Cut's Not to Like? I needed an "emergency" haircut because I had an apt for a passport application, and my normal barber was AWOL the day before. I was working in the area and decided to give them a chance since they were basically my last option. Yelp states, "By Appointment Only," but when I called, they said I could try and do a walk-in at lunchtime. I arrived a little after noon and was quickly seated and shorn like the sheep I am. The Good: *Haircut ($20) was very not bad, but I'm pretty easy. Just a simple fade and beard trim (pricing arbitrary depending on how fancy). *Barbers were all friendly from what I could tell. *Cash or Venmo only (although there's an added fee with Venmo) *Highly recommend making an apt. They seem like they're very busy all the time. Lots of phone calls coming in whilst I was there of other clients making apts. While I did manage a walk-in without a hitch, I might've also just gotten lucky. *Plenty of parking is available in the area, but try and avoid the area directly in front of the barbershop. Serious clusterfuck. The Meh: *Pricing isn't very clear. They have a sign board with pricing, but it seemed pretty arbitrary. I ended up paying $27 for a haircut and beard trim, which is a little more than I usually pay. *Sign, sign, everywhere a sign... The entire store is plastered with all kinds of signs, saying all kinds of things from extra fees for same day apts to their covid policy and everything in-between. *Two TVs on with two different channels playing and with all the other noise in the shop it was a literal cacophony of noise. This must be that "wall of sound" Phil Spector talked about... 0_o The Ugly: *Neighborhood is one of the most ghettolicious in SJ. So be prepared for anything, esp when the local crackhead bursts in and starts shouting and licking his lips in a sexual manner. -_- TLDR: Good option if you live in the area, but tbh I've had cheaper and better haircuts elsewhere. I left this place after showing up for an appointment I had confirmed many hours before it took place. I won't mention any names as I am sure they know who they are. I had sat and waited, making every effort to show up early having left work early, as I always do. When it was my turn (and believing rightfully so after calling and confirming my appointment time) I get this mean mug from this customer almost as if to say "yeah right it's my turn" as I stand up to take a seat. It's a full house and it's obvious, I thought it weird but I wasn't going to cause a scene again given it was my appointment time. The Barber walks over almost hastily and attempting to be discreet and says "yeah, I thought your appointment was for x time, buddy, sorry". I explained that I called and confirmed with said barber the time, but I was king going to make a scene. The barber even asked if I could comeback an hour later! That's wild, Shocking, I had been coming to this place for close to three years at this point. Some may say this decision was rash BUT when you build barber-client rapport and then you pull this number, it's awkward and uncomfortable from then on. I would have appreciated this barber take a different approach, maybe a free or half off cut? Or an honest apology, instead I got a half texted apology days later. Been going here for some time and I'm a fan of this place. For $15 it's hard to get a good cut nowadays. However, Janice and Calvin are excellent at cutting hair and giving fades. Don't let the fact that this shop is pretty small and tucked away in a corner of the plaza fool you--they know their stuff and have been cutting hair for a long time. A lot of the existing reviews speak to the quality of their service. The only issue I have is with their scheduling system. You need to call in the morning of the day that you'll go to get a time, otherwise you'll find that all the times are booked. Also, make sure that you're not late otherwise you'll be marked out. Be smart call and make an appointment they do allow walk ins from opening till 11am. Calvin, Janice , Rose and Nick are all superb at what they do friendly cool people. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my hair and everybody at this barbershop is pretty legit. This place does tend to get crowded on a Friday and the weekends so call ahead the earlier the better. Leave your bay-bay kids at home as it isn't a day care. Mt.Pleasant barbers is a cash only place so don't don't come in with your funky Visa card come prepared. Janice has been cutting my Son's hair for almost a year now and she is great! When she started working on him he was 3 and haircuts were not the most enjoyable thing! Now he is a champ. Sits with her and enjoys coming to see her. They get busy all the time and it's no wonder why! They are located in a busy area and the cuts are CASH ONLY but very affordable for the amazing job they do! First things first, you NEED to call and make an appointment in the morning before heading over or else you would wait potentially a couple hours until you get a haircut. The regular cutters are Rose, Calvin and Janice. All 3 are really good. They're pretty fast (15min). If you want to have your barber take more time in your cut, I would say go somewhere else. I usually get a lineup, bald taper sides and trim the top which runs me $15 with no tip. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a good haircut. I've been going to this barber shop for a while now, and I think it's safe to say that it's earned its spot as my regular go-to place. This place is very popular so most of the days, you're going to need to call ahead and book an appointment. Very rarely do they have an open slot for a walk in. But if you're lucky, a patron may have finished early or is running late, so they could squeeze you in. The staff is very friendly and personable. On my very first visit, I received a haircut from Calvin. Right off the bat, he was shooting the breeze and made me feel very at ease. The entire staff is warm like that, and they even go so far as to remember you for the next time you're looking for a cut, they even remember what you got last time and will ask you if you still want the same cut. As for the actual haircuts, they know their stuff. If you really know what you want, they'll follow your directions to the letter. On the other hand, if you're still wavering on what haircut you want, feel free to ask them their opinions. The first time I went to this establishment, I was at a crossroads with my hair and wasn't sure what style I wanted. With the help of Calvin and Stella, I now regularly get a 2 to 0 high taper on the sides with no line up (they explained to me how the haircut will work with my head shape and my hair line). One of the best deals around if you want a fresh looking haircut. The first 2-3 hours is only by walk in then they start taking appointments which I highly recommend also Calvin does all appointments on Friday! But you need to call early if not you miss you shot at a hair cut. A hair cut runs you about $15 and if you want to get shaved and everything it's about $25 but when you call let them know. Have recently just been going here this last year and I think I found my go to spot for a clean cut. Rose, my barber, is extremely good at what she does. I usually get a zero taper on the sides and a 5 or so on top and it always comes out clean. A clean taper, lineup, and good conversation for only $13. What a steal. The area is very sketchy so I advise you to not leave any valuables in your car, you're just asking for it to be stolen.
