The service was awful!!!! Let me start by saying this was my first time visiting and I asked all the pertinent questions to ensure I was following proper procedures especially during COVID. My experience was nothing that was described to me when appointment was made for my dog. From the time I dropped my dog off I felt the negative vibes. I was required to pay a $25 fee because it was my first time surprisingly my card information was keep without my permission and charged the difference without my authorization. My dog is older... 10 years to be exact. He has hip dysplasia and arthritis which makes grooming him a bit of terror. From the moment I contacted Barking Lot for a quote, Steve called me within the hour and put me at ease. They deal with "special needs" dogs and aggressive dogs. I brought my Pomerianian in at 7:30 am on Wednesday morning and the ladies were so kind and listened to all of my concerns. He normally has to be muzzled at the vet to do his nails, he gets aggressive when you do his ears or his backside. He hasn't bitten but growls. These ladies knew how to handle my pup. He came out looking wonderful. They advised me to get glucosamine for him so his joints don't hurt so much. They were able to cut his nails too!!!! He looks so sharp and didn't seem to mind the grooming. I am so pleased with the service and the attention to my older dog, that I will never go anywhere else. For years, I went to a big box Pet store and now I realized I should have come here all along. Took my dog here for the first time and had the best experience!! I have tried now three places in Richmond and this place is by far the best! They treated my 14 year old dog well and the grooming job was perfect! The owner you can tell cares a lot and they are handling COVID in a very professional manner. Also I read the past one star review and I have to say that if I was that owner and had someone blocking my business by parking in a no park zone that was important to my business, I would have to say something also. There is only so much space and one car can almost completely block the store. I am new to the area and needed to find a groomer for my 10 yr old wheaten terrier. Yelp led me to The Barking Lot and I was able to make an appt. with just a weeks notice. We have used the same groomer in another state for years and I was nervous to try someone new. The groomers listened to how I wanted his hair cut and did an excellent job! The only comment I would make is that their dropoff/pick up procedure is different than what I'm used to. I believe all dogs are dropped off at the same time in the morning and are picked up at the end of the day, instead of having specific appointment times. I am not sure the rational behind this but I don't think he had to be there so long. I dropped him off at 8 am and picked him up at 3:30 (I assume he took half that time to be groomed). It could probably use a face lift- the store isn't super cute or fancy by any means- but if you can look past that, you'll love The Barking Lot. I love the Barking Lot! The staff was so friendly, they were very knowledgeable, helpful, and when I went to pick up my little man, he practically did not want to leave! I have a stinky little beagle who I had previously taken to Petsmart for a bath (they were cheap and this was our first grooming experience with him). When he left there, he was still shedding like crazy and smelled like wet dog. I figured, eh, maybe that's just what to expect? The Barking Lot is a little pricier but I needed little man cleaned ASAP - and after calling around to many different places, they were able to accommodate me and squeeze him in the day of! When I dropped him off (literally 10 minutes after I'd spoken to them), I had a million questions about his skin, smell, ears, etc. They took care of everything; he is less itchy and irritated thanks to the oatmeal bath they recommended, and they also gave me some tips and guidance about some other issues he had. I also noticed that he was silky smooth - they did a great job brushing him out and I noticed a big different between the $20 deal I had at PetsMart versus the grooming with the Barking Lot. We are big fans of the Barking Lot now and will be going back there from now on. read more

This place is it! We just got home from our first visit to The Barking Lot and I was so happy with how my dog Lily turned out, I smiled the whole way home. Previous groomers made us think she was aggressive to groom as they always left her face not groomed or her nails long. I saw another review that said they worked well with special needs and aggressive dogs, which is why we picked it. When I picked her up, I was told she was no problem/hassle, didn't show any teeth, and basically wanted to lay down and sleep on the table the whole time. So whether it's the skills and compassion these groomers have, the atmosphere, or a combination of all three, it obviously worked well for Lily! I am SO GLAD we found this place. Her nails are trimmed, her face is short, and her fur is sooo soft (thank you medicated bath!). We have already booked our next visit and will recommend this place to anyone we know who has a dog. This place is so wonderful. We rescued a dog yesterday who was a golden living outside and probably hadn't been brushed in years. He was completely matted down to his skin. I called Barking Lot this morning and they found a way to fit him in today. I wasn't expecting much, just a start of a groom to work on it. They made him look like a completely different dog. Today was the first day my puppy got groomed at The Barking Lot and I was very impressed with how they worked with my puppy. I was going to petsmart for grooming before but they could not handle my puppy's curiosity of new dogs and customers coming in and out, energy, and newness to grooming. The Barking Lot owner called me half way through the day and updated me that they were working with my puppy slowly as to not traumatize him. By the end of the day, they were able to get everything done and my puppy looks great! I will be bringing my puppy back here because they are gentle and patient. This is probably the worst hair cut my dog has gotten. I brought him in on 17Sep and i showed the lady a picture of how I'd like him to be groomed. The picture i showed her was of a haircut that he had before. 1. They told me that they would call me when he was ready to be picked up. They never called. I arrived to the shop right before closing (5-5:30pm) and picked him up. This means he had been sitting in a kennel for well over 8+ hours. When i saw him he looked horrified and ready to go. 2. After a few weeks i noticed that his haircut didn't seem right. It was growing out and i noticed how "choppy" and "uneven" it looked. From his face and beard to the wholeness of his body, his haircut was choppy and horrible. 3. I called and spoke to the manager who told me that i would have to PAY to have them look at him and fix the horrible haircut they did. I declined. I will NEVER book services with this dog groomer again. Not to mention that the front room was very dirty and unkept. Animal hair everywhere, dust and smelly. read more

The staff there are incredibly friendly, courteous, and I can tell they really love working with animals from how well they dealt with my cat. He can be pretty crazy when you try to use the clippers on him! I Love the barking lot, I take my cat there once a month to get her nails clipped. I can walk right in and they are usually done in about 2 minutes! I also take her every few months for a bath, which my cat hates but the barking lot does a great job putting her at ease. I dropped off my pug last Saturday for the whole package - bath (with oatmeal shampoo), nails, ears, teeth, anal glands - and when I picked him up he was soft and happy as a clam! I can tell when he's had a bad experience because he tends to get a bit sulky, but he seemed to have had a good time. I was impressed they were able to cut his nails without making him bleed (he HATES nail cutting and is a squirmy wriggler with black nails which often get cut too short). Heads up, they charge $5 extra for teethbrushing because he gets his own toothbrush and paste (which they hold on to for next time, I think?) and I'm okay with that. I dropped him off in the morning and didn't mind that he wouldn't be ready until much later - I figure it gives him time to play with the other dogs and get lots of pets and treats from the awesome staff. I went to this place because I was told it was reasonably priced......the experience was awful. The staff was unfriendly. The waiting area was very Very dirty......but the real problem is they butchered my dog. His coat is much much shorter than requested and uneven as hell. Bald spots , uneven, horrible work. I Would have been better off buying clippers and grooming him myself. Really bummed as I was hoping to find a great new local spot for our dog after getting fed up with Dogma's month long waits (but otherwise positive experiences). I dropped our dog off around 8:30 am and was pretty shocked when they said he wouldn't be ready until around 4:30 pm. I've taken our dog to several different grooming places and never had it take nearly that many hours. I decided to let it be since it's a new place, but I got increasingly worried about leaving my dog crated up for that many hours as I left. Then, beyond the barking lot's control, the power went out around 4:00 pm, and I had to come pick up my dog before they had cut his hair. The power going out is clearly not their fault, but I felt horrible that my dog had been there for so many hours and didn't even get his hair cut. They actually clipped parts before they lost power and then couldn't continue; so, it looks pretty bad :( His hair is way too long for this summer heat and we were determined to get it cut before leaving town tomorrow. We've had to spend hours finding somewhere that can take him in last minute tomorrow morning to get this fixed as the barking lot was not able to do so. My 3-star review is not based on the power issue but the really long day at the groomer. Everyone seemed nice, and I'm sure they do a good job, but I think we'll have to keep looking for a new spot that is more of a half day like the ones we're used to. Wish this could have been our dog's new grooming spot! read more

Brought our precious B.B. here and boy was I happy I did. The customer service is great, the owner himself explained a problem she has with her nails to me! He explained, answered my questions, and advised how to improve the condition! On top of that they offer repeat customers a discount if you schedule the next grooming at time of pickup. They allowed a large window in which for me to return & pick her up due to an usually busy day for me, VERY NICE! Steve has been great with our girls for over 15 years. They cater to each of our dogs grooming needs (allergies). When our lab mix was getting older (going blind and having hip problems), they went out of their way to help her. They would greet her and then let her walk slowly to the back while talking to her the entire time. We have never had any problems with The Barking Lot and they always work with us if we have to move our appointments. In fact, we have continued going here after we moved and it is worth the 30 minute drive each way. read more
