11/9/23 Baffled by all the bad reviews still. I ordered an old lady meal of hot turkey and gravy with filling and two sides. I chose potato pancakes and the garden salad which was fresh and crispy. I believe the price was only 14.99. The turkey was very tasty and so was the gravy with three generous slabs of turkey. Service was friendly. I will definitely go back for sure! read more

We passed by this dinner on our way to pick up pastries. On our way back we stopped in. This location is easy to see and get to. They have plenty of parking. The decore is old medievalish look. We were motioned to sit in a back booth. Soon after came the waitress with menus and water. Then another waitress who wasn't personable came by to see what we would drink. She quickly brought our beverages and wanted our order but we weren't ready so she scurried off. We finally ordered eggs Benedict with turkey bacon substituted for Canadian bacon, home fries. My companion ordered western scramble and asked for cheddar cheese mixed in, side order of sausage and bacon. He said the coffee was weak. He also didn't get the scramble with cheese mixed in it was only broiled on top. The eggs were too dried out. My Benedict was cooked perfect!!!!! The hollandaise sauce was good but I like it a bit more lemony. Turkey bacon was beautifully crisp. I loved the seasoned home fries! I had some of my companion's toast but either the butter is margarine or the butter was not good quality because it wasn't melted on the toast. It just hung onto the toast instead of melting into it. As our waitress approached our table to drop off the bill she made a comment on her favorite food. It was surprising since she was so short before. We think she was trying to be nice for a good tip. Not sure why this diner has only three stars! We stopped by after a stay in Tamaqua after the fall foliage festival in Jim Thorpe for Sunday breakfast. The diner is a classic with the old timey look and feel; it's been around forever. The food was very good -- I got the build your own omelette with hash browns and wheat toast. We also shared pumpkin pancakes for the table, which came out to be a huge stack of three, that was very good! One star off just because it took a while for the food to come out, but our sever was nice and took the time to answer any questions. read more

Classic, All-American diner with a cute theme- great to enjoy if you are in Hometown. So much better and more memorable than your typical chain place, and about as affordable as anywhere you could eat. We went for breakfast last week, and while we've been there before and expected the usual decent food and shitty service, this waitress was beyond rude and unsanitary. (She had Multicolored short hair) First, the food order was wrong and she forgot half of it in the kitchen for most of our meal. We also had to keep getting her attention to get the rest of our food, which was very odd because we were one of only 2 tables in the entire restaurant. Second, she barely looked where she was putting the food down, making us have to take our own plates. And the absolute gross kicker was she was chewing her gum like a cow chewing her cud. I am still perplexed by some of the bad reviews for this place. I visited last year and almost didn't go because of the reviews. Glad I went. Great breakfast and service. But, hey, that was one visit, one plate of food. Recently returned while visiting Tuscarora State Park. Brought my family this time. We all enjoyed. I had some "hillbilly" breakfast special that consisted of eggs any style with sides of homemade beans, cornbread, fat sausage links, and cheesy grits. My wife had eggs with toast, Canadian bacon and awesome potatoes. We both had coffee. Kids had Belgian waffles with some breakfast meat sides, juice. Whole thing came to $30. Left $10 tip for the service with a smile. Will definitely be back. Again. Classic diner experience. read more

My first impression based on appearance was that this place has not been cleaned or updated in 30 years. Its suppose to have a maritime theme - which translates to a few boat signs from a garage sale on the walls. The booths and chairs need replacement. Now onto the food... just plain nasty. I started with a bowl of cream soup that looked like vomit. It actually looked like someone puked in a bowl. And it was cold. My main course was pasta and meatballs. The sauce was straight out of the Prego can. As for the meatballs... frozen and heated in the microwave. Like eating sponge balls. My friend had a hamburger and it was on a one of those small buns that you buy at the grocery store. As for the desert we had cake and it was soooo dry it was like eating chalk. $40 for 2 people to eat. They charge $8 for a salad... in Hometown, PA !?!? $8 salad forget it. Aparently they think they are located in Los Angeles. The bathrooms are also gross. They are using packing tape as insulation around the windows and it was like 50 degrees in the bathroom and my ass froze to the toilet seat. Not to mention the sewer smell. Waited forever for 3 burgers and a philly cheese steak. Burgers were dry, no ketchup on the table (for which I had to track down the waitress for another bottle) was only offered/asked about refills once and again had to run the waitress down for 2 ice teas. I so wanted to give more stars, but the service prevented it. First off, we waited to be waited on for a good 20 mins. I had to flag someone down. We placed our orders (my son and I), and then we waited about 40 minutes for some eggs and pancakes. Unacceptable. We were not even compensated for our troubles. My food was very good, my sons pancakes were far from fluffy, they were tough discs that resembled a silver dollar pancake. Maybe they were having a bad day, it was kinda busy, but that should not be an excuse. I do not think I will be back to this establishment. :-( read more

Decent diner depending on when you go. Don't expect great service if you choose to go on a Sunday when church lets out. I've been here many times and have only ever came for breakfast. I have found I get the best service when seated at the booths at the front along the breakfast bar. Every time I have sat in the dining room the service isn't as good and the waitresses tend to forget about you - unless you're a giant party. This visit was good because it wasn't crowded and our waitress was nice and quick. My mom and I both got the Eggs Benedict with home fries - really yummy and came out fast. You can really taste the butter in the hollandaise. Homes fries are tasty too, I always request onions with them. It's no frills, but the food is good. I must give full disclosure that I have been coming to this place since I could fit ON the table-- literally-- in a baby carrier. Whenever I get back to Hometown, the visit starts and finishes with the Beacon. The Greek influence of the owners are apparent throughout the menu-- the Greek French Toast is a treat in the morning, the Spanikopita and Stuffed Grape Leaves are great appetizers. The Moussaka is homey and comforting, the Baklava is rich and decadent (I tend to stay away from that for the sake of my waistline though!). Breakfast is served all day. Amazing in and of itself and I have done breakfast for dinner on several occasions. Breakfast does admittedly have more of that diner feel to it, but they're big portions at great prices. I recommend getting the home fries deep fried with onion. Their Belgian waffles are savory and my dad is always a sucker for the pancakes that literally go to the edge of the plates. The waitresses are on point, have the right touch of sass, and know the menu well. During lunch-- you really can't go wrong with the burgers. They have a wide variety of club sandwiches and modernized their menu a few years back to include really fresh quesadillas (a wonderful pico de gallo really brightens/lightens a dish that is essentially cheese, meat, and a tortilla), wings, wraps, etc. Their salad bar has a fantastic Greek vinaigrette and one of the few places in the area that know what Garbanzo Beans are and why they should be on a salad bar! Also don't forget a few chunks of feta cheese!! Dinner-- Here's where the Beacon sold me and keeps me coming back. HANDS DOWN I recommend any of the broiled fish dishes. I'm big on the broiled Haddock, Trout, or Salmon. If they have the special of the Cajun Potato Crusted Salmon topped with Sauteed Peppers & Onions-- do yourself a favor and just put down the menu and order it. Sauteed spinach & garlic is a great side dish (just go light on the oil!). Pork Chops are a big portion, so be prepared to be a big eater or be ready for a take home container. I'm a huge fan of the Calamari Rings for an appetizer, and their Cajun Fries come with a zesty remoulade for dipping. Desserts-- They used to have this amazing Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake that was to die for. I don't see it as much. It was very dense and moist. I never order chocolate cake when I eat out, but when the Beacon has this cake-- I do. The rice pudding is also very good and they always have a wide assortment of pies. All in all, this is small town dining done well. Sundays after church are packed, so be prepared to get their early or wait. read more

Did not bother to check up on how we were doing, and provided no status update on our food. My son and I were looking for something mid-afternoon after a long drive. We stopped here for the first time. It wasn't busy, service was quick and friendly. We both ordered the Blazin Burger and Gravy a fries. What a home run! The burger was fantastic. It was cooked a perfect medium as requested, the meat was delicious even without the hot buffalo sauce and jalapeños. I liked the combo of sauce, peppers and cheese more than expected. The fries were perfect and the gravy, served on the side so as not to make soggy fries, was delicious. Add two drinks and it was only $21 before tip. Now I realize it's not a fine dining establishment, it's a diner but it was clean, everyone was pleasant, the food was good and priced reasonably. For a diner, five stars. read more

When in the area, I always try to come here for Sunday breakfast. Their hot cakes are of very good quality and the workers are friendly. I like being able to buy a coffee with refills for only $1.25, which is half what many restaurants charge. Although this is a popular spot, I have not had to wait long for a table. I did find it unusual that their salad bar is set up so early, because if I were to have dinner here, I wouldn't want to eat something that had been left out all day.
