Nice and cool restaurant on a hot and smoke filled day. Ordered the etxegarate cheese & membrillo (mild sheep cheese with baguette) and paella roll (chicken, chorizo, & seafood paella wrapped in s crunchy roll and fried to perfection ). To get to the restroom, you have to go through the kitchen - wonderful smells of the cooking food. Makes this a 5 star restaurant. read more

We had a lovely evening at the Basque Market! Because of covid, we sat outside on their patio which has some propane heaters; it was perfect. The owners Tara and Tony, and their daughter Itxaso, were very welcoming, warm, and friendly and made sure everything was perfect. We had pinchos, the croquetas, the paella, and the green peppers, and everything was delicious! They also have a great selection of wines by the glass that went extremely well with the food. They also have wine bottles at great prices, which you can either buy to go or drink them on site after you pay a reasonable corkage fee, which we did. Such an amazing place! After a commute from Oakland, Ca to Boise for a 3 hour meeting I was ready for a special bite in celebration of my birthday. These people are very good at what they do. I was allowed to taste a wine or two before settling on a glass. I ordered the 3 for 5 tapas bites and each one more delicious than the next. My favorite had a bit of White Anchovy and Spicy Pepper, and Olive. Wow what a flavor sensation. I also really liked the Zucchini Frito, Manchego & Pepper Jam on baguet. First of all, how amazing is it that there is a Basque Market here?! I lived in Spain for quite some time and have always found it difficult to find good quality Spanish food since moving back to the U.S. I'm not too picky with my food, except when it comes to Spanish food so I am always cautious with what Spanish restaurants I go to. This one definitely makes it to the top of my list! I had heard that there was a huge Basque population in Boise so I was incredibly excited to try this place out and boy it definitely did not disappoint! It's a very casual place and even has a little "market" area behind the tables that sells some of my most favorite Spanish goodies ahhh it felt like I was back in Spain again. After being distracted by the goods they sold, I made ny way to the counter where I ordered aome tapas. We came a little earlier than 5 (which is when Happy Hour begins) so we had to order off of the regular menu. My friend and I shared croquetas, tostadas, patatas bravas and chorizo--all of which were so delectable! Not the exact thing as what I used to have in Spain but pretty close. The only thing I wish they did was use the Brava sauce instead of seasoning. Patatas with mayo isn't quite the same thing as brava sauce. read more

This market is extraordinary. Upon entry you are instantly transported to Basque Country with the crowds, small tables, smells and hot plates. The fridge is packed with beautiful smoked sausages and aged cheese. There's tapenade ready for you or all the fixing for you to make your own. There is also a solid collection of Spanish wines available for you to purchase and take home to pair with your paella or to enjoy right there with your chorizo bocadillo. Loved this! The food was 5 star! We were there for paella lunch ... so perfect. It was cooked outside in this giant pan. And the whole thing was gone in 30 minutes. We also got a trio of the pintxos...small bites....but oh so delicious. And we got an order of the croquetas.....they look like a large tater tot that is filled with gravy. A fun indoor and outdoor place on a pedestrian mall in Old Town. There are Basque specialties and small plates. But we ended up ordering a Reuben and a Caesar salad. Both dishes were tasty and enjoyable, and the afternoon crowd was friendly. We'll be back to try some Basque specials next time! read more

Love this place! One of the most charming things about Boise is def the Basque Street and this market is such an essential for the street. I've had their pintxos which were all pretty good, but my favorite is definitely their paella days. I wish they offer it more often bc it's so good! Fantastic place for lunch. This place is a little hidden but glad I found it. This place specializes in spanish style tapas and have a large variety of menu items to try. I tried the cod rellenos, mushroom estafado, and the shrimp pil pil. The shrimp pil pil is more like an appetizer but an amazing one. you get shrimp soaked in wine, butter, and herbs with a baguette to eat with. The flavor is amazing! The mushroom dish surprised me. I was expecting little mushrooms or just the cheap kind but they had large chunks of good mushroom. The sauce had a little heat and it was fantastic. The cod rellenos was good however I wish it had more cod. I felt it was more filling than anything. Still tasty and very well put together. The Basque Market is a great place to learn about the rich Basque culture of this area. We tried some Basque cuisine; the cheese croquettes were great! Back in 2009, The Basque Market held a function for our convention where they use a gigantic paella pan and cooked for hundreds of people! Apparently they do this at least once a week during the warmer seasons. This last time I was at the market I bought a Basque cookbook. I can't wait to try some recipes. read more

It was my last day in town, so I thought I'd try something completely new to me. I had the paella lunch, which Basque Market offers Wednesdays and Fridays. $9 got me a generous portion of chicken, chorizo, and seafood paella. In addition there are several tapas available for purchase. I went with a battered and fried piece of chorizo, some potato salad, and a mini turkey and ham Monte Cristo sandwich with quince jam. While the paella was less flavorful than I would have hoped, the variety and novelty made it a great dining experience. I especially liked the Monte Cristo, which had a strong cheese that played well with the sweet jam and salty ham. read more

Food: who knew Idaho had a strong Basque community? This restaurant is a lovely homage to Basque cuisine which is so unique in itself that you have to try it if you are visiting Boise. Red Bean Chorizo Soup: a house made recipe that is good, old fashioned hearty soup that goes wonderfully with the fresh bread (very similar to French baguettes in texture) Lamb Meatballs: I personally loved this dish. It is simple but flavoured so nicely with peas and potatoes! Even though we had this in the summer, I can imagine it being a great winter meal. Beef Tongue: you can have it in the brown or tomato sauce. We had in brown and the tongue was cooked well, it's extremely tender and again is superb with the bread. Paella: this was probably the best thing we had, it had excellent flavour and hearty chunks of chorizo, vegetables, and plenty of warm fluffy rice. The Basque can do paella well! Service: our server was delightful, kind, and very knowledgable about the menu. He gave us excellent recommendations and was prompt with all of our orders. Ambiance: it's a homey, cute mum-and-pop sort of restaurant with local Basque artwork adorning the walls and menu. It seems quite a few locals and businessmen like coming here for lunch. read more

Today was my first trip to the Basque Market. I've heard over and OVER how good the Paella was, and--due to the limited times they serve it--haven't ever had a chance to make it over. Today, however, was the day! Paella is served Weds & Fri at 12pm until it's gone and Thursday at 6pm. Let me tell you, it usually always sells out in about 10 minutes! Food: I ordered the Paella lunch special. It was about $9.50 and came with a HUGE plate of paella (filled to the brim with seafood!) and a side roll. Tapas (pay per toothpick) were also offered, but I opted just for the paella this time. Boy, it was good! The flavor was bold and nice and salty. The meat was cooked to perfection (I loved the sausage chunks!), and the added green beans and peppers helped me feel like I was eating something "healthy." This will definitely be a return venture! Drinks: n/a Happy Hour Offerings: n/a Atmosphere: While the interior space is small, it's cozy and suggests that it's a popular spot. I know the paella regularly sells out, so it's a "be there on time or you're square" kind of scenario. I'd give it a better rating were the space a little bigger and more inviting. Service: The woman who took my payment was very helpful and explained the offerings of the Basque Market to me. I would have appreciated a bit more detail on their menu items and explanation of "how it works," and as they weren't busy, I should have asked more questions. The paella chef was very friendly and served me immediately, also reminding me of the other times he serves the dish. Smart! I'll be back! Overall Quality: Absolutely superb. To be able to watch the chef prepare the paella and then enjoy a hot plate of it right away is great. Overall Value: A little spendy for a lunch plate ($9.50), but considering the heaping amount of seafood that was included in it, I'd spend it again any day. TIPS: Paella only served Monday & Weds for lunch and Thursday at dinner. It sells out FAST so get there on time! You can also take it to go! read more

I've been purchasing Spanish and Basque non-perishables from here for years. Today, I decided to order lunch along with my Spanish groceries. What a fabulous decision. My sister and I split our sandwiches (Chorizo Pamplona and the Turkey con Manchego) and our sides (potato salad and rice pudding). The staff there actually split them for us - at no charge. Both of us ate lunch for $12 - what a DEAL! It was delicious and with some bites I felt as if I were sitting at an outdoor cafe in Spain. The potato salad, specifically, tasted of Spain. The rice pudding was creamy and the added dusting of the cinnamon lauburu was a nice touch. Their red pepper aioli on the turkey sandwich added a perfect depth of flavor to what could have been a standard turkey sandwich. We added some croquetas from the nearby Bar Gernika and had a lovely lunch. At these prices, the wonderful outdoor patio and the delicious food, I don't see how you can go wrong here. read more

This is a must visit while in Boise. Located downtown, it's a great place to grab some tapas and a glass of wine. The tapas are set out and you are able to pick what you would like. When paying the tab, they just count how many toothpicks and give you a total. The salmon croquettes with a lemon sauce were delicious. First time into this neat market. They are the only place in Boise to get dried cod fish for our Christmas Eve meal. So while here, we decided to have lunch too. The ladies helped us decide what we would like. Get a menu, mark down what you would like and they will get to the cooking quickly. Very personable service and answering of newbie questions. We had two different soups: tomato bisque and potato-leek. both excellent renditions of these soups. My wife loved the potato-leek because it was not a creamy soup, but a clear broth potato soup. With the soups, we had croquettas,and a paella sandwich. All of these were tasty and satisfying. I washed it all down with a micro-brew from Utah. The finishing touch was the rice pudding. since my wife is an aficionado of rice puddings, I asked her opinion. She judged it more soupy than she was used to, but still a good rice pudding. We will try the flan next time. We added some candies and olives to the cod fish for our groceries to go home with. They have many interesting things to try and for gifts. The Basque Market is truly a Treasure Valley gem! Once again, this little place impressed us beyond expectations. We started out with an amazing bottle of Spanish wine, Izarbe Reserva. This place was a real treat. I ate here on the Friday of 4th of July weekend, when I was walking around downtown Boise. I stepped in and was immediately greeted by friendly staff, who showed me how the tapas "bar" worked. You pick out what you want, put it on a plate, eat it...and then they cash you out based on the various toothpicks that were in the food. I tried 5 pieces, loved all of them - from a watermelon ginger gazpacho to a Basque Egg Salad crostini to a chicken apple salad - very delicious. After lunch one of the staff saw me out front fiddling with my phone and they offered navigational assistance. "I'm not lost," I said. We had three different choices for each course, and really enjoyed the pork shank/yam and angel hair pasta (manchego, tomato) main dishes. The pork was served with a delicious homemade cranberry sauce as well. I have never had pork shank that tasted this good. My wife enjoyed the basque cider, and they had a varied wine selection as well. I was satisfied with my wine, a recommendation that replaced one on the menu that they had run out of. Ate inside at the communal style tables, 2 or three other couples in there at the same time. Nice selection of Basque goods to look around at while waiting too. We will probably end up coming back in the daytime for some picnic items as well, as it looks like they had a fridge of olives and various spreads. read more

Visiting Boise I found this place thanks to fellow yelpers. The high ratings are completely justified for this little place. It is a market and a restaurant. they have a nice patio outside, but I chose to sit inside amongst the Spanish wines, cured meats and the biggest paella pans I've ever seen. I was warmly greeted and offered a taste of their different wines before deciding on a tempranillo. They had a cute tapas menu where I got to check off my selections. I went with the cheese spread, Spanish meatballs, and the paella rolls. I really enjoyed all, but was hard pressed not to put in for five more orders of the paella rolls. My only regret is that I won't be in town for their paella night, which as I understand is Wednesdays and Fridays from noon on. Check their website for more details.
