The folks at Anchorage Downtown Hotel were more than accommodating. My flight came in VERY late (past midnight),and they still offered their free shuttle service. I called when my flight touched down and the driver was there within 10 minutes. The rooms are clean and comfortable and affordable. (compared to other rates in the downtown area, I thought it was a steal) I agree that the breakfast was minimalist, but there are some good breakfast spots nearby if a bagel, fruit, yogurt and coffee aren't enough for you. read more

Just called to inquire about an extended day and wanted to know about weekly and monthly rates. They informed me, to my HORROR that a one month stay that included breakfast and dinner, would be $1800. Outrageous!!!! The Continental Breakfast only has coffee - not juice, milk or water and the vending machines with juice are broken. Booo! The Anchorage Downtown Hotel is a very small self-proclaimed 'boutique hotel'. They probably only have around thirty rooms and aren't particularly fancy, but go into this hotel knowing they're a small local business and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The front desk area is actually quite nice with window-bar seating where you can sit on a laptop, read, or just relax for a moment while waiting for a taxi. They also have a free continental breakfast provided each morning. It's just your typical selection of items like cereal, oatmeal, toast, fruit, and other traditional light breakfast items. The attendees at the front desk are very friendly and the maid service is extremely professional. They do not have any in-room dining options and the front desk is closed after 11:00 PM (reopening at 7:00 AM). The hotel itself is fairly old, but for its age it is very well-maintained. The biggest complaint I have about this hotel is the fact that it is very hot (even in midwinter- I stayed here in December). The building has very poor air circulation. They have ceiling fans in each room, but they don't accomplish much in terms of cooling the place down. The windows can be opened and unless you're comfortable in an 80 degree environment, you'll need your window cracked to sleep comfortably here. Unfortunately, this is to be expected with many old buildings in Alaska, so I couldn't downgrade my rating too heavily because of this. The room I had was room 204 on the second floor. It was quite small- smaller than my bedroom at home. With that being said inside there was a queen sized bed, flat screen TV, armoire, mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and an ironing board. All of the items were placed in a way that didn't make the room feel over-crowded, though. The bathroom did not have a tub, but did have a large glass-door walk in shower. There were basic complimentary toiletries, but all hotels in the Anchorage area seem to go very 'cheap' when it comes to these items. The Anchorage Downtown Hotel did supply the basics (2 bars of soap, 2 shampoo/conditioners, and 1 lotion), but nothing special by any means. The hotel was clean. My room was decorated in a bit of a traditional Asian theme. Although very few hotels can pull off this theme tastefully without feeling tacky or aged, the Downtown Hotel actually did it quite nicely keeping with neutral colors and avoiding a lot of pastels. The hotel is located a few blocks away from 4th Avenue (the main drag of tourist shops, eateries, and night clubs in Anchorage). It's in a quiet neighborhood, but it isn't necessarily the safest part of downtown. The hotel does lock their doors at 11:00 PM and you are given a key to get in and out as you please- but non-guests (like a pizza delivery guy) will need to be greeted at the front door to be let in by you after that time. I got my room at a winter rate of $56 a night and that is a STEAL for the customer service I received and the room quality. The hotel is quite affordable in terms of downtown Anchorage and it may not be 5 stars by any means, but it's certainly worth staying in on a budget. And for the price, I'm happily giving it 4 stars. read more

One of the hotel staff was not particularly competent. She initially could not provide us for secure suitcase lockup before check-in time (another employee later had no problem with that),.. and then she asked to charge my credit card for an already paid for Expedia purchase (my bad for not sticking to my guns). The next shift took time to sort it out but I'm still waiting for the refund (just not what you want when you are traveling to know when you get home you will have to track the progress on that). The other staff were pleasant enough. The place itself is an old building, it feels more like you are in a big house than a regular hotel. The floors and walls are paper thin in terms of noise containment. My biggest concern was cleanliness. The bathroom was ok, and floor vacuumed, but the bed spread made me wonder how well (many hairs and a weird smell). I am flexible and can tolerate all that for a low price, but that was not the case - it was kind of pricey (but obviously the best deal I must have found at the time). I cannot really recommend this place. Positives were the airport shuttle, free wifi, and location (though most hotels in the area seems nearby too). And why would you eat the continental breakfast with the Snow City cafe so close by?! read more

Anchorage. What a charming 'little big city' with a friendliness and enthusiasm attitude welcoming visitors from all over the world. It's hard to keep the smile off your face. That is, unless you're unfortunate enough to have believed this hotel's very exaggerated boasting about itself. I did. My room - with a queen size bed - is so small that it takes considerable coordination with my wife if either of us (to be clear, only (2) two people) are walking in the room at the same time - and neither of us are 'plus sized...' You have luggage? Ooops! There goes the walking room! It's summer here and it's warm. Air conditioning? Sure! Open your window - with no screen - to keep the bugs out - and let that fresh air roll in from the two major streets and city traffic only a few feet away! Staying several nights? Too bad for you... there is no room service to make your little room up in the morning or to replace your two little towels and two wash rags. Be sure to negotiate which of you gets the 1 (one) water glass that's provided. At least you are connected with the community as the Anchorage Health Center is right next door with plenty of twitchy and itchy clients coming and going all the time. Your car will be fine...as you get to park it in the same lot with twitchy and itchy. What could possibly go wrong? Yep. It sucks to be in this hotel. But Anchorage is pretty nice. Just keep thinking positive thoughts. Then this hotel's cramped, hot, noisy room, with exhaust fume filled hot air wafting through the windows carrying the sounds of the twitchy and itchy mumbling angry conversations to themselves while they 'make water' on your car's tires won't bother you so much. Or, here's a thought! Let's all stay somewhere OTHER than this! read more

Spent the past two nights at the Anchorage Downtown hotel in two different rooms (travel plans changed so I had booked them separately and they didn't have any rooms available both nights). I liked that they offer free shuttle service for the train station and airport. They also had a mini fridge in the room that was convenient. The location downtown was also convenient. However, the hotel left a lot to be desired. The first room smelled like stale smoke even though it's a nonsmoking hotel. Pro tip: If you convert your hotel from smoking to nonsmoking, clean the carpets. The "parkstrip" "queen deluxe" room (second night) had a building between the room and the parkstrip, so no view, if that is what they had meant referring it to that way. The "parkstrip" room was stuffy hot. Unfortunately the window opened to a hallway and the ceiling fan wasn't able to sufficiently air out the room even though it was cool outside. The shower door fell off its tracks onto me in the first room, and the second room's shower door also seemed unstable. In both rooms the surfaces of the furniture were sticky from the paint never setting. There was no soap in the second room. The smoke alarm was broken, just a hole without the cover with wires hanging out (safety first!). There were pliers left in the second room--perhaps after working on that smoke alarm? A decorative pillow had a mess of stuffing coming out of the back of it. The coffee pot in the first room was not plugged in and didn't have a cord long enough to reach any outlets. I was able to move it to the corner of the bathroom counter to use it, but it didn't really fit there. We also stayed at the Copper Whale and Jewel Lake Bed and Breakfast in Anchorage at other points on this trip, as well as accommodations from $72-$320 in Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, Seward and Whittier and this was definitely the low, but not in price! Older building with windows to the outside, but walls are a little thin. Small business it seems, not corporate owned as far as I could tell. So for a start it's not closed! We stayed here recently on a semi-emergency car buying trip. And I was suddenly embarrassed for Alaska. Accommodation is a seller's market here, in the summer. We wanted privacy, but next time we'll stay with friends. This was a 60 dollar a night hotel room anywhere else in the world, but demand drives up price. We were constantly disappointed in small ways. We paid more for a bigger tv and didn't get it. There was only decaf in the coffee basket. Breakfast was provided, I think, by someone who has read about breakfast in books but never experienced it. For the price you'd think you would find someone behind the desk at all hours, but no. A late evening attempt to find some water cups came to naught. So stay here if you must! It's close to restaurants and whatnot and half the price of the Hilton. Don't expect service or attention to detail. But you'll be clean and protected from the elements in Anchorage and that's something, huh? read more

The name of the business is Anchorage Downtown Hotel , located in Anchorage , Alaska, but in reality it is more like a Motel. Yes, the sheets were clean( they smelled like bleach so I assumed they had recently been washed??), but I found trash behind my night stand( a Large McDonals cup lid with a straw sticking out of it, so not easy to miss seeing it). The bathroom was fairly clean and sufficiently stocked with toilet paper, and the towels were clean( but some of the wash cloths were stained, yuck!) also the jacuzzi tub jet thingies were nasty looking , like they had not taken time to clean them properly, therefor no bath for me, only a quick shower. The rest of the room looked okay. We did have a beautiful view of the mountains ( room #215), and the blackout curtains helped keep out the perpetual daylight you get this time of year in Alaska. I was in Anchorage for a doctor appointment, I was to discuss treatment options with my Radiologist, so the first night we were there I did not sleep well ( only about 3 hours) because I was thinking about my appointment the next day, so on the 2nd night we stayed ( we were to stay the night and get up at 8 a.m. the next morning to drive back home, it is a 6 1/2 hour drive, at around 2:00 a.m. we started hearing a lot of bumping around sounds, and doors slamming multiple times, then around 2:15 a.m. there was a persistent knock on our door, my daughter-in-law who was with me asked through the door who it was and someone from across the hall yelled out to the person at our door and they went over to that room instead. Then we heard constant door slamming ( the hallway is only about 2 1/2 feet wide ( seriously) so we heard all these loud noises coming from the room across the hall. My daughter-in-law called down to the front desk and complained about the noise, then the group of 5 or 6 partiers went outside on the front sidewalk which was directly underneath our window, which was open because there was no AC, and continued to party, passing a bottle of liquor around like a bunch of drunks, and smoking. At that point it was about 3:00 am so we got up and packed up our bags, told the receptionist why we were leaving and proceeded to drive the 348 miles home on only 3-4 hours sleep. First of all we were told by the receptionist during check-in that they do not rent to locals because locals come in and party and tear up the place, and I read it is their policy not to take " after hour check-ins, you will have to wait until the next morning to check-in if you arrive after hours" clearly they do not abide by their own rules. Overall, I was very disappointed with our choice of " hotel" and next time will choose Marriott( which by the way is across the street. read more

The hotel was cute, and decorated kind of funky with framed posters of Paris and Audrey Hepburn. The receptionist was friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable but not the best. However, for the two nights we were there, the water in the shower was not above lukewarm, there was a small hole in the wall by the door where maybe someone had punched the wall, the phone was broken (there were pieces of plastic missing and no dial tone), one lamp was missing a bulb, the deadbolt was missing so there was no way to lock the door from the inside, and the window did not shut all the way which let in a lot of cold February air, and the heating was broken. The hotel did provide a space heater which kept the room warm enough. Honestly, if the hotel fixed some of those problems it would be a nice place. But the broken phone, lock, heater, lamp, and hole in the wall was kind of off-putting. For the price (everything in Alaska is expensive) it needs some improvements. read more

The best part of this hotel is its people. HOSPITABLE!! The lady who picked us up, I believe her name was Kristen... Started us off right with an easy ride from the airport to the hotel. Great notes about hotel: Location... Easy to walk to downtown Location ...Easy to bike trails Has bikes to ride! Continental breakfast Easy to see Moose, Planet walk, Osborne house, market place. Humpy's, F station, Glacier Brewhouse, S&S Saloon, And people who stay here are friendly. Pros: The new beds are comfortable. The staff is friendly. The wall painting was nice. Price was affordable. Location is much better than most cheap Anchorage hotels. Cons: The remote for the TV and cable box was not programmed, so it didn't work. The Internet doesn't reach to many of the rooms. There was trash left over from the previous occupant. The heater is a portable oil-filled heater, placed beside the bed (which is placed so that you run into it when you get in and out of bed). The room was a bit small. A long black hair was on one of the bath towels. Bathroom door was broken. Alarm had not been reset, so it went off at 4:30 AM. read more

Anchorage downtown hotel is in a great location: in downtown, right next to a bus stop on 9th where you can easily get to the part of town where gear shops and the Bear's Tooth are. Like a lot of Anchorage, it's a little rough around the edges so be aware there may be people loitering outside who seem like they are on drugs or drunk. That being said, I never felt unsafe around 8th and K. Inside, the rooms are clean, spacious and have nice amenities. A good price and the way to go if you are like me and enjoy supporting small businesses or local boutiques versus big chains. There are at least 5 Marriotts in Anchorage. They are a kitsch ripoff. Stay local, cheap and get yourself right in the middle of the city. read more

The room smelt like smoke, and it even says downstairs at the reception area that their is a $300 fine for ones who caught smoking..so I was like, are they setting us up with this? The pillows stuffings are coming out and the seem old, hope they laundry em all the time..and the bed was creaky... They still uses keys for the doors and the doors are hard to open..our room have a window by the hallway..like why????? There's nothing out there for us to see, why would you put a window by the hallway?! This ain't elementary school. Anyway they serve continental breakfast.. This hotel was the worst hotel I have ever had the displeasure of staying at. The staff are horrible, the guests are LOUD. While I was a guest there, we witnessed ANOTHER guest try and throw himself out of a window. The hotel room had coffee stains that WE were charged a fine for, even though we had nothing to do with it. The sink we had in our room would clog and we couldn't even USE IT. You would think with all of the crap going on with the hotel they would try and accommodate you but instead we were charged a $300 fee after we left. We wanted to stay at a small local hotel to get the feel of Anchorage the best we could but instead we ended up staying at the worst hotel in anchorage. If you're thinking about booking this hotel please think twice and book somewhere else. This has been the worst experience of my life. read more

We checked in and the receptionist was extremely helpful in locating us a room for early check in. The rooms are on the small side (but not as small as I expected based on other reviews so I was pleasantly surprised). The bed was super comfy (wish I didn't have to get up at 4AM to get to the airport!). Walked everywhere I wanted to go and even though it is on the edge of town, it was relatively convienent. The shuttle at $15.00 is a deal - but if there are 2 or more in your party not so much so - better off with a cab (unless the shuttle is per party). Looked like b'fast was basic - but you get what you paid for and I am not one bit sorry I stayed here!!!!! read more

What an amazing place! I'm an Anchorage expat and never had stayed in a hotel there before. Wanted something less like what I usually get when I travel for business (I do aquite often). On the phone they're much more than pleasant. Accommodating in every way once I got here. It's quiet; it's clean; it's convenient; it's perfect! I've lived in San Francisco off and on over the years and it reminds me of something I might discover there or in New Orleans. Even the people staying here are different--GOOD different. For my own sake I hope it doesn't get too popular but because they've done such an awesome job I wish them only the best. They work hard to make this place great and it shows. Apparently "boutique" means bare bones. Somebody made the curtains on their sowing machine and forgot it is bright here 24 hours a day in the summer...they don't stop the light from coming in one bit. They splurged for the blackout curtains in the lobby but not in my room...had to hang the comforter over the window to get some sleep. At least the desk manager is nice. read more

Good location, quiet and clean. Walking distance to lots of restaurants etc... Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Bicycles available for rent on site, convenient to the costal trail system. We rode 20 miles along the coast saw a couple moose 20 feet off the trail. Enjoyed our stay. Would recommend it for basic accommodations at a reasonable price. read more

Stayed here at the end of June with my boyfriend (he picked the hotel so I have no idea what the rate was). It was my first time to Anchorage and this was an okay place to spend two nights. The girl at the reception desk was friendly and helpful enough when it came time to ask for a place to find a couple bottles of wine - the check-in and check-out process was smooth sailing. We had an interior room with windows that only opened into the hallway - the room was extraordinarily hot and stuffy (for it being June in Alaska) even though we left the ceiling fan running and the windows open when we could. The room was small and cozy and decorated in a funky, eclectic sort of style. The bed was not uncomfortable but not the best either. Walls are pretty thin as it is an older building and we could hear our neighbors. Location was incredibly convenient to downtown and the hotel was easy to find. Free Wi-Fi and in-room mini fridge and coffee maker were definitely nice amenities to have. We avoided the sparse continental breakfast and opted to walk the short distance to the local Snow City Cafe (AMAZING!!) instead. All-in-all, it was a decent place to stay, though I don't know that it would be my first choice if I ever return to Anchorage - especially since there are SO many other options for lodging downtown. read more
