Busy place make a reservation if you are going to go. Showed up about 7pm and was told it would be a 45 minute wait. More like 20 minutes. Not to bad. Just a party of 2. We got a small table by the bar and in the walk way. A little crowded for a large guy. Not to bad for as busy the place was. Had the chicken fried steak. Big tender steak. Could cut it with a fork. Side of mashed potatoes and cream gravy over everything. Delicious meal. Second side was onion was plentiful but not as hot as it could have been. Still good enjoyed them. My wife had a bacon wrapped chopped steak. More than she could eat so I enjoyed a little of it very tasty. Didn't need it after such a big meal but there is always room for dessert. Went a few days ago. We shared the fried pickles. SO GOOD! A bit on the spicy side. I had the chicken fried ckn with mashed potatoes and fried okra. The ckn portion was HUGE! It was all delicious! Hubby had the bowl with all of the ckn fried ingredients. He had the green beans. He slurped it up and said it was yummy. Friend next to me had the sirloin with a baked potato and fried green beans. The sirloin was ok, with A1 sauce... She wished she'd gotten the ckn fried steak. The potato was good. The green beans were disappointing. Limp and soggy. My wife, son, and I decided to try the Barn for supper tonight. I'm glad we did. The chicken wings were the best I've had in years. Both bone in and bone out were excellent (and I usually don't care for bone out)! I had the chicken fried steak which was amazing. My wife said she really enjoyed her steak. The place looks so cool when you walk in, and the smells are amazing, however our experience was not great. We got sat pretty quickly after being put on the waitlist. After 10 minutes of waiting patiently for someone to acknowledge us, we had to grab the attention of someone bussing the table to see about ordering drinks. The hostess took our drink order and we waited for bar drinks. 5 minutes went by still no drinks. Waitress finally stopped at our table then walked away without a greeting. Then when she came back a few minutes later she asked us what she could get us to drink. When I told her we'd already got drinks from the hostess as we'd been there 20+ minutes already and had bar drinks we were still waiting on. No apology, no explanation, just asked if we were ready to order. Now I want y'all to know I have waited tables since I was 19 and I know how crazy busy it can be which she was a little busy. HOWEVER, her communication skills were awful. She didn't check on us again until we once again asked the hostess if our food was possibly ready as we were STILL waiting on food 30 minutes after we ordered. We saw people in other sections sat AFTER us get food and pay to leave before we got our food. Once we did receive it, we were THEN explained they were waiting on brisket. Which is all fine and dandy except the burger and fries of my friend were cold as was my chicken. Don't get me wrong the food was delicious even cold but our whole 90 minute experience was not pleasant. The atmosphere was great, the hostess gave us free dessert and our waitress FINALLY spoke more to us as we were finishing up our meal. Please help your wait staff learn better communication/multitasking skills. It takes one second to tell people you'll be right with them. And apologize when things aren't going right. Don't ignore them. Please do better next time. I support the wait staff more than the average person as I know how demanding of a job it is. However her whole section was not happy with her. One lady slammed her receipt down on the table with the pen because she'd been waiting on her card for quite some time. I hate being negative but this needs to be a learning lesson. The food is great... when it comes out as you Ordered it! Two out of 7 orders were right, one was cold, one had to be redone and didn't come out til everyone else was done eating. Took a while to get beers, didn't refill waters u til we asked. Never apologized for order being wrong or the one coming out late. Poor customer service. Been that way every time we've gone. Took a drive here from a Wichita for my hubby's B-day since he is a chicken fried steak connoisseur. It is adorable inside. MIL, FIL, and hubby all had that and each one was very impressed and full. I since I don't do well with gluten, I had the slop bucket nachos which they literally layer up into a large metal bucket and then release them onto a plate at the table. They were HUGE! No way I even got through half, but damn tasty. We will be making this trek again soon. read more

The drive from where we are in Wichita wasn't too bad--about 45 minutes. We used the "Nowait" app to reduce our waiting time. The app said it was going to be about 46-66 min wait before we left our house. You're able to "wait in line" when you're about 25 miles away. By the time I was able to "wait in line" there were 25 parties ahead of us (6:00pm). It was a Saturday evening when we went so I already expected it to be busy. By the time we got near the restaurant it said 17 parties were ahead of us. Our arrival time was about 6:25pm and I lost phone reception by then. I went inside to see the hostess to check in to let her know we had arrived. She said she would text us or call out our names (since I told her my phone didn't have reception--I'm a T-mobile user by the way---but we quickly realized they do have Wifi there!). So we waited near the hostess stand anyway. Then we finally got seated at 7:05pm and got our food by 7:20pm! So considering how busy it was, we were pleased at how quickly our food came out. I think if people go there knowing there's gonna be a wait, the waiting part isn't so bad. I saw that some customers got angry and frustrated at the wait times, but I understand the restaurant business and the wait times are just an estimate since it's all dependent on the current customers who are eating. I would have to add--while I was waiting I did enjoy looking at the decor around the restaurant. You can tell the owners really took the time to put their own tastes and style to it. Now finally to the food review---- we got the Thai Chili Wings, BBQ Brisket Salad with Thai Chili Ranch Dressing, and Chicken Fried Steak. I'm usually a little hesitant to try anything 'Thai' at American establishments, but I was pleasantly surprised. The wings were really crispy and the sauce was delicious! The BBQ Brisket Salad was really refreshing and the Thai Chili Ranch gave it that sweet and salty kick. The Chicken Fried Steak was good but not as memorable as the BBQ Brisket Salad. I wouldn't mind coming back again--maybe for lunch when it's not so busy. But even if we went back for dinner--I wouldn't mind the wait as long as I use the Nowait app. read more

The Barn in Burrton is a welcome addition to the restaurant scene in the suburban Wichita area. On a Thursday evening the place was very busy. Restaurant is about 18 months old at this writing. It has been decorated with local farm implements that are interesting to discuss with your meal companions, servers and other guests. Food is very solid (they are very proud of their chicken-fried steak) and portion sizes are, well, midwestern. We enjoyed helpful service from a knowledgeable staff. read more

First... "No wait consumer" app ( on your smart phone). Do it. You can check in on your way! Be checked in the "wait line" before you get there! They also use it to text you when your table is ready. We arrived at 4:50pm and the place was packed. 30 min wait turned into a 10 which was awesome but there were only two of us and we shared a long table with another couple/ no problem for us. A lot of the tables seat 6 and I would suggest that be the largest group you take at least right now (since the Hutch news article)... I ordered the BBQ Brisket Salad.. AMAZING! I'm not a big fan of ordering salads when I go out but this one was really good. This is, by far, the best place we've ever eaten in Kansas. And we've been to some great places. It was definitely worth the 25 mile drive. We had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans, and the grilled chicken with green beans and a salad. We were both very impressed with everything. The gravy was awesome and the Asian vinaigrette was really good. The jalapeño cheese bites were also delicious, but just know, there's A LOT of them! Plenty to share with your table. Food was just ok, but the service was great with top-notch friendly 5 star service. Atmosphere was awesome, friendly, clean restaurant. Women's restrooms even had a big bouquet of fresh flowers. My hamburger came out a little pink (I ordered well done, so didn't eat it), but ate the hot, crispy fries and we asked for the check & was ready to leave. No problem to me, as I wasn't that hungry. The owner (I assume) came out and said that she saw a little pink in my burger and she was so very sorry & that she talked to her cook to never serve it pink. I told her no problem, but she insisted on replacing the meal. I said "No thanks, no prob." She asked if she could please send a dessert home with me, I said "No thanks, but I really appreciated the offer." But, she truly tried hard to make sure that I was happy with The Barn experience. Let's put this out front. You'll be here a while. But, the food is great, and there is plenty of barny type shit to look at while you wait. What do you care? Your on your phone right now anyway! The bar is on point, as it should be. After all, all but one letter of the name spell "the bar." Order a long island right when you sit down, and by the time you get your chow you won't give two hoots that it took a little while longer than Appledizzle's Chiggin fried steak is BOMB! as are the regular steaks. There is also some really great salmon and a large selection of salads for you weight-conscious fatty boom battys. I hear the pie is fantastic, but I am always too stuffed for dessert. One of the best small town restaurants I've ever found in my life. My dad and I decided to stop here randomly on a long road trip. What a treat! It turns out that the restaurant is newly built and the interior was simply stunning. The food was fresh, wonderful, home country cooking. The service was friendly. Before the advent of resources like Yelp, Zomato, and the likes of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives combing the nation for the next big restaurant discovery, our tools for finding new restaurants were limited to word-of-mouth and keeping your eyes out for parking lots that had a lot of cars in them. These rudimentary methods have their failings: a restaurant can be popular and average, or the person giving you that word-of-mouth recommendation could just have terrible taste. Nevertheless, we like the idea of believing that there's some small restaurant out there that's making killer food in the middle of nowhere. It's American exceptionalism: nevermind the generation that is likely to live in a rural part of the country is probably older and grew up in the dark ages of cooking between the 50's and 70's when everything was canned and microwaved - they're simply out there grinding away in their small town kitchens just waiting for their big break. Unless you're driving from Hutchinson to Newton you're never going to drive through Burrton, KS, but over the past two years they've seemed to get enough business to build a following, After an Eagle article early in the year that following was compounded several times over with an influx of people interested in seeing what all of the fuss was about. To their credit, part of the appeal is that it's probably the best-looking restaurant within the area; the interior lives up to the name, featuring a lot of homey Cracker Barrel-type decorations. Things flow smoothly and people look like they know what they're doing, which is more than can be said for even many Wichita restaurants. The menu matches the tastes of rural Kansas, which is to say that the preponderance of the menu is deep fried. None moreso than the crown jewel of theBarn, the venerable chicken fried steak. That Eagle article touted how many they've sold in the past year, and when you spot one of the comically, excessively, baseball mitt-sized pieces of fried steak move past your table, it's an easy decision to make. Chances are you drove here knowing full well what you were going to order, anyway. The steak was fried as well as would be expected for a restaurant that has no less than 12 different deep-fried things, with a deep crunch and adept seasoning giving way to a beefy and tender piece of mystery steak. Joining the party was some freshly-made and under-seasoned mashed potatoes, with little chunks of potato just like my mom used to make, and a fresh parker house roll. Although not the star attraction, the burger is well-conceived, with some bumps in execution. The kaiser bun works well with the medium-well ground beef, again seasoned and with some well-melted jack cheese, but the heat promised in the Barn Burner burger - with jalapeno bacon, ghost pepper cheese, fried jalapenos, and spicy ketchup - was nowhere to be found. The bacon was interesting in the sense that it was very fatty, so even when cooked to a well-done appearance, there's still a lot of fat that doesn't render, so it stays chewy and when you bite into it you get alternating bits of crispy/chewy that isn't like most other bacon I've had in restaurants. I had the burger. The other three people who visited with me all ordered the CFS. They all liked it but were overall disappointed that it wasn't the most amazing version of chicken fried steak the hype led them to believe. It succumbed to the same pitfalls of most chicken fried steaks: all of the surface area covered in gravy quickly becomes soggy, the gravy never has the right amount of pepper in it, and it's served in eye-popping portions that compel you to eat too much, making you feel heavy and a little ill within a short time after eating. The fundamental misunderstanding about theBarn and many like it in small towns across the country is that they exist to feed their local community; if they were interested in seeking nation-wide acclaim, they would move to a city that has a population of more than 900 and a customer base on which to build. For all of those making the 30-minute drive from Wichita like my party, there's never going to be enough to offer to make me choose the drive over a similar experience within the city limits. I imagine that's the case for many of the other 3,000 chicken fried steak-eaters that swarmed the restaurant to such a degree that the owners posted a public apology on their website. The small towns of America may not have the hidden gems that we've always wanted to believe, but places like theBarn should be applauded for providing a very competent dining experience despite the limited audience. Even if it's not the legendary experience your friend told you about, it's still a fun experience to make the drive to the kind of old-fashioned town where the owner cooks with his gun on his hip and the manager gets the whole restaurant to stop and sing Happy Birthday to a 98-year old woman. read more

Usually hear only good things about this place. It's a must stop spot. But this time, rather disappointed. I understand being busy. We brought seven people, and every order except one was right. And the one that was right, was cold. The beers came 20 minutes late, rolls were fresh out of the fridge, forgot the right sides, sauces and forgot one meal completely, that we got at the end of our meal. Didn't receive any apology, or a "hey, we are busy and we are sorry it's messed everything up." Just sat the food down and left. Gave us Togo boxes and the ticket while we had people still eating, never received a refill, etc... If you go, be sure to walk around the large metal structure in the middle (it is a piece of farm equipment, I just don't know what it is called.) I especially love the bathrooms! It was Saturday night, and even though our party of 5 was ahead of the dinner rush (we thought), our wait was over 30 minutes. Pretty crowded at the front end while waiting. We were seated at a high top table. Rather noisy. Hard floor, hard walls, metal grain bin bar. Loud table of twelve next to us. But we came for the food...and dessert. We started by ordering dessert. And, dang it, they were out of cherry pie. In our group we had chicken fried steak, a burger, chicken sandwich and something else. It was all really good. And there was plenty. This place is well worth the wait. My husband and I drove in from Wichita and put our names on the waitlist on our way. Once we arrived, we still had about a 30 minute wait, but we completely expected it. We ordered chips and queso as an appetizer. It also came with salsa. The chips and salsa were great, but the queso tastes like something poured out of a jar. For our entrees, my husband got chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn and I got chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was delicious! The steak and chicken were huge, the mashed potatoes tasted just like grandma made them from scratch, complete with a few chunks of potato! This place is well worth the drive and the wait!
