The atmosphere here is wonderfully charming. The food was exquisite. The service was just OK. So often restaurants hire young people and provide them little to no training on how to wait a table. We ordered the clams casino, chowder, chicken curry, short ribs, corn cod, and chicken sandwich. The chowder was good and the chicken sandwich was pretty good -- and the French fries were excellent. The clams casino were average, with breadcrumbs that had a slightly burnt taste. The chicken curry was very disappointing, especially considering how little chicken was actually in it. The short rib portion was also surprisingly small. The corn cod was average at best. Both the cod and curry came out needing to be reheated. The atmosphere was great, and our server was very nice and pleasant, although definitely a bit frazzled. Overall, I think the 3-plus-star rating is pretty accurate. Probably a decent spot for basic food, a drink, watching sports, and enjoying the atmosphere. We were disappointed with several of the dishes, but the atmosphere was good enough that we may give it another try. read more

Calamari was good. Oyster Rockefeller was very good. Dogfish special (huh? People eat Dogfish?) wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it could be and we all tried it. Bottom line, there's a reason why people don't see dogfish on the menu, but they did it as well as it could be done. A couple in our group had the fish tacos and loved them. Another had the lobster Casio y Pepe and ate every bite. I had the monkfish and chips. Sort of like the dogfish, there's a reason why you never see fried monkfish on menus. It was fine but I would go for cod or haddock instead. The seafood casserole went over very well also. Service was excellent and the ambiance in the dining room was very nice. Overall we really enjoyed our meal and the setting and I think this will be a regular stop for us when in town. Have to admire a chef that thinks out of the box and takes chances, too. We recently held a memorial luncheon at The Barley Neck, and everything was exceptional. The food was outstanding--which we knew it would be, as we dine there often--but it was especially nice to hear so many of our guests commenting on how delicious everything was. The setup was beautiful, and the servers were attentive, professional, and terrific throughout the event. Most of all, I cannot say enough about Caroline Leta. She is simply the best event coordinator I have ever worked with. She made the entire planning process easy, had wonderful ideas, communicated exceptionally well, and made sure every detail was just right. She anticipated what we needed and made what could have been a difficult day feel effortless. And, as an added bonus, she's a great bartender! I truly enjoyed working with Caroline and am so grateful to her and the entire team at The Barley Neck for making our celebration exactly what we wanted it to be. I very rarely come on here regardless of what the service is like at a local establishment. Tonight was different. We ate at the Barley Neck Inn tonight. From walking in, seeing Lindsay and Kelly greeting us with warm smiles and cheerful hello's, to our dinner. Everything was exceptional!!!! We started with a dozen Wellfleet oysters on the half shell. How could you go wrong with that as a starter. For dinner my girlfriend had a special, seafood fra diavlo. It had the perfect amount of seafood and spicy sauce. I got the flank steak with cranberry Gorgonzola butter and mashed potatoes. I like my steak rare and this did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked with creamy, buttery mashed potatoes. 10 out of 10 for dinner and service tonight!!!!!! We will be back!!!!! read more

Been many times before, but this was our first time since last October. Three of us and we were all disappointed. My fish tacos, which were billed as fried cod, was a mushy, gooey unappetizing mound of something on 2 corn tortillas. I didn't eat them. I did enjoy the fries. One diner ordered the stir fry, which was a special. It was a mound of mostly rice, with no crisp stir fried veggies and no discernible texture. Last diner ordered the calamari app and a garden salad. Calamari was sauced and not crisp. Salad was served without any dressing. After asking, the server brought some. We've always enjoyed the barley neck inn. Not sure if something has changed or just a bad night. read more

Train wreck of a dining experience. I am a full-time Brewster resident, and I remember this place back when I loved it around 2009-2011. I do not love it anymore. Where do I start? I walked in with my girlfriend on a Friday night just before 9:00PM of the weekend ahead of the July 4th holiday weekend, the zenith of the summer season. Sorry I do not consider 9:00 PM on Friday night a suitable time to think about closing the kitchen. When we asked the first bartender about ordering food, it was clear this posed an inconvenience. We took our seats at the bar and waited a while until I had to ask the other bartender for two beers. Both bartenders certainly made it clear they did not want to be there; isn't this the service industry? When we finally got our food a pizza and a burger, both were disappointing. We finished our first drinks, paid the tab, and left; we will not be back. I do not usually leave negative reviews unless the dining experience is that bad. There are other dining options in the area and visitors new to this restaurant or the area in general should be informed. read more

I have been to two special events at the Barley Neck this year where a buffet was served for all of the attendees. Delicious salad, some raw carrots and celery with dip, Mac and cheese. Sausage and peppers, and garlic bread (I'm pretty sure it was garlic Bread). Last time I was there during Boards In Stores delivery night. There were wonderful $1 dollar oysters! The coconut encrusted shrimp had no coconut or ritz crackers as advertised. It was soaked in coconut milk and had no crust. First time here tonight and we really enjoyed it. Nice atmosphere in the tavern side. Big bar. We had a 12" cheese pizza for an app and it was very good. Then we had the shrimp scampi and the fish and chips. Both were really yummy. Good portions. Cooked well and seasoned well. We had espresso martini and a blackberry sangria. Both were perfect. Food, price and service were terrific. We ordered tapas, apps and salads. The drinks were relatively inexpensive and made well. The only criticism was the tamale con pan was a throw way item. Basically cold canned tomato puree with uninteresting bread for dipping, but it was only $5- so we can't complain about it too much. Lots of fun. read more

Updating my review to five stars because the food has improved and based my experience, the staff continue to be friendly. Our family members live in the area and they said the overall operation has improved in the past two years....so this backs up my limited experience. While it could be hot on a summer day in the yard. It's also a great spot to be as the sun is setting with drink in hand. read more

The BNI offers a wide variety of experiences depending on the time of year you visit as well as where you dine or sit during your visit. We've been there three times and had three very different experiences, all very pleasing! The food is always fresh, perfectly prepared, and reasonably priced. They have three distinct dining areas: inside (the inn), the tent out back (seasonal), and the lawn (happy hours and seasonal). They are all very nice but the inside feels more dressy than the other two, which scream casual dress. The food and menu are varying from pizzas to seafood towers, and I would recommend the oysters no matter which route you choose to go. When by the cape, the seafood is the star and that is obvious by their menu but there are plenty of offerings like burgers and sandwiches should you not wish to indulge in the "frutti di mare" the cape and surrounding area has to offer. Service and cleanliness are superb and what you would expect. There are no complaints, even outside as everything is wiped down/sanitized and the servers make their rounds at a pretty regular frequency. The value is going to depend on what you order, but it's middle of the road for the seafood items: not cheap like the fried shacks that line the main drags but not high as if it were fine dining. I found it to me a decent value (above expected for me, commensurate for expectations for the rest of my family we were there with). No one walked away feeling cheated or complaining in my immediate family (which can be uncommon), so take that as a win. It gets my personal endorsement, as we have been there three times in two summers - so I guess that means I like the place ;) Highly recommend the happy hours and live music on the lawn which have some specials that are exclusive to that dining area. Should you find yourself in Orleans, MA give it a shot - you may find it to be as charming and captivating as we did during our time in the area! read more

We have passed by this place for years heading to Nauset and regret not stopping sooner. The food was excellent as was the service. The oysters were top notch and so were the fried scallops and even the pizzas (not NY style but delicious). The wait staff was absolutely lovely. This is my favorite restaurant in Orleans. For a while, it was the only place my family and I went to every time we were on the Cape. It's a former Inn which informs the ambiance and the staff have always been friendly and professional. The bar area (I think they call it the tavern) can be loud sometimes, so if that's disruptive to your experience, try to get a reservation for the dining room. I recommend the burger and the roast chicken breast! read more

I have been coming the the BNI now for years and this being it's 4th owner and by far the best one yet. The new management cam and Taylor are doing an awesome job. We did the dollar happy hour ribs,shrimp,wings and oysters and my god best on cape. The ribs were loaded with flavor, the wings hot and tasty but not so hot to take out your taste buds. The shrimp were jumbo and the cocktail sauce with horseradish was popping. My wife and daughter slurped down the oysters and there was no complaints there. The service was very knowledgeable helpful and friendly share recommended the ribs and she was not wrong. The out door lawn was full of families it reminded me of a family reunion picnic with all the young kids playing corn hole and tag. It was really a very enjoyable experience and places like this just make cape cod unique and special. read more

What a great place. What must be said first - We visit the cape every year, and we went to the beach later than usual and were looking for a restaurant open after 9 pm. There weren't many, and online said that this place was open until 11. We arrived at 9:20 pm and an extremely friendly, younger member of the team greeted us and asked us if we were there for food. We said yes, and he informed us that the kitchen actually closes at 9, and the bar is open later. But, he said he was going to check with the kitchen to see if they would still have us. A moment after he went to inquire, another person came up to us and said we weren't able to get food because it was passed 9, and to come back earlier next time. We were about to leave when the other staff member came back and happily let us know that they would gladly take our orders, and got us seated. The other gentleman that declined us looked very upset that the younger person asked for the acception, and walked away. We are SO GRATEFUL for this staff member, we know they did not have to serve us as their kitchen was closing and we are so touched that he went the extra mile to see if we could be served. Great customer service on his part! The rest of the staff was very nice and efficient. Nice table setting and quick service. There was a birthday celebration going on in the other room which was quite loud, but it did not take away from the experience. The food was phenomenal. We had calamari, wings, fish n' chips, and two different pastas. The fish was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The pasta dishes were great, and the shrimp in the pasta was large and fresh. We were so grateful to have stumbled upon this restaurant, it's very close to Nauset beach so we will definitely be back, this time before 9! Have been coming to Orleans for years and hadn't tried the Barley Neck until last night. Wow - were we missing out! I had the blackened scallops special and my husband the calamari appetizer and fish and chips- everything was so fresh and delicious. We have a new favorite vacation restaurant! We are a group of four, all over 70, and had dinner a few nights ago at the tavern at the Barley Neck Inn. Consider the noise level which was high; it's not a good choice for a first date! My wife is sensitive to noise and felt quite uncomfortable, though the rest of us were ok. Still, it's loud and three tv's were streaming a Red Sox game. Next, the menu: it is thoughtfully and creatively planned. Yes, the bar food faves are all there, including pizza. What really stands out is how the chef put together a Cape Cod slant on some traditional dishes. A carbonara, for instance, has the cream and bacon and peas you would expect, but it is served as a seafood carbonara with fish and shellfish. Superb! I had a special - striped bass - which was terrific. Thumbs up for the quality of food. Our server was excellent - helpful and efficient - and is someone I would be happy to have wait on us again. read more

Manager Roid Rage! DO NOT GO HERE. My family of 15 came to the Barley to enjoy some live music and good food. While the service was far from great, it was shaping up to be a pleasant night. That was until the manager made his presence known. As we were waiting for our table, my brothers (28 and 32 YO) were sharing a drink at the bar and he completely lost his mind- screaming inappropriate words in our faces, spilling drinks everywhere, and calling us rude names. We were very confused- he claimed it is a law in Massachusetts that you are not allowed to buy other people drinks?? Not good is a complete understatement. read more

The first time we ate here was 23 years ago for a wedding reception. We were thrilled to come back for a full dinner. Lovely atmosphere and friendly fast service. We started with raw clams and oysters. Both were amazing. I had their chowder which was very good with generous portions of clam. Our mains were the Cod Almondine with goat cheese and cranberry risotto and the Fennel broth clams pasta. The good: the cod was spectacular. Perfectly cooked and just delicious. The Fennel broth was also amazing. But to be fair, the risotto was not good. It didn't seem like risotto at all. Starchy and gloppy and the sweet cranberries made it seem almost dessert like. The pasta in the pasta dis was overcooked which was really a shame because the clams and the broth were divine. The good was so good that we could forgive the less than good. We had a party of 10! We waited for 2+ hours on the lawn for our table. Zucchini fritters, wings & calamari were excellent! When we got our table - despite a rude customer who tried to take our table and another couple who had barely waited an hour we're complaining, we were seated. Our waiter was fantastic and I ordered the Stuffed Statler Chicken Breast - very very delicious! It was a bit expensive - but it was an evening with family, celebrating a college graduation!
