Bangin BBQ Platter with collards and Coleslaw and cornbread

I saw this place mentioned on Yelp's Top 50 in Coastal Virginia and decided to finally give it a try! Didn't realize it is so close to where I work! Prices are very reasonable, and my BBQ Platter was delicious! The cornbread was the bomb! I did have to wait a bit but the food came out fresh and hot! The employee who runs the window was awesome, very friendly and engaging! Definitely going to go back again soon during my lunch break or maybe to get a pound to go for dinner!

I had lunch here a couple of weeks ago on a weekday arriving early at 11:00 a.m. They open at 10:00 a.m. Walking in I noticed they had no restrooms here and I wanted to wash my hands. The only option was a container of hand sanitizer on the counter. I used it but noticed that it was very diluted and wasn't sure as to its effectiveness. I ordered a MacDaddy brisket sandwich which is their largest at 6 oz. I added baked beans and cole slaw for sides with a drink. While waiting for my food which was only about 5 minutes, I noticed that this restaurant has limited seating both inside and out under the front patio. When the food arrived I went outside to eat. The sandwich was very good. Very good bread bun and meat. Quality taste for sure and I graded the sandwich at a 4. The beans were a 4.5 and the cole slaw a 4. I really enjoyed this meal and quickly determined that they know how to make very good BBQ here. I understand and agree with it's high ratings. They close most days by 5 p.m. Also the food here is reasonably priced.

It's sad to say that I found the best BBQ joint in all of Hampton Roads right before I move away. I'm such a dummy! I knew about The BBQ Shack (TBS) for quite some time, but I thought it was further away than it actually was. Today I realized they are only 20 minutes from my house! Suffice it to say, I will visit as often as I can until I leave. TBS is a tiny restaurant, offering a small menu and catering to mostly to-go clienteles, as they do not have many tables. The locally owned business, and who opened in 2010, consists of the owner, his daughter and her boyfriend. During my first visit, I got a chance to talk with the daughter and she was wonderful. I quickly realized why their 5-star average rating on Yelp continues to dominate in the BBQ world. Now, let's talk about their food! Here are my favorites: Top 3 Meats: 1) Brisket 5* 2) Ribs 4.5* 3) Pulled Pork 4* Not recommended: Turkey I've never been a big fan of brisket until I tried TBS's brisket. Man oh man--was that good! So moist, tender and flavorful! Highly recommend their brisket. The ribs were tender, smoky and tasty, especially when you add their delicious rib sauce. They're only available on Fridays so keep that in mind and go early! Their pulled pork is a bit unique compared to others; they use a vinegar sauce and a bit of heat. I've read that their turkey is great so maybe I was there on a bad day, but my turkey was kind of dry. Top 3 Sides: 1) Beans 5* 2) Coleslaw 4.5* 3) Green Beans 4* Honorable Mention: Macaroni and Cheese Not recommended: Potato Salad My first visit I got the beans and coleslaw. I thought both were great! Their beans are sweet with lots of black pepper (note: they use a lot of black pepper in their sides). I enjoyed their coleslaw as I'm pretty picky when it comes to my 'slaw, but I forget now what it tasted like. Sorry! Today I tried their Green Beans, and they were good--a hint of sweetness and black pepper, and maybe some vinegar? I was impressed with their mac and cheese because most places overcook their pasta. Their macaroni was perfect and the cheese sauce was nice and creamy. It was easy to tell that they use Velveeta (V). I know many people like their mac with V, but I'm not one of those. So, if you like the V, you will love their mac and cheese. If you're not a fan of the V, skip it. Their Potato Salad was probably my least favorite item on their menu. I just didn't like the flavors. Maybe a lot of dill? Whatever it is, I don't dig it. Lastly, let's talk about value. TBS has some amazing prices. I was shocked today when I ordered the Rib Platter for $6.99. It comes with 3 ribs (it doesn't sound like much, but they had a lot of meat on them and I was full), 2 sides and either a roll or cornbread. And the Sampler Platter comes with 3 different meats, 2 sides and either a roll or corn bread for $7.99. Seriously--I pay that at fast food restaurants! When it comes to outstanding food, great service and super value--TBS is a cut above the rest. If you haven't been to TBS, then get your derrière there now. I will be a fan for life even when I move away. Now my question is: do they ship? :-P P.S. Make sure you get the cornbread. Trust me!!!

Yelp raved about this place so of course, me loving BBQ, I had to check it out. The place is a small take out with only a few uncomfortable plastic picnic tables and plastic chairs to sit. So definitely a place for the to go orders. They were out of a lot of sides so what they did have is baked beans and Mac & cheese. Both were meh... I got the Turkey breast sandwich and that was AWSOME! Flavorful and not Salty, hubbies pull pork BBQ sandwich was great too. Will definitely be back

What can I say that hasn't already been said. My husband rarely bowls over with enthusiasm for bbq but he sure did today. He practically inhaled his Bang BBQ sandwich it was so good. 3 hours later and he's still oohing over it. My Mac Daddy trio was just as good. Everything tasted fresh and like bits of bbq heaven. The pulled pork slider had just a smidgen of heat which I normally dislike but the overall taste was delectable. I don't know how but one Friday I will taste the ribs. Probably have to call out of work but it will happen. I've always thought this place was permanently closed because every time I went by it was closed. I just didn't get there at their 4 hour window. Most definitely a place to visit. Ps, I had the brisket slider the next day. I nuked it for about 45 seconds and it was the best brisket I've ever had! The mac n cheese wasn't for me but the beans were yummy! I can't wait for our next visit.

I have been wanting to try this place for months ....And I finally was 15 minutes away from this spot on Friday ....I had to stop by and give the ribs a try. Ribs is one of my favorite foods!!! ( plus, I consider myself a BBQ or smoke rib expert!!..lol lol lol) I got my slab ribs to go. The smoked rib aroma took over the car... I had to taste them..OMG, OMG!! These ribs was perfectly season and grilled/ smoked!! These are the BEST EVER ribs in Virginia!!!! Kudos to The Grill Master!! Oooooo the barbecue sauce was on point! I requested my ribs to be without the sauce. Due to a lot of places pour extra sauce over the ribs and it takes away from the flavor of ribs. These ribs were so good ..I could eat them again, today. IF I had some left. My husband, also thought the ribs was perfectly done correctly!

Found this spot through Yelp and boy we're we glad. But if you're trying to eat lunch at 12 you might as well call it in and come pick it up. It's very small inside and around lunch the line is out the door. They have very fair prices and you can double the meat for cheap. I got the pulled pork platter which comes with 4 oz of BBQ and I doubled it for $3 more. It comes with 2 sides so I had to go with the Mac and cheese but it was pretty disappointing little flavor and watery. Their BBQ and the Carolina sauce they give with it was phenomenal, rrreeaallyy good and flavorful BBQ. The spicy BBQ sauce they had on the tables was excellent too. Will be back!

Great customer service wasn't sure what to get so they offered samples everything was great got the 3 meat platter. I actually loved the turkey also the corn bread is so soft and sweet. Banana pudding was also great I will definitely be returning read more

BBQ done right! Today I had a sampler plate that included brisket, pulled pork (minced) and smoked chicken. You can choose two sides and get a corn bread. I had collard greens and coleslaw. Brisket was amazing. Tender and still juicy and smoked just right. They use mesquite to smoke their briskets but they use just the right amount because the mesquite isn't overpowering. The pulled pork is mouth watering good. Seasoned perfectly and pairs well with any of their sauces they make. Lastly the smoked chicken was also fantastic. A great smoke and rub flavor resonates in each bite leaving you wanting more. (Kids ate most of it). The collard greens are done right but I found the slaw a bit sweet. We also got green beans, baked beans and mac n cheese. All were excellent but the mac n cheese stile the show. The kids wouldn't eat any other side after tasting it and left my 2 year old daughter dancing on the chair. Corn bread is moist and delicious also. Sweet tea is perfect. Not too aweet but just right. The only bad thing was the wait. I called ahead and was told 20 minutes but I ended up waiting about an additional 20 minutes inside the place for it. Not a big deal, just means their busy because the food is that good. Just call ahead and add about 10 minutes to what they tell you. Im so happy we found this place and we will be back again. Oh and on fridays they do ribs. read more

I love BBQ and have been to quite a few of the restaurants in the area. The BBQ Shack is my favorite. The Buster Boy with Cheddar Cheese is awesome. They have limited to no seating but if you love BBQ like I do, this place is the the best! read more

This is the worst BBQ I've ever had! I'm a huge BBQ fan and I got the 3 meat combo and couldn't eat it all. It wasn't too much food it just was terrible... I believe the brisket was sliced with a deli cutting machine.... geez Avoid at all cost if you have taste buds read more

Oh my goodness - literally!! We have gone by this little place for years and never really had a chance to stop. Yesterday we finally got that chance and it was just amazingly good. The brisket and smoked turkey were delicious, tender, juicy and flavorful. The mac and cheese would rival anything in any other restaurant for cheesiness and taste with perfect noodles and the Cole slaw was a wonderful accompaniment. Their BBQ sauce is a North Carolina style, and they have about another 6 options if you want another style. It is a small place and most people seem to get take out, but we ate inside and it was great. If you are looking for excellent, excellent Bar B Q, check out this wonderful delicious place! read more

Terrible, terrible BBQ. I got the sampler platter and was able to try three meats (Brisket, Pulled Pork and Turkey) along with two sides. Based on the appearance and taste, I am convinced that the meat was cooked previously and reheated in a microwave. If you are a fan of good BBQ, this is a place to avoid. read more

Mmmmm!!! Bang in' BBQ lives up to its name!! The green beans are off the chain - a little bit spicy. Get the coleslaw on the sandwich. YUM! The green beans (a slightly spicy kick) and potato salad are my go-to sides. I only wish the desserts were made in-house. read more

Stopped here randomly before an appointment with my husband because we were starving and saw it had good reviews. This place is delicious, affordable, and you truly feel like you're shopping small and supporting locals instead of a random chain. The pulled pork is delicious even without the sauce, but their famous house Carolina sauce is amazing. Will be dining here again. read more

You may want to call before you go to see if they closed during their advertised hours. I sure am glad I called before driving to their location. It has always been hard to eat here because of the hours. I finally got a chance to eat here only to find out they were not open during their business hours. I hope someday my schedule will allow me to eat and they are not closed. Update: love the food here. read more

This place is right across from Zino's and if you don't know what your looking for you may pass right by but is definitely worth the stop. Simply the best bbq I've ever had. The ribs are amazing, but served on Fridays only. The sides were amazing as well. I ordered the green beans and mashed sweet potatoes. The chopped bbq melted in my mouth and the sauce served with it was just amazing. Great customer service! These guys are the real deal. I will be back! read more

We stopped by the little yellow house on the corner on our way back from Cape Hatteras. The location is just off the highway and service was quick although I'm sure we arrived after the lunch rush. The brisket was tender with just a hint of smoke easily the best I've ever had. The sides we tried (baked beans, green beans, potato salad, sweet potatoes) were all very good. This was definitely a find for these weary travelers. read more

This place is amazing! I had the BBQ brisket with green beans and mac & cheese. The mac & cheese is so creamy. The green beans are so flavorful. The brisket was so tender and delicious, I probably ate it too fast. The cornbread was perfect. Not dry or too crumbly like others. Super moist and cake-like. I moved to Virginia Beach in 2013 and have been looking for a place that serves great barbecue ever since. I think I have found the place! My wife and I went there for lunch on Wednesday and was allowed to sample the turkey, pulled pork, and brisket prior to making our order. I ordered the sampler which included all three of those meats and two side items (macaroni and cheese and baked beans) for only $7.99. we ate our food on their patio out front. I would say that this is somewhat of a "hole in the wall" location, but don't let that deter you from going in. Just get the food to go and you will be delighted by some really great barbecue read more

After years of driving past this palce, I finally got a pair and decided to walk in. Not knowing what to expect or order for that matter, The staff was friendly and caring enough to serve me samples. The brisket is on point and the BBQ is on par with some of the best I have ever eaten. The smokey was also pretty good. For years I have been driving past this place wondering if the food was any good. About a year ago my wife and I finally decided to give it a shot. Everything they have on their menu is great. The brisket is to die for and the bbq is on point. Even the cole slaw hits a home-run. If you are in the Chesapeake (Deep Creek) area this is the place to get your bbq. A true hidden gem!! read more

I've tried tons of BBQ places around Hampton roads. This Shack is by far the best. BBQ sandwich is loaded and packed with flavor. It's got a great vibe to it with extremely friendly service. Prices are great and food comes out fast. If you haven't been here yet it should be on your list. read more

the food here truly is amazing. we stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. inside is small and mostly take out oriented. we tried the sampler and all of it was amazing, from the corn bread to the brisket. 8 highly recommend you stop in and try this place out, you will not be disappointed! read more

Great BBQ...great price point. I am very impressed. I had the BBQ platter with with cole slaw and baked beans. Good portion size for the price. I will return. The Carolina BBQ sauce is of the eastern variety which has a spicier sauce than western North Carolina. Thr flavor is good with just enough heat to add to flavor while not dominating the meat. Carolina BBQ is about the meat. Ok...that's about it. I will return and try something different in the near future. read more

This has been my go-to BBQ spot for years, and it's the first place I recommend to friends and family whenever they're craving good barbecue. It's about a 40-minute drive for me now, but honestly, I'll make that drive any day it's that worth it. It's more than just a restaurant to me at this point it's tradition. I liked the sauce, but I do wish the meat itself had more seasoning.

I am a very socially awkward person and do not handle unexpected moments very gracefully, so I probably reacted a little awkwardly. That part was on me. The rib was GOOD though. He was very kind about my reaction and even handed me a napkin. The whole staff was friendly, asking how my week was going and checking in to make sure everyone was happy. Even though it was busy, they clearly care about customer service. The food was great. The garlic and green onion sausage had so much flavor, and the bananamisu was the perfect sweet finish. I originally went in hoping to order the BBQ oxtail, but they were sold out within two hours of opening, which honestly says a lot about how good they must be. We didn't get any dessert but there was a woman there as we were checking out who raved about the cake slices there and told us she comes almost every day for a slice of cake. Best BBQ in Southeastern VA maybe in ALL of VA. Pork BBQ, Brisket, Smoked Turkey, Ribs(only on Fridays) are top notch. Sides are fantastic. Service is fast and friendly. Not the biggest place so don't expect room to bring the family and have a sit down meal but don't let that deter you. I try to eat here at least once a week. If you are ever in Deep Creek be sure to drop by and try the best BBQ you've ever had. Be sure to try the JohnBoy. P.S. Anyone giving this place bad reviews either has no idea what good BBQ is or was born without taste buds. Lol. read more

Called in for a huge order of sandwiches BBQ, Brisket, Turkey and Baked Beans to pick up. Everyone enjoyed their sandwich, except for the ones that had the Brisket. They said it was way too salty. I have ordered several times from The BBQ Shack and this was the one time complaint on the Brisket. The service was great and the people were friendly. Yes, I'd come back.
