In the Hamptom's where less is more! By that I mean you get less but pay lots more. We arrived promptly for our 7pm Saturday night reservation and were immediately seated in the bar area...what??? This 5 top table was wedged in the corner yet the bar was so busy that bar patrons were backing in to our chairs... unacceptable. So we asked the Jr. maitre D to try and relocate us which they surprisingly did into a back room with a table viewing the street. Started with Tequila rocks, a Hendrick's martini ($22) and nice glass of Sancerre ($20). Ordered some Appetizers of Lobster bisque which actually had slivers of Lobster (6.5), an undersized Beet & Orange salad (4), delicious oysters & buratta (na) On to the entrees. 1 less than crispy Local Long Island duck (8) a weak tasting & 2 portion controlled orders of only 3 Sea Scallops ($48), 2 orders of the skinny flounder meunière (6) Overall, while the service was outstanding the food didn't measure up. Unfortunately, it's Typical of Highfalutin locations where tourists make up a large percentage of their business and they don't have to rely on repeat customers because there is another guest waiting for your table. My visit is based off of a bar visit only! I have a book about touring the Hamptons and and there when I have time I go through the book and pick out some stuff to check out that the book recommends. The American Hotel bar was one of the places to visit. I walked in and the atmosphere was quiet when I went in and spotted the bar pretty easily. I sat down and had one on one service from the bartender since I was the only one there. I don't drink alcohol anymore but recently I have been having non alcoholic beers here and there and the bartender had one in stock so he poured me a non alcoholic beer. It cost me $15 including leaving a decent size tip for a drink since I normally tip $1 a drink when I go out. It's a more swankier place so I expected a higher price. The bar seems to have a good selection for alcohol drinking people and if there were more people there it might have been a more fun atmosphere, for me it was more of a relaxing, take a few minutes to get myself together atmosphere which I appreciated. Maybe one day if I've got more money I'll spend the night as a guest in this hotel. read more

This is a review of the hotel only. It's creepy as fuck. Seriously, like haunted house movie level creepy. Everything creaks. Everything is old. Weird paintings in the wall. I swear to God I thought I would see my first ghost. This isn't kitch or cute, this place is downright scary. I went to bed praying I wouldn't wake up with a cold dead hand on my throat. With the exception of large cities, it's difficult to find an actual 5-Star dining experience. An owner has to make an enormous commitment to provide not only the best food available but also create an environment that is memorable enough for patrons to return regularly. The other element, in my opinion, that sets a truly great restaurant apart is the staff. I have to say that the restaurant at the American Hotel comes through in all categories. I've been going here for years (to the restaurant). Tonight my husband and I were seated at the back patio, which was fine. The food was good, not great, but the service was agonizingly slow. Okay, not the end of the world. However, after the waiter was clearing the appetizers, he gave me back my dirty fork. !!!!!! I asked for a clean one, but at these prices, I was surprised. worse than that, we sat near a server's station, and the waitress was constantly scraping the food from one dirty plate to another (her apron was also filthy). I mentioned to the waiter that I didn't feel it was appropriate for patrons to have to see that, and he just walked away. I would never sit on the patio again, and I hope I get a different waiter next time (if I return) and that's debatable. read more

Typically the only reliable fine dining in the Hamptons. Tonight all dishes (steak and chicken club and Caesar salad) were great. Issue was the crab cake appetizer was poor. The crab was not fresh -- frankly the crab cake reeked. Will come back because this is an anomaly. Message: if you don't have fresh crab, take the crab cake off the menu! read more

The caliber of service and food at your establishment is bar none, so it's strange that you'd choose to book-end that experience with the slovenly choice of messy tinfoil. French maitre d is incredibly rude and makes guests feel diminished. The woman in my party had a diabetic alert dog. We notified the restaurant of our accommodation prior to showing up. We even asked to be seated in the back garden. We show up and unbeknownst to us the back garden is closed. He proceeds to tell us we can't sit in the main dining room with her service dog (illegal but she did not want to create a scene) so we're sat in the front porch, completely fine. We sit and we're ordering and ask for water for the dog as well. We're told no "we have no obligation to give your dog water. And make sure he is kept under the table." My guest was horrified. She's had diabetic alert dogs for 20 years and never been treated such a way. If you have a disability or something that would require you to have an accommodation, please do not dine here. They either won't accommodate or will make you feel incredibly bad for having such accommodation. And anyone who supports those with disabilities should not dine in this establishment either. read more

The American Hotel's timeless classic allure, strong libations, wonderful food and professional service have kept us coming back over the past 20 plus years. We stayed at the hotel one winter (pre Yelp) as well and enjoyed the clawfoot bathtub and other vintage touches. Most recently enjoyed lunch of lobster BLT, Guinness on tap and macadamia nut pie - pure bliss. This restaurant has become my favorite place to go when I want an elegant but not stuffy place to splurge. I have taken my mom here quite a few times now since we were able to get out again, and we have never been disappointed. This place is amazing, and the food and service is awesome! The last time we were here we could not sit in the atrium which is my favorite place to sit. It is absolutely beautiful, but since this place is so popular, I discovered that even during a week day you should make reservations. We were able to be seated in their outdoor garden area, which was also beautiful. The service in this area was exactly the same...friendly, professional, and relaxed. The food here is also excellent. So delicious and the presentation is just as perfect as the food. If you want an elegant lunch, or dinner, this is the place to go. The staff will make you feel welcome the moment you walk through the door, and will do whatever it takes to ensure you have a wonderful time while you're there. As far as the prices here, it all depends on what you order. Some items are more expensive than others but I think it's definitely worth it. This is not an every day restaurant, but a place to go for a special day or night out. read more

Unless they have unreal happy hour that I don't know about, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for just an every day dinner. Like other yelp reviews, I agree that the menu items are a bit over priced. But again, you're in Southhampton. Our server spoke English, but wasn't the most personable guy on the planet. However, the host was unbelievably kind and attentive - he even brought us a bottle of champagne to celebrate my sister's birthday. I am torn between 3-4 stars. Three to me, is decent but could use some improvement. Mostly, I was unhappy with the saltiness of our food (along with everyone else at my table) It was overwhelming. Everything we ate was engulfed in salt, which I'm not sure why, because the food itself seemed to be high quality. The french onion soup looks great in photos, but in reality tasted like gravy (no exaggeration) I am glad that we enjoyed a nice evening here, but to be honest I wouldn't recommend it. Brought my little girl to this iconic restaurant in beautiful Sag Harbor. Retro elegance ambiance is a fact here. Service was impeccable. They didn't miss a beat. We didn't feel rushed even though we were only a two top. The wine Bible needed two people to carry to the table. Staff was helpful with recommendations. Went with my gut feeling for an 18 year old Burgundy and was very happy. Sweetbreads and paté to start. My daughter tried them both, enjoying the cherries with the paté but not so much the sweetbreads. The texture was what I know and expect: a soft creamy middle with a nice firmer texture on the outside. Maybe not so much for a 10 year old. She said she liked it but wouldn't order it. Though the paté she kept going in for more than her own salad. Like clockwork, my daughter orders the filet mignon for her entree (you don't want your son dating a salad entree girl, trust me). Cooked to perfection. I had the brace of quail veronique. Perfect amount of food. Tender, flavorful, aromatic, succulent, and a perfect pairing to my Burgundy. I always have a great experience at The American Hotel. Ambience is fantastic, staff is excellent and knowledgeable and food is delicious. They have a superb wine selection. Loved the burrata dish (tasted like gazpacho), the duck, the lamb chops, the Rockefeller, even the bread and butter is fantastic. Docked 1 star because they don't do anything special when you make a reservation and state that it is a special event. Came once for my mothers birthday and reminded host that it was her birthday and I'd like to do a champagne toast or a dessert with a candle, and they completely forgot about it and when I finally tracked down waitress in restaurant, she brought it out and charged for full glasses of champagne, nothing specially discounted, no wish of a happy birthday even, no suggestion to buy a bottle instead for cheaper (I thought we would do a simple "taste" but nope, 4 fully loaded glasses). read more

This is my first negative review ever in life. I walked in to the hotel with my boyfriend. An older gentleman. I am a woman of color, biracial. I was discriminated against from the minute I walked in the door. People being rude, making comments starting arguments. Nobody would allow us to sit down hovering over seats that they weren't sitting in. Management and the bartender saw this happen and no one said a thing.
