I arrived early and was able to check in right away -- greeted by a friendly staff member and Josie, the adorable resident pup who totally won me over. My first-floor room was spacious and comfortable, with two queen beds, a walk-in shower, plenty of storage, and even a private back door to the parking lot -- such a thoughtful touch. The garden area with the Zen gazebo, fire pit, pool, and guest barbecue added so much charm. You're walking distance to great restaurants, fishing boats, a bagel shop, meat market, liquor store, and more -- and just a short drive to the village or Montauk Point. Only a few minor things kept it from being a perfect 5 stars: no cell service in the room (but I used Alexa and Messenger to make calls), no coffee maker or microwave in standard rooms (though the office has both), and no blackout curtains. The room gets very bright early in the morning -- plus some of the outdoor lighting from the hotel shines in at night. Those things are so minor... it's a welcoming place, great staff and daily housekeeping, Jeanette is great, with lots of thoughtful details. I can't wait to stay here again!

We called the restaurant to either move our reservation to another day or cancel it, and were told that only the manager could assist us. However, we were told the manager was unavailable because he was busy speaking with regulars at a table. I asked if we could simply be placed on hold until he was available so we could find a solution. We were told no. Instead, the employee said they would "leave a note" and that someone would call us back if they were able to help. Meanwhile, we were told that if the reservation was canceled, we would be charged a $135 cancellation fee -- despite the fact that we were actively trying to work with the restaurant to either reschedule or resolve the situation. The experience became even more unacceptable when the employee eventually hung up on us and then stopped answering our calls. The restaurant only answered after American Express contacted them on our behalf. To be clear, I have no issue with a restaurant having a cancellation policy. What I have an issue with is the way this situation was handled: being told the manager was "too busy" to speak with us, being refused the simple courtesy of being placed on hold, having our calls screened, and ultimately being hung up on. That is an embarrassing level of customer service for an establishment of this caliber. I genuinely hope someone in management -- above the person working the restaurant that evening -- takes this seriously and addresses this behavior. A cancellation policy is one thing; treating a customer with this level of disrespect is another.

The air conditioner was extremely loud, the room phone didn't work, and no manager was available when we needed assistance. We ultimately left one day early because we no longer felt comfortable staying. Despite repeated calls and promised follow-up, management refused to refund the unused night. For a hotel at this price point and with this reputation, we expected far better service, communication, and accountability.

The owners/hosts Michael and Rosalind are just amazing and warm. We felt quite at home with their kindness and enthusiasm. They are also both exceptionally talented artists and sculptors. They each have their own personal studios within the villa with amazing pieces of their personal talents. The exquisite gardens, trails, and sculptures along with the extraordinary grounds adorned with a variety of greenery and colors, paint a vivid picture of a serene and beautiful environment all around you. The second day the entre was corned beef hash, biscuits, plantains, both days muffins, OJ and very fresh coffee. Veda is very accommodating to dietary concerns. When we arrived, the toilet in our room was broken\. It took approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to repair, during which time we couldn't use the bathroom or shower before going out to dinner\. The bathtub also wasn't draining properly until we finally figured out a way to get it to drain ourselves\. In addition, the refrigerator wasn't cold on the first day\. We had actually called ahead to ask them to make sure it was turned on because we experienced the same issue during a previous stay\. The next day, we returned to the room to put our baby down for a nap and found contractors installing new carpet directly outside our door\. The constant hammering and nailing made it impossible for our baby to sleep\. We asked if the work could pause for just an hour, but we were told no\. The only solution offered was to move us to a much smaller room where the only bathroom was located inside the children's sleeping area, which wasn't a practical option for our family\. The staff offered us a bottle of wine as compensation, we declined\. We then asked if there was another way to make the situation right, such as adjusting our room rate, but the manager said no\. We've always enjoyed staying at The Whaler's Inn, which makes this experience particularly frustrating\. Maintenance issues can happen, but multiple room problems, disruptive construction during the day without accommodation, and the lack of a meaningful resolution left us feeling that the value did not match the price we paid\.
