I enjoyed a couple breakfasts here while I was staying at the inn. The food was good - I had corned beef hash and poached eggs both times - and the service was friendly. The coffee could be better. I posted an honest review of Dorset Inn restaurant two weeks ago on June 17 and Yelp has since taken it down. I am posting it again now because diners need to see all reviews not just the ones that Yelp feels are good. "Everyone at the restaurant is very nice. We paid $184 for dinner including tip. Had 2 cocktails, 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. Food was good except for my Cod fish "special". Cod should be firm and flaky, mine was soft and mushy. I should have sent it back but wound up eating 70% of it. Later that night stomach pains kept me up a good part of the night. Why would you sell fish that's past its prime and call it a "special" no less. You do your customers a disservice by doing so and damage your reputation. Rather than deleting this post again, why dont you respond to it. read more

We really enjoyed our dining experience at the Dorset Tavern. Melissa was our server and she was excellent, great attention to detail. For starters we had the Dorset bakery rolls. To be quite honest I would skip these, the rolls are not all that special. I have had rolls similar to these and for free when I've dined at other places. We also ordered the roasted butternut goat cheese and it was good. For our entrees I had the Dorset burger and my girlfriend had the buttermilk fried chicken. Both of our entrees were delicious. The burger was served with bacon, and cheddar cheese. I also had some sweet potato fries. The burger was cooked perfectly and it tasted very good. My girlfriend really enjoyed her chicken, she said it was fried perfectly, it was very moist. To end the night we had the chocolate pecan pie! I highly recommend the pie. It was perfect. read more

I've been coming back here basically every year when I come back home to Vermont and I will stand by this that the pork ribeye is the greatest bite of pork I've ever had. It's outstanding. I tell everyone to order it and they think how good can it be so they don't order it and then I give them a bite of mine and they instantly regret it. Just trust me and order it. Great atmosphere for a true Vermont vibe. The smoked trout chip dip is the perfect starter as well and for someone that doesn't like beets the beet salad is delightful. OH! I'm writing a fresh review based on our most recent visit. Still such a charming restaurant, the historic/colonial vibe is lovely. It was Halloween night when we were there so it was crazy busy with kids traipsing through with their costumes, so perhaps that stressed the servers out, but I did think the service was less attentive than previous visits. And, I think the overall value of what you're getting has declined. The small Cesar salad was truly small and depressing. The side vegetables were a bit simplistic and plain. Not quite what you expect for the prices. We will still go here because Dorset is just a charming little village and the inn is cozy and snug, but I'm not sure I'd rave about the food to anyone. read more

We've been here many times and have never had a bad meal. Until last night! Maybe they were having an off night? I hope that's all it was because the space itself is one of my favorites in Manchester. We had a reservation and came in right on time. We were told our table was being prepared. And then three other parties came in and were seated while we stood there waiting. Then we were asked if we were being helped - yes, we've been waiting for our table! We're now seated. No apology. Order drinks and starters. Drinks never come. Starters arrive. Still no drinks! I had to ask where they were. When they arrived the server actually said it took too long because they couldn't "find the things to make it." The drink was on the menu!! We were never asked if we wanted another drink. The food was practically inedible. My pasta had a single green bean in it from who knows where - green beans were not part of the dish. I barely touched my food. No one asked if I liked it, and when it was whisked away, I wasn't asked if I wanted to take it home, despite it being virtually untouched. What a disaster! It's going to be a long time before we're back, if ever, sadly. read more

Location / ambiance were top notch. The food was fantastic. Their fresh baked rolls were some of the best bread I've ever had (and I lived in Paris for two months). The dessert was delicious. The service was top notch, everyone helped bus each others tables so there were never any empty plates & cups sitting for long. Would definitely recommend this place if you are considering. Was expecting it to be expensive as it's a well known and historic establishment. Drink menu said one price, however when the bill came it said a different (more expensive) price. We had a wonderful dinner at the Dorset Inn Restaurant last night! We enjoyed a lovely summer evening on the front patio, with birds singing and the smell of flowers adding to the overall experience. We ordered the grilled shrimp cocktail, beet carpaccio salad, and two of the dinner specials-sea scallops and cod. Everything was delicious and presented beautifully. The dessert special was a chocolate chip cookie sundae made with honey ice cream (tasted more like fabulous vanilla ice cream) and if you are lucky enough to find that on the menu, go for it! Oh yes, the dinner rolls (add the cheese!) are well worth the few extra dollars. Natalie was our server, and she was great. All in all, one of our favorite meals on our most recent visit to VT (it always is). read more

Stopped in for a quick night cap before closing time. Due to COVID they close a bit on the early side at 9pm on the weekends. No seating at the bar, but you are welcome to walk up order and take a seat in the living room area to enjoy your drinks fireside on a cold Vermont night. They are practicing safe COVID measures, tables distanced apart and mandatory mask wearing. The drinks were great and well mixed. The inn is a super cozy and quaint situated right on the corner in the center of town and have parking along the street. Can't wait to make it back for dinner and a stay at the inn! read more

A long drive on a winding road brought us to this gem. We were seated outside on a perfect evening with a nice view of the town. We started things off with a Strawberry Paloma and a Skeleton Key cocktail. Service was good and friendly. We had a leisurely evening, which is exactly what we wanted. The place was busy, but courses were brought out in a timely manner. We started with a Crab Cake and the Soup of the Day. Both exquisite. We followed that up with the Roasted Beet Salad and Smoked Trout plate. The sole entree was the Soft Shell Crab. We can honestly say that the food is worthy of a Michelin star or two. Oh, and if you are a wine aficionado or a whiskey lover, check out their extensive menu selections. I ended up ordering a Sazerac. Oddly enough it was served on the rocks, but was a nice and surprising choice on the drinks menu. We ended our evening by taking a slice of the house made Key Lime Pie home for dessert. We have eaten here three times now and the food has been consistently excellent. I have tried the steak, the pork chop and veal entrees. My wife had the turkey croquettes. All four were excellent and I would order them again. The mussels appetizer was outstanding and almost a meal in itself. The crab cake was one of the best I've ever had. I had the bread pudding for dessert and it was excellent. Every item I've had has been outstanding. The service is fine but perhaps a little on the slow side for some people. The ambiance is genteel and classy. One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Can't wait to go again. read more

My eggs over homemade delicious corn beef hash hit the right points, plus my thick crusted and buttered english muffin made my taste buds sing. Second breakfast we got 2 of the daily specials. My marscapone stuffed french toast served with warm Vermont maple syrup made my taste buds sing! Went to have breakfast on a Friday, which usually is some of the best you can find anywhere. Truly used to be amazing! However, they don't serve breakfast anymore except for wedding guests. My wife and I had dinner here tonight and I and to say,it's one of the best experiences,beginning to end, that we've ever had and we've been to Michelin Star restaurants, the French Laundry and many others. We were seated at our table. This restaurant is in an old 1800's style house. So comfortable and well appointed. We stared with a small Cesar salad with white anchovies. Get the anchovies. No over bearing. My wife had the fall harvest salad and it was very good. For dinner, my wife had duck and I had the rib eye pork steak. On my gosh! Both were to die for. Both are "highs" we'll be chasing for a long time. A special shout out to Rachel our server. She was wonderful. Everything about this place is worth it and forthcoming back too. this nice old inn has been my local for 40 years. I haven't gone for quite a while due to the corporate flavor in there. (It is part of a group of seven restaurants managed by a corporation). I missed the place so I went in last night .... boy, it is not like it used to be. They were probably eight very boisterous golfers that were enjoying themselves and their cocktails. I could hardly hear myself think with the banter that was going on with them. Pretty obnoxious! and ruined the ambiance. Now the killer : Two appetizers and two drinks came to $90. $17 for a glass of the house Cabernet? Are you kidding me? Sad to say goodbye to this old place. read more

My husband and I have gone to the Dorsett Inn for many years and always enjoyed it. Nooney was the waitress back then and there was never a time where we were starving after we ate. Look at the portion sizes now and the prices are literally triple. We were so disappointed and we left without ordering dessert. Tonight, we were sitting in hotel rooms eating snacks because we were still starving from not eating enough food after paying over $300 for dinner, we got a phone call from the Dorsett inn asking us for our credit card because somehow they did not merge our bar tab with our dinner. When I told them how I felt about the way the restaurant is being run now with smaller portions, she said sorry you feel that way and hung up. We will never go there again!!!!! Finding a restaurant that's high quality, not going to kill your wallet and great service is hard in the Manchester area of Vermont. Dorset Inn absolutely meets all three of those descriptions. When you go you can sit in the dining room or the tavern (whatever your speed is these days with COVID). Reservations preferred but we walked in the day of and rolled the dice on a Tuesday and they squeezed us into a table in the tavern. Manhattan with Bulliet was spectacular and given in a huge glass compared to other places that serve you cocktails in a glorified Dixie cup. Thanks to the past reviews of the soup and pork ribeye which were prepared perfectly. A must visit if you are in the area. read more

My wife and I have stayed and dined at Dorset Inn twice before and we have never been disappointed! On this trip we were staying nearby and were dismayed that due to Covid and labor shortages most restaurants, even in the 2 major resort/spas are closed Monday thru Wednesday! But not The Dorset Inn , they're open 7 days! We scored a reservation on a Tuesday night at 6:30 and were we glad we did! The place was packed and their cozy tavern was full! But service was never an issue as we were seated immediately and the waitress did not miss a beat! I opted for the Pasta Special which was Swordfish and a white sauce over fettuccine. My plate was clean when I finished! My wife had their highly recommended Turkey Croquettes and she has not stopped talking about it! A truly pleasurable evening and as we were leaving at 8:30 there were still people arriving and a very well dressed crowd remained in the cozy Tavern! It is my wife's birthday and I knew we had to go somewhere special. We passed by this place recently and read up on its reviews. For an inn with 24 rooms, the kitchen is definitely firing on all cylinders. Never did I felt it was too busy or were we being rushed. I got the mussels with curry sauce as appetizer and I ate it all up and drank the sauce. It was a great pairing. My wife got the crab cake appetizer and it was very succulent and it swam beautifully in the sauce. My son got the penne pasta with beef bolognese sauce and while the sauce was a tad watery, he complemented on the real bolognese of the dish. I got the Dorsey inn burger which came with bacon, crispy onions, lettuce and tomato and of course pickle with freshly fried fries. It was definitely a complete burger with all the cool frills. My wife got the duck breast and while it had some fat on the duck breast, she thought it was cooked perfectly and the sweet corn with local harvest carrots were a nice touch. All the dishes came out piping hot from the kitchen which is a plus for us, For dessert, my son got the bread pudding with bourbon hard sauce while my wife got the flourless chocolate torte. Both were very rich and decadent. They even accommodated my wife's birthday by presenting the cake with a lit candle on top. Take it from a local - it's gone downhill. We used to go to the Dorset Inn once a month for about ten years - we'll never go back again in its current state. New ownership bought our previous favorite a few years back and promptly doubled prices. It's not just the extreme prices but the quality - the desserts, for example, we loved (that did remain on the menu) have shrunk to 1/3 of their former size. Also, the knowledgable staff of a few years back - the people who really knew food, Vermont and hospitality - have been replaced mostly by teenagers. I have never seen this type of corporate takeover up close, and it was really sad. Maybe one day, the wonderful former staff and some of us locals will do a rescue operation/hostile take over and restore it to its original greatness. I booked a special birthday dinner for my partner and her best friend. At the time that i booked the reservation, I indicated to the person who took my call that this was an important birthday and I wanted to surprise my partner with a birthday cake for dessert. The person said "absolutely" and we'll have a small and special cake with candle for desert. This past Saturday when we arrived for dinner, I excused myself from the table to walk into the reception area in order to find the Maitre D to confirm that there would be a birthday cake at the conclusion of our meal. The Maitre D assured me that they knew about this and all was confirmed. When our main meal was complete (I acknowledge that the food was very good), our waitress came over to take orders for dessert. I clearly believed this to be part of the ruse and that a birthday cake with candle would soon appear at the table to great fanfare and surprise. Some minutes later however, to my great shock and chagrin, the desserts that my partner and her friend had ordered were served. Not wanting to absolutely destroy the evening, I initially said nothing and they ate their desserts. Before they finished, however, I got up from the table and walked into the other room and expressed my complete horror to the fact that the birthday cake had not been served and that the surprise and this very special (and expensive) birthday dinner had been ruined. The Maitre D was also in apparent disbelief, walked-over to tell the manager who went to get the waitress, apologized to me once... and at that point i went back to my table and guests not wanting to ruin the evening because of the complete screw-up by the Dorset Inn Restaurant. The waitress came over and gave a lame "I understand that it's your birthday" to my partner... then brought over a scope of ice cream with a candle in it. I was mortified. I then had no choice but to tell my partner and friend that I had, in fact ordered a birthday cake (they shouldn't think that I'm completely lame) but the restaurant staff had forgotten, and that I apologized for their screw-up. Now my primary complaint with the Dorset Inn Restaurant management is not that they had forgotten to bring the cake (even though i reminded them at the beginning of the meal), but that after their acknowledged mistake, they basically did nothing to make this gross screw up right. A scoop of ice cream?! No apology to me when we left the restaurant, no offer of a cordial or glass of champagne... nothing at all! They even charged me for the two desserts that were ordered! Nothing off of this expensive meal, no attempt ameliorate the bad situation. Completely classless response, that left a very bad taste and what was to have been a celebration for my partner's important birthday. Has to be a reflection of how this establishment is operated and the public should know this story. read more

Didn't know anything about the place but reviews were good. Came in greeted right away and sat with in 5 minutes. Ordered our drinks came out in timely manner. We ordered two cesar salads and our main course of black bean burger and pork ribeye. We had a happy mistake when they brought out a wedge salad and a cesar. To our surprise the wedge salad was amazing. So now the main course comes out and the pork ribeye was so tender and full of flavor I devoured it in no time so not regret it at all. When a place has good bread you know it will be spectacular, this place had good bread!! For my entree, I had the best fresh fried chicken ever. The breading was so well done and the vegetables and potatoes that came with it were so fresh. If I lived in the area I would come back regularly to try their seasonal dishes. Spent New Years Eve here and had a 5 Star meal! The bread was hot, fresh & crispy- especially our second basket, which contained 4 rolls compared to the 2 in our first basket. I hate how some restaurants, and I mean pricey ones, have gotten an attitude about the amount of bread they give. Anyway, theirs was great, and the butter fresh , soft, and unsalted. The amuse bouche & salad were very good. My salmon was the best I can remember in a long time. His filet was raved over, as well. The side of Brussels sprouts was excellent. Tasted of just olive oil and a bit of lemon. Service was excellent, even though it was busy, and the atmosphere festive but not wild. Live music in another room was just right.
