Our first visit was coincidentally on a day their air conditioning was out of service. They did have several strategically placed fans to make it more comfortable than the 100 degree outdoors from which we had just come. The server greeted us warmly (in both aspects) and she apologized for the A/C situation. She made sure we were seated as comfortably as possible. She had a very positive presence despite our understanding that she certainly was not comfortable herself. She took her time and helped us choose our meal as she showed us on the menu which were the most popular selections. My wife chose the Cuban sandwich, I the Pan Con Bistec. We both enjoyed our sandwiches very much, though my wife, having had a bite of mine, preferred my sandwich as the better. The french fries included with the sandwiches did not look special, but we both voiced our opinions that the fries are fantastic! We will be back. read more

My husband loved every bit of the rice, sauce, pork, and potatoes. The topping on the cause for him was the extra crispy maduros. This place is pretty great. It's family-owned, which was obvious when I saw a mother checking in on her customers with a little girl in tow. :) Everyone was sincere and smiling, and working hard. This is a small unassuming place in Meridian that we found online, otherwise I'm not sure we would have noticed it. Luckily, though, we did find it! The food is all fresh, homemade and authentic. I'm not Cuban, but I sure do appreciate comfort food, and I can see how comforting this food must have been growing up. My husband decided to get deep into it and ordered the Picadillo a la Habanera. This is a beef dish in a seasoned tomato sauce with raisins and green olives. I know it sounds weird, but it's kind of over-the-top yummy! The raisins added a touch of sweetness, while the olives contributed a salty bite to the dish. We were pleasantly surprised by this combination. We also shared a very comforting soup that we finished happily, and I ordered Camarones al Ajillo, which is shrimp sautéed in garlic....lots of garlic. I'm a garlic lover, so I was on board, and it was very tasty! I'm not sure what the green side sauce/dressing was, but I definitely wanted to dip everything on my plate in it, lol. I really don't think you can go wrong at this place. The plates are nothing fancy in the way they look. My 1st visit to CCG was good. Service was a little slow, but the food was "okay". This visit, the service was quick, and the food was nothing like the 1st time. Granted I ordered a different entree, but ordered a mojito just like before had the same appetizer as before. The mojito tasted like they just poured in the rum added some lemonade and club soda and threw in the mint. The pork dish I ordered came with black beans and yucca. I thought it was fried yucca but it was steamed. Both the yucca and beans had no taste, terribly bland. The pork was good after I added some salt, if they actually marinate the pork they need to marinate it longer or put in more spices. The service was good though. Our last visit 2 years ago was pretty good. This time around , not so good. My wife and I wanted to try different meals this time around . The Arroz Vegetariano was my wife's choice. Sautéed peppers, broccoli, zucchini ,carrots and green beans. Served with yellow saffron rice and sweet ripe plantains (maduros). She said the zucchini had a sour taste and the rest of the veggies were cooked inconsistent. I wanted to try the Cubano sandwich. Roasted pork, ham, pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard on a Cuban style bread. The bread was very dry and hard. The pork was dry and had no flavor. I had to ask for mustard. Their was barely any on it to try and liven up the sandwich. Our waiter was not good . When he asked us if we wanted any drinks my wife just wanted water. I said the same. He said are you ready to order . We had sat down about 2 minutes. We said not yet. 15 minutes later he came back . Once our food was delivered the waiter never asked us how everything tasted. His assistant cleared our plates and gave us the check. Usually I would give a restaurant another chance. Not this establishment. read more

Due to my extensive travel history, I have built a very strong and picky tongue for authenticity. That being said, I can tell you Casablanca is the real damn deal. I'm about to tell you why. The entire menu at Casablanca is filled with what you'd find at a typical restaurant in Havana. I recognized many dishes that I've dined on and they were all delicious, so it was hard for me to make a decision. During my first visit I bellied up to the world-famous Sandwich Cubano (roasted pork, ham, pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard on a Cuban style bread). Man, I tell you, it was SPOT ON. Reminded me of my trip years ago when I had my first one. The meat was roasted to perfection, delivered a dynamite of flavor and was too damn good to stop eating! If you try one thing here, this is it! On another occasion I was served the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef in Cuban Creole sauce with onions and peppers. Served with white rice, black beans and sweet ripe plantains (maduros)). This also happens to be Cuba's national dish! Again, each bite took me back to Havana. Sweet, delicate and tender beef paired with fresh cooked rice and beans. The taste was outstanding. Boise lacks so many authentic cuisine but Casablanca reminds me that true food is there if you seek it. On another note, I absolutely loved our waiter both times. He was very kindhearted and humorous, took time to inform us of what each dish consisted of, which was super helpful for my very Americanized husband (nothing wrong with that - he just doesn't have the palate for authentic food like I do!). In a heartbeat, I recommend this to anyone who is tired of over-sweetened, sodium packed eateries that boast but fail to deliver genuine cuisine. What he suggested they brought me a plate that had like some chunks of cooked pork that was pretty dried out and flavorless. The plate also had a plantain which I enjoyed.
