Hey yummy local place for breakfast. Lots of local scenes, and a party homemade breakfast.

Weekend special #2 - simple good food
    Lily F.

My boyfriend used to visit here as a child and he was excited to take me here. And even though I have never been here, it felt like a diner from my own hometown. It also felt like the decor hasn't changed in a couple of centuries. There is absolutely nothing fancy about this place and yet it's pretty magical. The food is simple, home cooked breakfast food that will make you feel like you've traveled back in time. I ordered the weekend special #2 which came with sausage, eggs, pancakes, potatoes and toast. It was not even $10. The pancakes were so thick and hearty and I've been thinking about them for an entire week. And I keep hearing about the chicken and biscuits. Guess I'll have to come back for those. Come here for some nostalgia and great food.

Good breakfast, generous portions that don't break the bank. Small local spot with great service and a very relaxed atmosphere.

Nice diner, best turkey club around. This business has been around for a lifetime and continues to serve its community and visitors.

I stopped by the Castleton Snack Bar for lunch recently while heading towards Rutland…read more This outside drive-in restaurant (snack bar) is located off US Route 4, along VT Route 4A and serving up ice cream and hot foods. This snack bar offers Hershey's Ice Cream (hard), 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream, low fat frozen yogurt, shakes, floats, sundaes, burgers, hot dogs (short & long), corn dogs, chicken, fried seafood, grilled sandwiches, a decent selection of fried foods, and Coke fountain drinks. Bring the dog since they offer the "Dog Dish" for the pooch. The prices here are fair, a small cone is around $2, sundaes $3.75, banana splits $5 and most sandwiches are $2.85-$5.50 before tax. A lobsta salad roll is $5.95. Sandwiches and burgers can be upgraded into boats (fries and drink) for $3.30 more. This snack bar has outside order/takeout windows with picnic table seating next to the building. I ordered a Steak & Cheese Sandwich ($5.50) with grilled onions & peppers and Fried Pickles ($3.25), which was ready in about 10 minutes after ordering. The food tasted pretty good, similar to fair food. The fried (dill) pickle chips had a crispy and very spicy tasting cornmeal batter (a bit greasy) with ranch dressing on the side for dipping. The steak and cheese sandwich had thin shaved steak, green pepper, red peppers, sweet onions, and lots of melted cheese on a grilled hoagie roll. However, steak & cheese sandwich was extremely greasy, soaking right through the paper bag and through several newspapers on my car seat. While I enjoyed the steak sandwich less the excess grease, I was definitely not a happy camper cleaning up the grease in the car. If you enjoy greasy drive-in food and some ice cream at fair prices, this roadside stand is good place to stop.

They were voted 2019 #2 Best Restaurant in the Rutland area and I think they were robbed. My husband began the night by choosing a menu option that allows customers to buy the back of the house staff a round of cream ale which causes them to erupt in kitchenware percussion and celebratory hooting. The Potato Leek soup was velvety and delicious. They served us the best fried Brussel Sprouts that I have ever eaten. They were crispy, well seasoned and the aioli was also good but they didn't even need it. I am not much of a drinker but their specialty margarita was so well made (and strong) that had I not already gotten quite precious after the first one, I would have ordered another. My husband liked the cauliflower, squash mac and cheese special. My mushroom ravioli with capers and cream sauce were also delicious. We finished up with a house made lemon-lime cheese cake. Usually, citrus is not welcome in my dessert. I prefer chocolates, cookies and caramels in my cheesecake. I want to know that my Diabetic Ketoacidosis Emergency admission to a backwater hospital was well earned. However, it was delicious. The service was friendly and unpretentious, in my adorable, slightly drunken state I became absolutely thrilled when one of the waitresses was publicly gifted with a Plague Doctor Squishable (look them up). I ordered mine in September and cannot wait to receive it. I felt an immediate, margarita and plague doctor inspired, affinity We'll be back

Yes, there are a few nightly specials but the regular menu has hardly changed in years. The food is good, but as regulars we are getting tired of the offerings and coming less as a result.
