Amazing burgers! The 1lb burger is great if you want to share or are a big eater. Staff were great. Definitely will visit again.

I would have given 4 stars had the server informed us of a 2 meal special going on. Instead we paid $10 more for nearly the same order. It's one of those places that nickel and dime you for everything which ticks me when you're already paying a high price for an ala'cart burger. I asked for extra onion yet barely got any but was charged extra. Hubby asked for extra grilled onion which you could slightly see but come on, extra means generous and when you're paying extra please be generous! I asked for extra sauce ( surprised no charge!) but it still wasn't drippy. I will same overall the burger was a tasty burger and the buns were seriously like a fluffy cloud, incredible. The fries were fine, onion rings better. For nearly $40 it was OK but should have been more memorable at that price. read more

Went out of our way to stop by here on our way to Lake Cushman. It does take a min to get the food but I think they make everything fresh and there's a constant stream of customers. Lots of seating inside and outside and a cute small town vibe! I'd go back here on our next trip to the lake :) read more

First off, great service. Coming in as a visibly genderqueer person I often feel anxious going to a new small town eatery, I was met with nothing but respect and kindness. The staff were efficient and happy to offer suggestions. The food was great. I got the chicken tenders basket with curly fries and everything was perfectly crisp, nicely seasoned and the chicken was really juicy. My partner got a double burger with fries and were very happy with it. The prices are great and they even have a drive through window! I would recommend this place over fast food any day. read more

Good size double bacon cheese burger but a little dry, and spendy ($14.50). Needs some mayo. Need to bring back the burger sauce used by the previous owner. Fries just ordinary McDonald's type. The service and quality has gone into the toilet the past 6 mo. We kept thinking it was just a bad day, and tried again multiple times. Food had been cold several times it frequently takes a long time even with call in. Typically we get deluxe burgers/fries. has Today we call in and they said 15 minutes. We arrived and then waited an additional 25 minutes for total 40 minute from the time we called. And they were not busy. Our friend was in line the and someone drove up to the window and the lady asked him to wait while she took the drive up order. Been following on Facebook and was in the neighborhood and hungry so we had to give it a try. Service is five stars. Very friendly and helpful counter staff. Took the order for the three of us and we anxiously waited. Soon our lunches arrived. Delicious burger. No skimping on the meat and toppings. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger, fries and a chocolate shake. This cost me $17.19 and that included. $2.00 tip. The restaurant is so clean, staff are friendly and best of all the food was delicious. The bun was even heated. If you want to have a gooey and delicious burger served with hot fries and a perfectly thick and chocolate shake, this is the place! Well worth the stop in Mcleary for this burger stand. Small and unassuming but big on flavor. Not many places will go to the trouble and expense to offer certified angus beef. While it brings an extra cost to the consumer, it's almost worth it in taste. Their signature burger is the "Grizzly" which is a half pound patty fully loaded including cheese and bacon! The *double* Grizzly is a ridiculous one pound mountain of meat! Best part is that the burgers vibe to the table SUPER juicy, not over cooked & dry as often happens. At $18 it's a little outside the realm of a good deal. The combo with fries & a drink made the meal for two just over $40, again not cheap eats. Might have been okay with a decent size drink and more than a handful of fries. These two things not withstanding Bear's Den is worthy of four stars. read more

It took me a long time to sit down and write this review. Posting a fair, accurate review for this place was not as easy as it usually is. McCleary is a [mostly] nice little town although it is quite the Peyton Place. I like [most of] the people I've met and talked to there and probably wouldn't mind living there. And compared to the hell hole where I live now (Portland), McCleary would probably be Valhalla. In any case, suffice it to say that there is a fair amount of drama swirling around this business and the owner. Some probably justified. Some not so much. Looking at the town's FB page the drama doesn't seem to be exclusively aimed at this restaurant. One gets the impression that a few of the folks who live there have way too much free time on their hands. I mostly really like McCleary and the townies who live there. I was really looking forward to experiencing the Bear's Den and really wanted to just love it. And I guess I can say that I mostly did. But I can also see why many Yelpers have elected to post some pretty harsh one star reviews for this place. Not making any judgements about what others have written except to say that a fair amount of it strikes me as petty and subjective. A few comments were rather troubling though. Given all of that I thought five stars would be a reach so I gave them four. So the restaurant itself: No complaints here. The food was ok. Not the best burger I've ever had but certainly several steps above what you'd get at a chain. Looked to be made with fresh chuck and not heated, previously frozen hockey pucks. Prices were decent. Portions were generous enough. There are not many eating options available in this little town so I would hope the locals and visitors appreciate that this restaurant is there even if it's not exactly the sort of business they'd like it to be. This is a family business. Steve, the owner, seems to run the place like he is a steamship captain. Not a judgement and certainly not uncommon for a small business to be run by an autocrat. He does tend to bloviate some, sometimes to his detriment. And looking at his FB page it appears that complaints that he scrubs negative postings about the biz are likely true. Of course he has every right to say what he likes in a free society and to remove posts he doesn't like. The thing I like and appreciate most about Yelp is that it is quite difficult to get a legit review pulled here. All points of view are mostly accepted here. Many moons ago I relocated to a small town in N.H. for my job and I know how difficult things can be for outsiders. I lived there for a decade and the locals never did really accept me as one of their own. I gather that same dynamic is at work with this owner since he seems to be relatively new to town. He strikes me as a good guy with a good heart although perhaps with some rough edges. It's too bad that some in McCleary aren't more accepting of "diversity".... ironic in a way because unless they are descendants of one of the local tribes, pretty much everyone living there is an "outsider" if you go back in time far enough. I am big on supporting local small businesses. My advice would be to just try this place out and have an open mind when you do so. If you find that you don't like the food or the way you are treated then post your reviews accordingly and don't return. All the rest of the unrelated things some folks are complaining about are just white noise to me. YMMV. read more

The Bear's Den has had many owners over the years, most were great, the last not so much, and it is now back on track. It is a small town burger joint and has the expected menu. The burgers are good, but my favorite is the Philly Cheesesteak. It is probably not "authentic" but it's delicious. The fries are standard. I miss the days of picking "fresh or frozen" and getting fresh cut fries with fry sauce. The new owners have made some great additions like outdoor seating, beer, and updated decor. They also have reliable hours and good service, so if you tried it for the couple years that was not case, I recommend giving it another chance. read more

My partner and I stopped in McCleary for fuel and lunch. First rule of motorcycle travel. Always listen to the gas attendant . Walking in to such a simple burger stand we were welcomed by very personable staff who offered personal opinion on our purchase when asked. We accepted the advice and I had the Jalapeno swiss , and my partner had the bacon blue cheese burger. Both with fries and a soda. The burgers were cooked to perfection, and fries were crispy and fresh, but the service. I can't say enough. We asked about the local Bear Festival, and it turns out the staff member is president of the festival committee. We learned local history and local economic history as well. Orange and cream milkshake tastes wonderfully like.... a creamsicle! I'm glad I got the chance to try one of their random milkshake flavours. Burger patty was big and I liked how they didn't do a rush job on the burger despite walking in right before closing. It took longer, and if we were waiting in the drive-thru, it would be longer than I would've liked but this is likely because they were close to closing and had to start the burgers They have reduced winter hours and close the dining room early, though the drive-thru remains open. We stopped by this place on the way to ocean shores we had to use the restroom so we went to the grocery store across the street and the wife said she was a little hungry so I said look there's a place the bears den so we pulled up and ordered 2 cheese burgers and 2 regular fries and I will tell you we both thought this was one of the better burgers and fries we have had in quite a while actually I can say it was on my top 3 in Washington state I highly recommend this little off the beaten path joint. My husband and I were waiting in our truck for our meal to be prepared and was looking in the window watching one of the girls prepare someones hamburger while she is putting french fries in her mouth. WOW! Was very shocked!! We kept watching her while she was indulging with more fries in her mouth. Yes, she was wearing gloves but, just wow. I will never go back there again! Passed through the area and stopped here to get a quick bite to eat. The burger was better than I thought it would be even though I was given the wrong thing, I ordered a double but got a single. The employee working the drive through window wasn't wearing a mask and they have a sign on their door saying they won't ask you to put a mask on if you aren't wearing one. That's a red flag, don't give this place your money. This type of negligence and inconsiderate behavior for other people's safety and health is the reason why we are struggling with the pandemic. We were on our way to the 101 and got hungry. We saw a sign on the highway that said there was a Subway at the exit... I'm very happy that we saw the Bears Den across the street. Nothing against Subway, but why eat the same old stuff when you're on a vacation? Only the owner was there when we came in. She was very kind and made some recommendations. She made sure we were enjoying our lunch a few times. We ordered a couple of burgers and a shake. The prices were reasonable and there were many options to choose from. I had the western burger. It was tasty with BBQ sauce and bacon, but I would have liked more onion rings on it. (I know I know... BBQ sauce and bacon are good enough without extras.) They provided us our own bottle of fry sauce with the meal! Awesome... I love sauce! By the owner's recommendation, we had fried mushrooms with tartar sauce. Good call! The milkshake is where I took off a star. It tasted great and was very thick. However it was a bit small. I finished it on the road and at the end of the drink, I found chunks of flavor powder or malt mix... Not sure what it was, but it made me regret my drink. I asked why this was always happening and they rudely told me to check their Facebook page to see if they are open.
