It's a bit of a tourist trap, keep that in mind. I'll address the gift shop area first. Imagine if Cracker Barrel had some dirty novelty items, less room to move around, and a more confusing layout.. that's what this is. Some pretty neat things but it's to cramped to comfortably look around. Now let's get to the food. Ordered the Wildcat, which is a pastrami and Swiss on an onion bun. They were out of buns so mine came on overly buttered rye toast. It was extremely light on the meat but the quality was decent. This came with a sliver of pickle.. not quite a quarter pickle.. but a sliver. Went with the kettle chips which I assumed would be made fresh but they came in a pack. My wife's sandwich was equally lacking, and fortunately for myself she makes melts/sammiches far better than here. The fresh donuts were hot and decent, not great and really small. The money is what really stomped me entirely into the dirt. $10 for a small sandwich and bag of chips? C'mon... I watched them pull lunch meat out of a blister pack and drop it on the grill. I was excited to try one of the several types of pork rinds they offer. Regular and BBQ is all I could find, except for the one lonely Salt and Vinegar bag in the gift shop. Beautiful little store and restaurant on the way to SNP. The pulled pork bbq was perfect- tangy and not too sweet. I don't like it when bbq is too sweet. My wife loved the Cole slaw, which was also nicely seasoned and not overly sweet. The Apple cider donuts are delicious as well. I'm a local. The donuts are very good and that's pretty much all I can say about the Apple House. They do alot of things ok, but not one thing great. The breakfast is greasy with that weird sausage patty this is slick and shiny like the ones from McDonalds. You know...the generic patties. Unlike the quality one at places like Cracker Barrel and Bob Evans. The burgers are also OK, nothing special and served with potato chips! Not fries. Fries are extra. The BBQ is store bought I think, or at least it tastes like it. Absolutely no smoke flavor in it. No burnt ends, or anything that would indicate authentic BBQ. Their and the Exxon bbq across the street tastes exactly the same! No kidding! All they got going for them is the gift shop / tourist trap. If you really want good BBQ, go into town during the summers in front of Two Fat Butchers. They have a smoker set up with carryout meals. Pulled pork sandwich, chips and a can of soda for $5! The BBQ is smoky, tangy, spicy, sweet, tender...everything you want your BBQ to be and more (husband thinks it's some of the best he's ever tried). The burgers are cooked-to-order, flavorful, and juicy. Bottom line: the food here is ridiculously good if you know what to get off the menu and love meat (if you couldn't tell from the above melodrama: get the BBQ platter for SURE, or the homemade burgers, bison included. Also, the baked and fried dessert goods as so many other reviewers have mentioned). The service is slower than molasses, but this is a country friggin' store in Linden friggin' VA. We in the cut up here y'all. But that's also why they make BBQ you'd slap your own mama for a taste of, too. We make a *point* of stopping here on our way back from trips to Shenandoah or beyond. Don't believe the hype about the donuts. They are OK, but that is because carbs deep fried and tossed in sugar usually don't taste bad. But you can get better out of a box of Entenmann's or a visit to Dunkin' Donuts. Yeah. I said it. Now the good thing I can say about the Apple House is they have some seriously good sandwiches and an amazing selection of hot sauces for sale. My favorite sandwich is the pastrami which you can get on rye, and slathered with mustard. The buffalo burger was a nice alternative to ground beef, but if you ask what I like best, the pastrami is where it's at. The staff are friendly and generous and willing to pile the meat on. Once they forgot my donut and hooked me up with three when I went back to the counter. That being said, there are two seriously negative points that caused me to review them so poorly. First is a small one, but one that has been an issue every time: Stinkbugs. Fumigate the place. You serve food here, and this is unacceptable. The first time, was a stinkbug creeping along my table while I ate. I picked it up in a napkin and tossed it outdoors. Second time, a stinkbug scared the hell out of a neighboring table of hipsters, so the gross factor was counteracted by the chuckle factor. Third time - no stinkbug (remember, it was super-cold this winter, and it was freezing out, so no surprise). At home, later that day, what do I see, but a stinkbug walking up my bedroom wall? It must have been clinging to my shirt all day. That dropped them from a delighted 5 stars to a happy 4 star rating. So seriously: PEST CONTROL! Second, inappropriate sexual material. Apple House is the restaurant equivalent of the guy in the trench coat with a bag of snickers and a rusty van with tinted windows parked by the playground. It is not cool to tell children tipping makes them sexy. However, at eye level, that is just what the average third grader reads off the tip jar at the counter. Am I prude? Sure, maybe a little. Follow this up with hot sauce bottles featuring women's tits, and big dick's hot sauce - again, at eye level for children - and I drop them from a happy 4 stars to a disgusted 1 star. Absolutely awful food and service. It took 45 minutes for us to receive our food. First, the order came out wrong -- the chicken salad sandwich was on white rather than wheat, and they didn't give us the donut that we ordered. Mistakes are fine, but they then returned with the sandwich on wheat, but left the white bread in the middle of the newly assembled sandwich. The sandwich was more of a mayonnaise sandwich than a chicken salad sandwich. The bison burger and potato salad were bland, bland, bland. The French fries we ordered with the burger had no flavor, were totally limp, and tasted like pure grease. All that said, the famed donut was pretty good. Not the best, but I wouldn't shy away from it. While you might expect the Apple House restaurant to be decorated like a nice mom and pop tourist spot, it was closer to a glorified gas station. This place is truly fantastic. A must-do when venturing out 66W toward 81. Adorable decor and friendly service and some darn good BBQ. Classic homemade donuts. Cannot wait to go back and try all the breakfeast food that looked killer good. Now THAT's some BBQ! The Apple House is a family restaurant nestled away just off Route 66 in Linden. You'd pass it up but for one thing it does right. Actually that's two things. 1) Applewood SMOKED BBQ.. Incredibly woodsy and tasty smoked in their smoker "Petunia". 2) The donuts... oh THOSE DONUTS.. apple donuts cooked with apple butter and no shortage of lard. Straight to arteries good. The other food items are basics such as subs, burgers (which are big), and a plate of insane cheese and chili fries that I recommend you don't get cause it will give you a heart-attack in one sitting. If I am in the neighborhood usually passing through Skyline drive, or checking out the wineries, I ALWAYS stop here for their BBQ and donuts. If I were thinking clearly, I'd probably give this three stars. The famous apple cider donuts need to be served piping hot to deliver on their promise, and sometimes aren't; the seasonal pumpkin donuts are dry and forgettable; the dining area isn't well ventilated, meaning you blink through donut smoke while you eat and smell like donuts for days after. The gift shop is an ADHD sufferer's nightmare, stuffed with inspirational cutesies, Vera Bradley, and $22 apple-and-pumpkin-pie flavored wine that alas tastes just as gross as it sounds. Think the Cracker Barrel gift shop, only with more alcohol and fewer obnoxious wicker chairs. But! A childhood full of magical visits to a place does something to your rational mind. I love the Apple House because it reminds me of driving down i66 toward i81, singing Christmas carols with my family and stopping by for juuust one hot donut (and a bathroom break). It's about family and love for me--as it is, I suspect, for the extraordinarily kind and polite staff. Served hot, those donuts are better than anything you can imagine. There are a couple of slam-dunks on the dining menu too. I dissolve in a puddle of moans every time I bite into "the Virginian," their grilled ham and cheese sandwich. I find their savory specialty, the pork barbecue, a little generic, but its talents shine in those delicious barbecue cheese fries. (Yeah, don't come here if you're on a diet.) And pick up a "pumpkin bread" to go. It's not so much bread as bread pudding, and my God, is it good. As I chewed through my last lunch here, I got a little teary. It could have been appreciation for the deliciousness. It could have been nostalgia for the happy family life that has brought me here so many times over the years. Very small portion of meat on a plain hamburger roll served with a tiny pickle, some potato chips, and cole slaw. The slaw was delicious. Everything else was kind of gross. It felt like we were eating in a national park cafeteria. Onion rings were battered in thick, hush puppy-like batter (1/8" at least) and were greasy as could be. Now I'm really a fan of the gift shop and the wine store selection more so than the little restaurant part. Not that certain food wasn't so bad but unfortunately what I got was. Bison burger, it should never ever be over cook that is just criminal. However wife's cheese steak was really good. Service for the restaurant is super slow I don't know what they were doing there but it took a loooooooooooooong time just to fix some cold sandwiches for the table next to us let alone hot for wife and me. I don't' know maybe they were just having a baad day back there in the kitchen. We did really really enjoy the charm of this quaint little place. It has such a certain thing about it that says small town country mountainous. Hard to describe but we really liked it. Lots of little things all about this shop I was even trying to get one of those Daniel Boon coon skin hats for wife but she wasn't really going for that. We did manage to do some wine tasting while there with local wineries being support by them. Several bottles came home with us after that. Other little things include Christmas trinkets, local preserves and local honey being sold. Just a nice dark quaint feel to it....... I just said that right? I'm loving it. Wife and I had a nice little time there exploring all the little nooks and cranny's of this old place. So come here for the local charm, the local preserves, the local wine not so much for the restaurant part unless you are getting it fast and cold. We come here every year after Apple picking in nearby Markham va where hartland and stribling orchard are. It's been I think 8 years and counting every fall since we have been in DC. Embarrassingly I have only had the bbq pork sandwich bc it's tradition, and honestly it's good bbq! I gave it 3 stars because it's never quite a 4 or 5 star experience mainly bc I feel like there are some fundamental flaws with this place. First, one bathroom and a kind of dirty one. There has never been a time in 8 years where i have not waited in line. Having a young child and a diaper change is impossible so we change in our car. But even pre child I've always been horrified by the one bathroom. Second, why is there always a huge line? This weekend there was ONE cashier. We waited in lines for what felt like years! Third, it feels kinda dirty eating inside when there are flies everywhere and this year there were a lot of flies inside. This also seems like an easy fix. Enough negative, here is why we come back year after year! First, I liked the bbq! I get the small sandwich which comes with chips and coleslaw. Good coleslaw too. Second, I like the apple donuts! They always get me in line. Third, I'd rather drive here than eat at the orchard even though I know they sell food. Maybe it's the tradition. I'm new to the VA area so we ventured out to 66W to go tubing with a few friends. After a full day in the water and in the sun - we were hungry. The Apple House was nearby so we decided to try. From the minute you walk in, it has a yard sale with so many gems. From home decor, to dinnerware, to very interesting reading materials. I was hooked already without even trying the food. Onto the food. I ordered the chicken breast sandwich (absolutely amazing) and my bf and basically everyone we were with ordered the pulled pork sandwich which looked delicious even though I'm no pork eater. The sides were baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw etc. All delicious of course. We ordered the apple cider donuts since they were recommended over the apple fritters but I could tell they were the bees knees too. Pros: The apple donuts are great when freshly made. The apple dumplings are sooo tasty. The apple crumb pie is really good too. I've had the breakfast, and it's good in a Waffle House kind of way. Cons: The barbecue is very saucy and good, but not as good as you would hope from a place that specializes in barbecue. They rarely have the very tasty apple dumplings. The decor is not as small town, country cute as the outside indicates. It's a little more gas station/rest stop-ish. The restrooms are generally pretty icky. Good Eats on the way to Sky Line Drive. The Apple House is a craft store and restaurant that serves up some tasty down home country food. It's a great stop on the way to Sky Line Drive to refuel and get ready to see the amazing sites of the Shenandoah. Breakfast is served all day. The most expensive breakfast platter that they offer is $6.99 and comes with 3 eggs, two pancakes, bacon, sausage, ham and two doughnuts. The meal is huge and the doughnuts are apple cider doughnuts that are rolled in cinnamon sugar that are worth the trip alone. We had the lunch platter for $7.29. It comes with BBQ chopped pork that is smoked over hickory and apple wood providing it with a sweet smokey flavor and piled on a soft bun, next to the Apple House beans which are every type of bean (garbanzo, navy, kidney, cannelli and black) in a spciy sauce, coleslaw, chips, a pickle and a medium soda. It was a sweet deal for under $10 and some of the best BBQ in the DC area. We got two doughnuts for dessert ($1.20; they're $.55 a piece) and our meal was complete, cheap and very good. read more

Yes, this place is as good as other Yelpers say. Prices are very reasonable and portions are generous. I'm not usually into places where the fries are called "American Fries", but I give Apple House a pass. It's more welcoming than the prominent Christian literature stands in the cafe area would initially suggest (to this agnostic). They have breakfast all day, and some of the breakfast combos come with 2 of their donuts. Even better if you've been hiking or wine tasting all day, after 4pm they start dinner service. One of the dinner specials is all-you-can-eat pancakes. The BBQ is pretty good but my favorite are their baked beans, which is an unusual combo of pinto, black beans and chickpeas with a lot of pineapple. The buffalo burgers are good too. If you don't like Vera Bradley or Crocs there's not much in the store section for you, although the selection of VA wine is pretty good - and you can get some bottles cold in the easy-to-miss cooler behind the cafe register. read more

The Apple House is a total gem! We were on our way down to Lucas and wanted to stop for lunch. Thank you Yelpers for the great recommendation. The pictures looked cute and who doesn't love a local joint. This is not only a restaurant but a store and a bar all in one. Great selection of sauces, jams, wine, hot sauce, and knickknacks. It was heaven for those of us starting Christmas shopping. The food was also great! Friendly service, reasonable prices, and huge portions. It has a convenient location, it's next to the road to Shebandoah National Park. And it looks very local. We stopped to try a doughnut and drink some coffee. Inside is even more cuter than outside. It has a small market with local prduducts like honey from Virginia. The doughnuts are very tasty and cheap ($0,79 each). But they are very small. My husband couldn't resist to eat a second one. Fantastic Place to Visit on your way to Shenandoah National Park - Front Royal Entrance. Love a dozen Apple donuts before our hike. Make sure you get them piping hot and they're entirely different when eating them lukewarm. Sandwiches are A-OK but nothing special. I'd get the Pork Rinds too. Cannot recommend the Apple Donuts enough. read more
