Housekeeping: At the front desk, they stated that housekeeping is not automatic, you would need to request it. Fine by me as we usually don't utilize it. A $257 charge was made to our cc upon check in and would be refunded if everything is "ok". Breakfast is from 7:30-10:00 am. It's adequate. I have a super soft spot for this hotel as I got married here and the wedding (in the conservatory) was truly amazing. The hotel was on the old side then -- it has since been renovated. My husband and I love to stay there and eat at Rod's for our special occasions. The renovation is great! The rooms are so nice now. Modern and very comfy! We most recently stayed in a king suite and it was big and lovely! So much nicer than the kinda icky bridal suite we stayed in 8 years ago But overall, this, like rod's, is still a pretty traditional place. If you don't like that, you won't like it! And if you're not staying for business or wedding, maybe not your gig. Still, I love it. Nice, friendly, train in the back, close to Morristown and Madison both lovely towns. Let's start with the good news. This hotel is conveniently located about seven minutes from downtown Morristown, making it a great option for anyone attending a show at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. It has ample parking, is quite lovely, and check-in was easy and seamless. As for the room, it was lovely and comfortable, with a spacious king bed. The bathroom was also very nice, with plenty of hot water, good water pressure, and quality toiletries. Everything was clean, and the Keurig coffee maker with a selection of pods was a nice touch. Now, for the not-so-good news. The room wasn't very quiet, which was a big issue for us. There were multiple weddings happening, and wedding guests were constantly coming and going, slamming doors throughout the night. We had requested a room on a different floor, but the hotel said everything was already booked. Typically, non-wedding guests would have been placed on another floor, but due to some booking mistakes, that didn't happen. One thing to note: in addition to the room fee and taxes, you'll be asked to pay $123.9 at check-in. The $100 is a security deposit (which should be reversed after check-out, assuming everything is fine), and the remaining $23.97 is a "facility fee." This covers free parking, Wi-Fi, and morning breakfast. While the extra fee was a bit surprising--especially since the room booking mentioned "free breakfast", wifi and parking--they do provide a $20 voucher you can use on your first day at the restaurant or bar. However, we used it on an $18 BLT sandwich we ordered at the bar which had absolutely no bacon. When we mentioned our lack of sleep due to the constant noise while checking out in the morning, they did say they would refund the $23.97 facility fee, which was appreciated. Would I stay here again? Maybe, but only if I could ensure a room away from wedding parties. The Wi-Fi did not work, maintaintence suggested it was a dead spot, the front desk offered to move us to a room that didn't have internet either. The shower wouldn't drain due the massive hairball. The rooms are desperately in need of repair and newer decor. The shades are hanging from half a rod as if this were some abandoned house. For the cost of a four star hotel the amenities are less than half rate. The owners should be ashamed and grateful that they somehow still have good business. This room for this price is literally insane. For nearly $200 less the archer hotel around the corner offers, beautiful, luxurious top-of-the-line amenities not to mention stunning rooms. The oldest and certainly the most overpriced hotel in the area considering its brass tacks approach to hospitality. So we were part of a large wedding party. We stayed a total of three full days. The entire time the heat and air did not work. After two days, I called the front desk and they sent someone up and he informed us that the thermostat is not talking to the heating cooling unit. He put a sticker on the thermostat, saying not use it. The heating and cooling was not very functional. We spent three days in a damp gross room. When I asked for a discount based on our experience, they took off $28 a day for a facility fee. The room was uncomfortable and gross for three whole days. I did get a lesson and how AC works from the maintenance person and that if I would just turn on the AC, everything would not be damp and that heat makes things damp. read more

Son married in this hotel 12 years ago. Loved it then and love it now. Spent a night here this weekend after a weeklong road trip. Rooms are still very spacious but have been modernized. Immaculate and quiet considering there was wedding activity. On site steakhouse and tavern were doing a good business for a Sunday night. Two giant burgers and beer hit the spot. Plus we used the $20 voucher given us at checkin. Very friendly, prompt service. Then just a few steps back to the lobby where we enjoyed the fireplace to ourselves before heading back to our room. I have stayed here a few times for a conference in the area. The hotel is in a lovely area, and parking is easy. The rooms are always clean, and the lobby is old-school pretty. I like that they have a continental breakfast that will get you to lunch. The one thing that was a problem was that our room was paid for by the conference we were speaking at, but the hotel insisted we leave a credit card for "incidentals." Ok, no big deal - have had to do that before at our other conferences. The problem is that they charged us for the room and fixing the problem took quite a while and much intervention by the person in charge of our conference. read more

The hotel seemed nice when I arrived. Directions to the restaurant are confusing, as is signage, complicated by the spillover of many wedding guests in the corridors such that you had to walk through their reception with passed champagne to access the restaurant. Going in the back of the restaurant is also confusing if you don't know that both are in the same location, so it took a minute for me to figure out that I should talk to the center hostess and not wait by the more casual area. The front desk could have explained this better. They also informed me there's no housekeeping for the room but that there should be lots of extra towels. For the record, there were 2 of each type, which doesn't seem like extra, but whatever. The bartender served me because the restaurant was full, and he did a good job despite being busy. The food runner didn't really speak and brought me a room service-size ketchup bottle that was dark brown and needed to be thrown out a long time ago. The kale salad was incredibly tough; I think most places either massage it, soften it with acid, or use baby kale. The pork sandwich sauce could use more kick. I could not use my $20 coupon on night 2 as there was a dinner for the business seminar I was attending, and most of the snacks and drinks advertised at the front desk were not stocked, and the cooler was empty other than some cheesecake. The gym had no water in the cooler all weekend despite my mentioning it to the front desk staff. The emails and texts asking what could make your stay great are nice but don't necessarily happen. I replied in the email that I would like an extra blanket and a variety of pillows. No blanket, and I guess there was variety, but the pillows are terrible. Very lumpy or a giant sponge are the 2 options. The mattress is comfortable, and there is a lot of storage for clothing/luggage/toiletries. The bathroom is nicely renovated. The a/c unit is super loud, but you need it because the weddings use the bar as an after-party location; then, they hang out in the parking lot after the last call, which was right under my windows. The wedding guests also take over the public spaces and make breakfast a bad experience. They all come down at once, so you will be in line for a while while they let each other cut in, and you may have nowhere to sit, which happened to me Sunday. On Saturday, I had a place, but when I returned from the buffet, the wedding guests moved my things to the floor and took the table while I was maybe gone for 3 minutes waiting in line. The hotel should give them their own breakfast in a banquet room. Another wedding guest blocked my exit from the elevator and refused to move until I clarified that I would be happy to make him move. They left trash in the hallways all night long as they wandered around drunk. The icing on the cake was waking up on Sunday to a bug crawling around the cup I had set my toothbrush in on the bathroom counter. Where there's one, I assume there are more. I also mentioned these issues at checkout, and the agent asked if I wanted to wait for the manager to return. I had to get to my meeting, but they said they could get in touch. They didn't. Came to the Madison for a wedding and stayed there for one night! The wedding was lovely; the ceremony space was covered with florals and greenery, and it's all glass. We went outdoors for the cocktail hour then came back inside for the reception. Dessert was in a simple, small room downstairs. The wedding coordinator seemed to have it all managed and handled the entire time. We were also able to hang out by the bar and a room in the hallway afterwards for an after-party! Unfortunately, we had to empty out by 2am. Overall, it was a lovely wedding. Hotel stay was nice and simple. The theme of the hotel is early American/Victorian-style. They had breakfast til 10am, but it didn't seem that good, so my husband and I didn't touch it. It included yogurt, cereal, bagels, eggs, and jam. Well kept rooms. Showers have good pressure and ample room in the bathrooms. Suites are spacious. Parking area is accessible on both sides. Railroad side and opposite side where restaurants are located. Useful know when driving around town. Grounds around facility are well kept as well. Rod's Steak & Seafood Restaurant is connected to the hotel. Makes it convenient if you are going to have a nightcap before you go sleep. Wedding reception greenhouse looking area was stunning. And when decorated is spectacular. Had a chance to pass by as a reception was happening. Picture does not give it justice. Would highly recommend. And Rod's Steak is a great place for a bachelor dinner. Great ambiance. Continental Breakfast served at about 7:30am. Scrambled eggs and a rotation of sausage or bacon. Bacon usually cooked very crispy. My favorite. Hard boiled eggs, bagels and fruit served earlier. Tea, coffee, orange juice and water for beverage selection. Tables are small and limited. Couch area and outdoor patio available for seating. In the evening, some premade meals and desserts are available next to the front desk. read more

Stay far away. Staff might seem friendly at first but there are quality issues as well as serious life threatening things that are giant red flags. Starting with the quality issues, the heater and thermostat did not work correctly. Despite heat being set to 76 F degrees, it would not respect the setting and stayed around 71/72. Moving on to the serious issues, they mainly consist of the following three. Number one, extremely poor hygiene. I was here for a wedding catered by the hotel. Unfortunately about 20% of all the guest were down sick with extreme food poisoning hours after the wedding. In hindsight, this should have been obvious as the lack of cleanliness reflected in the room as well. The shower was not cleaned properly and had what looked like small leaves trekked in from the outside stuck to the floor. Number two, the fire alarms are not audible/visible throughout the building. Was only informed there was cause for concern by friends texting me that it was going off one hallway down Lastly, the response from the venue is absolutely horrendous. Instead of apologizing for causing potentially deadly food borne illness's they rather spent the time gaslighting the victims. Saying things along the lines of "you can't prove it was food poisoning. You'd have to go to a doctor to get a stool sample and prove it was a specific food item." Rather than an apology and owning up to the mistake and a show of good faith to refund at least a portion of the costs for an expensive wedding is absolutely disgusting. Instead they blame the victim and falsely claim that there has not been food poisoning in 40+ years despite it being rampant in review sites. This establishment should be shut down for health code violations. Unless improvements and an act of good faith is shown I will be reporting them to all relevant health departments as well as the local news channels. Stay far away. As it stand now, sleeping on the streets would be a safer option. read more

It's truly disappointing that they cannot continue to provide exceptional customer service or experience dor their guests these days. I checked in and was charged an additional $22.93 on top of what I already paid online! What you don't get: -the most basic amenities like cotton swabs and shower caps... you must ask for it at check-in -a phone in the room... I was told use your cell phone. Hello... how can 911 dispatch know where I am if not on landline? -courteous customer service -box of tissues -clean shower What you do get: -bad attitude from front desk people -long wait time on phone call or nobody answering phone -old tired looking rooms I noticed there was no phone on nightstand and was confused. I called front desk and they said we'll send someone up to the room with phone. The technician came and was surprised there is no phone jack for landline. He said he will notify front desk so they can switch room for me. After 40 minutes, nobody showed up or call me to confirm room change. I called the front and kept waiting for someone to answer the phone. After a 3rd call, a woman answered, and I explained about the phone situation. She said you can use the same phone you are using, and I explained that if there is an emergency, I need to call 911 for help using a landline so dispatch would know where I am. They finally agreed to change the room for me. The room has a particular odor and cannot get rid of after trying to open door to let it air out. I have stayed here twice. The hotel rooms are spacious, clean, stylish and comfortable. The free breakfast has a variety of options but is usually very crowded. The welcome reception you better get to early because we arrived ten minutes before it ended and were denied any fruit, cheese and crackers and only one us was allowed to have a glass of wine. The problem with this hotel is the service. Very unfriendly and lazy staff. They give you a $20.00 voucher so you can use it as a credit at one of the two restaurants or to purchase overpriced snacks. Once we used the voucher on check out and there were no issues. The second visit we tried to redeem the voucher the morning after our one night stay and told the voucher expired yesterday. We explained that we had stayed there previously and it was not a problem before but the guy at the front desk (reception) still wouldn't let us use it. It just felt all of the employees were miserable and incorrectly assumed that everyone who stayed at the hotel was rich. Had a wedding here last night in the conservatory. Beautiful venue for the ceremony and the reception. Cocktail hour food was good, dinner food so-so. The chicken and vegetables were bland, and the salmon tasted fishy, to the point where my daughter, who loves salmon, took one bite and wouldn't eat any more. The waiters were very attentive if you were at the table when they came by. If not, you had to seek them out as I had to do to order my meal. I had to help myself to some wine they had at their station because I wasn't there when they poured a glass for the table. Our maitre d, Carolina, was missing in action multiple times before the event, admitting to oversleeping an appointment prior to the wedding, and missing the rehearsal. We had to keep looking for her because she kept disappearing. We had to tell her get someone to clear out decorations left by a previous wedding and request the floor be vacuumed as we prepared for our ceremony because she stood in the back not being observant or helpful. We had to have her paged when our ceremony was about to start, and on and on. Thank goodness our vendors were great which made the wedding great, but after paying about $20k+ to the hotel for this wedding, as parents of the bride and groom, we should have have been treated as guests of the hotel, not employees. I live very close to the Madison Hotel. Every Christmas Eve, I book a room for my sister and I include her name on the reservation and indicate in the reservation that she'll be the one checking in. This year was no different. However, this year, when she tried to check in, the front desk agent gave her a prickly, difficult time. He didn't bother to check the reservation to find her name listed and sent her away. He told her, "well, if you've been doing this for ten years then you should know by now that you need your brother's ID to check in." So, she came to my house, and I had to go to the hotel and deal with him. When I was there, there was a line about seven families deep. The front desk agent was ridiculously slow, inexperienced, and inefficient. He wasted like 20 minutes checking in the couple ahead of me, trying to find food coupons and chit-chatting endlessly about Rods, menus, etc. -- totally oblivious to the long line, trying to print the Rods menus from a desktop HP printer, describing the different room service menus. Holy cow man. When dealing with me he was prickly and difficult when I frustratingly told him he had it wrong the way he handled my sister. He had a catty little prickly attitude, one better suited at a Hampton Inn -- not the classic and prestigious Madison Hotel. If it hadn't been Christmas Eve, and if I didn't have a house full of people waiting for me to get back home, I would have absolutely escalated this guy's attitude, incompetence, and prickliness to management and saw this through to the end. Man I just hate "customer service professionals" who work like this. When he sensed my anger and frustration, he exclaimed shrilly and excitedly, "Christmas is no time for attitude!" Hilarious. "You mean like the attitude you gave my sister? Just give me the two keys. You've got a long line here." He and this low-end experience are single handedly the reason I'll book elsewhere next year. Such a shame that this once grand hotel now operates like the EWR Holiday Inn -- at least the front desk aspect of it. Here for a wedding on a snowy winter afternoon. The Conservatory is simply stunning as a venue. Truly magical, having been built in Paris and transported here. See pics... Service was excellent, food was above average and acoustics were great. For a smallish wedding this should be on the short list. The hotel has two adjoining restaurants and much larger event spaces as well. So guests can go whole hog (if you got the bucks) on wines and liquors instead of the usual drab fare. read more

A blast ffrom the past and that is not good. Inconsistent and resting on their laurels of the past, this location looks like it is lost in time. We were up for a wedding and have not been here since my sister was married here over 30 years ago. We stayed at the hotel since we found a good rate but it is obvious most of the hotel business comes from wedding guests staying over. The rooms were clean but very dated and they tey to give the aura of modernizing while they are not. Lots of bumps and bruises as well as old timey (and not in a good way) touches. The shower was tiny and we are not small people. The rooms were a good size and the bed was comfortable but there were few room amenities. It was passable and served its purpose although we weren't enthralled with the room and mediocre would be the best description. Breakfast was included but the room was so crowded it was difficult to find anywhere to sit and people were literally bumping into each other to get the barely passable breakfast items. It was chaos. The parking lot is a pure disaster with many potholes and in poor condition. We had a rehearsal dinner at Rod's (their restaurant) and the food was s..l..o..w to come out and cold. The service was mediocre as was the food. Some said the food was good, others,no. My wife actually got sick from a vegetarian dish she ordered from the plated menu which was likely due to Listeria or unwashed veggies. Luckily it passed quickly. The Cocktail Hour was pleasant and probably the best food we had with several set up stations as well as prep stations. The reception itself was OK and people made their own fun and best time of it. Luckily, the bride's parents (my sister and bro-in-law) did a good job in providing entertainment. The service, though, at the reception was horrible with the servers more interested in clearing the tables than providing service. Our table never saw a bottle of wine and the wine glasses were removed midway through the meal for no apparent reason. The food was inconsistent with some people enjoying their meal and some like those at our table, not. The next morning, there was a breakfast provided by the bride's parents which was adequate and much better than the hotel breakfast, but, I come to find out, ridiculously over - priced. Overall, the wedding was good but that is only because of the parents and of the bride and groom, and had nothing to do with the Madison. Shocking customer service We have been going here for years, due to convenience to my daughter's high school and then college. No, it wasn't perfect, but it was clean and acceptable. Until now, when a week short of my daughter's graduation they call to tell her that they don't take cats. We brought a cat when she moved back into her dorm last August, they allowed it and everything was fine. I told them we would have a cat with us this time and that was fine - until suddenly it wasn't, with no explanation, a week before graduation. The person who spoke to my daughter claimed to be the manager and accused her of being a liar and that they've never taken cats. This was simply not true. I tried to call the manager, and I cancelled the reservation when we found other hotels who take cats. We had reserved two rooms, they didn't even ask why we were cancelling. Don't do it! Don't stay here! I normally stay at a really nice hotel in Florham Park but there is a big conference this weekend at Drew University so everything was full and I ended up staying here. Upon arriving at the hotel it was impossible to find the reception desk because the lobby was absolutely packed with people having some kind of party. After wandering around the ground floor for a long time we finally found the check-in. When I got to my room, I didn't notice anything amiss, but when I got up late at night to use the restroom, I stepped in water and also noticed a towel was rolled up and shoved into the area between the shower door and the wall. It was completely wet. I put down another towel as to not step in the gross water. In the morning the engineer quickly came and tightened the toilet valve, but then more water was coming in, so I called downstairs and a second engineer came up and said that the shower needed to be re-caulked, but that they don't do that because it is construction's job. But he was going to call the construction people. I still have one more night here, so it remains to be seen whether this will actually get done (the hotel is completely sold out so they cannot move me to a different room). The only reason this hotel gets two stars rather than one is the free breakfast was good. Also, for some reason when I checked in they gave me a $20 credit for each night to use for the little snack store. That's a lot of snacks. Anyway, I think if you are paying an arm and a leg for this hotel it is not unreasonable to expect that new construction will be less shoddy than it apparently is! read more

My stay was similar to that of Vinny Gambini in the movie "My Cousin Vinny" where a train runs through town blaring its horn every couple of hours...yeah, that was my experience here at The Madison Hotel. No joke, it was nearly every hour/couple of hours a train would blare its horns across the street from the hotel! Either request to stay on the other side of the hotel, away from the tracks or avoid this hotel all together. Pros: - A clean room with the basics: wifi, tv, and clean bathroom - Decent free breakfast (breakfast sandwiches, fresh bagels, fruit etc) Cons: - A train horn that will wake you up throughout the night - dated décor on the room floors (there was heavy construction to update the lobby area. Built in 1936... so much character and charm in this whole hotel! Came here for a wedding, that was absolutely beautiful. Greeted as we walked in, was told alittle about the history of this place. Our room was clean, and roomy with 2 TVs...there were real books on the book case in our room, the bed was not hard it was comfortable. Very pleased with our room. There is a restaurant/bar connected to the hotel that had live music that Friday night. Just as much character there as the hotel. I wound up at this hotel by accident via a booking from Hotwire (who had mistakenly booked me at a hotel far away in Manhattan) so I contacted Hotwire and they instead booked me & my GF at this impressive hotel. We were both quite happy to be staying here and the service seemed great. There was of course the need for the woman to swipe my credit card - for (this seems high) $100 for "incidentals" - or if there is damage to the room (something that has never happened with me). On our way to our room my GF turned around and asked her about "Is breakfast included?" which I did not think of asking. The woman said to us that "breakfast is included - starts at 7am" so we went up to our room. I thought the room was fine (in general). The only (minor) things: 1 the temperature of the room was a bit challenging to manage. 2 the next day I realized that I should have pulled down the shade. It was not a noticeable thing when we had checked in as it was night and dark out. A third thing was I found the lever for flushing the toilet kind of hard to use - needed more force than usual. When I checked my credit card transactions a few days later I was refunded the $100 However it turned out I was charged a $23 "Facility fee" - for such exotic things as Parking WiFi and the Breakfast. I was not told about this up front. I don't think it's fair. It's a nice hotel otherwise - I don't remember hearing any train noises. Finally the restaurant closed at 9pm Too early in my opinion. A group of friends and I were in town for a conference and selected this hotel because we wanted to enjoy something local (as apposed to a giant name brand hotel) and historical with beautiful grounds and great restaurant. Big mistake. If you're booking it for a wedding it seems like a good spot because it hosts a giant atrium and plenty of space for your guests to stay but if you're not there for a wedding I suggest staying anywhere else in town. I'm not sure if the staff was new or unprepared to handle a night when the hotel had so many guests but right off the bat they were rude, dismissive and seemed wholly overwhelmed. However, the rooms were clean and updated. There was nothing particularly outstanding or unique but at least there weren't bed bugs or strange odors. One of my party had booked a private train room at the hotel restaurant Rod's, and when we arrived at our reservation time, the server sat us at a table. My friend who had made the booking well in advance inquired about it, at which point the manager came out and told us he gave our booking to someone else. At this point the restaurant was fairly empty so it seemed pretty unprofessional to give our booking away. He didn't even apologize. We asked if we could then sit in one of the booths to which he responded, "I'm not sure you can fit." Wow. The cocktails were great but an hour after placing our order one of the servers came by to let us know that they had forgotten to put our entire order in. He gave us free drinks which was a nice gesture but given the prices on the menu, my meal was appalling. My party enjoyed the steaks but the sides were lack luster and my seafood dish was something I would expect from a low level chain restaurant. My lobster was overcooked and it was all the worst cuts. The sauce was definitely store bought. Very disappointing. As if things couldn't get any worse, our room was above the atrium so by the time we got back after dinner it sounded like we were in the wedding. Everything was bumping and vibrating and our remote needed new batteries so we couldn't even turn on the television to try and drown out the noise. After trying to call the front desk, we discovered that our phone was also broken, at which point we went downstairs to ask to switch rooms but obviously the hotel was booked full. They did, however, offer us a new room phone. Great. After this experience I'll pass on visiting New Jersey any time soon. read more

I had the misfortune of staying at this hotel on September 18th, 2023 when I was in town for business. I was just staying overnight and this was well reviewed and a fair price on our corporate booking website, as well as being only 10 mins from where I needed to go, so I booked a room. I arrived a bit later in the evening (9:30ish), so I was checking in after many of the amenities closed (restaurant, pool, etc...) so I can't comment on those. The lobby of the hotel is beautiful, so I had high hopes for my room. The staff was polite during check-in. I was given a room on the first floor and as I walked to my room I started to have some concerns. The hallways of the hotel were not clean. There was dust along the baseboards, there were used tissues on the floor in the hallway as well as food crumbs, and many of the doors to the rooms were visibly dirty or scratched. It appeared that they were undergoing a renovation, you could smell that the carpets had been freshly laid, so I was hoping that was responsible for some of the mess. I arrived at my room, which was down in a creepy dark corner of the first floor, and was shocked. There was no proper room number, just a goldenrod sheet of paper with the room number printed on it tacked to the wall. The door handle/lock mechanism was coated in some sort of goopy looking whiteish residue that made me reluctant to touch it. When I got into the room I was surprised by how small it was, and once I got the very dim lamps turned on things got worse. The caning on the rattan portion of the dresser in the room was smashed in and broken. There were visible coffee drips and crumbs on both the dresser which held the TV, the small round table in the room where a desk would usually be, and on the carpet. It was clear the room had not been cleaned properly after someone else had stayed in it. I looked in the bathroom and there were dirty grey drips on the toilet bowl lid as well as similar murky splashes on the wall and vanity. I went to call the front desk but the phone in the room was coated with dust and hair and I was unwilling to use it. I grabbed my things and went back to the front desk to ask for a different room. It took a while for them to move my reservation but they were apologetic and I was given a room a few doors down. The room itself was nicer and larger, there was a proper room number and the lock was free from gross debris, but when I went into the bathroom I was appalled. There were disgusting muddy footprints on the floor and stains in the shower (maybe mud?). There was a splash of something disgusting as well as black marks on the wall above the sink, and when I looked at the toilet I noticed that there were splatters of human waste on the floor in front of and next to the toilet. There was a used tissue in the trash can next to the toilet, as well as additional splashes of human waste in the trash bag. To me it appeared that someone had gotten sick in that bathroom and had used the trash can as a vomit bucket, but sadly had not gotten everything into the can, and it was never cleaned properly after. I had to go back down to the desk and this time I asked for a manager, because frankly it was ludicrous to have two rooms that looked like nobody had cleaned them after they were clearly stayed in and visibly dirty. I was tempted to just stay in my car because the utter lack of cleanliness in BOTH rooms was shocking/gross and I really didn't feel confident that the rooms had actually been turned over aside from making the bed between guests. After speaking with a manager, who was frankly not particularly apologetic considering this was now my 2nd filthy room and I showed him photos of actual human waste left in the room, I was moved a third time to the second floor. The excuse given was that they are doing work in the rooms and sometimes maintenance doesn't tell housekeeping after they enter a room so they can clean it. Sorry, that might explain muddy footprints, but sure does not explain the human waste, coffee/food debris and general dusty condition of the rooms/hallways. The second floor hallway wasn't much cleaner than the first with food crumbs on the floor as well, and two luggage carts just sitting right in the middle of the hallway that were still there in the morning when I left. While my third room wasn't the cleanest room I've ever stayed in, it was at least free from visible waste and at this point it was after 11PM and I just wanted to sleep before my morning meeting. I am giving two stars instead of 1 because most of the front desk staff was nice and tried to be helpful, and the included breakfast buffet was well stocked with a lot of choices, but frankly I would NEVER recommend anyone stay here based on the clear systemic housekeeping issues they very clearly have. read more

We had a magical winter wedding at the Madison Hotel on 12/22/23. We had our ceremony and reception in the gorgeous conservatory. We absolutely loved the uniqueness of this room with its beautiful décor. This venue had always been a dream wedding location since driving by it as a teenager and admiring it from afar. We continue to receive compliments of how incredible and lovely everything was. The conservatory room is truly like stepping into a real life fairytale. It was clean and all of the transitioning from room to room the entire night went very smoothly. We were also so happy we were able to utilize the Victorian suite instead of the original plan for the cocktail hour to be underneath the conservatory. It is worth mentioning that the conservatory room itself is small and intimate. We had exactly 100 adult guests and felt we couldn't have comfortably fit many more. Although the day was fabulous, we did come across a couple of things that did not meet our expectations or were overall disappointing. We would like to also add that when we wrote a detailed email to the coordinating staff we had been working with to share our constructive feedback after our event, they NEVER RESPONDED!! Very frustrating and unprofessional. To be specific, we had a few issues with the staff at the front desk being rude when communicating information to us and our guests during the last couple of months. Jon at the front desk is awesome and always happy to help. We were told we would hear from our assigned maître d', once we were 10 days from the wedding, however, it was only 5 days before the wedding when we finally heard from our maître d' Charles. In our opinion, this was not enough time to finalize the many details we had hoped to go over with him and, if you are a planner or are adding many personal touches, trust me you will also need more than just 5 days. Although we felt we were extremely diligent in relaying the vision of what we wanted for that day, there was still confusion about where the entry table was set up, the timing of the champagne before the ceremony, and the arrangement we wanted for our guest tables. When dinner orders were taken, our children (ages 10 and 12) were not offered a kids menu like we were promised they would be so they did not have dinner since we were not aware this was happening. Other than that, the food was excellent, but the passed hors d'oeuvres were limited. As the hosts of this event, we barely saw any pass us by and staff did not go out of their way to bring them to us. During the rehearsal, and again on the wedding day, we had family and friends come to us reporting that Charles seemed to have a grumpy demeanor. Although he was always very nice and accommodating to us personally, the feedback that we got was that Charles was presenting as annoyed and impatient when we were not around. It is important to point out that the mirrors supplied in the suites where the bridal party got ready were completely insufficient. They were thin, oval shaped, and small. They resembled antiques and some of us were joking that we couldn't even fit our entire bodies into the view of the mirrors because they were so small. We included a picture of one of these mirrors so you can see for yourselves. We had to buy larger mirrors the night before and transfer them to the room, along with having our hair and makeup team bring their own mirrors. Being that the hotel holds several weddings a year, we would have hoped for more adequate mirrors since they are an integral part of the getting ready process. Finally, within a few hours after the wedding, a family member realized they forgot an important item in their hotel room and we also forgot a personalized wedding hanger in the bridal suite room that had our last name on it. We were both unsuccessful in getting an answer from the hotel about the lost items after calling several times. We finally physically went to the hotel and they had the hanger all along, stating that they forgot to call us back. Being that this was a personalized hanger that was left in our assigned suite, we're not sure why the room wasn't checked at the end of the night, or even in the following days, to ensure we had everything out of there. We're not understanding how this slipped through the cracks, but are grateful we were at least able to get it back. Our best advice overall would be to visit the hotel a lot, ask all the questions you can think of, ensure your vendors are familiar with the venue, and be prepared that, despite trying to provide constructive feedback to the hotel afterwards, you may never get a response. Despite some of the negatives of our experience, we continue to advocate that the Madison Hotel is a fantastic location for a special event with a conservatory that is unmatchable! In our opinion, you will not find a more spectacular venue in NJ! read more

**This review was written in 2020 and only just went live in 2022 for some reason.** COVID-19 makes running a hotel complicated, so we're definitely making allowances for that. Due to home renovations we decided to stay a few nights here. The woman taking the reservation was lovely, and a nice man checked me in. We got dinner from the "hotel restaurant" a well-known steakhouse next door. It was also very nice. It had better be, for that price. The rooms are comfortable, but no matter how high we turned the heat, it was a slightly cold room. The train runs right behind the hotel, so a few times during the night the train horn woke us. We were told that because of COVID-19, breakfast was ordered at the desk, they would give it to us to take back to the room. Sounded fine to us. Next morning, I came down - the woman at the desk was not unpleasant, but she certainly looked unhappy to be doing what she was doing. She was not wearing a mask properly. I asked for a muffin, and asked her for butter or jelly. They did not have any, she said. So that's not her fault, but what? I grabbed some coffee and went back to the room, then poured the coffee down the drain. It was undrinkable. We went back home for breakfast. If I had to be in this hotel for my meals, their breakfast would not be acceptable. $70 dinners and 49 cent breakfast just isn't a great combo. read more

The hotel has many nice features, Rooms are decorated nice, they are comfortable and clean, Staff is friendly, The Restaurants food is very good. I was however disappointed in the Morning Breakfast. It was very basic and not much to eat. I understand that during Covid, there needed to be changes made. At this time all the hotels I have visited in 2022 are back serving Full Breakfasts. Your Breakfasts in the past were very nice, food was good & gave me something to look forward to. This breakfast was poor. read more
