Do not go to Contempo Upholstery! They use poor quality materials that do not last very long. We did not get a proper invoice from them with a warranty statement from them - which makes getting compensation later impossible. When we contacted them later, we were told the family business was sold and was under new management by another relative, so they would not honor any problem with past projects. The owner refused to negotiate a reasonable settlement stonewalling all our requests and refusing to talk with us. We asked the Better Business Bureau to mediate, but he refused to discuss the matter further. Beware!! read more

Thanks to all the yelp and I found Contempo Custom Upholstery. Also thanks to all the wonderful reviews that helped me to pick Contempo Custom Upholstery to redo the dining table chairs. It took me two years to decide to fix the old worn out dining table chairs. I was debating whether I should get a new set of chairs that can match the dining tables or simply just get a new dining table and chairs. I know that will cost me a lot of money. So, I gave up those ideas. Finally after much research, I found Contempo and I am glad I made the right decision! The owner, Derek is friendly and helpful. I sent him emails for several time and he responded back in a day or two. Very easy to work with. When I took my chair in, he helped us to make the decision easily by showing us what will look good. The price is reasonable. It took them about 2-3 weeks to get the fabric. Then they came to my house to pick up the rest of the chairs, it only took them less than 2 days to finish it. They even delivered it back to my home. My mother in law is extremely happy of how the dining chairs look now. Attached are the pictures of the old one with worn fabric and the cushion has collapsed. Got a referral from a friend to this company and Derek specifically. Re-uphostery is never cheap, so don't expect low prices from these guys but they charge a very fair price and do a high-quality job. They replicated everything on our sofa including the piping. You can text them a pic of your item and they will estimate labor cost and tell you roughly how many square yards of material is needed. Then you come into their office and select material (prices vary a lot depending on the material you choose). They have a ton of books to look at - you'll def find what you like. Then they pick up the piece of furniture, do the work and deliver it to your house. Awesome. One thing to note: they do not take credit cards. Only cash or checks. read more

Contempo Upholstery (located on Lewis Rd. in San Jose) just delivered my newly upholstered chairs this morning. I'd used them before to make slipcovers for larger club chairs in my living room and they do a fantastic, quality job. Their labor costs are reasonable, much less than Calico Corners. I send them a picture and they give me a quote. I choose my own fabric online (my favorites are fabricguru.com, decorativefabricsdirect.com, and patiolane.com) and then call them to pick up my furniture. They wear masks and practice distancing. My chairs are gorgeous and well done (I have some upholstery experience). Cost for the 2 chairs pictured was $500 even. I bought my own 7 yards of fabric. When I asked Derek Lu how business was he said "very slow". My chairs were ready 2 days after pick up. I'm hopeful that anyone who needs to repair or refresh furniture in your house will consider Contempo Upholstery; I want this business to survive the SIP. I found this company on yelp. I had a 50-60 year old chair and ottoman that was my grandfathers. It was in very bad shape, no cushion left in the ottoman and torn.(BUT in amazing shape for its age!!) After I came into possession of it, I called them and they came out right away for an estimate! The lady explained recycled leather verse new and so I went with recycled leather saving me hundreds!! It took a few weeks to get the leather in since it was on back order, but the lady called me weekly with updates. After picking it up, it was not even gone a week and they called to deliver it! No extra charges for it at all!!! The chair and ottoman came back in such an amazing state, I actually cried!! I wish I had the before picture. She came to our home in the evening a few days later and gave us a reasonable estimate. My husband called Linda about a week later to confirm that we would like to move forward with the job. He has left at least two messages with her and not received a call back. He also called the main business number and was not able to reach anyone. I needed 4 old antique chairs redone. A friend referred me to Contempo because she said they have the best prices and can get things done pretty quickly and efficiently. I called Linda on 8/13 and told her I needed it done in 3 weeks because I had family coming from out of town. I was able to get an appointment with Linda the same day and placed my order. It took about week and half for the fabric arrive due to production but soon as my chair were picked up I had them back in about 5 days. I am very happy with the quality of the work. I researched for a while before coming to Contempo. I contacted and received pricing from over ten upholstery shops and Contempo was the most reasonable. The most extreme difference were shops that priced themselves at twice as much as Contempo for the same work. Linda, the owner, was even willing and able to pick up my armchairs to be redone. I looked for the fabric I liked and supplied Linda with the fabric. And I requested the styling be the same. The final product was beyond what I expected. There are craftsmen still in this day and age. Linda works pretty hard and emails often late at night, around 11 or midnight. These are good people who have been doing upholstery for three decades since 1970s. They do an awesome job. If you are MEAN, go elsewhere, please. If you work with them, you will be amazed. read more

We had two "cushy" chairs done in a complicated print fabric. Contempo perfectly laid down the fabric so the pattern details arranged really nice along major seams and angles of the chairs and the two chair are "twins" in their patterning. The "cushy-ness" was still in the chairs. On time pick up and delivery and a fair and decent price for a job well done. What more can I say except give them your business! We will again. read more

How is this place still in business??!! So unprofessional! I placed my order over 4 weeks ago, was told that these things take about 3 weeks total, and they still have not even communicated with me about even picking up my furniture to do the work! AND they have my deposit, which I am worried that I will never see again, considering that they don't even return your phone calls. I'm concerned that this one is going to require a trip to small claims court just to get my deposit back, when all I wanted was some pillows and slipcovers without a hassle. What is going on over there?! So disappointed! UPDATE -- Sept 23rd -- I am amending my review from earlier. Kim (perhaps the owner???) called soon after my orginal Yelp review and did a lot to try to make things right, including knocking some of the cost off of my order as well as finishing my order in 1 week, which was CERTAINLY needed! The furniture was delivered today, and I have to say, the workmanship is exquisite! I'm going to go as far as to say that my mother is is going to use them to recover a chair that she has. Although it has been over a year since I have had my pieces reupholstered at Contempo, I was recently referring their services to some friends and wanted to give them a shout out on Yelp. I had found them on Yelp, and decided to give them a try, despite some less than optimal reviews regarding communication and lead times. I am quite happy that I did. Linda was prompt in getting back to me anytime that I called or texted her, and my sectional sofa and 2 chairs were completed in less than 3 weeks. I believe the furniture was picked up the 1st week of November 2013, and she promised me that I would have them back before Thanksgiving as I requested - sure enough, they delivered them the Sunday evening before. I was happy with the turn-around time, especially given that it seemed to be a busy time of the year for their business. Having priced some other upholstery shops, I felt that the rates were reasonable, and if one orders the fabric through them, they sell it at cost. In fact, one of the fabrics I chose was one that I had found online (not from one of their books) and they ordered the fabric and charged me at their cost. Linda spent a bit of time with me going through the books to find fabric for my sectional sofa. I showed her a rather expensive fabric that I loved but was not willing to cough up the $$$ since it was for a family room and would get heavy use - she patiently worked with me to find something similar, but more reasonably priced. They did a nice job on everything, and as I stated at the start, I have already referred a few friends here who are looking to have some things upholstered. Many years ago I had Contempo recover my couch and two chairs. I had kept the receipt and when the chairs needed to be recovered I just called them. I talked with The owner. I was very helpful and we were able to set up an appointment to come to my condo so he could look at the chairs and see if he could help. He said that they didn't have the same fabric so he would go back to the shop and see it they had something that would match to color of the chairs. We communicated after that visit by text after that call. They came out to my house again with fabric samples and then took the chairs with them to recover with the fabric that I chose. I read many of these reviews before working with Contempo early this year. Linda was very accommodating and helped me sort through many different kinds of fabric before we found one that would work and could be ordered in a large enough quantity to cover all my living room furniture. Linda said it would take three weeks to get the furniture covered, and I asked if she could take one piece at a time since that was a long time to go without ANY furniture. Linda understood and said that if we waited for the fabric to come in first, they could do everything in one week - so I agreed. When they picked up my furniture it was very casual, no real warning, they just called and asked if I was home on a Sunday afternoon and then popped by, the guys were really nice about how difficult it is to get in/out of my apartment with couches. It took more than a week to hear from Contempo and multiple email/phone calls to find out my couches would be a week late - but this was before I discovered an error that needed to be fixed. I had asked for nailhead trim instead of piping on the arms of two of the three pieces (a couch and large armchair), but through a miscommunication with Linda, ALL THREE pieces had BOTH piping and nailhead trim on them, which I've never seen done on any piece before. They offered to order more fabric and fix it, and were kind in-person, but on the phone, rather than being apologetic Linda complained to me about having to spend another $200 on fabric. Anyhow, a process which I was originally told would take one week has now taken more than three (and I've had no furniture in the meantime), and was very frustrating. However, the finished product came out looking very good and was an exceptional value compared the the other quotes I'd received. I would recommend Contempo with some cautionary advice: In order to avoid frustration - if you are considering using Contempo, I'd take the following steps: 1 - If you have ANY changes to the design of your furniture, print out pictures that you can hand to Linda so that it's very clear what you would like changed. Then reiterate in an email to them and include the same pictures. Maybe even print out detailed instructions for Linda to attach them to the order form. 2 - Understand that they will be a slow to communicate. Expect the work to take an extra week (or more) over what you were quoted. They really do have the best pricing around - so know that in that great deal you're getting, the service won't be as fast as other places. 3 - I HIGHLY recommend you take the time to go in and inspect your furniture before it's delivered, particularly if you are making any changes aside from just the fabric - this will allow them to make any changes needed before delivery, so you can be sure when you get your furniture back you'll be happy with it. read more

Soon after contacting Linda the last time she was very apologetic and promised she will do everything she can to ensure the sofa will be received ASAP. Linda explained to me about the many unfortunately and unforeseen circumstances that occurred. I think even Linda was overwhelmed with all that had happened and is truly sorry about our experience. True to her words the sofa and chair were delivered literally 1 hr ago. The set looks great and though there were couple small chips on the leg they were quick to fix the issues to the best of their ability. Not only that, soon after I received my sofa set Linda called and left a message. She not only offered a discount to express her regret about the whole experience but will also give us three pillows for free! I am very impressed by Linda's willingness to ensure our experience will get back to a 5* level. I am now eagerly waiting to see the pillows when they are done.
