Stopped in here the other night with a few other Yelpers. First off, great food, great service, and a great atmosphere. I'm anxious to bring my wife for a meal sometime soon. The pepperoni, pineapple and jalapeno was stellar, as was the goat cheese and bacon pie. I loved both crust options and am anxious to try them both again, but I think the dish crust was my favorite. The bar Car is a great little bar that has a friendly locals vibe. When my wife and I moved to the neighborhood about a year and some ago we found this place and fell in love. We have another bar about a block from our house but we will walk the extra half mile to go to the Bar Car. They have great drinks and great food. This place took over the spot where the ol' Recovery Room was. The RR was known as a hipster/hobo bar where the owners parties with the patrons. Made for an interesting night but the RR was more on the dirty side. The Bar Car has cleaned things up a bit but it's still a dark neighborhood bar. Gone are the riff raff from Colfax that would wonder in and serve up a warm cup of halitosis in your face as you're drinking a beverage. Enter booths, a cozy new interior that has a garage sale feel to it, and friendly / professional bartenders. The place works for me because it's not a rowdy as some of the other neighborhood bars in that area and you get a more personalized service. My old wish is that they publish the drink specials for the night somewhere or have a viable menu showing what's on tap so I don't have to ask the bartender 10 times for that info. They've also added a few TVs to the mix so I'm sure you can watch some good football, hockey, or baseball up in this joint. We had five drinks there and our tab was $27 bones with tip. Not bad but we'd just come from the Park Tavern where four drinks were $12 bucks with tip during late night happy hour. Overall, still a decent joint to visit if you want something more personal and divey. read more

Great service and great drinks. I am so glad that I found this bar and I am thrilled that it is within walking distance from my apartment! The bartender was friendly and made a great margarita. I will definitely be back. They had that beer and shot special that my boyfriend liked a lot. A pizza company operates out of the back of their kitchen now. We had these meatballs wrapped in a biscuit dough that were really good. I am excited to try their pizza next time we come. I haven't found real Chicago pizza in Denver, but this is really close. So we walked into the bar and weren't greeted or even acknowledged for over 10 min. The bartender tended to tables behind us, cleared glasses off the table behind us and still never acknowledged our presence. Then right after she got our order a table sat behind us, and she almost immediately greeted them and took their drink order. I get it, she's one person, but not even greeting a table for over 10 min is a problem. Food was ok. I had the pulled chicken and it was a bit dry. My husband had the pulled pork and it was pretty tasty. Ps. Once we were finally served service was much better. read more

Pretty sure our bartender was the owner guy that others complained about in previous reviews. He doesn't smile BUT he's patient, knowledgeable, and fast. It's a trade-off. I kinda like efficient over effervescent. The main reason for not giving 5 stars is because it is a divey bar and just not a 5-star place. Otherwise, decent bar food, decent drink menu, decent prices. We were there on a Monday and there were bar games with prizes (bingo and trivia) run by a very sweet ole dude. The patrons were outgoing. It was a neighborhood joint atmosphere. I would go back. It's worth a hangout if you're looking for that. read more

Great vibe, great bartender, affordable drinks, and I enjoyed the customers that came in! I've been there twice since I got to Denver, and thurs far it's one of my favorite bars. The bartender had some strawberries and home made whipped cream that he was giving out to free to the customers. Noise level was medium to low, even during Happy Hour. This bar is great, with a great happy hour. It is set up like an old bar car on a train, hence the name. The bar tenders are friendly and want to make you feel at home. Last time I was there the bartender brought us and the other customers strawberries and homemade whipped cream, yum. He even gave my boyfriend a whiskey shirt from an old promotion. So I admit that I'm one of those people who just is never happy wherever I go generally. When climbing a mountain I can't wait to get to the top, then when on top, I just want to get back down. When in Chicago all I wanted was a Tommy Knocker or a Blue Moon but I was stuck with 312 as the only craft beer basically available. So when I saw that The Bar Car had 312 on tap, well, I was drawn there like a moth to a flame. I was super happy with the experience. The room is very small and I like that, a typical Denver Square. You can fill it with 50 people. The ambiance is rad. I had heard an urban legend that it was supposed to be like going into the bar car on a train, but it felt much more like a great neighborhood bar out of the 1920s-1940s. So lets dive into my typical breakdown. The Good: The pizza is fantastic! I once worked for an Old Chicago part time for a few months so that I could learn some pizza making secrets. This pizza makes Old Chicago's best pizza look like crap. The crust was amazing and crisp. Perfectly buttery. The marinara was fantastic also. Perhaps the best pizza in Denver. The Owners introduced themselves to us and were super friendly. A nice touch. The Bad: The menu is simple and the kitchen is small. If you want fantastic hand crafted food you better not come in during a rush, it could take awhile. The bartender did screw up my drink order, but he was getting the first wave of his nightly rush, so I understand. The Ugly: I never went into the bathrooms, but they looked scarey. Also the parking lot sucks. But aside from that, I got no complaints. Overall: Great little bar, it will make my top five Denver bars no problem. read more

Went here last night, they were out of pizza by midnight which made us sad as we were getting the midnight drinking munchies and wanted some food. Sad to find out the kitchen closed at midnight, especially with my friend from chicago in town. However the owner heard us pouting about the kitchen being closed and found three slices for us. That was awesome! Wish they had a late night midnight to 1am menu to get some quick bites but happy to live just a block away and get such great service. Thanks guys! read more

One of my favorite pizza and Moscow Mule places in Denver! This bar is a bar-- it's decorated to look like a train bar car. Get it? So it's a little cramped, a lot kitschy, and has quite a bit of character. There are regulars drinking and people who wander in after an exhausting trip through Trader Joes. The bartenders/wait staff are helpful and pour good, strong drinks. The pizza here is only served certain hours-- and the ones listed online may or may not be accurate. Be ware! The pizza is a thick, cakey deep dish with plentiful toppings and a healthy serving of grease. If you wanted health food, there are other places to go but here. They pour a mighty fine Moscow mule and have good beers available too. The beauty of this place is its simplicity-- not too many options of food, but the options of drinks are great. My favorite local bar! Great fun service and cheap drinks! I love this place for just a quick stop or to hang out for the night. The crowd is so friendly, talkative, interactive, and a little wild. When I checked in I was so hungry that I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and didn't realize that I forgot to check in to Denver Deep Dish too. This is what happens when I am starving, my brain stops working temporarily. Thankfully Jeff S did check in to DDD and we got hooked up by Yelp! with a 15% off our check coupon thing. I liked this place. We were able to grab a table right when we walked in which was great considering it was Friday night and it was packed! Our waitress came over (for the life of me I can't remember her name, but she had the coolest tattoo on her arm) and took our drink orders. She was great all night. On top of everything, checking in on us at just the right time, extremely engaging, and not overbearing or rude. They have a decent selection of beers on tap and your standard fares in bottles.Plus I think they were either still having happy hour or had a really great deal on the tap beer. I just remember the waitress telling me that it was cheaper to keep ordering beer on tap instead of switching to a bottle. We perused the menu and started with the Mile High Meatballs and then ordered a thin crust pizza with sausage, bacon & green peppers. The meatballs were so good and flavorful I couldn't stand my self. They came out steaming hot and were the perfect start to the meal. Then out came the pizza and I was even more impressed. I often forget about the thin crust pizza and forgot how crisp it can be. The sausage had a great flavor and you could totally taste the smokey flavor in the bacon. The green peppers were sauteed lightly and still had some crunch to them. It was like a flavor explosion party in my mouth and I could not stop eating. Considering the location, parking isn't too bad. You can park on the street if you are lucky, and there are some smaller parking lots around that you can park in as well. I will definitely be adding this to my list of awesome bars & pizza joints. I can't wait to go back! read more

Went there tonight and straight away was accosted by some guy demanding ID. So being 42 years of age, and thinking "ohhh, isn't that sweet" - I pul out my Australian drivers licence & present to the accostee. The dude tells me that my ID isn't acceptable!? I double check with the manager and same deal!!!??? They basically tell me to "bugger off"! Getting home and jumping on the colorado.gov website to check the laws surrounding ID requirements, this is what is stated for the state of Colorado: - Excerpt from the Colorado Department of Revenue Liquor Enforcement Division Licensee Handbook .... A. Do Patrons have to produce identification, and what kinds of identification can I accept? Colorado law does not require a patron to produce identification when making a purchase of alcohol beverages. -- snip -- Licensees should always check for acceptable proof of age if there is any doubt about the age of the patron. -- cough -- If an acceptable proof of age is not available from the questionable patron, no service or sale should be provided. Only the following types of identification may be relied upon by Licensees as proof of age of a patron. Note that each identification listed must be valid (not expired), have a photograph and description of the bearer: 1. An operator's, chauffeur's or similar type driver's license issued by any state within the United States, any U.S. territory, or any foreign country including Canada or Mexico. ..."or any foreign country" - enough said. The Bar Car is great neighborhood bar with awesome bartenders. They always seem to remember me, even the times when I try to be anonymous. The ambiance is warm and club like due to the low lighting and narrow alley-like space. I always to strike a random conversation or be engaged in one. Service is quick and always accommodating. I have been back a few times for happy hour after work. These are some of the coolest bar tenders I've ever met. They literally shake your hand and introduce themselves. They make this place so much fun to drink at. And now they serve burgers and nachos, that are made with tots-not chips! So Good! read more

The Bar Car is a really nice little bar. For a small place they had a great beer selection and I was told by the very friendly bar tender that they rotate out their taps every month or so. Great happy hour prices. I ordered the corn dog and the homemade chips. The corn dog was fine-what can I say it was a corn dog. The chips, eh, not so much. They weren't sliced thin enough so they didn't cook properly. I'm certainly willing to give the food another try and will definitely be back for the excellent service, nice beer selection and great happy hour prices! read more

love this place! it is definitely a cozy neighborhood bar, you can dress casual or dress up and not feel out of place. the crowd there is a trail mix of people; they're all fun and friendly. they just started serving more food now too, definitely get the jonesy's fries, but now they have burgers, wings, corndogs, and more!! of course the staff makes the place, the bartenders are always nice, always helpful, and go out of their way to make sure the customers are satisfied!! how could you turn down a $6 beer and shot (all day, every day) special?! read more

The old Recovery Room has held steady as a hipster haven, complete with Thursday Night Mark Starr karaoke, and I finally checked it out. Not bad at all. Good bartenders, reasonably priced drinks, and a happening scene. I mean, Mark Starr still uses the microphone 3 to 1 to people getting to sing, but that's to be expected from his brand and nothing to do with the bar. We didn't try any of their grub, but the menu looks fun for bar food. I'll be sure to check out the bar staff and this interesting hole in the wall again, just probably not on a karaoke night. read more

I have been to the Bar Car three times now. I think it is a big improvement over the recovery room. The lighting is better, but not too bright. The interior is a lot nicer, yet still comfy and clean. The bathrooms are clean. They have about 7 local good micros on tap. 3$ during HH and 4$ at other times. Plenty of shot and beer specials. Lively crowd on Saturday nights. I am not thrilled about their food menu. It has a little of everything but a lot of it is fried food. I know, it's a bar not a restaurant. Not a sports bar either. Just two TV's. Good Juke box selections. read more
