This place is amazing. The breakfasts, apple cider donuts and salty ham sandwiches are crazy great. What makes it even better is the new pub they opened up in the old retail area. Lots of great craft beers from local breweries and it is roomy and well decorated; something that was an issue in the breakfast area. To top it off, just tried the pastrami sandwich and it is the best I have ever had... and I grew up in New England, which has great pastrami. If in the area, you must stop here. Went to the Shenandoah national park for a few hours and me and my gf had to grab something to eat and this place plus the reviews sounded promising. We ordered two pulled pork sandwiches and a 6 pack of donuts. It came out to be over $40 dollars and it was the definition of ok. The donuts are advertised as if they are extremely good but they tasted like store bought donuts. However, the French fries were very good and the employees were nice so that redeemed my experience a little bit. I do not think that I would comeback here for the food. read more

We were in Shenandoah recently and stopped by at the Apple House twice. The first time we had their pulled pork sandwich. I personally thought they added too much sauce and not enough of BBQ pork flavor. It was also too salty, I couldn't finish it. However, we did get a dozen apple doughnuts and they were heavenly!! The second time we had breakfast and I have to say they were so yummy (but huge serving!!). We also stopped by at the Kettle Korn truck right next to the Apple House and we are hooked!! We're from Philadelphia so we have to wait a while until we return (just for the Kettle Korn and some apple doughnuts!). read more

I'm not sure what the big deal about this pace is. The warm apple flavored donuts are good, but the food is very average and not exactly cheap. All in all, a very touristy stop along I-66, worth it if you're hungry and can't wait to get to Front Royale. read more

Go for one reason, the hot out of the fryer apple butter cinnamon donuts! I prefer them hot but we always get a dozen to go. The breakfast menu was just changed eliminating the "little of everything #10" so we had the large biscuits and gravy for $10.99. It was good but lacked a creamy, milk gravy but was more of a little cleared gravy. Good but we will stick with coffee and donuts from here on. The Unbearable Whiteness of the Apple House: Right off the interstate lay the Apple House of Linden, VA nestled amongst lovely greenery and clear blue skies. Pulling up, you may notice a gently placed National Rifle Association (NRA) sticker on the door. The folks coming in and out of the Apple House tend to be whiter, local, and older people. On this occasion, we saw maybe 1 or 2 people of color inside. However, the hostility and somewhat discrete discomfort of some guests was actually quite apparent. I did not feel welcome here. I realize where I am and was. I am no fool to think that Linden, VA would be home to individuals you might find in coastal city coffee shops. However, I was still a bit shocked and taken back at how my presence very clearly offended a gentleman and his family. They did not take too kindly my humanity. I want to forewarn any other person of color in search of donuts, Apple cider, and other treats that you may not feel welcome or be welcome. I would say, it felt similar to that scene in Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds where the Nazi hunters are in a nazi bar and tensions are high. As for the food- mediocre at best. Diner food doesn't have to be offensive. Diner food shouldn't be foul. Diner food shouldn't make you question how old the eggs are. The coffee was absolutely atrocious and I am not sorry. The coffee tasted like asphalt. Like bong water. Yes, bong water coffee. I won't be coming back here, I must say. All respect to the line cooks. But it left me feeling empty, unfulfilled, and depressed. On our way out, we stopped by Shenandoah National Park only to find it cost $25 to enter. It was loss after loss on this fall time excursion. I've had better bbq in Kansas City. Pulled pork tasted a little dry even. The cole slaw was soggy and heavy on the mayo, which I usually like but not this time. The grilled cheese was standard. The cook definitely likes to use butter tho. The storefront is very cute, and makes for a nice picture. Super duper cheap, but I'd rather pay more for better food. read more

Great find! BBQ pulled pork sandwich is pretty good. Mine was pretty wet unlike other reviews which said it was dry. Not the best I've ever had, but a good sandwich for being right off the highway. The buffalo chips aren't very spicy, but much better than the regular fries. Pork sundae is not as big as they say, but the combo of mash potatoes and pulled pork is tasty. Buffalo burger was indeed overcooked, although my friend never stated a temperature. read more

Cute gift shop. They sell things like TY beanies, purses and whatnots for the ladies, seasonings and BBQ sauces and candy. Nice just to browse in if you don't buy. There is food offered, I haven't tried more than some samples which I thought were good. read more

We pass this down the road on 66 when we are heading to 81 - which is about 10 times a year. It is a gift for the apple doughnuts alone. Wowser. To the yelper that said "They won't survive the trip home" believe her, because they won't. We always order a dozen to go and the smell entices us before we are ever back on the highway - hot, sugary and just plain yummy and fresh. Go for the doughnuts. Stay for the hospitality and the cool gift shop. They also have an soft serve ice cream truck out back that for [about] $2.00 you can get an enormous soft serve ice cream in the warm weather months. So good with a hot, tasty doughnut melting on your tongue. We haven't tried any of their breakfasts/lunches/dinners but we find the dining room, kitchen and bathrooms to be exceptionally clean and haven't noticed a fly problem any of the several times we have been in there [which other yelpers have mentioned.] Enjoy! read more

Stumbled onto this small spot on our way to enjoy skyline drive. Nestled almost right off the 66 highway, we were drawn to the place due to hunger and the big grill near the front of the building. Unfortunately that day there was no BBQ available however the sandwiches were good, the staff friendly and the store attached to the restaurant offered a lot of interesting trinkets. The one thing we couldn't understand was why there were such large lines for donuts. How good they could be? Well...let's just say I would make that 1.5 drive just for those darn donuts. They were apple cinnamon-y goodness. I can't say the food was too special, I would have likes more options in BBQ but oh well, you can't win them all. One thing? The eats weren't cheap and the wait for a table a bit long but we weren't in a rush. There's also an ice cream stand right outside near the property. Seemed pretty popular with hand dipped cones but we didn't indulge. The parking is good and an extra gravel lot in the back. I love this place and always make it a point when I'm going out west to hike, pick apples, or go to wineries. You gotta start with apple cider donuts... then killer biscuits and gravy and if it's lunch time, a pulled pork sandwich. So good! I think of this place as a "real life" Cracker Barrel , but better. Long lines on the weekend but plenty to look at while you wait (Think Cracker Barrel but smaller and more local goods) . You place your order at the counter and they bring it out to you. Food arrived quickly and the table turnover seems to flow. Now to the food. Breakfast is served all day- always a plus. We order one BBQ and one Breakfast. BEST - home fries.Nothing special to look at but heavily seasoned and browned to perfection . Potato salad also wonderful - not too much mayo and a nice (maybe dill) accent. Baked beans with apple and chick peas were unique. NOT the Best: scrambled eggs were flat thin disk like an omelette with no filling. Prefer my scramble soft and fluffy. The ham had a nice flavor but was served thin like lunch meat and would have thought a steak cut side. We would come again and try the apple fritters! read more

What a great place! They really don't sell apples but they do sell apple cinnamon donuts that are made right there and served warm. Absolutely delicious. We had some lunch on that way back from a West Virginia getaway and it was pretty decent given the place was packed and busy. The gift store has all kinds of unique things including a good selection of beer wine and hot sauces. The staff is super friendly. It's not the absolute cheapest place but it's so unique and the donuts are soooo good. They also sell fritters, bacon, Virginia peanuts and other goodies so if you can get there during the week when it's not so busy it's worth it. read more
