Local ice cream/ coffee shop in a little sailing town in NC. Basic but they carry so much ! Bagels, pastries, smoothies, iced and hot beverages. Of course a variety of ice cream. I was quite impressed with huge drinks menu, so much variety and flavors. We went with ice cream in a nice sunny spring day. I had the espresso chip in a cup and my friends had butter pecan on a cone. Nice creamy and full of flavor. I loved how much coffee flavor was on mine and the chocolate chips were nice and thick . My friends loved their buttery creamy ice cream too. We sat outside and enjoyed the view of the water and the boats. Great service and they have plenty of seating inside and outside. What a cute cafe in the middle of town. The decor inside and out is very interesting and inviting. The cafe offers many different coffee and ice cream options. The staff was very friendly (the one girl who was working). Tables were distanced and everyone who entered was required to wear a mask. We were able to quickly order inside and then enjoy our frozen coffee drinks outside on the patio that overlooks the water. We both ordered the frozen bean for a cool down caffeineited drink on a hot summer afternoon. DELICIOUS! I got the mocha flavored and my friend ordered the vanilla. When we slurped them down, there wasn't a drop left. The frozen bean was exactly what we needed. If I'm ever back in town, I will surely stop back at The Bean to try their coffees or ice creams. read more

We had a hard time finding anywhere for coffee in town but we decided on this place. The girl working wasn't unfriendly but she wasn't friendly either. The place also had an unsettling smell. I know that they specialize in coffee rather than food but the bagels they have just come out of the fridge and are thrown in a toaster and the cream cheeses are prepackaged. My sister ordered a smoothie and seemed to enjoy it. I got an iced latte with almond milk. It wasn't bad coffee but it definitely wasn't the best i've ever had. I would be willing to give this place another shot sometime I think. read more

It seems to me that it would be hard for anyone to have anything bad to say about this place. They have a great location overlooking the harbor in Oriental, they serve up some tasty Ice Cream (and other goods I haven't tried) at a fair price, and from all accounts the owner is a great guy. For my part, I simply partook in two scoops of birthday cake Ice Cream served in a cup while sitting outside looking at boats. The ice cream was good, it was cheap, and I loved the view. Great place for coffe and pastry, very dog friendly, a dog named taco came to counter and got his free freshly made biscuit greeted everyone on the porch took a drink and walked on down the sidewalk. Also have ice cream. read more

I've been to The Bean before but this particular visit I enjoyed a great vanilla latte. The flavor was spot on, very, very good. I didn't like the lack of music. It felt a little uncomfortable at times and I had the added benefit of a friend to talk to. It's rather small inside and so more than 2 conversations going on can be a little overwhelming. Great morning stop for several choices of blended and unblended coffees along with fresh bagels and muffins. They also sell breakfast sandwiches, but the ingredients are frozen and then nukes before being assembled on your choice of breads. This place is quiet on weekdays and bustling on the weekends as you might expect in a sailing town. If you take your coffee black as I do, ask for two coffee ice cubes to either cool it down to a drinkable temperature or a whole cupful to make a non-watered-down iced coffee. read more

This is a cute place that overlooks the water and has a nice coffee-shop vibe, where you could study/do work (maybe when covid-19 takes a seat). The staff is courteous and fast. My only complaint is that I do not like the coffee - I've gotten a few variations by now and I have not been very impressed. The only thing I like about it is that the ice cubes are with coffee and do not distill the taste. The food (mostly home-baked cookies, muffins, etc.) is also not the greatest. Otherwise, it's a great spot to visit when you want to chill somewhere for half an hour. read more

I love the bean so much!! The only issue I've ever had with it was the staff. One day I went in and placed my order along with my friends. After all my friends got their orders I still hadn't gotten mine. Another group of people came, in ordered, got their order, then left. Finally I went up to ask the girl who was working if my order was coming up soon. She said she forgot and would make it now. I was patiently and happily waiting when the other worker who was male approached me. He was very upset that I had "talked to his friend that Way" and I was very confused. I'm not one to argue so I just apologized but it made me not want to come back. I really love the bean but that incident made me feel uncomfortable with the staff. I go there every summer though so I hope to keep the tradition up. read more

This is probably my forever favorite coffee shop. On my trips down from Raleigh, I always make time to visit The Bean at least once a day. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, the coffee is seriously very good, and the ambiance is so warm and inviting. I love to just sit and have a nice cup of coffee and look at the water. Everyone that comes in is very friendly. Several times I've found myself in a conversation with a complete stranger, and we have a lot in common. It's a great place to go when you just want great coffee and a good break from life. read more

Hats off to The Bean for getting it right! On a recent trip to Oriental, I went to the Bean for just a cup of coffee. It was very busy, but they had the foresight to have coffee and cups ready and waiting for folks like me who just want coffee, no food, no special cuppa, frappe, latte, etc.......I did not mind waiting in line to pay since I was happily sipping on a very good cup of coffee. OK, as a sailor I love this place. I love the whole town of Oriental for the same reason. They take the sailing world serious as the town with more boats registered than people living there(or something like that). And almost everyone in this must stop shop in Oriental is wearing a shirt that says something about sailing or is wearing foul weather sailing gear. The town is so small that you can see most of it in a few minute drive and there is a boat in every yard(not necessarily working and not necessarily just 1 boat). In a 3 hour visit we stopped at the coffee shop twice. 1st for a good cup of Coffee before we looked around and had lunch and then a second time after lunch at Toucans for a scoop of ice cream. Good coffee and ice cream! Good service. And as a sailor I really appreciated the attitude of the location and the town. Every time I have been to Oriental I have been to the Bean. Can't think that it will be otherwise. Great place to hear the sailing stories or lament bad weather keeping folks from sailing! See you next time I am in town! read more

Great iced mocha. Made with frozen coffee ice cubes so the drink doesn't get diluted as the ice melts. Brilliant! Ice cream and some pastries also available. The place is small but air conditioned and clean with a pleasant staff. There are a few chairs on the porch facing the marina. read more

This is my second visit to The Bean. The first visit was a few weeks ago (the weekend before memorial day weekend), and my experience was awesome. I had the best caramel latte ever. My husband and nephew had mocha bean freezes, and they loved them! Today was a bit of a let down. My latte was sour, but the barista happily made another. It was better, but still didn't taste as well as my first visits latte. My husband and nephew said their mocha bean freezes were not as good/sweet. My husband described his mocha freeze as coffee flavored water. I will give them another try though. read more

Lived just outside Oriental, N.C. last winter for 3 months and visited the Bean quite a few times. Always had a great cup of coffee, and being a coffee snob, I know a good cup. The Baristas were always very friendly and nice. Now that I'm back in Maine, I miss the place! Excellent!! read more
