Perfect setting and wonderful food. I've been going to the Back Eddy for over 20 years. It is always a high point of the summer for me.

Great food and an amazing view! I had the lobster roll, which was excellent. The view at sunset is exceptional.

Awesome little restaurant near Horseneck Beach! We had to wait a bit for outdoor dining but it was worth it. There's a little outdoor bar you can grab a drink at while you wait with beautiful view of the Westport river. Definite island vibes at this place. Food & staff were fantastic. Great little place on the water. Went for lunch around 12:30 and were greeted by the super friendly host. When asked for a table outside, she told us they had just opened a half hour ago and the patio completely filled up. She quoted us about 45 mins, and told us we could get a drink at the bar and take it to one of the dozens of seats on the dock. It was not even a half hour before we got our table. Our waitress was... okay. We noticed another waitress greeting her table and explaining specials to them. When our server came back with our drinks, I asked her about specials and she just pointed to a paper on the table. The food came out very quickly. I like my chowder thick, and this one was watery, though it was full of bacon, potatoes, seafood, and flavor. The stuffed clams were awesome! We'll definitely be back. read more

The hostess and all the serving staff were DELIGHTFUL. Great timing to get a window seat by the lovely water/view. Unfortunately, the steamers, (not fully steamed and for some reason only a few had bellies. ) Lobster was rubber. Did not have a strong 'lobster cracker' at all to use to crack, it was flimsy and just not what I've had elsewhere. We left thankful our deserts were excellent. The coffee creme brule, INCREDIBLE DELISH. Parking in SUMMER in that busy afternoon is pretty bad to try to back out of your slot if you have other parked cars in back of you and beside you. Just too tight. We just love the restaurant/location but just can't ever justify the prices for the quality of our meals. Best serving staff I've had I must say again, lovely young ladies and a lad, but they are not the cooks on that day. read more

The one star is because of their lack of Covid protocols, not so much the food. Our kale Caeser salad, steamers and tuna were delicious. The halibut was overcooked. The scary part was that the staff was not masked and our server told us she has not been vaccinated. It is a dangerous place to eat. They do not inform you of any of this. We were among the few masked patrons and ate outside, but were appalled to learn about our server when we happened to ask. I advise not going there, especially now that Westport Covid cases are increasing. read more

Moved to Westport four years ago and found this hidden gem. The food was always fresh and new menu items were added here and there. However, since COVID-19 things have slowly gone downhill. The menu has limited items and the portions are smaller. All this while the prices have gone up. I understand the situation with the pandemic. However, if you are going to charge more make it worth my time to patronize your establishment. (Below is a picture of our recent take out order. We ordered the steamers as an app which were good and no sand. I ordered the ribeye steak ( which was a little pricey at over $30 for the smaller size) perfectly cooked medium rare and tasted great. I was avoiding the carbs and asked the waitress if I could have veggie instead of the starch potato or fries. She said sure that they had zucchini. Yes I went with the veggie. It was about 5 slices of zucchini which was fine....until I received the check and was charged 6 dollars! This was my first time coming here and I was so impressed the food was fantastic. Our waiter was okay but she seemed new so it was fine. The food came out fairly quickly, I got a hamburger with fries. The hamburger was really good nice and juicy and the fries were delicious. Best fries ever!! We had a lovely family dinner the 20th. Our server was excellent. I wish I knew her name as she made our experience wonderful. Our seat, window side was marvelous. The wine was great and cocktails too (according to the group). Food was ok for my boyfriend (tuna) and my steamers were great. I love fresh tuna and often enjoy off the boat fresh when at my Caribbean house. My man's tuna did not taste wonderful nor fresh. Also, for 27.00, his meal came with grilled veggies, no starch. He had to pay for cornbread. The other diners did not comment on their food. Here's where thing weren't wonderful. I am eating Whole20 and explained to my server I needed to have some dietary considerations. No dairy, no gluten, no sugar but I love fish and need potato as my starch. She told me I could not have a baked potato which i get, not on the menu but I can have sweet potato and asked for the fries. She said no, it only came with the pork (which I do not eat/meat). Also switching for others to a different starch was not allowed. These rules seem rather rigid for a high end establishment that serves 27+ per entree. I am in hospitality and honestly, have never heard of such inflexibility. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Without my balanced plate, I am often hungry. I left feeling a bit down on my feeling about Back Eddy. We renamed it "house of rules" due to a few other issues. Noise levels are high, the setting is pretty. A great spot on a fabulous summer evening! Sitting by the ocean what a view and a PHENOMENAL sunset! Sometimes I really forget how fortunate I am to live so close to the ocean. The cocktails were simple, so there isn't too much to say about that...so we'll just got straight to food! Our server Beth was the AWESOME and this Bostonian was pretty excited she told us the soup of the day was LOBSTAH bisque (with a true Boston accent). Unfortunately, it was bland and it wasn't even topped with pieces of lobster-Myself and three others that ordered a bowl thought the same thing. We should have stuck to the clam/corn CHOWDAH as the other folks in our party were extremely pleased with their choice! The steamers and stuffies were great. I have loved the Back Eddy for over10 years although this yearI have been so disappointed. Although the food is always good it is the portion size. I realize the pandemic has raised food cost but my meal today was tiny. The soup was 1/2 cup in size and was $9. The mussels ( maybe 15 mussels)which we also love were 1/2 the size and had one slice of bread. I would much rather have the portion size that you had prior to the pandemic and paid more for it.. so sa!!! read more

Overpriced! 75$ for 3 sandwiches and 6 oysters. And you don't even get bread as an appetizer. They give you goldfish instead which was poor for this class of a restaurant. The actual food I had was ok but not so great that it deserved the price attached. Also extremely tacky to add a $14 6 pack of Narraganset beers to buy for the staff.... you overprice the food, expect a rip, and want customers to buy beer for you? Give me a break. Tourist trap!!! We had our rehearsal dinner at The Back Eddy in August of 2019. I can't say enough good things about Sal and his crew. They 100% made it a night to remember. The harbor view, the wind coming off of the water. We were nervous because you never know what kind of weather you'll get in late August/September and the room is not air conditioned. It was perfect. They let my mom and sister design the room to fit our wedding theme which gave the room a personalized style for our rehearsal dinner. We cannot thank Sal enough for his swift communication and adjustments when people in our party couldn't eat what we picked for the menu. One of the most incredible and memorable experiences of my life. We love TBE and of course have gone many times before. Can't wait until our next visit (tonight!). read more

We all were highly disappointed after years of loving this restaurant. Why?? Read on. We arrived, a party of 6. We asked the hostess for a booster seat. She said "right away". We were shown to our table after much ado. We sat and waited, and waited, and waited for the booster seat. The remainder of out party arrived while the two of us devoured the rather small dish of Goldfish crackers on the table. The booster seat still had not arrived despite the waiter bringing two drinks for us, and by the way NOT refilling the Goldfish crackers while we waited even though there were kids in out party. Once the balance of our party was seated, we again asked for a booster seat. We also ordered our appetizers at the same time. As the apps were delivered we asked the person delivering the appetizers for a booster seat and she finally managed to find one and deliver it to us. Whew what a chore. As the dinner order was taken we detected a distinct attitude on the part of the waiter. We asked for favorites which we have had in the past, we found out that the menu has changed and the old standby's are no longer served. So we asked for some minor modifications and we were told curtly that no changes were allowed. All we asked for was that the scallops which were advertised as the local fresh delicacy were sans bacon and oh we also asked for broiling instead of frying. Nope not going to happen so we accepted the scallops as served, to out dismay. The bacon was totally undercooked, and had to be peeled off. The plate arrived with a green slime like substance. We were told that it was pesto but it surely did not taste like any pesto we have ever had, and believe me when I say we have had a lot of pesto. It was bitter and unpalatable. The additional vegetable on the plate were also unpalatable such that two of us rejected them after a small taste. When the plates were collected after the meal, the waiter did not even ask if we enjoyed the food. He collected a plate of uneaten food don't you think he would have noticed and queried us? one of our guests ordered a steak well done and it was served rare. At this point we are not surprised by anything. In addition one guest ordered the fish and chips and did not eat them mostly because the last time he was at this restaurant he was ill after eating and could not take a chance at eating the food. So the best food served was the children's chicken fingers and fries which basically fed all six of us. The long and short of it is that, we are so highly disappointed, at spending $175.00 prior to the tip for inedible food, and leaving hungry, we will never return. We can not even for a moment recommend that you dine here despite the view. There are way nicer restaurants that are less expensive and better food not too far away. read more

I had so much fun the day we ended up here after riding a Ducati around SE Mass, I might be giving it a slightly too enthusiastic review. But the view is so beautiful and the friendly bartenders make strong good drinks. My clam chowder was spectacular and unusually light. If you're looking for thick, heavy New England clam chowder you will be disappointed but I wish I could find such chowder in any of the other cities I spend time. The cod appetizer (in a clamshell with sausage) was terrific. Westport, MA as John D noted, is hardly Padnaram (where Duchovny lives), so maybe the prices seems high. But coming from LA, NYC and SB, they seemed reasonable to me. The Back Eddy is large so even if we had been there later when it was more crowded, it still would have felt calm and quiet. Given this is "the only game in town," it's a 4-star. read more

Yes they were of good size and tasty but there were only 3! Do the math with me....that's $10 per scallop. We were there on a busy Saturday evening in July...waited about 45 minutes to be seated...but could wait outside where they have a raw bar and a bar...scenery is beautiful...people very friendly...seated inside by a window server was prompt and Rey knowledgeable...she took our order and food appeared in a short time....I had the rib eye steak it was cooked perfectly...med rare...the rest of my party had sea food dishes all were devoured... all in all a very pleasant experience... it was bit loud but filled with people having a really nice time. read more

Our first time in Westport my boyfriend and I decided to dine at The Back Eddy one evening. Other Yelpers advised making a reservation which we did but were unfortunately not able to get outdoor seating. We were seated next to a window so we still had a great view and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. Our server, Nicole, was outstanding, friendly, and informative. We started with the Maine mussels and we could not stop saying how delicious they were. The sauce was unbelievably delicious. Nicole offered more bread to dip in the sauce and we did not waste any. I chose the salmon and my boyfriend went with the lobster. We cleaned our plates. The salmon was served with noodles, each bursting with flavor. Not one bit of lobster left. Side of generous portion of corn bread was perfect. We can't wait to come back next time we visit. One of the best meals and experiences we've had! Kudos to all at The Back Eddy!!! read more

Would have been appreciated if the owner would have moved forward with some creative covid conscious adjustments like other restaurants have done. Heating lamps, fire pit tables, ect..so that folks have the option to dine outdoors. First off, what a great view this restaurant has! That alone makes it worth a visit. Secondly, the service is top notch; Cheryl was excellent in every way. The menu? They probably could use a few more chicken or beef options, but I loved my pork sandwich and fries. The speed at which the meals came out is extraordinary and it was fresh and hot. Very expensive dinner for 2 not great at all Fish was over cooked and dry my fiancé had baked stuffed shrimp which had a strange taste which she couldn't eat and an unpleasant smell.When mentioned to the owner he was rude and obnoxious telling us nobody else is complaining .Im assuming he meant to shut up and don't complain which drew unwanted attention towards us as if we did something inappropriate . I recommend driving by this overpriced shack and find a reputable place to dine. If you like the area try the Bayside on Horseneck Road. Not as expensive, food is good,and more of a friendly family atmosphere. Overall not pleased especially after waiting an for our dinner and being humiliated by the owner of all people. I have eaten here many times. The food is good, the location outstanding, but the prices afford more refined service than is presented. I ate at the Back Eddie this week with 7 girl friends. The service was fast, however the wait staff never knew who got what. When you have $26 + entrees, the staff should not have to ask where each one goes. It should also come out at the same time, there was not a big gap, but we sat wondering - was I the only one who for an appetizer? Only to have two minutes go by and the rest of the salads were delivered. In short polish the service and it will get more stars. Great striped bass ceviche. read more

Nice piece of swordfish with flavor wrecked and overridden by char. Kids burgers and buns charred way too far. Char is not a seasoning. Head chef seemed cool and brought out a tuna tail to show the kids, but he needs to be the kitchen boss not the kitchen staff buddy. I hate leaving a restaurant with regret, and I had high hopes. Many people suggest we take this drive down to Westport. It was a deep drive route 88. It's def worth the drive. There is a marina attach to the back eddy. Restaurant is right by the cove. Very peaceful and scenic locations. Food was delicious I had the tuna dish on the menu. Order fresh raw oysters for apps along with caprese salad. My son enjoy the tenders and fries very much that he has two rounds of that. Kids get Ice cream if they finish there dinner. Service was especially our service B was very attentive. read more
