Has this facility changed ownership/management? I've previously commented favorably about it (see below), but it appears to have changed considerably: 1. Previously when I arrived, the barber college was maxed out (10-15?) student/customer pairs, with people waiting. This time, 2 other customers were in the shop. 2. This time, while I waited for about 10 minutes, 2 students sat around passively. When another customer walked in, he was taken immediately. 3. I previously had competent student-barbers, satisfactory haircuts, and had observed other customer with good, if not meticulous haircuts. 4. This time, had the 24 times my unsupervised student-barber banged my head with his clippers any harder, I would've had a concussion. Worst haircut in my life. read more

Came at opening 10am on Saturday and all barbers were already taken. Super small parking lot in the back with a few spots were also filled. The wait was 35-45min as a walk in. You can also make an appointment but it would be barber specific. Most haircuts average at least 30min to cut from what I observed and mine took 1hr+ which is understandable as these are students. My barber was really easy to work with and the cut turned out 7/10. For $5 before tip, this is well worth it if you have time or luck out on getting a good barber and just making appointments with them in the future. read more

Despite the excellent work by the student-barbers and the unbeatable price, I was very reluctant to return due to the OSHA-level dangerous volume of the music played. They've turned down the volume. If you're into rap and rap-like music, it's there. If you're not, it's not at an irritating, let alone a dangerous level. And the student-barber workmanship remains A-1. I just needed a mop sheared off - my student-barber was very professional and tried hard to make sure that I didn't really want hair -styling; but I saw other student-barbers do excellent hair-styling and moustache and beard-trimming. And in this disastrous economy, being able to spend $5 + tip (if one chooses) on a haircut, rather than $25, can be life-saving to many. read more

Thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake. A lot of talking and boasting and really bad haircuts. There didn't appear to be anyone watching these "students" as they butchered their clients' hair. Mine was bad, the guy next to me got it even worse. I get that it's a school but someone should be telling them when things are going wrong and there was a lot of that. The guy "cutting" my hair took a personal call during the cut. Apparently when one of these students comes or goes, it is necessary to fist bump every single bro. I don't live anywhere near Barber Academy but was very glad that I saw it only because I happened to drive along San Carlos St a year ago. So for the past year, students Elijas, & yesterday, Gustavo, cut my hair. They did excellent job, as good as my regular barber but at 1/3 of the cost!!! After a botched color job (I did the botching), I still had some residual color left and wanted the rest lopped off. My budget right now is really tight and considering how short my hair already was, I looked for a local barber school. For the low, low, practically free price of $5, The Barber Academy is just a short walk away in San Jose. I loved everything about the experience from beginning to end. They take walk-ins Tuesday-Friday from 10a-2p. The gentleman who tended to my hair is Stefan Falcon, kind, a superior listener, with flair. I don't know an "8" cut from a "2" cut and he patiently explained all this, grabbing tools from a garage-like storage unit in black, complete with my favorite part of the process: an air hose! They use this to blow every last tiny hair off your head and even your shoes! I also met the owner sitting in the back who was also friendly and Stefan said how well-liked he is, which is a nice thing to hear about the boss. Women! Don't be afraid, if you have a shorter do, this could be just the ticket without all the fluff and ritual of a salon (which I no longer have any patience to endure). So the price is right, and they do end up with you walking out looking good. But you'll pay in time not money, we are talking 2 1/2 hours to give a basic trim with faded sides, this is what we get every 2 weeks and it should take 1/2 an hour. Also don't expect a professional environment, loud "gangster " rap music and the students just sitting around bsing, ignoring clients who walk in until they feel like breaking up their conversation to greet them. Today I went and Abel help one of my kids and did AWESOME JOB and charge me $5 dlls BUT the girl (today was wearing a adidas hat) I don't know her name did a awful haircut to my other kid and she charge me $10 dlls !! Please be mindful that this is a students review. For anyone looking for a haircut or shave, please be patient and the students cause they are LEARNING! You can always ask for an experienced student. About a year ago I decided to jump on the opportunity of becoming a barber. I looked at a few schools and and even spoke to and met some of the staff in these schools. The Barber Academy is by far the best barber school in the Bay Area. You seriously get you money's worth. For example: one school wanted $24,000 that didn't specialize in barbering. The other wanted $9500 and had an instructor that just watched. If the haircut was bad the instructor would let the student deal with it. The Barber Academy gives you the not only the hands on experience but also gives you full insight to the world of barbering. The instructors are REAL barbers. You see them interact everyday with their clients and are always willing to help and answer questions. No one ever leaves with a bad haircut. Oh and it's cheaper then any other school out there. And it's super flexible. Give it a shot if your an aspiring barber. read more

Worst mistake ever! My usual spot is in San Jose for $7. But since I live in Santa Clara, this academy is closer and cheaper in price. For mens, we usually get our hair cut every 1-2 weeks (2 weeks for me). So finding a closer and cheaper place would be ideal. Now before going in, I had very low expectations for a $5 haircut and being at a barber academy, i knew my barber would probably have little experience. I figure it would be ok, he might take long but as long as he gets it right, and thats where it all went wrong.... I came in and asked for a fade and a trim on top. With my current hair do, it is fairly short to begin with. But it has a very noticable fade and my top is simple with my bangs slightly longer than the back section. I would assume you can clearly tell the top of my head was done with scissors since it doesn't have a ball shape.. First thing he did was bust out the clippers and start from the bangs back. At this point.. I knew i had f*ed up, he cut my bangs! The top of my head is now done by clippers all the same length, i now have a ball head?? I'm not sure at what point did I ask him to change the style of my hair do. My fade is also not really a fade, or at least completely different than what I came in with. But really, i don't blame the barber for any of this. I question what did the school actually teach? How can you possibly send a barber in training to begin to cut hair with real clients, when he is completely clueless? On top of that, you will need really thick skin if you plan to get a mens cut here. All the barbers seem to be trained to use this brush to wipe hair as they're cutting. But they're not told to be careful with brushing the same areas over 50 times with this extremely stiff bristle brush. The first couple times are ok, but eventually it feels like your skin is being shredded off. read more

Had a haircut for the first time here a couple of weeks back. People were nice, the shop was clean, and the haircut was great. The only issue I had was how they take the people from the wait. I was the first one to arrive at the shop but they keep taking the people who got there late; I had to wait for an hour since they keep taking people who were inconsiderate of the wait line. There needs to be a proper system on how they take customers. Other than that, it was a great experience. read more

After searching for a Barber shop to take my nephew too, I finally came across this one. Super glad I did, this is definitely one of the better Barber shops in San Jose. I've taken my nephew here a handful of times to see Jason (Jbird). He is always on time and super accommodating, he makes sure finds the time to fit us in. Every time we walk in we're always greeted by Chris and JD as well as Jason. They are definitely top 3 best barbers in the shop, their chairs are never empty. Which was a good sign for me! The students all seem to be motivated and driven in pursuing in the world of Barber. Never once did I felt like they did not know what they were doing.
