If you're heading in or out (let's be real, you'll probably do both) of the Shenandoah/Front Royal area for a camping/hiking trip, stop here for fresh Apple Butter donuts. Oh and they have apple fritters too! These are exponentially better and foodgasmic if they're hot. The donuts are the perfect size and covered in cinnamon sugar. The fritters are glazed with small chunks of real apple! I have to say that I liked the fritters more than the donuts. Be warned that everything may seem slightly overpriced but hopefully that is because everything is homemade. They sell dozens of different hot sauces in the gift shop. The bf and I had lunch here yesterday. I had a delicious chicken salad sandwich with yummie kettle chips and the bf had a delicious pulled pork sammy with the same awesome kettle chips and coleslaw. When we walked in we were greeted by a friendly lady working at the counter who took our orders and actually recommended the chicken salad to me. Lastly, we knew that the apple doughnuts are supported to be famous... We did not order one, but there were samples at the front counter and they were indeed worth the hype. I come here for their fruit jelly! I have never had their bbq food so I cannot comment on it. Country store has a good collection of quaint stuff. But their jelly selection is awesome - we love them all - peach, blueberry, strawberry, orange marmalade. The stuff is locally made and good! If I could give this place 6 stars I would. What a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. I was on my way to New Market and nearly ran out of gas. The GPS sent me on a mission to nowhere and I ended up by this awesome store by accident. It is directly beside a Shell gas station. The store hosts a cute diner/deli. There is seating all over the place. It looks like Oprah supplied the empowered sayings on the gifts and the Duck Dynasty crew decorated. This place is awesome. You can find great artsy painting for reasonable prices. The store even has a guest book. The employees are nice. This is worth driving out of the way to visit. Don't forget to look up. Apple fritters and their food smells amazing. Sandwiches are pretty decent, and the service is pretty quick. There's a store side of it where they sell all these quirky wine gadgets, trinkets, cards, salsas and spices and such. And they have a pretty good wine selection, too! If you get them on the right day, they have wine tastings, and you get a percentage off of the wines they are currently offering for taste! All in all... Home fries were severely burnt (charred black) in some spots while undercooked in others. Whether you are out for a weekend drive, or if you are just in the mood for some good country cooking, this place is a must pull in. I went here while out in VA back in October. The leaves were just changing. The air was crisp. And they were roasting peanuts outside. The smell was amazing. We walked inside, ordered food to go, due to the fact that there was not one seat available. The food was delicious. The apple doughnuts were to die for. The Alpenglow, simply delicious. The country store was great, as they had a wide selection of everything from jams to jellies to t-shirts to candles. This review is not based on the food, because after being here for 45 minutes, the only thing I've had is one of their apple butter doughnuts, and some iced tea. Their ordering system seems extremely inefficient, as does their food delivery system. You order at the counter and then they wander around shouting numbers throughout the restaurant. The burned grease smell is horrible, but the flies outside and near the door are equally annoying. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, and a chicken salad sandwich, both of which we figured would be quick and pre-made, yet 25 min later here we are, still waiting. Great time to write a Yelp review though! (At least the doughnut was good, right?) Update: 52 minutes after we walked in the door, and ordered, we got our food. My husband's bbq sandwich was huge but the sauce was not what he was expecting. It was very acidic and smoky. He took one bite of the beans, and we agreed the cole slaw tasted like it came pre-made from a food service. My chicken salad was not much better, there was a ton of it- but it was flavor-less, and dry. It was reminiscent of the tubs of chicken salad from SAMs club, or Costco. Via Yelp I discovered this cute little place that has tons of personality. It has everything from a wall of hot sauces, racey t-shirts, and unique Virginia gift galore...Oh and piggies, piggies everywhere. It is a BBQ joint afterall. Just envision walking into Jethro Bodine's living room, The ladies behind the counter have country charm and service down pat. One of the cutest little touches is the tip jar on the counter that says "Tips are sexy." I had the BLT while my husband ordered the BBQ sandwich. The BLT was a little tough to chew threw and I didn't totally care for the nibble of BBQ I stone of my hubby's plate. It wasn't bad, I just wouldn't rate it up there with the best BBQ of all time. The bathrooms definitely need some work and were kinda stinky. HOWEVER...the apple cider donuts are cinnamon, sugary goodness. They have lots of other homemade pastry selections of which I didn't try to avoid expanding my waistline this trip, but I would love to come back just for how good those looked. If you're there just for the apple butter donuts, you can purchase at the gift store cash register rather than waiting in line at the restaurant. Anyway, I've had the ready-made Virginia ham sandwich, pork rinds (plain flavor), apple fritters, and, of course, the apple donuts. All were delightful. The Virginia ham sandwich was just sitting at the restaurant checkout counter asking to be eaten. So I grabbed one. Surprising because it tasted more like prosciutto than the Virginia baked ham I'm used to. But it was delicious and satisfying. The pork rinds were yummy as pork rinds are, definitely worth a purchase if you're used to the mass-produced grocery store pork rinds, with their tiny pieces and occasional pieces that almost break your teeth! The ones at Apple House are not so. The apple fritter was really good, with a unique glaze that tasted like vanilla. The apple butter donuts were tasty. Don't expect a typical donut; these are more like an apple version of carrot cake, shaped like a donut, fried, and covered in cinnamon sugar. That's right. This place has been here forever and serves some of the best apple donuts around. In the Fall they are extremely busy with people from the city who seem to complain about the lines and country decor. They have the best selection of hot sauces anywhere I have ever seen. We ordered a hamburger loaded and a bacon cheese burger which was cooked perfectly considering the orders that they had. The couple next to us ordered the Virginia Ham & Cheese sandwich I wanted to grab the other half, must next time. The local cider they have is fresh and a bit of Shenandoah Valley. I ordered the small pork BBQ sandwich, which arrived overflowing on a hamburger-sized bun and accompanied by pickles, chips, and coleslaw. I'm not a fan of coleslaw, but I could appreciate its freshness. The chips were nice and salty, too. But the BBQ was the highlight of the meal. It was tangy and a little spicy, with plenty of chunks of pork and sauce. I wish that the pork was a little more tender, as I really had to move my jaw to chew it up. But I was pleased overall because it tasted great. Also, try the doughnuts! They are clearly fried on the premises and they have a wonderful cinnamon flavor. The restaurant is also attached to a little store of sorts, which had an unparalleled selection of BBQ and hot sauces for sale. I was seriously blown away by that. I was not as impressed by the bathroom, which had an odd smell, but it did the job. And make sure you check out the slow-cooker on the side of the building. We always enjoy our visits to the Apple House. We usually go for a cheeseburger and come away with a couple of boxes of apple fritters. Today we did the same and the waitress was super helpful after my wife returned the fries we received because they were barely warm. My wife returned with fresh, hot fries. When putting catsup on the burgers and fries, it didn't take long to run out, so back my wife went again. The waitress was again super helpful and gave us a full catsup bottle. A few minutes later we were happily surprised by the waitress' return with a box of apple doughnuts for troubles. Wow! We were floored and will continue to stop at the Apple House for good old fashioned food, apple fritters, and before I forget, the experience of shopping the entire store! Fantastic little spot for a lunch break. Heading out of town my partner and I stopped off around 3 pm for lunch. Quick service (off hours, I understand) - food was freshly prepped. We got the pulled pork sandwiches with two sides - more than enough food for two. Highly recommend the coleslaw. And I don't like coleslaw. Fresh with that nice crunch.
