Tucked away in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle is a truly great Hockey Bar with a few Canadian tricks up it's sweater sleeve. The drinks are great and they've got Labatts on tap. Good top shelf selection of spirits with decent pours deftly handled by bartenders who probably play hockey! It's a hockey bar and it shows. But the big secret is the food! Top notch poutine is not to be missed here. 4 different kinds of gravy are available- traditional beef, mushroom, curry and country style. Glorious gravy, cheese curds sit atop perfect french fries that are crispy with the skins on and still have the desired mashed potato texture inside! The burgers are huge and excellent but I'd opt for their rendition of french dip with ciabatta. Service is excellent but, be warned, it does get busy when there's hockey games on. Wear your favorite hockey team jersey or hat and you'll have a new set of friends for the next hour or two. read more

I called ahead to place an order... got hung up on and called back to finally speak to a woman who told me they were "slammed" and to call back in 30 minutes. I decided just to go in since I was only 15 minutes away. Once I got there it didn't seem that busy which frustrated me since the woman could've taken my order over the phone. I encountered the same woman I spoke to earlier and placed my order for take out. After she took my order she "forgot" that the kitchen closed 15 minutes ago... even though I spoke to her 15 minutes prior when she told me to call back and failed to mention that they wouldn't be taking anymore orders? Extremely poor service... I think the woman needs a job that doesn't involve customer service. read more

I love to come in with my pooch and watch some sports on ice, have the best poutine in Seattle, and a labatt blue. Shout outs- the amazing poutine, friendly and funny bartenders, bomb ginger beef, realy good chicken tenders, labatt, lots of big tvs, dogs. Could use some work - I've had my food take a long time a couple of times, seemed like there was a miscommunication with the kitchen. Part of the Anchor Alliance but they play trivia on the big screen and it drowns out the Kraken games. Lame for a hockey bar.

TL;DR - Good value, good pub grub food, noisy and very slow service. This place promotes itself as Seattle's only Hockey bar. I guess the Hockey Jerseys on the wall, 6 TVs and projection screen make it a "Hockey Bar". They do get props for recognizing Seattle's past Hockey Teams, including the Totems. Seating is very limited as is typical for Seattle establishments and it is seat yourself. When we arrived, the place was PACKED with people watching the earlier games. The noise level is high, even for a sports bar and NONE of the TVs have their volume on. When we arrived, the bartender covered a pool table with plywood to make an extra table but he automatically put on the Vegas Golden Knights after seeing our hats. Figuring that was a good sign, we sat down and ordered a pitcher of beer. The beers on tap are inkjet printed signs above the bar, but I don't need a pretentious bar so that is fine. Three times people asked to sit down at our "table", include a party of 6 at the opposite end. This has happened to us several times in Seattle, so it must just be a thing there. The food was good, but the service was incredibly slow. We started with Poutine fries ($10) and fish & chips ($18). The fries came out quickly enough and were hot and tasty. The fish & chips was advertised as halibut, but cod was being substituted for a slight price reduction. The fish & chips never came out to the "table" and the order needed to be placed again. Once it finally came out it was hot, crisp and not greasy - everything you want from fish & chips. We also placed an order for their Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich (Corned Beef) which took 30+ minutes to arrive. The server did give us one update, but this placed is way understaffed. Once it arrived, it was also hot, tasty and served with "Montreal coleslaw" or cabbage dressed with Italian dressing. Overall, if you want to watch Hockey this is one of your few choices. The prices weren't bad, especially for Seattle and 2 pitchers of beer, two dinners and an appetizer was $85 including tax. While they desperately need a competitor or two, I would likely return to the Angry Beaver the next time I'm in Seattle and want to watch the Vegas Golden Knights. read more

Made another trip to the Angry Beaver last night. Again, loved it! Food was killer, again. I had the chipotle Ribeye sandwich (think that's what it's called). Sandwich was incredible the fries were hot and really good. Lot of good local beers on tab, with a very knowledgeable bartender to explain what's what. They had hockey and Olympic on the TVs, pool table and shovelboard games going on. Just a fun atmosphere. If your in Greenwood and your not looking for something fancy, but you want really good food and a fun atmosphere, the Angry Beaver is your Spot! read more

Sometimes I crave Canada! I think all Seattleites do. And Angry Beaver can help you scratch that itch. They have all the Canadian staples you can ask for. They have Kokanee, hockey on big screens, several flavors of poutine (try the curry poutine) and jars full of canadian candy. Complete with a bartender that will spring the occasional 'eh?' I haven't been excited about a Canadian Bar since I stumbled into The Keg in Hong Kong's Lan Kwai Fong district! It's a privilege to be the first review for the new occupants of the old Pig N Whistle location. They wrote on the window "Bring your favorite Canadians" (American spelling) and so we went as a party of two Canucks and two Yankees to check it out today for lunch. The main highlight on the menu was the Poutine - in fact, they have a "Poutine flight" for $8.95 which has three different gravys. I had the Canadian BLT (Peameal on a bun). There is a "Ginger Beef Skewers" dish which is infused with Maple Syrup but does not have any actual skewers per se. We finished off with the Canadian classic - Beavertails. Everyone enjoyed their meals although the word "salty" came up a lot. I'm personally still curious why Poutine in Seattle, whether here or at Skillet, has herbs sprinkled on it. That's new to me. Their menu for starters is small but I hope to see it grow more - perhaps the addition of Montreal Smoked meat or other Canadian delicacies (Timbits?)...Tim Horton's drip coffee might be a nice touch as well. Love the decor - the National Anthem posted up on the wall, a mountie statue, maple leaf candleholders... great start but looking forward to see it reach its full potential! read more

This place immediately leaps to the top of the list as the premiere hockey bar in Seattle, without a doubt. No one else is trying even remotely as hard to court the hockey fan as the Angry Beaver is. If you need a spot to watch hockey, you can round up the star rating, or you can just skip that and come in for the game. Odds are they will have it on one of the many big flat screens--even if there are several games happening at once. If you're looking for live music or food and drinks, the experience may seem a bit more uneven. It's definitely not bad, but they're not really pushing to be amazing in any way other than in entertaining the hockey fan. We came in on a rainy Saturday night to watch the Hawks game after the windstorm knocked out our power at home. We had fun and will certainly come back for hockey. It's a good-sized space; you might remember it was a medium-sized restaurant before. There's a long bar on the left and maybe a couple dozen tables on the right. The big windows facing Greenwood Ave all open so there's plenty of air, weather permitting. On the bar side, there are more tables, and a long raised shuffleboard table. There are big flat screen TVs everywhere, tuned to the game. Have I mentioned this is a good place to watch sports? The staff here are young and funny; they're all outgoing and they know some good jokes. They sling a lot of basic mixed drinks and an awful lot of shots. Quite a few broskis in here shooting back the booze, at least on Saturday night. There are about a dozen taps, but they're essentially meaningless for a big beer lover. You can find decent beer for sure, but the pints we drank were a bit under-carbonated and maybe not the freshest. They don't turn kegs over quickly, if those pours were any indication. The menu is brief; about 4 short pages of burgers, sandwiches, salads, and fried stuff. The menus themselves are old, tattered, and torn. They'll serve food, but you get the sense that people memorize what they want pretty quickly, and the physical menus are kind of a fallback mechanism they keep around mainly for newer customers. This place is only a couple years old, but the menus look ancient already. The food itself is OK. We had an Angry Burger, advertised as containing ghost pepper sauce and other intense spices. It had some kick to it, but overall it was just a basic burger--it was trying to disintegrate before I was half done. We also had chicken strips (basically just microwaved frozen chicken strips with some hot sauce on them) and the poutine. The poutine is *rad* rad rad, but super salty. We had it with the turkey gravy, which was delicious, but it sounds like the curry might be even better. As the night went on, a fairly competent cover band set up (took them about an hour to plug in) and started playing. They got a bustling crowd for it--they really started slinging some shots when the music crowd walked in. At this point, our service basically disappeared. It took half an hour to close our tab. Our bartender wandered by with the ice bucket, trays of drinks, and other assorted orders and sidework several times, with no chance to get her attention. A trainee finally rang us out. They definitely go into live music mode past a certain hour on the weekends, it seems--placing our food order was like pulling fingernails; the bartender was so eager to write up the ticket and get it to the kitchen that every question we asked made her clearly want to punch us in the face. I'd prefer to have gone over 15% at the end of the night just on the chance that this might become a regular stop, but it looks more likely to be a landing zone for groups of people when hockey's on. read more

The Angry Beaver is a welcome addition to Greenwood, and much improved from the previous Pig & Whistle. As a "Canadian", there are definitely nods to our neighbors to the north in terms of beer and whiskey selections, food, decor, and of course, hockey. While they only had two Canadian beers on draft, they had a more extensive selection of whiskey, and pricing on the whiskeys seemed very reasonable. They also had two of Canada's finest contributions to the culinary world - poutine and fireball whiskey. We definitely enjoyed the poutine flight, which was an enormous plate of fries topped with 3 different gravies - beef, curry, and mushroom. The fried cheese curds were also very good, as we were pleasantly surprised by the larger pieces of curd. And while the Calgary ginger beef might have been ok on it's own, it's also fried so it was a bit too much with the cheese curds and poutine flight. It also seemed like everybody was ordering fireball shots, so we did as well. Unfortunately, they opened during a player walkout, but hopefully with the games resuming last weekend, they will have a bright future in the neighborhood. read more

Last year I enjoyed this bar for the hockey environment and went a handful of times. However, I went recently and it changed my mind if I'd bother to come back. First, the food quality is decent and they have a good selection of beers, especially Canadian beers if you are in the mood. They have poutine too which is nice since it's hard to find in the US. Price is reasonable. Second, it's a fun environment for watching hockey. The people get into it and you know they'll always have the games on, even minor league if you request it. Now the reason I'm giving this bar two stars is due to my recent experience. I invited a group out and we got there before our game started. We picked a table nearest the big screen because they were showing the pregame to the game we wanted. They then changed the sceen to a different game which left half of the table with a horrible view on other TVs. Early on in the game we asked if they could change the big screen back, mostly due to the fact that the majority of the bar was watching the game we wanted and only a few in the back were watching the one on the big screen. We figured they could change a few of the other TVs for the back table to accommodate them. Well they responded that their "policy" is that they don't change games once they've started due to people picking tables based on viewing. I'm sure you can see where this is going. So when our waitress returned we asked about that policy again and then pointed out how they didn't even follow their own policy which had left us screwed over since we had picked a spot where we could all originally see the game. We were very polite in all of this but just wanted to make our case. Well our waitress responded very tactlessly and short. We were all taken aback by how hostile she was given how were trying to be polite. She basically was like "well we can keep arguing about this for 20 minutes, but how about we just order some food and drinks and have a good time. I can come back later if you all want to cool off first and get out of your funk." We almost left after that but figured at that point it might be hard to find a place showing the game nearby. I doubt I'll be back now. I'll find a new bar to watch hockey. Maybe this bar should actually follow their own policy like they claimed or be more accomodating when 75% of the bar is trying to watch the same game. read more

Went here on a rainy day right as they opened and purchased the Poutine Flight. It comes with a huge portion of fries, curds, and three sides of gravy. It was all so great. The curry gravy is a creative spin for gravy and the flavor is explosive. I loved the mushroom gravy - it was thick and tasted like the gravy my grandpa would make when I was a child. As for the fried cheese curds? Yes. Just yes. You can't go wrong with battered and fried cheese paired with cold ranch. Mmmm. I didn't give a 5 star on this one just because they were out of lids so they had to wrap my gravy cups in foil and Saran Wrap. The price is also pretty steep. $25+ for two items is a little out of my price range, but it was still well made! read more

Service here is ok, they got my order wrong on my first visit and acted a bit put out when I wanted what I actually ordered instead of what they brought me. I do think they are a bit pricey also, especially their salads, which also they messed up... I asked for no red onion and it came with ginormous amounts of red onion, ack! Casual, comfortable neighborhood bar. I admit I was drawn by the name. And the lure of the poutine. So, I called a friend who lives in Greenwood and is always up for something new, and we headed over one recent evening. We sat in a comfy booth and enjoyed watching parts of the final game of the 2001 Stanley Cup finals (hey, the NHL is on lock-out) while we perused the menu. It was not terribly extensive, but offers basic bar food -- burgers, fish and chips, peameal bacon... They also offer "poutine burgers," which are your choice of burger (beef, chicken, fish, and, I believe, veggie) topped with poutine with your choice of gravy. We both ordered this (chicken), but, asked for, and were able to get, the poutine on the side instead of on top of the burger. (That seemed like it would it be too much of a chore to actually eat.) The food was fine, but I was not overwhelmed by it. I am not a beef eater, so appreciated that I had my choice of two veggie gravies for my fries. A few on Yelp have complained of inefficient service, but we found ours to be just fine. I'm glad I gave The Angry Beaver a try and certainly do not rule out going back. But, unless the sudden urge to catch a televised curling match strikes, I don't see myself making a particular effort to do so. read more

I stopped in last Sunday night on the way home from the Bainbridge Island - Seattle ferry. There were a couple of hockey games on, Detroit vs Toronto being on the main screen. It was noisy, but not unexpectedly as hockey was on. I ordered the curry poutine and ate it while watching the game. It's some of the better poutine I've had in this city. So, they just opened for brunch on the weekends, which is great for hockey lovers. We came with some kids though; we were walking around enjoying the sun and needed some lunch. We quickly found out they don't have a children's menu AT ALL. Not even a grilled cheese sandwich. I mentioned to the sever that all it would take is to have a grilled cheese sandwich, butter noodles and a hot dog on the menu to make this place kid friendly. Apparently she was not a kid person. Lol, she let me know they don't get many kids (6 kids under 21 were in there at that time) and it was a waste of their time because they would need to change their kitchen around. So it's bread and cheese or noodles and butter. Just say you don't like or want kids there, it's totally easier for all of us. We gave it three stars because the chicken tenders were darned good!
