The cinnamon roll ($3) was outstanding, probably as good as any I've had. We microwaved it for 25 seconds, which may have been the key (though we've liked it here before). It might be even better if they added a few raisins to it. We'll be back for this item periodically. We also tried a mango float ($6). It was good, and had more whipped cream in it than the one I'm used to, but I've probably had slightly better examples. For $6, it's not a great value: smaller than the cinnamon roll and not as good. I might get it again, but probably not at that price. This remains one of my favorite bakeries in town, and we'll be back periodically. Update: We tried another cinnamon roll. I've been a long time fan of Valerio's! They are a major Pinoy-bakery in the West Coast and are usually tied to Seafood City grocery store. But then my sister, let me know they have this very cool bakery which is just a trendier version. They still sell the staples: pandesal, pan de leche, puto, and all the other pinoy breads and desserts you could want. BUT - also a lot of ube based breads, Dubai croissants, and calamansi drinks. This space is TINY though, so walking in really smushes you in to look at their foods. They also did not have calamansi juice for their drinks, but I ended getting a Banana Con Yelo. My luggage home was STUFFED with bread since we do not have a pinoy bakery in Arizona. I highly recommend the ube brownies (comes with white chocolate), ube pistachio croissaint, Dubai croissant, ensymada, and of course, the pandesal. read more

I had someone buy me some goodies from The Baker's Son, so I've never been to the physical store yet. These were packaged well for traveling 6 hrs to Atlanta. I ordered whole wheat pan de sal (for health lol), ube ensaymada, kakanin sampler (looks like this had kutsinta, puto, puto flan, pichi pichi and something else I cannot remember the name of) and a big tray of puto flan. Price wise, I feel as if everything was super reasonable. Flavor wise, everything brought me back home. I love enjoying pandesal in the mornings toasted with coffee. The puto flan, I believed, was flavored but can't really taste it. The kakanin sampler to me had a weird taste - though my favorite here was the palitaw and puto of course. My favorite from this haul was the ube ensaymada that I wish I would have gotten more than one. It's stuffed with halaya and the bun itself is so stretchy and good topped with ube butter and cheese for saltiness. Next time I'm in JAX, I will definitely be stopping here to try more of their goodies! read more

**INITIAL REVIEW** The first time I heard about The Baker's Son by Valerio's was through my stepmom. She's been wanting to go here and buy some trad Filipino baked goods for household and friends. Fortunately, we had the chance to stop by because we had a tour to attend down in St. Augustine. We were finally close enough to justify a visit as we live on the Space Coast. Where The Baker's Son by Valerio's (which I will shorthand to TBS for the remainder of the review) is located is kind of annoying to get. Seriously, who designed the roadways in this part of Jacksonville? Eventually, my family and I made it to the "back parking lot" of TBS, and upon entering, I knew this place would be amazing with the sweet fragrance of ube wafting through the air. And I don't care what anyone says, ube is far more superior to taro. My stepmom was definitely the definition of "kid in the candy store" as she bought bags and bags of baked goods. I will say that after tasting them later on, they were excellent. I definitely would recommend the baked goods case where all the classic baked goods are on display. There were so many versions of pandesal that I had trouble picking one for my initial visit. Ergo, I got all of them. For me, the winner were the mixed dessert drinks. I think most people who "indulge into Filipino food" will know about Halo-Halo (Mix-Mix) as a dessert, but there were other dessert drinks including one made with cheese flan (I definitely got that one!). Price is on the high end of fair, but given that Filipino baked goods are a rarity compared to the rest of Florida, I understand. Ultimately, TBS is an excellent addition to the Filipino cuisine scene here in Florida. Will definitely stop by here again whenever I decide to drive up to Jacksonville or pass by the area again. For my initial review, giving TBS four out of five stars. Everything is excellent, but I must save the fifth star for consistency. If I return (more than once) and TBS is just as amazing as my initial visit, will definitely give TBS their fifth star. read more

I've been to a Valerio's in Southern California that was smaller. This location really makes use of their small space, and there's so much variety! From sweet options like cookies and sweet breads to savory choices like siopao and pansit palabok, The Baker's Son has a wonderful selection of Filipino treats, which makes it a great one-stop shop if you want a variety of things. I like how bright and modern the decor is. The light bulb chandelier caught my attention right away. There were some stacked boxes and baskets stored by the waiting area for drinks, but I imagine they're there because the lack of room in the back area. We got chocolate chip cookies, puto, sapin sapin, an ensaymada, and a Biscoff cookie butter milkshake. Everything was fresh and tasted delicious! My brother had been to this location before and said their drinks are 5-stars every time. Next time I visit, I'd like to try their siopao and fried musubi balls, which I've never seen before (comes with a soy sauce dropper). read more

Mind you, I live in Atlanta, but after seeing a post of this bakery on IG, my daughter and I decided to do a foodie trip to J'ville for a last minute weekend getaway. I like where this location is located because it was easy to get to via GPS and plenty of parking spaces. Parking lot is lit and good foot traffic. We got there middle of the day and it was crowded. I was surprised at how small this bakery was and was kind of confused as to how the line started and ended or if we order the drink first or what not. A customer there told us that we order when we're in line. It was kind of hard to look at all the bakeries with the line all up on near the shelves, but we did it. We love how there were so many varieties of bakeries and treats. I spent over $100 just on bakeries and drinks, brought it back to Atlanta and to this day, it's still good. Everything is good, but now, I regret that I didn't get more of their ube croissants and ube crinkle cookies. Can't wait to go back one day. The Baker's Son has quickly become one of my favorite bakeries in Jax! We've picked up items from here a couple times and everything we're tried has been fantastic! The ube selection is unmatched! Bread and rolls and cakes and shakes, oh my! You can't go wrong with any of these but I recommend the pan de ube. Try them warm and crispy right off the skillet! The ensaymadas are delicious, the classic cheese is my favorite. Some of my other go-to's are the ham & cheese buns, custard egg pie, chicken empanada, beef empanada and adobo pan de sal. OK, I have to say I'm spoiled coming from the center of San Diego CA's Filipino community in National City. You really get spoiled there because you find a monster Filipino food shopping center called Seafood City - an incredible place, as you know, if you've ever been there (and don't forget Goldilocks too!). BUT this is JAX! And I've discovered that Filipino/Asian speciality shops seem to be much smaller. But that's all right too! Because The Baker's Son By Valeryio's is amazing in every way. It's small but makes great use of every square inch of space in the bakery. The shelves are tight and tall and filled with bakery treats that I often can't even say their name, or how they taste till it try! But my fave here is the coffee roll! It's on the top shelf left in one of the refrigerators! And next to it is the red velvet cake - it's coming next for me! The coffee roll here is superb, tasty (yes, you can taste the coffee more than the sugar), and terrific with a coffee beverage too! I recently tried what seemed to be an experiment offering called "fried spam musubi balls." You can see from one of my photos that there is what appears to be a soy "syringe" placed in it to inject the soy(?) with the spam inside it. Well, I had not seen this before and it was every bit worth the try! It was creative and delicious! If you are not familiar with Filipino baked treats, I recommend you try the sampler. It's noticeable on the shelves and it will help you target what you like the next time you come in. On a side note, you most likely will find the shop crowded when you come it. So be patient! It's worth the wait. Also, don't be afraid to try their coffee beverages. They have smoothies as well. I tried a hot white chocolate mocha with two pumps of syrup (I asked for them to lower the amount from what they normally put in) and I was wowed again! I know what to order when it comes to lattes anytime I go in now. The service here is solid. it's busy all the time and the employees are continually making something great for us! We arrived at The Bakers So on a Saturday during one of the most difficult travel weeks of this year. The last time we were here, I had the unfortunate experience of being shorted a pastry from the pastry case. By the time I opened up the bag, I realized that the Carioca that I had was looking forward to was never packed and was already 6 hours away. Thus on this Saturday, I was on a mission to enjoy some baked goods and Filipino drinks and not be shafted. I'm afraid that despite my wishful thinking, the experience was a bit lackluster. The location is ruffled with baked goods galore - but for some reason in the front prepared warm foods case they had spam musubi. I've loved spam musubi since I was a young girl in Las Vegas. I've had this delicasee in all parts of Hawaii. What I had last Saturday was a rush job of spam musubi. It was a thin slice of spam hanging onto the barely noticeable seaweed wrap and coated with the rawest portion of uncooked rice my mouth had never tasted. I've cooked rice for a long time, but I've never been within 5 feet of a person from Asia who has served raw rice. I'm not sure what happened today with their rice cooker, but somehow - a tray of raw rice was served to the general public. (I hope the next person has dental insurance). As we slowly collected the baked goods from different racks and shelves, we walked up to the cashier and ordered two pastries from the case and two drinks. Because they "forget" to grab anything anything you order from the case, I had to remind the cashier of what we still needed. She grabbed it and looked at me as if asking someone to do their job was a crime. We waited almost 15 minutes for our two drinks (ube shake and sago/gulaman). Whenever I go to visit a Filipino venue, I have expectations that I will not need to check anything. Well, let's just say that if you order something from TBS, please spend an extra 1-5 minutes checking your order. My sago/gulaman was only gulaman/gulaman and their staff didn't bother to tell me otherwise. I'm disappointed- i always want to give people the benefit of the doubt but they are too busy to care it seems. read more

Pretty decent place for some Filipino pastries and goodies. The best things in my opinion are the following: Ube coffee cake: definitely one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. The coffee cake is moist and rich, you can taste the ube flavor, and the crumble and ube icing on top is chef's kiss. The coffee cake is so moist the it falls apart in your hands (in a good way). I love having it with a glass of milk! I find myself eating multiple slices at a time. The chicken adobo and pork adobo siopaos (filled buns) are delicious and the flavors blend together quite nicely and is authentic. Being married to a Filipino and having those dishes from his mother and grandmother, I can say that the flavors are pretty spot on. The sisig siopao is okay and you can taste the pork and calamansi's tartness in it but it's honestly better in the sizzling plate form. The Buko pandan drink is really good, milky, not too sweet, and has the distinct flavor of pandan leaves with some toppings included like jellies and tapioca. My favorite is the calamansi juice. The juice is refreshing and reminds me of a freshly squeezed lime/orange combination. I highly recommend the juice and the pandan drink. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is that the customer service is quite horrible at times. The workers are young and I catch them copping an attitude with me about a few times I've been there. One time, I mistakenly went up to order a drink thinking there was a register just for drinks and the girl rudely told me that there was a line and for me to get in the line. It was an honest mistake and I apologized twice, but she gave me the rudest smirk. I've worked in customer service and I understand that it's not an easy field but at least try to be respectful and polite, especially when the customer is being friendly. But they also have some unique creations like a macapuno pandan tart. The bakery also sells savory items like pork/chicken adobo pandesal which is delicious. Oh my goodness! I was very excited to try this bakery out. The workers were busy working behind the counter to restock items, not anyone available to ask questions too. Seemed disturbed when wanting to check out. BUT I'll let that go for these pan de ube as they were FANTASTIC!! Their pandesal DELICIOUS!! I also got the Dubai croissant and it was so great.
