I was impressed by this restaurant! It has great ambiance and menu variety. I ordered the bratwurst sandwich, which was very good with the garlic sauce, sauerkraut, and dijon mustard. I've rated them 4 stars because of their potato chips. I'm 90% sure they're just ruffles potato chips, which is *fine*, but not up to par with the rest of the food. I expected them to be speciality or freshly made in some sort, not the same type of chips that you can get at a gas station or hot dog stand. I personally feel like restaurants get part of their reputation for having notable or unique side items, so I was disappointed by these basic chips. The garlic sauce is really good too, but it would be better appreciated if the dipping items were better quality. All in all, this restaurant has a great vibe and i'd likely return. read more

I went for the lunch the other day. I got there just in time before the restaurant started filling up completely. I enjoyed watching the bakers prepare desserts through the big window. There is a good selection of foods on the menu. I got the daily soup, which was the roasted red pepper soup. The baguette slices and garlic sauce are tasty. There is a bountiful selection of desserts and breads. I tried the Napoleon, but I will definitely try something else in the future if I ever get a chance to go back. The breads are fresh and quite large in size. The prices aren't too high. The prices for the breads are spectacular. I recommend taking home a loaf of bread if you get a chance. The schnitzel is tender and pretty good, but I wish there was some type of sauce to go with it. read more

My son and I went here for lunch. Tiny open floorplan seating, strange atmosphere. We ordered a hamburger plate and a chicken Caesar salad - which took 30 minutes to get, too slow. OMG! You just can't pass this place up. First off you walk in and the display case greats you with the worlds finest assortment of pastries causing you to start drooling and making it hard to focus on the fact you came to eat lunch. Then your eyes float up to the assorted European breads above the counter and you can barely constrain your carb cravings. When the friendly staff seat you your able to see into the pastry room as master craftsmen are creating more delicious confection arts. At this point your stomach is beating on your brain yelling feed me! So when you look at the Austrian and Spanish fusion menu that has just enough choice to be satisfied without being overwhelming, there is nothing to be missed on the menu. I recommend making the trip to Spain with the Barcelona burger or stroll the Alps of Austria with the Schnitzel Sandwich for your first visit. Then again just go on an empty stomach and make the European tour and get both. Save room for that desert and get some bread to take home for breakfast lunch and dinner! Martin did a fantastic job on our wedding cake. It came out exactly how I pictured it, and was delicious and beautiful...not to mention the price. His price was VERY reasonable, especially compared to some of the other nearby bakeries! Martin set up a tasting for us, and showed us his portfolio. He also provided the gorgeous cake stand and delivered and set up the cake for us in Pinehurst. I couldn't have been more pleased with it! read more

My fiancé turned 30 9/19/13, I am really big on birthdays and wanted to do something special for him. I had an old photo of his first birthday cake and decided to replicate it. I went into the bakehouse and was immediately greeted with friendly faces. I told the girls my idea and they discussed details with me and I was confident they knew what they were doing. The Bakehouse has the absolutely best burger - the Barcelona burger. I come here every visit to Southern Pines just to get one. It has the most amazing, delicious bun of any burger I've ever had. Somehow they manage to keep a delicious crust on the top and bottom of the bun, and it never gets soggy from the burger - I don't know how they do it, but it's awesome. The cheese is also wonderfully smooth and creamy and compliments the unique composition of the burger. The salad that accompanies it is OK - they could skip the raw white onions for me. The garlic dressing is very tasty. I have one criticism of The Bakehouse and it's not about the food. It's about the offensive use of Windex to clean the tables. I'm very sensitive to chemical cleaning products, and there's nothing worse than sitting down at a freshly wiped table that reeks of ammonia. This time I went to the rest room, dampened a paper towel with scented hand soap and wiped the ammonia off the table. This doesn't prevent the impact of every table around me being clean and the ammonia wafting over. It isn't even an effective disinfectant. Seriously - DITCH THE WINDEX!!! I'm giving The Bakehouse 4 stars - 5 stars for the food and 3 stars for the Windex. read more

They are third generation Austrian Bakers and wow it shows. I have been a customer for many many years. The deli meats they put on their salads and sandwiches i swear it must come from Europe. The quality is perfection. Their garlic sauce is legendary. Anything you buy just have it as a side. You will not be sorry! The pastries... a cut above anything you will find in any big city..and this is a small town. We are very lucky to have this place. Enjoy! read more

I stopped in for lunch and it was absolutely fantastic. The ladies working there are so friendly and are glad to go over the menu in detail with you. I had tuna salad on a buttery croissant and it was mouth-watering! The bakery was too good to pass up so I took home a tiramisu, and it was one of the best I ever had.
