These guys may do gorgeous work but I'll never know 'cuz... Friday - October 13th - I visited the shop, showed them the two cushions I needed copied (which "Angel" then measured), picked out the leather I wanted, and was told it would take 2 weeks for the leather to arrive and 3 weeks for the cushions to be finished. When I got back home again, I immediately paid (online) for the deposit requested by the emailed invoice I received. Friday - November 10th - Having heard nothing from Angel for the past 4 weeks, I called up to check status. Nobody answered the phone even though it was the middle of the afternoon. I left a voicemail, which was never answered. Today - November 15th - I called again. Nobody answered the phone even though it was 11:39 am on a week day. My voicemail informed them I was going to show up in person this afternoon if they didn't return my call first. Today - mid-afternoon. Having received no response to my morning voicemail, I showed up in person. The CLOSED sign was up in the middle of the afternoon and the door was locked but the lights were on and I could see Angel standing inside the lobby. He let me in. A brief unpleasant conversation followed. They'd been away for several days so they couldn't answer the phone or return messages. (?!?!?) Worse still, they hadn't even STARTED the three weeks of work he had told me about on October 13th! And they were going to need the chair itself at some point, which he'd failed to mention on the 13th. Methinks the family had some kind of crisis come up which they could have communicated to their customers instead of (apparently!) assuming all of us would suck up the delays, unanswered phone calls, unanswered voicemails, etc.! I gave my daughter my Louis the 16th chair that was my grandmothers. I had reupholstered it several times when I was growing up and gave it to her after college. She didn't like the old dirty fabric that was on it, so she began searching for a place to redo the chair. It's very, very expensive to upholster so she kept getting really high estimates. She lives in SF which would cost more, She found this place in San Jose that was pretty reasonable compared to the others, so she went for it. Of course she chose one of the most expensive fabrics. Work took about a week @ $45 a chair and the quality was good. Pros: Good workmanship, decent pricing, good padding on the chairs (way more comfortable than before). I recently had my chair recovered and we couldn't be happier with the finished product. Great service too - they picked up and returned my chair. In fact, they picked up my chair to begin work on the same day that I called to tell them I wanted to move forward! I got one other price from a guy who does upholstery work on the side with no storefront. He was more expensive and his yardage estimate was too high (he did it based on pictures, whereas the owner here comes and personally inspects your piece). That matters when you are using expensive upholstery fabric! I will definitely use Alameda Upholstery next time I need anything recovered. read more

I recently got my couch cushions covered. I dropped the fabric and the cushions off on a Friday afternoon with the expressed promise they would be done the following Thursday or Friday at the latest. This was important to me because I had guests driving through that were expecting to crash on my couch...so I couldn't give them a cushionless couch with box-springs in their backs. I gave them a 4 because I was always having to track them down. I called Wednesday, no response and left a message, no call back. Thursday I called again and Susan was at lunch, so she as given a message to call me back. I called an hour later and she answered to advise that there may be a delay because the seamstress' favorite machine had broken. I was polite, but very concerned and expressed my situation again. I told her I needed a response in the AM because I would need to make other accommodations for my friends. I called the next morning at 10 AM and was pleased to hear they would be ready by 330 PM that day. I arrived at that time exactly and they were waiting for me. I wish I could add a 1/2 star for quality, because the work was impeccable! Everything was perfectly stitched and fit my couch to a T. I couldn't ask for a better job and there is a TON of fabric left over so I think I'm going to get the whole couch done with the remainder. I will be referring this company out to anyone who is thinking of upholstery work. I noticed some people talking about rudeness. I did sense that they might not want to be bothered by idiots so I just went in there a little extra polite and they responded with politeness and courtesy so I think you get what you give. The gentleman in there can't be bothered with most, doesn't really know what is going on and may be a bit rude...so just ask for Susan. She knew what was going on and was always more than polite. I forgot to add....another store was quoting me $800 for these cushions, they did it for $494 (includes tax) so the price was definitely right! read more
