We've been coming to Port Dover every few weeks for over ten years now, and yet it was only recently that we finally checked out The Beach House. It was a hot August day so the place was packed, but we managed to snag a table inside (which was better anyway, given the temperature outside). I'd heard that the perch is the thing to get, so I ordered the Panko Breaded Perch Dinner ("Hand-dipped in panko breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. Served with house made coleslaw and French Fries"). It arrived quite a while later and it's fine. The perch had obviously been sitting around a while, as it wasn't hot and kind of soggy. It's also weird that they're such small pieces, given the cost of the platter. But the fries were good, at least. It's obvious that the main draw at The Beach House is the ambiance and the view of the water. And yeah, that view was pretty great. read more

Best thing about this place is the patio view. When you sit at the patio you can see the lake, beach and sunset ud pretty spectacular. Staff is very friendly and kind. Establishment and washrooms are very clean. We had chicken wings, nachos, fish and chops to to with our beers. Overall the food was decent. We have been here a couple of times. The first time there was a bit line up for patio, second time no lineup and the line moves very fast too, depends on the time of day. They have several sitting areas on the beach, inside, as beach chairs as well. Relaxed atmosphere, no shirt, no shoes, no food though, keep in mind. Overall great experience, nice view, friendly efficient staff and decent food. read more

First time in Port Dover and went here with my in-laws for lunch. They knew it as Callahan's back in the day and this was their first time here in 5 years! The view from the patio which overlooked the beach and lake had to be some of the best views I saw in Port Dover. This was my first time ever ordering Perch for lunch and it wasn't bad! I started off with a bowl of Clam Chowder and you can tell it was fresh. The breading on the perch was cooked perfectly and fell off the fork as soon as you picked it up and the fries were crispy. Waitstaff was very polite and quick. The environment is very tourist like with lots of views and foot traffic in the area. The view of the lake sunset was phenomenal. Waitstaff suggestions on food were great the loaded onion rings, steak, and sweet potato fries were delicious. Would highly recommend if in the area. read more

Callahan's Beach House has very mixed reviews on Yelp. I decided to give the place the benefit of doubt when I came here with a group of 6 people on a Saturday evening. The place was not too full and we managed to get a table on the patio where the view was very nice. However, we were seated towards the end of the patio where there must have been a wind tunnel or something because it was EXTREMELY windy. Almost unbearable. The restaurant has a policy where they can't guarantee that you can be reseated indoors once you've been seated on the patio, which is fair enough but please do something about your patio situation. The table on the edge gets way too windy. We had to get blankets out of our trunks to keep warm and it only went downhill from here. We ordered some nachos to start, the nachos weren't too bad but it was made up of the weirdest ingredients. There was lettuce in the nachos, I have never seen that in my whole life. I ordered the seafood fettuccini or something. I don't remember what it was called but it was basically frozen seafood medley on creamed noodles. It was absolutely revolting. I have never had pasta that tasted so bad in my life. How can a restaurant even serve food like this? A third grader could make food better than this. I really wanted to give this place one star based on the seafood pasta but I decided to give it two because the view was good and the nachos weren't too bad. I wouldn't recommend coming here but if you do, don't order the seafood pasta. read more

Drove almost 2 hours for a perch lunch. Food was good and we wanted to enjoy a Rickard's Red with. Pints arrived with a LIME WEDGE!! What? Why? Who said that would be alright? Are we American? Small restaurant with thriving business but wasting citrus fruit in the water (again, WHY?) and adding it to perfectly good beer when it was not requested or deemed necessary would be a good way to save resources. We will be back but will request no fruit in beverages. read more

Now Simply Called 'The Beach House' Nothing to do on a cool winters day? Do what I did, grab a few friends and head down to The Beach House in Port Dover, formerly Callahans Beach House. This newly named hot spot is the place to go for fresh and locally sourced fish. Not only is this rustic haven for the #beachbum you'll find all kinds of folks here dining in the various settings here. Being a big fan of local fish species and in the mood for some great seafood. I started with a very palatable take on Mussels - They were fresh and not one of them didn't open, the broth had a great depth of flavour and was not overpowering the flavour of the mussels. Next was one of my favourites!! Seafood Chowder !! Now for an interesting fact, both my Mother and my Grandfather were ChowderGurus and although they are both not here anymore, I pay them homage by weeding out bad chowders everywhere!! So this chowder had a very good base, not too thick and not curdled, it had lumps of fresh fish, and the base had a great balance!! This was a good chowder!! Next up was the main course and for that, I choose the broiled Perch. This dish is great for those who don't want the fish or sauced and it is served gently sautéed veggies and a most wonderful, light and refreshing Jasmine rice Sprinkled with diced fresh vegetables. The pieces of Perch we're pleasantly plump and not overcooked, fresh and very good. The fish was fall off the fork good !! This meal certainly hit the spot and it was so worth the drive to Port Dover. read more

Beautiful location! Patio seating right by the water was fantastic on a nice sunny day. Unfortunately, once the food came out we had to fight off wasps and seagulls. The restaurant did their best, setting a pitcher of pop by the water to keep the wasps away, but I don't think it was 100% effective. Food seems to be hit and miss. The perch dinner and perch on a bun were absolutely delicious 5 stars. However, the clam chowder was extremely salty. read more

Good little beach-side restaurant featuring local caught fish such a perch, steaks, sandwiches, and salads. The outdoor seating offers excellent views overlooking the beachfront. We had fish tacos and a couple pints of beer. The tacos were made from local perch, lightly breaded and deep fried. A bit of jalapeño for a kick. Flour tortillas. Came here for a weekend lunch and the lineups for outdoor seating looked pretty long so we decided on sitting indoors. We still got a nice view of the beach and palm trees so no complaints. We had the snack size knectal style perch with fries and a special- the Greek burger. Food- the perch was delicious, however I wasn't really a fan of the knectal style batter.. I would recommend the Panko crust if you're not huge on thick batter on fish. Fries were a good portion as well. The Greek salad burger was a bit messy, but the party was delicious. The food took a while compared to big city restaurants, but we weren't in a hurry so didn't mind. The service was good and the servers were friendly and always smiling. I would definitely recommend this place and come back again if I visit port Dover. read more

Solid place to enjoy a casual meal overlooking the beach. The place has prime real estate with a long patio with lots of seating by the water. The menu is pretty extensive, with pub classics, salads plus some vegetarian options clearly marked. I came in a group of 6 and we all either got burgers or fish -- safe bets at a place like this. My cheeseburger was okay, just a tiny bit too dry. Garden side salad was pretty standard. I tried a bite of the fish and chips (perch) and they were tastier. They came with a large serving of coleslaw, fries, and tartar sauce. The snack size is probably adequate for most people unless you are really hungry. Service was friendly and efficient. Also, for some reason 2 out of 6 forks at our table were all bent out of shape? I have no idea what they are doing to their forks over there... My husband and I went to Port Dover for Friday the 13th. We enjoyed walking around looking at all the motorcycles. We walked all the way to the beach and decided to get some food at this restaurant. Even though the town was crowded they were able to get us a table quickly. The view was great and we enjoyed watching the boats as we had our meal. We split a clam chowder, lobster and crab dip and a perch dinner. All the food was good and we washed it down with some cold beer. The service was prompt. I would give 4 stars but the service was terrible. I get it, a bunch of college kids working for the summer, but these servers were extremely inattentive and clueless. It was 30C degrees so while dining on the (very nice, beach side) patio we shouldn't have to beg for water, not to mention flagging down for cutlery and the bill. I recommend the mussels and perch. Fries, not so much. The vibe was fun and the line to get an outside table moved quickly. If you're in the land of tramp stamp tattoos and Du Maurier cigarettes (Port Dover) this is a great place to check out. Hopefully your service is better than mine! read more

My boyfriend & I eagerly drove 30 minutes to get to Callahan's Beach House for supper. We usually like Callahan's and were looking forward to grilled salmon and the baked Brie appy only to discover to our disappointment they now have a "summer menu" and both items were removed. The server told us Callahan's Beach House had opted for fast food they could fry or prepare quickly. Well - In that case we should have just went across the street to Knechtel's or up the street to Willy's! Anywho, we decided to try their "pan-fried" herb perch, being told it was "grilled" as we did not want regular 'ol deep-fried fish n chips. Wow I wish I had taken a pic to show you because it was pathetic! The fish portion was SO SMALL and it looked 'steamed' and was sitting on top of a mountain mashed potatoes, which literally took up half my oval-shaped plate. The other half of the plate was filled with steamed vegetables. Honestly the best thing about my meal was a couple of bites of my boyfriend's coleslaw! The potatoes tasted like instant potatoes or 'sour', which I only ate 1/3 of after dumping a bunch of gravy on them to conceal the flavour to no avail! Suffice it to say, Callahan's Beach House is known to be a fish house that is elevated above the fast fish fry places that are synonymous with a day at the beach, but this in no longer the case. After going to the Callahans Beach House for years recently spending many evenings, in the chairs on the sand. Very lovely feet in the sand, a bite to eat and a glass of wine watching the sunset. having a a family member join me. Then inviting a few Dover friends over as well. we pulled up 2 extra chairs and we were told we couldn't sit together because other prople needed to sit there were many empty chairs along the ropes for others we just wanted to sit together get some food and drinks. we already met a friend who was eating and didnt have utensils. We were rudely told we wouldn't be served and if we didn't split up the chairs. We were there to have a nice time with friends. how rude.....Dont go to the Beach House with your friends or family members cause you CAN'T sit on the brach together. They said pay your bill and go somewhere else. Server and Manager both un professional. we are now enjoying ourselves together at Erie Beach Patio with awesome service! delicious food. Oh and all the money we spent at Erie Beach could've went into the pockets of the Beach House. Good Luck we won't be back!! read more

Took my mother here for the first time to cheer her up after the passing of her father, What a mistake. It wasn't the food or the atmosphere that let us down it was the service. We were seated promptly in the sunniest spot and then ignored. It wasn't super busy for a Friday evening. The couple after us and family after them got seated and served drinks right away. By the time their food came out we had been waiting for service for almost 30 minutes. I broke down and pulled one of the waitresses aside and asked why we hadn't been served yet. It wasn't her section but she did her best to remedy the situation. The only difference between us and the people who had came in after us is that we didn't have a man with us. And my mother reasoned it was the reason we were not being served, But before we left two ladies in there late 20's came in and got served right away. I am a plus size woman, I am aware that I was the fattest person there. It has never been a issue for me before, but I guess the young man who was in charge of our section felt incapable of treating us like everyone else there. It was the worst dinning experience of my life. If the staffs motive is to ignore larger people, and give them zero service so that they never come back again, then good job mission accomplished. read more

People like to defend Callahan's saying 'You come for the atmosphere, its beach front!'. Well this is the exact reason that makes me despise this place even more! You have THE MOST PRIME PIECE OF BEACH FRONT PROPERTY IN DOVER, you could have the most awesome restaurant if you actually cared about being a good restaurant instead of ripping off gorbys who want to have the primo view. Went on labour day long weekend so we expected a bit of a wait. 20min to get a table, but there were 12 of us so not bad. Went downhill after this. Clam chowder luke warm at best, ask to heat it up and came out half hour later still luke warm. Then waited 2 hours more to get our food and the fries were freezing cold, I think they just took them out of the bag and dumped them on our plate. Didn't even bother with the perch. Just left. The waitress said it was the busiest day of the year what did we expect! Ummm it's Port Dover, I rode motorcycle that day and you expect me to believe labour day is your busiest day. Get a grip, even if it was, it's a restaurant, they should be serving hot food in a timely manner. never ever again. EVER! read more

Before you skip the actual review, please note that my 4-star rating is based on the overall experience and atmosphere. The service itself was pretty good. The place was pretty busy which I found a little surprising considering we went there on a Monday afternoon. With this said, we waited for about 20-minutes which wasn't too bad. We had a gorgeous view of the beach and the lake plus it was the most perfect day, weather-wise. The menu is quite overwhelming but you are given many different and unique food items so I guess the price was pretty reasonable. [Starters] Calamari - Crispy fried calamari (just the rings) served with what tasted like a soya sauce, vinegar and garlic base sauce. If you're Filipino then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Thought it was an interesting choice of dipping sauce and I personally didn't mind it. The serving size itself though was a bit of a disappointment as it cost (my friend) about $10. With that size, the charge should be no more than $7.50/$8. It didn't even come with the tentacles so was it even made with fresh squid? 3.5/5 [Main] Canadian Grilled Salmon - Served with a variety of sides but I chose the mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes with gravy. If you're thinking of the mashed potatoes, definitely get the gravy. Not because the gravy was great (it was actually quite bland) but because the potatoes were pretty dry. Can't really tell if they're real or not but I think they were real potatoes. Regardless, it was very bland so I put a lot of pepper on it. Vegetables were good. Salmon itself, well I was expecting a larger filet but with the amount of potatoes (2 scoops) and vegetables, you won't be hungry after. Even though the salmon wasn't as large as expected, it was grilled perfectly. I was actually very happy with the salmon itself. 4.5/5 (this would've been a 5 if the salmon was bigger). Would I go back? Sure. I'd love to try out other things on the menu. Plus, you can't beat those views! read more

This restaurant is supposed to have an amazing view of Lake Erie, and it does...if you can get it. We went on a Sunday afternoon to Port Dover for the first time. We were surprised by how much of a "beach" town it is; I thought for a moment that we were in Florida! We looked for parking, which was sparse, and we eventually found it - for $20.00. Yikes. The restaurant has a patio, which has a gorgeous view, but there was a line-up of people waiting to be sat on the patio, and we were told you would be seated quickly inside. We went in and were sat fairly quickly, at a table near the hostess stand. So unless you are willing to stand in line and wait for 45 min, you probably aren't going to get a nice view. We ordered the perch and the chicken sandwich. The perch dinner was fine, but the chicken sandwich was all bun, no chicken. I looked behind us at the hostess stand, and there was a huge line-up, and this was at 4:00 in the afternoon. Most people seemed dissatisfied. Overall, I wish we had just stuck to one of those small eateries that you can order at a window - they are located all over Port Dover. Our bill ended up being around $45.00 with tax. Next time, I think we'll just hit up Willie's and take our food and sit on the beach. read more

Its the beach front patio. That's why you go here. It's THE Port Dover experience. The food? Meh. The menu is HUGE, and has everything from sirloin steaks, big salads, to pasta. What Dover is famous for: fresh fish, specifically PERCH. I got a 'snack size' fish (3 small meaty pieces of perch) & chips, which came with a generic but tasty enough lightly mayo based coleslaw, 2 white buns (no idea why) and tarter sauce. The tarter sauce was NOT good. It was a sweet mess. Thank goodness the fish is fresh and flavorful enough to eat on its own. It was lightly battered in a beer batter, and it was amazing. It was by far the star on the plate. It was large enough to share with my lunch guest. Also got a piña colada; which arrived at my table with a dollop of whipped cream on it. Interesting ;) Tasted pretty good. Again, nothing special. The plastic disposable glasses kinda add a different kind of casualness to the place, but hen again, you're sitting on cheap patio furniture so ..... The very few girls (there were only 2 the Monday afternoon I was there) who work the patio hustle, which is impressive, and still tend to everyone efficiently and remain calm and friendly. Even during the week, expect to wait for an outside patio table. But trust me, it's worth it for the view and breeze off the water. read more

Well I went here last Saturday and I certainly have mixed reviews. We loved the location of the patio with a view of the lake and beach, it seems to be the best in the area, so we waited in line on the wooden ramp for a table on the outdoor patio. There was only two of us so we took the table for two along the window, we still had a good view of the lake and beach but here was no umbrella and the sun was beating down on us. Further, a seagull on the roof started crapping on our table, real nice huh? Needless to say, we would never sit there again. The waiter was nice to us but once the crap came, we were out of there. The beer was about $6.00 a bottle. The rest of the menu was priced reasonable for a beach front restaurant but we never ordered food so I can't comment on it. The plates did indeed look like having big portions from what we saw. There was a foul smell coming from somewhere near or below the patio--not cool. I guess my advice for you is that if you're going to go there, make sure you get a table with an umbrella to protect you from the sun and seagulls! read more

As everyone else has pointed out the patio and the views are the main draw. We couldn't get a spot on the patio, as there were a couple of unbused dirty tables and no sign of any patio staff to do so. We found a spot inside as we were only a party of two, but they were telling groups of more than four that it was a 45 minute wait. I will take any chance I have to eat fresh perch, and it was very good, although I could have had the exact same perch at the food stand across the road. The sides were average. Service seemed a bit spotty, there were a few tables around us that were quite unhappy with both the service and the food, but we didn't have any complaints. This is a restaurant for the middle of the road tourist crowd, but the views and patio are worth stopping in for. read more

Great Summer Patio Looking out on Port Dover Beach and Lake Erie. Chose a table that is covered or has umbrella when its sunny and hot. Port Dover beach and landscape reminds of Waikiki or Manhattan Beach near L.A. with its long white sand beaches and blue sky for nearly as far as the eye can see. Callahans is great place to eat lunch or dinner drink some beers enjoy the beach and water views. The salads we ordered very good fresh tasty and satisfying. read more
