Looks can be deceiving. I wanted to love this place so much. I am all for an upscale Mexican taco joint and was so happy when I walked past the Annex but unfortunately the food just didn't make the cut. We started with the queso which was okay. Nothing crazy but we were also bummed they do not provide complimentary salsa ($3 charge). For dinner we got the shrimp taco, carne asada taco and chicken fajita. The shrimp was charred and normally I'm all about that but this char was just straight unappealing burnt flavor. The steak was poor quality and the chicken fajitas just weren't anything special. We asked to substitute black beans for the refried beans as the side to the fajitas and got charged an extra $3 again even though they were the same price?? Ultimately we left paying too much for not good food which was a real bummer. On a positive note the space is cute though and they have two big screen TVs. read more

Great new spot for margaritas! Cute new Tex-Mex restaurant in the fan. Love the atmosphere and decorations. They also have a ton of tequilas that you can choose from! Cute new spot in the Fan! Love the location and overall interior vibe. I came on a Friday night about ~3-4 weeks after their opening and was pretty disappointed in the service. Our server clearly did her absolute best, but they just seemed very understaffed for the business they were getting. The manager was running all of her orders and the bartender was stationed at the bar. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure there were no other servers... I'm guessing it probably took about 20 minutes to get a drink after I was seated and eventually I just resorted to going to the bar for refills of water because the poor server was single-handedly manning all of the tables. The tacos were actually delicious, as were the chips and dips. I could very easily see The Annex with 4 or 5 stars once they work out what I feel may have been some "growing pains" as they adjust still to their new rhythm. read more

Come here for the drinks, not the food. Visited yesterday with a party of six and we were all pretty disappointed with the food but loved our margaritas. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and was not impressed. The chicken was dry and the tortilla was tough and hard to chew. The refried beans were cold and tasted like they came straight out of the can and my rice was also somewhat hard. Some friends had the tacos, which they seemed content with but weren't blown away. The salsa is great, and this is a must have! As for my meal I got two tacos gringos, carnitas and chicken! I honestly, don't even like carnitas but, a friend recommended them and I loved it! They had great margaritas specials and everyone at the table that got them, enjoyed them! I got beer on draft that wasn't on happy hour, it was $7. Our first visit to The Annex, and it won't be our last. I had a short rib enchilada with roasted corn salsa and rice with beans. My wife had the empanadas special. Both entrees were well-prepared, well-presented, and delicious. Our dessert was the apple churros--truly exceptional. Our drinks were fine, the service was prompt and friendly, and prices were quite reasonable. As a bonus, the Annex was cozy, warm, and quiet enough to hear table conversation easily--the latter a rarity in RVA, unfortunately. I wish Yelp allowed half-stars, as I'd like to leave a 4.5 star rating. You'll have to supply that in your imagination, I guess. But please do stop by and have a drink or a meal at this lovely restaurant. We're looking forward to our next time already. read more

I went there tonight with a couple of friends for the first time. The waitress was friendly, and was able to get my tacos made with a lettuce wrap instead of flour or corn. Two out of the four of us had our orders messed up, but I didn't mind too much. The tacos were alright, but the chicken was really over cooked. I really don't feel like the tacos were worth the price. The waitress was new, but my friend asked for water twice and don't get a refill until we got our checks. All of our checks were messed up, I had an extra item that I didn't order on it. If that was my total I wish I ordered an extra taco because I left hungry. Came to the Annex on a double date night. The margaritas and Southwest Eggroles kicked us off really well. Chef DaVe spent a great deal of time with us at our table to help with some of our dietary restrictions. All four entrees we got were awesome. I ordered the empanadas and street corn to start and unfortunately is what ruined the whole experience for me since those are hard to mess up, had a jumbo marg which was INDEED jumbo and good, then the banh mi tacos which I did enjoy. I went here the other night and really enjoyed it! We went on a Thursday night so I was worried that it was going to be packed and have poor service considering a lot of the reviews mention that. We walked in, sat down at the bar, and the bartender served us immediately. He was great! I wish I got his name and I would have given him a shout-out. We ordered two margaritas and chips with queso. The chips and queso were good but the margaritas were awesome. Talking with the bartender, he mentioned they make all of their margaritas in house and then put them in a keg which I thought was kind of cool! You don't see a keg full of margaritas very often. We each ordered two tacos: shrimp, carne asada, hamburger taco, and chicken tacos. Great! I think my favorite was the shrimp. I went to The Annex this past weekend with my boyfriend and it was absolutely incredible! We sat at the bar and were served immediately. The bartender was extremely helpful and made sure we were always taken care of. When you go, be sure to try their margaritas! Our favorite part however, was the food. The chef personally came out to explain the menu to us, as it was our first time and helped us decide on a few of his favorite dishes. I highly recommend their wings as an appetizer! The menu has been recently updated so if you have not been there within the past month, I highly recommend you go back to try their new menu! My friend and I got two of the Happy Hour margaritas, and they had almost no flavor whatsoever. Only got them the 2nd time because they were cheap. We thought that maybe because they were only $5 that the bartender didn't put much effort into them....so we both ordered the Paloma after happy hour was over. That too was just not good. We did enjoy our happy hour taquitos, carne asada taco, black sesame tuna taco, and the guac. I adore this little Tex Mex spot. Some of the recent reviews are saddening because all the meals I've had here have been full of flavor and delicious! I love the vegetarian chili, eggplant tacos, sesame black tuna tacos. The flavored margaritas are obviously going to be on the sweeter side, so go with the classic if you're feeling more mellow. It was a full night planned with my friend starting with some TexMex (I usually got to Wong Gonzales but I thought why not do something different). Needless to say it was not a good start to the night. We walk in and seat ourselves to only wait 15 minutes with no acknowledgement or even a hello from any server or bartender. Was given 3 menus, the happy hour, the drink and the food menu. We decided on the sour patch margarita and a house margarita, both frozen. The house margaritas was good, pretty average. The sour patch margarita tasted just like the house margita. Disappointing.. We ordered the taquitos and that is where we fucked up :( the chicken was OVER COOKED and SATURATED in grease. Not to mention the taste :( needless to say we didn't order anything else, out of fear. We will come back, but just for house margaritas on happy hour, and that's not even guaranteed as a chef I just cannot give this place anything more than 2 stars and the only reason it got two is because the bartender was nice. read more

A cute, newly renovated place, the emphasis in this place is obviously on tequila and related mixed drinks. That being the case, I ordered a conventional (ie, lime) margarita. It had the oddest aftertaste and was sweet. Hmm, I have lived along the southern border for many years and never tasted a margarita like that. OK, on to the food: it's an afterthought. The fish taco was pretty good, the carne asada taco was only so-so, and the Mexican corn salad was just plain awful. One out of four is not great, and to top it off the service was not very good, even in a nearly empty restaurant.
