Now, I must disclose that I didn't actually leave with a bike. Their bikes are for mountain riders with experience that want a really nice high end bike for some major riding. I'm giving 5 stars because the service was great. We hung out there for about 30 minutes looking around and tried out an e-bike and another mountain bike. They gave me all the ins and outs, allowed us to test ride explaining everything. They didn't seem rushed to get to the next customer and I felt very taken care of. Worst customer service ever, brought my bike in for a tune-up, picked it up and it was shifting worse than before. Brought it back. Was told it was done and went to pick it up only to find out the mechanic had broken the brake lever while test riding the bike. They kindly offered me a $120 XTR replacement for a part they broke. I am happy to pay for the same part as I understand stuff happens but that was not an option. They could have easily offered to use one of the demo bike brakes while they waited for a new part but the answer was no. It was either a $120 XTR part or no bike. I am leaving for Sedona for 2 weeks tomorrow and I am not completely screwed without a bike. Thanks, guys. read more

Mike and his team are so wonderful!! They are all very experienced and are psyched to give advice, when it comes to gear and beta. Mike spent over an hour explaining different types of bindings and skis, just to help educate me. Paul spent over 2 hours with me fitting my new AT boots to the perfect size. Local that has spent quite a bit of money over the years, finally had to post. Terrible customer service, confrontational when I asked about a discount because their price was so much higher than everyone online, this was after buying a bunch of stuff. Don't even care about the discount that much, just learn how to talk to people or go get a different job. I'm glad these guys are here, they're one of the last mountain shops around, and I really want to give them 5-stars, but I can't... Online retailing is killing these businesses, so what are the reasons we should spend more money to shop here? Knowledge. A Gear Selection. Value in the form of Service, that you do not get online. This shop does well on the first two - they know their stuff, they have great gear, it's nice to have them around. On the last, not so much. Here's my issue: If one should buy a full retail ski setup, and the shop offers to mount the bindings, wax the skis, and cut the skins - well, that's the VALUE you get for paying full retail at a Brick N' Mortar shop. But then... it turns out that the ski mounting and waxing skin cutting is an EXTRA $80? And a surprise - we didn't know it was a charge until we had already paid. Really? I've never been charged *extra* for service like that when buying skis. I can do (and have done) *all* of those things myself! They also (surprise) added a few extra items (more than $100) that maybe we needed, maybe we don't, which is kind of weird to learn about at the cash register. I'm inclined to let that slide... but also strange. So... weird. Yea, we got some good advice and bought a pair of good skis for someone who is newish to backcountry skiing. But here's the thing: at least TWO more people (including me) are really, really close to also buying a new pair of skis and bindings and skins. But this kind of service? Kind of makes us more inclined to shop elsewhere. Sorry guys - if you want to stay in business, don't engage in weird behavior that reeks of an inexperienced friend getting taken advantage of. Word gets around. You, as a brick and mortar retailer, have got to ADD VALUE somewhere, especially on low marginal cost things, like basic ski setup. read more

Not a bad bike shop. We were waiting to get our bikes and get on the road forrrreeevveeeerrrr though. It took like 20 - 30 minutes to get us 6 bikes. The process should have taken about 10. We were ignored a lot. People weren't helping us or were kind of incompetent. BUT, they were also friendly, so I'll give them that. It wasn't a bad experience...we were just sitting around waiting waaaaayyyyy too much. It took forever to start our ride. The store is packed with stuff: bikes, skis, etc. Mountain bike rental is $10/hr. The store has clip in pedals available if you have shoes. read more

Updated Review: Did a fine job tuning my bike. The Tech was nice, informative and helpful. That said, when I brought up I was thinking about upgrading/changing some components they didn't pony up any of their wares and suggest anything they sold. I had to ask specifically, which they were then helpful with. No one wants pushy, but they do want sales staff to take the hint and make suggestions about what the shop does carry. Old Review: The two times I've been in for mountain bike service questions they acted like they couldn't be bothered. And that was AFTER they finally even recognized I was in the store. I had a great experience with both the owner, Mike, and one of the bike techs/employees, Josh. We stopped in to check out their selection of full suspension bikes, specifically the Julianas. The place was pretty busy as usual, but we were fortunate enough to get some quality help from Mike who talked to us and showed us a couple different bikes for about a half hour. There was no sales pressure and Mike was able to listen to our needs in a bike and stay in our price range too! After some discussion, he actually order a bike specifically for my girlfriend in her size and color, even though we hadn't commited to buying it yet. He was very knowledgeable about the bike, its components, the differences between comperable bikes, and was able to make sense of it all for us. No condenseding comments or any "Know-it-all" attitude. Fast forward a week, the bike was in and ready for demo. Josh helped fit the bike and adjust it for my girlfriend, sharing all the adjustments he was making so that we could continue to adjust on the trial if we needed to. He talked us through some of the components that were new to us and we were on our way. Long story short, she loved the bike and bought it that day. Back at the shop, Josh followed through with the rest of the transaction and we also discussed some modifications to get the perfect fit. Along with the purchase of the brand new bike was the promise of life time service on the bike at no extra cost (within reason of course). Because we haven't needed any work done yet, I can't review their quality of service yet. But the shop was great, very inclusive throughout the whole process, and we look forward to catching some store rides with them in the future. I would definitely recommend this shop over other local shops and shops at the lake. read more

Today I went to the Backcountry for the second time in two weeks. The first time I needed to have my child's bike tuned up and a brake repair. The fixed it the same day after I had been told by other shops that I couldn't be helped for at least a week. Not only did the fix it right away but the charge was almost $20 less than what was quoted. Then today I went by because I needed a bike rack removed from my car. Nick immediately came out to my rescue and spent the time to figure it out until it was removed. This was very helpful to me and reduced my stress level greatly. I highly recommend this bike shop. This is a great local shop with a huge selection of backcountry ski, split board, climbing, mountaineering, and other outdoor gear. The owner, Mike and his team are super friendly and are experts on the Sierras and on the gear they sell. I particularly recommend their boot fitting expertise. I've only had limited buying experience with this shop so far - bought a avalung pack, a pair of Verts online, and had some friends rent helmets (where the 3-stars comes from as their helmet selection was limited. Store is really cramped, but staff is friendly. They have a great selection of backcountry gear although all of it is full price (i.e. might be cheaper online). They do rent splitboard with voile hardware, skins, and poles for $50 a day (pretty nice) although I have my own setup. I bet if I bought a big item I might give them a 4-star review (will update if I do that) as they seem super knowledgeable on the few questions I've asked them. read more

I've bought a couple MTN bikes, a split board, 2 backpacks, and an assorted amount of accoutrements from the BC. Staff has always been knowledgeable, straightforward and helpful. They've tuned my bike for free when all I needed was a rim trued. They've been great for me in the 15+ years I've been visiting, and they're really great for those just starting out in the Backcountry especially; be it hiking, biking, climbing or off-piste adventures. Great ambassadors of the outdoors. I've brought split-board renters there, they later decided to buy a setup, and all their rental fees went towards the purchase price; unasked. That sold me for good. As for some of the reviews about the staff, be reasonable judging service on a holiday weekend. You're not in Marin. read more

I've never posted a review before, but there have to be some consequences for how I was treated. Do not get your skis repaired / tuned at Backcountry! As an avid backcountry skier, I am very familiar with fixing my skis. I needed to get a core shot fixed on one of my skis and brought my skis into Backcountry. After showing Ian at the tuning counter the one divot that I needed filled, he said he could help me and took my ski into the shop. With his back turned to me, he then took a screw driver to the bottom of my skis and proceeded to dig out some of the other areas of my ski that had previously been filled. He then brought the ski back to me pronouncing that more work needed to be done -- thanks to his screw driver work, there were now several divots on my ski that needed to be filled. He thought he could pull a fast one on me, causing more damage to the ski and then charging me for the damage he created. read more

Rented a mountain bike there and... meh. They didn't have a good selection (= they had exactly one bike that would fit me) and the bike wasn't particularly well maintained. They didn't tune the suspensions to my weight. They didn't offer an extra tube for the ride. The following day I went to Cyclopath, which was $15 more expensive but, holy cow, they had a *huge* selection of bike. All carbon, bad-ass bikes. I know where I will rent from next time. read more

I live in Tahoe City and have a few older road bicycles - a Serotta and a Gitane. I took them in last year for tune up and some light repairs - just forgot to write a review. I can say having used multiple bicycle shops in and around Truckee/Tahoe that this is the ONLY shop I will take my bikes or buy cycling stuff from. There's zero snootiness from the bike mechanics and they were super helpful, explained the repairs, and were incredibly kind. The price for this area is middle of the road BUT if you just look at pricing you're missing the boat. I look at price, customer service and how well the repairs hold up as well as how the tune up went. Added together these guys win in a landslide in Truckee/Tahoe in my opinion... highly recommend read more

The shop is very busy and when I called they tell me they are busy until Saturday but to bring the bike in and they can check it on the fly. I had finicky, hard-to-adjust, squealing front and rear disc brakes. The Backcountry mechanics went above and beyond to dial in the pads and rotors along with a full bleed. And even though it was crazy busy during the pandemic, they still got the bike back to me really fast. Very impressed. read more

This place hooked me up with great light weight ski touring set-up, with Salomon MTN Lab skis, MTN bindings, ski crampons, along with a fresh cut pair of skins. Super friendly knowledgeable staff. It was awesome to talk to people who actually know the gear and have used it. They really helped me hone in on what I needed. A special thanks to Kalib, an awesome ski technician who did a great job dialing in my set-up. Since I went with a short length (176 cm) to save climbing weight, I wanted the bindings mounted set back on the skis so I could still push hard on the tips in the deep stuff. Kalib recommended mounting 4 cm back from the manufacturers standard, which I am just loving right now. The first couple days out and these skis climbed like champs. In some soft deeper settled powder in the trees, there was plenty of floatation even while pressing forward into the tips (still waiting to see if this will hold true in lighter deeper powder). In ice and breakable crust the skis just don't have enough weight to cut out super confident edge carving, but the short length, lightness and flexibility mean they turned on a dime. I flew off a couple of rocks and the tails just flexed like spring boards, making it feel like I was landing on a trampoline. The skis flexion seems to allow me to spring and bounce when I want to, but amazingly doesn't feel like I'm getting thrown around. The tips did fold a bit when I hit some hard crust at speed, but did not chatter, as if they were just conforming to the shape of the mountain without much vibration. I almost want to take them to the resort and try them in the moguls. It is taking me a while to trust the Tech bindings, so I have not pushed these skis to the limits, and so far I have not ejected. When the snow got crusty, I did some downhill skiing with the toe piece in "walk" mode, which should just keep you locked in, but I'm not sure this was necessary. read more

I came in from Park City, UT, where we have great biking. The Backcountry bike shop in Truckee, CA, was as good as they come. They had the rental bike I needed. I brought my own petals (they told me by phone that they didn't have eggbeaters), and they had no problems setting my bike up. The bike was good quality, and they set the suspension up perfectly. Everyone in the shop was friendly, giving me tips where to ride. While I didn't find a single track trail that I liked, Truckee is a great town for biking. I recommend going East on the Legacy Trail, even though it is paved. Next time I plan to scout out suitable (not too technical) single track trails. Ask for Caleb, when you visit The Backcountry. read more
