I don't think it is possible for Leigh Jones to use her midas-touch on a bar or restaurant and not have me think that it is the bees knees. The Bar Car is no exception to this rule. Nestled amongst the tightly packed businesses on the west side of Colorado Boulevard near 8th, you will find this jewel. Parking is tight and the interior of this place is even tighter. Good service and a nice beer list can be found within. I was greatly saddened that they ran out of ginger beer and could not make me a Moscow Mule. (yes, that was my first world tragedy of the day ). Went to the Bar Car the other day for the first time. I've been to most of the spots around my area, but the Bar Car was refreshing. The awesome bartender Meegz was on point with service and making sure everyone was ok from masks to making sure no one had too much and had a way home at the end of the night. It's nice to go somewhere and see that they treat everyone equally and make sure everyone is ok! Definite new spot. read more

I don't make it around to here nearly enough, but Bar Car is a solid little bar perfect for hanging with friends and drinking some delicious cocktails. I love the red and wood decor of this cool long bar. It's set up well for small groups and couples. Of course the only downside of a small bar, is that when it's crowded, it's packed. They have really solid drinks here. I love any place that does Moscow mules, and Bar Car has a good one. They also have solid beers on tap including some Goose Island beers that provide fond memories of college years in Illinois. They also have great service here and pizza from Denver Deep Dish to boot. read more

What the hell is this place doing on Colorado Boulevard? While everything else on Colorado Boulevard looks like it came in an Ikea box, complete with aggressive suburban drivers and houses made of ticky tacky, this place is like the outcast kid's fort. This is the perfect place to start out your night. The prices are absolutely reasonable, it isn't too crowded on a Saturday night, and the atmosphere is perfect to coax the last reluctant members of your party to slide into party zone. (This person is usually me, always holding out hope that someone will suggest going home to watch The Wire or play Uno instead.) It's swankily lit, with a sort of high-brow lounge feel- it's a spot-on hipster vibe, but that's only because the hipsters have so masterfully reclaimed the 20's aesthetic of low, warm lights, mounted game, retro posters and lush colors. It's a place where you could get away wearing either overalls or straight-up Opening Night at the Opera garb, and the folks in there are laid back enough to let your friend choose "Dancing in the Dark" by Lady Gaga on the jukebox and not glower. Plus, of course, Jonesy's fries, the dankest of the dank. (BUT GUYS! Add the mac and cheese fries to this menu! You're killin' me, smalls!) There are still some bugs going on here- they were out of a bunch of things on the menu, the bartender accidentally charged someone else's card for our order, and frankly, the seating along the back wall is tricky if you have more than 2 people in your group. But overall, this is the place to hit if you're lost in Cherry Creek/Glendale ballocks and need a hideout. read more

This is a cool little new bar where the recovery room used to be. It makes me think I could be sitting in a retro cool grandparents living room, or in a train car. The bar is long and skinny but it works and is decorated with lots of taxidermy and old fashioned paintings - sounds strange but it all comes together. They have good beer options there at reasonable prices. I'd like to go back once they have more food options as I understand they are working on that. From what I heard about Recovery Room, this place has improved by leaps and bounds so kudos to the owners for their work on the place! read more

This bar is right in my neighborhood and I walk past it daily on my way to work. One night, after some bad news and needing to cheer up my roommate, we went over to check it out. I'm very glad we did! Don't let the exterior fool you. Inside is cozy and friendly. The staff is cheerful and welcoming, and the pizza served there (Denver Deep Dish) is out of this world! My gf and I went in here yesterday an boy did it not disappoint. We have lived in the neighborhood over a year, but still never poked our head in until yesterday. Their cocktails are amazing. They have their own pickle vodka that they use for bloody Mary's which rocked! Also, their margaritas are delicious. I ended up eating some of their bbq which was pretty good for a bar, the pulled pork was my favorite. My gf got the tacos and she was not disappointed. Our bartender, Victor, was attentive and quick. I am a fan and I think it will only get better at Bar Car. There is a kitchen coming soon and rumor is they will do bar type food: fries (like jonesys), wings, sliders, etc. Amazing how different this space is when it was Recovery Room just weeks back. Every since Office Hours here last month, I've been dreaming of coming back to the Bar Car for another visit. Although I haven't ever been in a real bar car on a train, I have been on many trains. Welllllll I ordered a single tall vodka soda with a lemon and got a short vodka soda with a lime. Not a huge deal but I wouldn't describe the bartender as a "good listener". The atmosphere is nice and cozy, maybe a cool place to get a drink or 50 in a snowstorm. I was here in the middle of the day, kind of a raging-alcoholic-paying-with-change type of vibe but I don't mind that, people minding their business, enjoying some fine beverages. I've driven by this place plenty of times and have always meant to stop by. It's a smaller place but when you walk in the decor immediately sets the mood. I love the theme and the lighting (dim with darker walls that made the place seem both old timey and cozy). The drinks were not too expensive and they do you host karaoke nights. The staff was really friendly and service was good. There's a small parking lot for a few the businesses in that area but That tends to fill up pretty fast. There's plenty of street parking nearby in the residential neighborhoods though. They have a very small outdoor area but the inside of the bar really is the main drive. The Bar "Chug-a Chug-a Chew Chew" Car is great. Its pretty tiny but we were able to get seats and didn't feel pressured to move on at all. The bar tenders, or should I call them conductors to keep with the train theme, were all very cool. If one didn't know something he/she would ask one of the other people working and wasn't snooty or annoyed at all. I had a great time watching college football and chatting with fellow patrons. One big plus, well maybe not actually a big plus, but a plus all the same, you can get a drink made with tang. Really, pretend your an Apollo astronaut and slam a pretty decent shot with the orange stuff that helped America's finest have the right stuff. Looks like they have live music sometimes, which would be great in such a tiny place and I have heard the food is pretty darn tasty as well. Worth a try for sure if you are in the area. read more

This isn't the biggest bar in the world, but that's what makes the atmosphere special at the Bar Car. Two more bonus points for free Wi-Fi and Denver Deep Dish being served in the back. This place has old school tin ceiling that has been colored bronze, which adds to the atmosphere more than anything in my opinion. Bartenders are friendly and johnny on the spot with your refill, and they have TVs at either end of the bar if you just want to drink your beer in peace. The location is very unique, I'm unaware of any non-chain, hole-in-the-wall bars anywhere close to this place (northwest corner of 8th and Colorado,next to the Starbucks). The parking situation isn't that bad, just go one block west into the neighborhood and park on the street there. read more

AHHH! How did I find this place just weeks before I am moving out of the neighborhood!! Perfect neighborhood bar, a little divey in atmosphere, a great laid back place where the bar tenders whip up delicious drinks, have terrific craft beer on tap, and excellent service. For example..... After enjoying a Agave Wheat at the bar I noticed they had a container of tang sitting along side the liquor. Curiosity got the better of me so I flagged down a cute and friendly bar tender and asked what he made with tang. We went for cocktails on Saturday early evening... a great combination of neighborhood folks and some people walking in off the street. They have a terrific juke box, will turn the volume up or down as you wish which to me is always been a plus! No one wants to yell at their friends across a table. The decor is fantastic and will take you to a different time or place and is a great addition to the neighborhood and a certain upgrade from the Recovery Room (the previous tenant). No kitchen service yet but the bar tender made us an amazing cheese plate with cheese, roasted peppers, roasted eggplant and artichokes... all for ten dollars. Cocktails are top shelf, beers on tap are from the Breckenridge Brewery for the most part and the service is above the board! read more

Simply giving this review so nobody else wastes their time here. Ended up coming in with some friends because I heard I should try it. Ordered cheese curds to start which were super good but the portion seemed a little small for 9 bucks. I ordered the chicken plate with Mac n cheese. The chicken was super dry and cold. The code slaw was literally just sliced cabbage and vinegar. That's it. The Mac n cheese was a solid 6/10. Creamy and cheesy but tasted super generic. Not to mention our server/ the bartender was super wasted and forgot to bring out the nachos that we ordered for our food. We ended up just paying and leaving. Good service, awesome beer, but the any dish with cheese there tastes completely off. I've been in and had queso and chips before, and they had some weird seasoning in it that kind of gave it a metallic taste. The time before that I ordered Mac & cheese from there for pick up and it had the same strange taste. I love the Bar Car. I really do. It's so tiny, yet full of energy. Like my last girlfriend. Oh, and there is great beer too because what's a bar without beer, right? It's in kind of a weird location, right on the main Colorado Blvd drag, but if you can get past that, there is plenty of parking, great (bar) food and a feeling like someone would yell out "Norm!" when you walk in the door. Did not care for their deep dish pizza at all. There was hardly any cheese and tasted old. Maybe it was because I got a slice insteD of a whole pie, but still. Ambience was meh. They were playing dawn of the dead on their TVs, and as a person who can't tolerate gross horror movies, I thought this was in poor taste. The atmosphere is conducive to everything from shooting the breeze with whoever is nearby to having a chill first date. The bartenders are friendly and attentive, while the drinks are pretty reasonable. The beer selection isn't huge, but is decent. I like that they always have two Goose Island brews on tap. And to top it off, they have a delicious pizza joint in the back (Denver Deep Dish). This is a great little bar. It's great because of a combination of things: Great taps. Oskar Blues, Left Hand & Dry Dock. That's a badass beer list. I had the Dry Dock Ipa and Left Hand's Milk Stout. Made my first trip to The Bar Car after reading good things around the Yelp/Twitter/Foursquare worlds for a while. It is a bit out of my way, but it was perfect to meet a friend in between Cap Hill and Lowry on a weekday evening. Super nice staff, good beer at a reasonable price, and a fun atmosphere. If I'm in the hood and need a cold beverage, I will certainly return. And, as a bonus, good Chicago style pizza inside via an association with Denver Deep Dish. read more

Not sure how this place gets good reviews with food like this. The coleslaw tastes like it was made a week ago. The macaroni is bland. The fries I got tastes like they were made yesterday. Car Bar is a solid 4 stars. It's the perfect neighborhood bar. It's got not-too-pricey drinks. It's got a decent crowd of locals and fun staff. If I lived nearby, I would be here all the time. Luckily I have friends that live nearby so I have been here a few times. The food is actually good! Some of my friends even say it's the best burger in their hood. I had a corn dog.
