagine is difficult to do in the rush of the summer tourist crush.

However the female bartender ignored our presence. Several other people entered the bar to get drinks and go out on the deck with them. We were told by the bar back to wait in line behind the people that came in after us. Kind of weird so I said well that's not fair as there are now ten people in line that came in after us. He told the bartender and she poured our wine and printed out tab and sat it out front of us without saying a word. I paid the top and left her a tip. It was beautiful weather so we decided to go sit on the covered front patio in the Adirondack chairs. About five minutes later, the bartender came outside and reprimanded us out front of several other patrons for taking our drinks out of the bar. We were very embarrassed, however, complied, and got up and went inside to the bar to finish our wine. Not sure why she's single to us out. I will not be returning to this establishment.

This region is so fortunate to have such an amazing take out option. In terms of service, quality…read moreand price, this place has no local equal. They are open 5 days a week, and offer a (mostly) regular, rotating menu that cycles through differing themes: Mexican, Pizza, Burgers, etc. Unlike most places that try to do too much and can't deliver consistent quality, VIP keeps their rotating nightly menu small enough that every single offering is of the highest quality and has a distinctly unique twist. I have now tried the burgers, pizza, tacos and enchiladas - all phenomenal. They have a lot of seafood options, which I don't eat, but others I know have raved about it. Portions are on the smaller side (as is the price), but satisfying and filling. For example, the burger bun is the size of the actual burger it contains, so you don't get loaded down with extra carbs, like most places. And the meals always come with an excellent side, such as homemade mac & cheese, or (amazing) beans and rice. I've been visiting this region for over 40 years, and often lamented at the lack of good, affordable food. VIP is the solution I never expected, but I am so grateful they opened. Their format is to offer early pre-ordering on Facebook each day, to ensure they don't run out of your preferred meal, but they can also accommodate on-the-spot orders (not the recommended method, as they are very popular, and stuff does run out). This format is an added bonus during the COVID crisis, where social distancing is still highly advised. I would eat here every day, if cost and calories were not a consideration. There are plenty of food pics on their Facebook page. They can be found one property past Dee's Variety (going South), just at the turn onto Huddle Road, on Rt 130 (Bristol Road). www.facebook.com/visitvip/
