He made sure that I knew everything including making a bobbin, threading the sewing machine, adjusting the speed, backing up,... he told me everything I needed to know to go home and confidently get started on my own.. It was well worth the price, and I also purchased some extra sewing machine needles, bobbins, and thread. What a great shop and great service. My Kenmore 385.16530000 went kaput--in multiple ways. It was sewing backwards! I even tried to roll with it and sew the current project in reverse, but nope. Kaput. I'd had... less-than-stellar experiences at two other repair shops. I'm not there to buy a vacuum or be talked into another machine--I just want the one I brought in fixed. Sure, it might even be cheaper to buy a new one. But this one is mine. And I believe in taking care of the things I own. Especially my mother's "fancy" sewing machine. I'm so glad I found Viking! Seriously--a most excellent experience. What an absolute delight of a human Gordon is. I've got blue hair, all leather and spikes--I can be a bit much. ;) Gordon didn't even bat an eye when I rolled in. He treated me with kindness and respect, and we had lovely conversation. My machine was fixed much faster than I expected--done in under a week! He called when it was ready and kindly held onto it for a few extra days until I could arrange a caretaker for my Yiayia. When I picked it up, he walked me through everything that had gone wrong, and even mentioned he enjoyed sewing with it. That last bit made me feel especially happy. No judgment, no shame, and I walked away with more knowledge/tips than I walked in with. If you are looking for an upgrade, repair, or parts, Viking Sewing Center is the only place I'll go from here on out. My Janome sewing machine was very long overdue for a tune up and had a broken spool holder, and I took my machine in and they were able to give me an estimate within a few days and walked me through what kind of service they'd be doing to repair my machine so I could make an informed decision. While the price was slightly higher than what I had originally been expecting, the fast turnaround time, the great customer service, and the results were most definitely worth every penny. My machine is running smoother than it's run in YEARS. I wish I had brought my machine in to Viking much sooner, but I will certainly not hesitate to bring it to them in the future if/when I run into other issues with my machine. read more

Took my Epic 2 in for service. The tension spring broke and was not advancing the under thread. Also machine needed to be serviced/cleaned. Didn't want to have it shipped to another state if I went thru Viking directly. I've been doing business with Gordon since 2003 when I bought my Designer from him. I brought my old Singer 404 sewing machine (built 1958-1960) in for cleaning and repairs a year ago. When I returned to pick it up, it was in excellent condition and the very experienced owner went over the threading and bobbin procedures with me to ensure I was following correct procedures, and was highly complimentary of the old workhorse sewing machine. A year later when I had some issues due to my inexperience, he very kindly showed me what I was doing incorrectly and let me take a video of him setting up and working the machine. Has a lot of work on his plate but has helped me figure out what is wrong with my machine at least a dozen times. Hint: usually it's me. I'm the problem, it's me. (Hat tip to Taylor Swift). Steve has serviced everything from an entry level machine to my grandmother's 1954 Singer 301a. I've seen them help train a new owner of the fancy embroidery machines with patience and generosity. Sometime last year, I decided that I wanted to get back into sewing after years and years. I have an old Viking that I bought many years ago and needed to have it serviced. I also felt that I wanted to take a refresher sewing class. I did a little searching and settled on a class and service for my machine at VSC in Willow Glen. Fast forward to now, and I (1) have taken a weekend sewing, quilting, and monthly computerized machine classes with Ivy; (2) purchased a new machine that does embroidery(!); (3) redone my office into a sewing room; and (4) purchased new sewing furniture. The sewing classes helped push my sewing to a whole other level. And with each skill I gained, I loved sewing even more. I now sew something every week -- concentrating on apparel -- and am so happy with some of the more custom pieces I have been able to create. I credit Ivy, Gordon, and Steve -- they are great. They are friendly, no pressure, and so helpful in answering any question you may have. read more

I have to say that Viking deserves every one of the five stars that I am giving it. After months of aggravation due to wrong information, my lack of sewing skills and people who just wanted to make a buck off of my lack in sewing skills, I finally found an honest, reliable place to bring my machine. I called and spoke with Gordon, explaining my situation and dropped my machine off the next day. Although they did need to keep it for a few days, Gordon said that when I came to pick it up, he would be happy to take some time to give me a few lessons on what not to do in order to keep it out of his shop. He was true to his word when I picked it up and he not only told me what I shouldn't do, he, also, gave me other little tips that no-one was willing to share with me unless I bought my machine from them. It was obvious that he sincerely was there to help and that he enjoys what he does. After getting home, my machine works perfectly and I will definitely be going to Viking for all of my sewing needs. read more

I just had my machine serviced and repaired at Viking Sewing Center. Gordon is a gem. Because I'm on a limited budget, I had to call around to price compare service for my Husqvarna Viking Opal 650. I will tell you that you can service your machines for a little less in the Bay Area, but you get what you pay for. After neglecting her and not servicing her for a couple years, my machine started jamming and throwing errors. This happened on a Saturday, and most shops are shut Saturday through Monday. Viking was open on Monday, though, so I drove down and brought her in. In truth, I had to call back on that Friday to inquire about the status of the machine as I hadn't received a call from the shop. I think they are busy with the pandemic and everyone pulling their sewing machines out of storage to make masks. Gordon told me it would probably be done the next afternoon, and sure enough he called me late morning the next day to tell me my machine was done. He repaired my damage as part of annual maintenance, which is a huge part of why I was able to keep the machine with him for repair. He was also very forgiving with me when I needed to coordinate before he started repairing (I needed to be sure I had the money) and was flexible about taking payment by phone (my MIL helped me with the cost). I've had the machine home for a couple days and have been sewing away, and everything is perfect. My stitch tension or something must have been off, because now my stitches look perfect! Before the Viking Sew Center, I didn't have any sewing experience using a machine whatsoever. Hand sewing on a button or two, or fixing minor rips or tears was the most I could do. For as far as I could remember, I've always been curious about sewing. My grandma used to sew clothes for me and my siblings when we were kids. Well, I decided it was time. I had been looking for sewing classes on and off for almost a year and and finally decided on this place. For one thing, I couldn't find any other place that beat the student teacher ratio which is 1 instructor per a max of 6 students. I called and spoke with Gordon who was super friendly. He kindly took the time to explain to me what I would learn here and how the classes work. The best part? I liked the idea that they don't offer just specific classes for making particular things. ( for example at joann fabric you take one class to make a pillow case, or one class to make another piece of garment, and so on ). I learned that with these classes you work on any project you desire. Cool! Here as a beginner, everyone will start off learning sewing basics with making a tote. From there on you can work on any project you'd like. Upon signing up, you'll take a two part class thats two Sundays a month. Ivy the instructor is extremely skilled, knowledgable, and sweet. She is personable and also super patient which is very important to me as a beginner without any experience. She makes you feel comfortable and confident in using these intimidating machines. I was worried she would get annoyed with the questions I continue to ask but she loves to teach and share what she knows. I'm excited that at the end of my first two part class I finished up my very first tote. Its amazing what I've learned so far and can't wait to learn so much more. Hopefully one day soon I will have my very own sewing machine! I'm already signed up for the next class, and my next project will be PJ pants for my kids. Thanks Ivy!!! His response got me to return to the store (while they were open) and he was very helpful even though I wasn't making a purchase that day. The store is clean and well organized. The hours do appear to have been updated on yelp now as well. This appears to be the kind of neighborhood small business I really like, so I didn't want to leave my negative review hanging out there when it was clearly a fluke and not generally deserved. read more

Highly recommend to get a written estimate for repairs with full details before allowing this company to repair your sewing machine. I was given a verbal quote that it would cost $130 to repair my machine, and the price was to include the replacement part, however, I was shocked that an additional $45 was added upon pickup of my machine. The repair is only warranted for 30 days, so be aware. My machine was skipping stitches during the warranty period, so I had to return to get the timing adjusted as it seems they didn't do a thorough job the first time. Gordon indicated that he would be the person to repair my machine, so I agreed to the repair, however, found out that Steve did the repair instead. Lesson learned, to get more than one estimate. read more

I recently took my embroidery machine in for repair, they were quick and very professional . The repair charge was very reasonable but when I went back in to pick up my machine I started asking questions about the new embroidery machines with the very knowledgable owner . There was no pressure at all but I did end up purchasing a new machine , and signed up for a free class that came with the purchase. They have many great machines and accessories ready for purchase. My Viking 1050 hadn't worked well for several years after getting it serviced at a different local shop. Recently I had 13 hula skirts to make in a hurry. I told my story to the Viking Center and they had my machine tuned up in 1 day (not the 2-3 days they originally stated). I was so glad to get it in a hurry and then tested it for several hours of sewing on the hula skirts. They even carried my very heavy machine out to my car for me :-) That was an unexpected kindness. Went to take in my serger because I couldn't get it to work properly and then, saw a metal piece snap off from inside. Brought it to Viking to fix'er up. What I ended up getting was a great mini-education on my machine and her suggestion that my machine didn't appear to be broken. She sent me on my way with specific instructions to test the machine myself (super helpful since i really don't know what i'm doing at all). If I still couldn't figure it out, she said to bring it back but she didn't want me to spend the money for a full repair/tune up if it was a simple user-error situation. VERY APPRECIATIVE for her direct, friendly and considerate approach to my new business. I'll be bringing all my sewing machine issues to them from here out. read more

This guy tried to charge me $120 for a machine he didn't even fix. He didn't even mention by the way that the tension wheel doesn't even work. What a joke of a place. I even asked him the old man I guess the owner, if it was worth fixing this machine or if it was a hunk of crap and of course he would never turn down business and told me yeah it's a good machine.
