Family run business. I love this place. I buy BBQ by the pound (or multiple pounds from them. They sell it refrigerated by the pound, which comes in handy because it is just me, my wife, and our 3 year old son. The latter two don't care for smoked meats very much because they have bad tastes I also really like that they make their own regional BBQ sauces. I'm Eastern North Carolina or Carolina Gold all the way as I like the savory more than the sweet, but they have Memphis style and some other sweet sauces for those that like that flavor. read more

Well BBQ Shack, you did not disappoint! My husband and I came in today, our first time in as we heard this was a hidden gem! Now, being from Texas I love me some good brisket! I sure got that! It was very tender and smoked as was the turkey! I enjoyed the pulled pork but still adjusting to the vinegar based bbq sauce y'all have up here, its not my personal fav but the meat itself was very tasty and tender! Ok I give them a four star because their BBQ was delicious. That's what they advertise for and that's what they are good at. With that said they can improve on their sides. The Mrs has the Sampler and it came with brisket, turkey, pull pork, she enjoyed the BBQ but she ordered green beans and Mac and cheese for her two sides. The green beans tasted straight from the can with sugar added, the Mac and cheese....well it should not be called that at all. They definitely need someone's grandmothers help with the sides. I had the rib platter with extra meat, baked beans and potato salad. Ribs were superb, delicious, seasoned perfect and can hold their own without sauce. The potato salad was store bought and straight from carton to plate add paprika. Baked beans had a little more attention than all the sides I tasted BUT they were not memorable at all. Again four stars because the BBQ was superb, next time I will just come for the meat, no sides. Until next time, this has been another OK Fatboy Adventure! read more

While heading to the nearby post office, a huge dot matrix sign taunted me, displaying "BARBECUE" in all caps. Suddenly, my car gravitated toward the Pool and BBQ Shack. They have $5 lunch specials which includes your choice of meat (pulled pork, brisket, ribs(?)) and two sides! A steal. I was able to get the "special" at 4pm too! I chose the brisket, baked beans, and collard greens, but they were out of greens so I chose the potato salad instead. The owner also gave me two dipping sauces: North Carolina sauce and barbecue sauce. Everything was yummy. The thin slices of brisket were flavorful and the sides were on par. I couldn't ask for more. I barely used the sauces, but they were fine too. The North Carolina sauce is similar to a honey mustard mix. Overall a great experience for a cheap lunch in the middle of nowhere. read more

The appearance makes it seem like it's an ex pool store and catering type of place... Welp, I'm glad it is not that. The BBQ here is above average. The service is well above average. Yesterday they had quite a crowd for lunch, three of us ordered and they still had our orders to us quite quickly! The prices are great, and although there's not much seating, there is some seating so it's not a "take out only" place. I've had the pulled pork sandwich and the sampler platter, each time with slaw and beans. I enjoyed every bit of it. The meats don't NEED sauces, but I always like to kick it up a notch. All four of the signature sauces, Texas BBQ, North cackalacky BBQ, Mustard base BBQ, and the hot sauce were quite delish. I wish they stayed open a little later for those nights the wife says "I don't know, but I don't feel like making anything.." Being a family run joint I understand why they don't, it'd just be nice. :D one evening I called ahead and let them know we'd be there right around when they were closing, no problem they said, they asked what we'd like and told us they'd have it ready when we got there. En route to the Outer Banks from DC, this was our pit stop. Probably the best BBQ I've had in a long, long time. We ordered the Mother load turkey sandwich, the pulled pork sandwich, side of mac and cheese for the toddler, side of coleslaw, and beans. The meats came with their own different style sauces and everything was slow roasted braised and assembled to delicious perfection. The meats were better than the sides, but they were still on-par with what southern BBQ sides should taste like, and the tot deemed the mac and cheese "yummy stuff!" Though it's definitely more of a take out place there's one 4-top table inside and a few stools plus some table tops on the porch. My only complaint is that there is no restroom, another reason to grab and go. Might be a little messy for the car so take stock of the paper towel supply. read more

After a 10 min drive I found a very inconspicuous looking converted home with an open sign and a screen door. However inside came the scents that you can only get from a home kitchen and one if the tiniest yet welcoming atmospheres I've ever been in. I had BBQ Ribs, collards, fried okra, hush puppies; my daughter had BBQ chicken, cuke/tomato/onion salad, baked beans, hush puppies. Portions were generous and well prepared. In fact was so much food we brought home enough for another meal. Still excellent after re-heating. My only concern was our server was very young and not as attentive as she could have been. I do understand that is was a busy night, but she did not have that many tables. She will learn and become an excellent server. We will return for more eat-in & take out. I'm glad we stopped in to try the food after seeing other reviews on Yelp. Nice place, clean and friendly staff. I got the sampler and Hubby got the big A's brisket sandwich. We both got mac and cheese and coleslaw for sides. Husband loved his sandwich and I really enjoyed the sampler ( pulled pork, smoked turkey and beef brisket). The sides were delicious and cornbread is yummy. My husband smokes meat here once in a while and I'm a pretty good cook too but the BBQ at the shack is something we will buy again and I liked their coleslaw and cornbread better than my own . 5 stars to this place, it initially was a little hard to find. The address makes Apple maps go to some neighborhood right behind it. I walked in as a first timer with two friends. The inside is small and very much the mom and pop barbecue restaurant that you would expect. The owner and his son were working and I was pleasantly surprised by how warm and welcoming and relaxed they were. I felt at home immediately. This restaurant is apparently locally renowned for their ribs as well as their brisket. Both of which were sold clean out by 3 in the afternoon. Another customer asked about that and the owner happily explained that he would much rather keep his food's quality up and not serve something that is no longer fresh. To that, I almost broke into applause. Definitely check this place out! You won't be disappointed!!! read more

This is not what I expected. First, it's not a shack but a pretty nice house. This is true Q. Cooked over real coals (Big Green Egg). It's well seasoned but not in the expected Eastern Carolina vinegar/pepper style. It was more subtle than that. The pork was moist & plentiful. The Coleslaw was excellent, light without a lot of Mayo. The cornbread was like cake. They appear to be a small operation so the hours of operation are not always set.
