Server was very good and everything came out promptly for a holiday a little surprised but that's about all the good that can be said. They had a limited holiday menu which I understand but took items off the regular and just jacked the price. My GF and I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago and we both found it very disappointing. The total lack of professionalism by the entire staff is mind boggling. Our server was clueless and made no attempt to smile or be friendly in any way. We went there on a Friday evening and the place was almost empty and now I know why. The food was meh at best, I had Mahi and it was ok because Mahi is such a good tasting fish on its own but they prepare it in a way that was very underwhelming. My GF had chicken parm. and again it was very underwhelming with pretty crappy sauce. I was also looking for a place to have a private party in a couple of months so since we were already there I asked about their private room rental and buffet menu. I spoke to the hostess who could really care less about anything that goes on and asked if we could sea the room. She told us to go upstairs and have a look at it. When we got up there I was blown away at what a hole in the wall it was, the walls where dirty and beat up and the carpet was filthy and bunched up in spots and it smelled very musty. On top of all that there was a whole in the ceiling from a water leak that just had some tape over it. Why anyone would rent that room is a mystery to me, I wouldn't have a party in there if the room was free. The water front in Perth Amboy is kind of cool and this place does have something of a view and it was cool to see a ship pass by right across the street but they have taken what should be a thriving business and run it into ground. Where do I start? Headed over to the barge after being told there was a wait at the armory. What a disaster. Waited 15 mins for waiter to come by. Ordered, got our apps, both disgusting. Was told cook was in the hospital, that is why the salad was terrible. They said being people were coming over from the armory, they were not prepared. The Barge may be great during the week -but don't go Easter Sunday at 5pm My half lobster was as dry as a hockey puck . My daughter is not a seafood fan and ordered the turkey dinner. The meal was plated in layers, white meat, dark meat, stuffing and slopped w gravy. We should have sent it back but didn't want to stay any longer than we had too. We were seated in the front with a table of 8 and a table of 5. The entire back of the Barge was completely empty and the noise volume was unbearable. After walking all of downtown Perth Amboy for a new place to go and not finding one, we decided to go back to the waterfront. The Armory had a long wait so we went across the street to the Barge. The place was packed too but we got a table right away. The service was average, the broiled tilapia I had was good, could have had a little more seasoning. My friend had a calamari and scallop dish she really enjoyed. Location was great by the water. Our waitress Audrey was great she was very friendly snd attentive.got there for early bird special which consisted of soup salad and we had scallops over rice. Gave a really nice Portion-a lot of scallops, we also enjoyed the home made sangria. When dinner was finished we had a specialty coffee called winter wonderland and a piece of homemade cheese cake Audrey suggested-which was to die for. Nothing great about this local hang out..for a drink at the bar it's fine, but if you are looking for great food go elsewhere unless of course you like to get your seafood in a diner because that is basically what this is..a seafood restaurant with an identity crisis with random menu items that are served diner style right down to the monkey dish of runny coleslaw. Been going to the Barge for many years. Dined there last night and everything was great, as usual. I had the fried soft shell crabs and my friend had the stuffed flounder. Everything was fresh and delicious. The service was wonderful - Kenny is the best. The hostess is very friendly and helpful as is the rest of the staff. There where several tables with larger parties (10+) and the service was still excellent and our food was served timely (not too fast and not too slow). I am surprised about the negative reviews. Maybe it's about expectations? This is a great place for fresh seafood, that is simply prepared - broiled, sauteed, fried. It's not a place where you come looking for the latest fusion cuisine or over-seasoned/flavored so you can't taste the fish. I highly recommend the Barge. If you like lobster, try the whole broiled lobster. It's always perfectly cooked. read more

I give The Barge 5 stars because I've gotten the BEST cooked food EVERY time I go. They don't do the fancy cooking - they do the basic, good kitchen. The fish, the steaks, all else are all amazing. Their Sangria, the best! The service is good, the waiters are all pleasant & let you feel comfortable. The atmosphere is a straight-forward by the waterfront place, they don't need distracting decor here, people go here for a good meal, and the Barge always comes through. I've read the other reviews, people saying the food is bland.....not unless you require more spice or otherwise, just let the server know if you might prefer more spice or whatever for your taste, I'm sure they will be more than happy to accommodate you. Went there last night for New Year's Eve dinner. Very disappointing. Worst fried calamari I ever had, tastes like rubber bands in bread crumbs that came off when you tried to pick them up, plus, no legs. Where they go? My broiled sea ford dish with shrimp,scallops, scrod all tasted the same, butter. No seasoning at all. We had to keep asking for water. It seems since there where 11 of us and couldn't split the bill. The staff doesn't work as hard got there tip since it's added. Which would be ok unless you have to beg for water. My best friend and I had just walked into the place and before we could even look at our menus, the waitress was already up our ass before we could even read what we wanted. I would give this 0 stars if I could. We came here for the waterfront atmosphere and expected a seafood restaurant to have fresh seafood and decent food... We thought wrong. We started with the fried calamari which was just frozen and had a horrible after taste, we sent it back. Our main dishes arrived and were equally disappointing, one of the worst experiences and awful food yet they charge fine dinning prices. There is nothing fine about this place. They kept the calamari on the bill and when I asked them to remove it as I sent it back, the manager said she spoke to the owner and he said there's nothing he can do! What?! That is a big no no, if someone sends food back the least you can do is take it off the bill, not refuse it when requested. We were there for my birthday dinner. First we open the door to the place and the owner is ASLEEP behind the welcome station! After he woke up he sat us at table that was not in great shape. The glasses we all filthy. I had to ask the water for different glasses. When he looked for better ones more than half the tray of 'clean' glasses were completely dirty. Even he looked disappointed. The menus were sticky and gross! When the food came out it didn't looked appetizing. Portions were tiny, I ordered. $36 king crab legs and got 4 dried up legs covered in paprika. My Fiancé and I went to dinner and had the nastiest food we ever tasted at this restaurant called "The Barge". We agreed it tasted like two plates of hot steamy card board fish cut outs with herbs on the side! You should have seen My Fiancé's face when they asked us if we wanted dessert. The garlic bread tasted like paprika bread lmao!!! My Fiancé made a song called "Never again" on the way to the car about how nasty the food was! He said even our dog Shadow wouldn't have eaten it!!! I came here as a pit stop with my friend when her mom's flight was delayed from Newark. I was so surprised to find such great food and service at some random place we stumbled upon. Both my friend and I got the broiled salmon and home fries. I also got a Maine lobster tail. Not only was the food pretty to look at and delicious but it was cooked perfectly! Everything tasted fresh and our server, Renee, was so kind and accommodating. My friend brought her three month old daughter and all the wait staff and owner were kind and patient when the baby got fussy. Was really a great experience over all. If you don't know already, Perth Amboy has a really great waterfront promenade including a marina with a view as far as Long Island. Walk across the street to The Barge which is family-friendly, Greek American place. It is a bit old fashioned but the service is good, prices are reasonable, and the fish is worth it. I can see why this place has been around for over 86 years. I applaud them for showing me a night out that sparkled from the moment I walked in to when I left 2 hours later. Our waitress and host were notably warm and cordial. They offered several nice varieties of red and white wine at only $5 a glass. Those reasonable wines were not top shelf, but were perfect table wines for sipping, chatting, and dining. You can easily enjoy two or three glasses. They even offer a savory Chablis, which is something I have not seen on a menu in years. The menu offers a wide variety of seafood categorized by cooking style. Our seafood entrees were fresh, healthy, and cooked and seasoned to perfection. I ordered the Barge Special, baked flounder stuffed with crab and shrimp. My boyfriend had the Choppiono, a generous medley of clams, mussels, and scallops. The portion sizes were medium and well priced. The ambiance fits the place's name as you really feel like you are on a barge. The walls are blue with old seascape paintings, and you have a nice view of the waterfront! They have a lively bar separate from the dining area, allowing for a quiet dining experience. My girlfriend's main course of shrimp scampi was a joke (literally old/smelly spongy shrimp on a bed of PLAIN BOILED linguine) no scampi sauce whatsoever; we had to ask for it. My main course was 6 boiled shrimp with a side of unseasoned fries for over $20. My girlfriend's cousin had an odd dish of shrimp with brown gravy/feta cheese with a side of rice... I was brought here by a someone I work with. I have never heard of this place before. Cool location, right across the street from the water. The restaurant inside is really not very pretty at all. Very outdated and probably hasn't been remodeled in over 30 years. The standard bread on the table was just ok and the basket had breadsticks and crackers too. However with that being said, the food was really quite good. I ordered a lima bean soup for appetizer which was fantastic. My entree was a broiled red snapper. I don't normally write reviews, but Where is Chef Ramsey? My husband and I have date night every week. We like to try out different restaurants, from North (New England) to South (Virginia) Of course repeating our favorite restaurants. This was by far the WORST meal I have ever had! We have had better meals at NJ Diners, where we normally just have breakfast. Their best feature is that they are close to the waterfront. It makes me want to "barf" to think about the meal so I will stop here. I feel bad because when you look around the restaurant the majority is senior citizens. I hope they are giving them a discount because they are being ripped off. We will NEVER go back to The BARGE. Well I wanted to visit the Barge since they rebuilt after hurricane sandy. Sadly the outside is not open. When we walked in there were two waitresses adding up bills. We stood there a few minutes and then one of the waitresses says to the other I haven't even got to table 3 yet and made a sarcastic laugh. It was then explained to us there was no hostess working. After we were seated I said to my sister I hope the one who laughed about not getting to her table wasn't our waitress. After sitting there for 10 minutes with no water or bread unfortunately she was our waitress. Water glasses were dirty and we had to ask for bread two times and she blamed the bus boy. Good thing the food was very good, but expensive . Had to wait for 15 minutes to get the bill and she came over with it and complained how people didn't show up on time to work.
