A few small positives, but overall, it's clear this place is run by someone more interested in cutting costs than taking care of guests. The Good: Staff were incredible No roaches or bed bugs (Only reason I didn't give it 1 star). Built-in bottle opener in the kitchen. Simple, but appreciated. Onsite laundry is available. The Bad: Strict check-in policy - They wouldn't let me check in 30 minutes early. Not a huge ask, but they stuck to the rulebook like robots. No flexibility, no interest in making things easy for guests. Toilet constantly leaks and refills - You'll hear it dripping and refilling all day and night. Refrigerator is loud and always running - Sounds like it's trying to launch. Room won't hold heat - Heater runs constantly, but the temp swings back and forth. It also makes a moaning/whining sound every time it shuts off. Kitchen with no dishes - Full kitchen, but nothing to cook with. No pans, plates, utensils, nothing. Had to go back out and buy my own after already bringing groceries in. No warning ahead of time. Uncomfortable pillows and a terrible desk setup - Bad for sleeping or working. Blackout curtains don't seal to the window - Light pours in around the edges. Cold tap runs hot first - Takes 15-20 seconds of hot water before any cold comes out. Keycard access is unreliable - Doesn't always work, sometimes takes multiple tries. One day, it failed completely while I was stuck outside with groceries. Even the main entrance needs a key card - So people checking in are often stuck outside waiting for someone to notice. Laundry machines require quarters, but the front desk doesn't have any - Was told to go to a store and ask for change. That's the system. Housekeeping is a joke - They claim it's every 4 days, but in 21 days I only had service twice--once because I asked for it. There's a spot on the key card envelope where they're supposed to note your cleaning schedule, but no one filled it out. Internet is nearly useless - Got 800kbps when it actually connected. Used my phone's hotspot instead. Bottom Line: On paper, this place checks a lot of boxes. In practice, almost everything is half-done or broken. It's a classic case of cutting every corner possible to boost profits, with no thought given to the guest experience. Won't be back.

This hotel is across from a plaza with Starbucks and Hilton Garden Inn. We stayed for one night (a Saturday) in a queen suite, which cost me ~$280 for one night. We had arrived earlier in Anchorage than expected and so we called the hotel to ask if our room would be ready. The employee said probably after 12 pm. So later on, we had called around 1:45 pm if a room would be available to check in earlier (check in is at 3 pm). The employee said yes and so we drove over. When we checked in, we were surprised to be told by the employee checking us in that there is no room available yet, even though this was the exact same employee who told us (over the phone) that a room was available. We ended up waiting in the car until 3. So at 3 pm, we finally checked in. Got the luggage dolly and headed up to the second floor. However, the room we went in had a very, very strong smell of mold, mildew and a chemical cleaning smell. My husband was already out of patience by then and so we headed back to the front desk. Another employee said that we could only be placed in this room because the 2nd floor is the pet floor... but since there is no other rooms she refused to give us another room. After some arguing from my husband, we were placed in another room, but on the first floor (right next to the laundry room. Yes there are coin operated washers and dryers in this hotel). This room was clean and did not have a odor but it was annoying to hear the laundry room door slam throughout the day and part of the evening. A few days after we had checked, I saw on my credit card bill that I was over charged a pet fee for our stay. But at least the manager I spoke to on the phone was able to credit me back the fee. But find it to be annoying that I was over charged (again we only stayed one night) and had to call to reverse the charge. I also glad that I always like to check my credit card transactions regularly to catch things like this. The room itself was fine and space was comfortable for 2 people and a pet. But was expecting much better service.

We got a room with two queen beds. The room was clean and comfortable. There's a kitchenette and a table and chairs, which is nice considering how long we were staying. The room was quiet and contemporary and the beds comfortable. The staff has been super friendly and helpful in every interaction, and the security glass in the lobby I saw mentioned in some other reviews was actually removed during our stay. My only real beef is that we seem to have been in one of two rooms in the whole place where the only thing we can see out the window is other windows. That's not great but not at all a dealbreaker.

The common deck was a perfect place to start or end the day with views of the water. Breakfast was equally delicious with a spread of pastries, fruit, sausage, hash browns, etc. It's about a 10-15min walk to downtown Anchorage as well as the coastal trail. It is not located near any grocery stores, however, so we did a big Costco shop shortly after our arrival in Anchorage. Our room was on the top floor and we had a great view through the living room window. The bedroom has plenty of closet space as well as a comfortable queen sized bed and ceiling fan. The bathroom is small with no bathtub, but has an awesome rain shower. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Because we stayed as long as we did, we did not receive the bagged breakfast offered to other guests. We were asked what we would like and were given fruit, bread, eggs, yogurt, butter, bacon, bananas, apples, oranges and granola. Basically, everything we asked for, we received. It was great being able to make our own breakfasts! Compared to the price of hotels, many of which are located only a block or two away from the Arctic Fox, this place is a good deal. As well, as the privacy of your room, you have access to a large outdoor deck with tables and chairs as well as a grassy area with a table and chairs and there is a common room and a laundry room. A cab to/from the airport cost us just $25. Now, as for the negatives. Anchorage has a homeless problem. Many homeless are attracted to a soup kitchen located within a block of the Arctic Fox. They did not harass us or approach us at any time, but they are there in numbers and it wasn't all that pleasant having to walk by them as often as we did. Most nights we didn't hear them either, but there were a couple of nights where they kept us awake with their shouting. This b&b is also located near the train tracks and during the day, especially if you have your windows open, the trains can be noisy. We were not bothered at night, however, because the bedroom is on the side opposite to where the tracks are located.

We didn't want to share so we requested a room with your own bathroom. When we checked in, Carol took good care of us, she was our host during our stay. She was a sweetheart, every morning she made breakfast and it was good. Yes, your stay comes with free breakfast. If you can't stay for breakfast just let your host know the day before and they will prepare you a bag and have it ready for you in the morning. House keeping was great! Our room was spotless! The whole place was spotless! The only complaint I have is that the walls are thin. It's an old house, I understand. We are from the east coast so we were in bed by 8pm. When other people came back from dinner we could hear them loud and clear, the walking and closing doors, etc. This was our first time at a Bed & Breakfast so we didn't know what to expect. While we enjoyed our stay we have discovered that we actually preferred hotels over B&B's. If you like B&B's and don't mind walking to the center of town or driving, then I would say give this place a try.

**BED BUG ALERT**…read more okay so you now how when you go to a hotel the sheets usually are clean, new and matching? Well that's not how they do it at the Spenard. the sheets were floral, solid, mismatched and looked about 15 years old. That I was going to grin and bear. The ciggerate burns and rips in the comforter I was going to grin and bear. The dangling lightbulb instead of a normal lamp I was going to just turn a blind eye to. The old microwave on a foldout and the holes in the bathroom door I was looking past. The "Adults Only" store right next door was difficult to look past, but hey it was just going to be one night and i'd find somewhere else tomorrow, right? So now to the bed bug discovery...I was sitting up in the bed at about 1AM - unwilling to bring myself to lay in the sheets. I was sitting for only ten minutes in the light of the room till a bug comes scampering across my shoulder...I tried to capture it on a piece of paper and right when it hit the paper it moved at an unprecidented speed - so i squished it. I thought it might be a tick but I wasn't sure. I looked up bed bugs on my phone and was horrified to find out that it was infact a bed bug. When I showed the evidence to the owner/employee she said, "Oooooh, that's a BIG ONE!!" I got the heck out of there and found the most wonderful hotel down the street - Eagle...something was in the title. I will definitely go back to that one. Things you need to know about bed bugs: 1:they only feast on human and animal blood. 2:They can survive up to a year without eating. 3:They usually onl come out in the dark but in some cases (like mine) can be seen in the light. 4: You can only be sure you have an infestation if you physically see one. 5:They are nearly impossible to get rid of - exterminators even have problems with them. 6:you will likely bring them home with you if you encounter them. 7:They come out in the hundreds in the night and eat their sleeping victims like a gift from hell.
