Same Review From Derby Star Pro Shop: Worth the 2 hour drive to purchase Roller Derby gear. Excellent one on one customer service. Very knowledgeable on Derby. Must be willing to invest a little more money. I went in today to look at their Roller Derby gear because as a fresh meat I was very uncertain on sizes and product. I had completed online researches, but felt very uncertain since this was not a cheap investment. Tom, the owner, spent time with me making sure that the items from the helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, knee pads, and all the way down to skates met my needs. I was able to try everything on and know that it fit. I skated around the shop to test the different roller skates. Tom was very informative on Derby gear and was not pushy at all. He made many recommendations based off his wife's derby experience and from selling products for the last 5 years. He answered all of my questions with honesty. I received a Fresh Meat discount and walked away with satisfaction. I spent about $400 for my starter package after discount. Estimated Breakout prior to discount: ($250 skates and toe guard) ($50 helmet) ($140 pads) ($20 mouth guard). My kit is more expensive than my google researches, but I was willing to invest more money into my gear. I highly recommend this location if you are looking for gear or wanting to try on 178 killer pads and roller skates before purchasing them. Do not fret when you walk in. There are lots of shops that do all kinds of crazy high end ultra specific bikes (and The Bicycle Escape does that too) but this is the place to go if you have a family. Great selection of kids bikes, very friendly and good with kids (my kids love going to the shop even if it's for "daddy's" bike). They are the only shop in Frederick that you can walk in and buy a mountain bike, road bike, kids bike, beach cruiser, hybrid bike, custom made American bike and a bmx bike. I don't need a bike, otherwise I would buy it from here. This is strictly a review of service. I went in mid November for a much needed tune-up and to fix a flat tire. They told me that they had a special going on starting December 1 for the tune-up and that they would honor this pricing even though I was two weeks earlier. That earned a star. Got the bike next day, super fast service and bike was (is) operating great. That earned a star Fast forward 3 weeks. The SAME tire has another flat. I assume something is stuck in tread to cause two flats within a month. I get to bike store about 45 minutes before closing. Other than walking (about a mile to home) this was my only mode of transportation. Guy working in shop dropped what he was doing on the other two bikes he was working on to focus and help me out. That earned a star He found a shard in the tread causing the puncture, removed it and installed the new tube for me. When he rang me up, he just charged for the material, no labor. Saved me $10 bucks or something, which is not going to make or break me. It's just the point of the matter. He said that since I got a tuneup and had the intertube fixed already, he wouldn't charge labor. So we are up to 4 stars. Why the fifth star? Cause there is a bad ass tail-less 15 year old cat named Jimmy roaming around and I happen to have a soft spot in my heart for cats. 5 Stars. They've been in business since 1985 - almost 30 years. I was stuck on 270 trying to re-secure the SARIS Bones bicycle mount on my car. Mark (from The Bicycle Escape) saw I was having trouble and pulled over to help. He gave me some pointers on a better fitting variation of my current mount, and he helped me strap it correctly to the back of my car. After that, he gave me a section of inner-tube and showed me how to tie down the handlebars to keep them from swiveling throughout the drive. We were originally going to purchase our Specialized bikes here but since we live in Anne Arundel County, we purchased them locally. Big mistake! The "other place" was a very long wait for delivery and one of the bikes was missing a small part. The owner of that shop had the audacity to tell us that is "normal"and the really part isn't missing. So we decided to contact The Specialty Bike Co. and Suntour on our own & they were very helpful and confirmed the part was missing. Suntour gladly shipped the part at no charge via 2 day delivery. So we decided to go back to the Bicycle Escape to by all our accessories ,racks , helmets etc. As we expected: 100% Grade A service with a great inventory. Everyone in this shop was professional, sincere and very accommodating. It is a bit of a trip for us up to Frederick and we envy all the bikers in the Frederick Md area. I'm new to biking and brought my recently purchased bike in to be checked out, being told from the purchaser (a different bike shop) that just a few things needed to be adjusted. I sadly learned, after talking with the owner, that my bike needed to be rebuilt and that this happens often. After explaining the process to me and their recommendations I knew I was leaving my bike in good hands. This is my favorite bicycle shop within 40 miles of my home (out in Eldersburg, MD.) Not only are Thom and the entire staff super-friendly, great with repairs (from the time I took a serious tumble and chewed-up my bike, to the time I brought them a 10-year-old much abused hybrid and they brought it back to like-new condition,) and have a wonderful selection of more than just bikes (great jerseys, nutrition, gear, etc.) They also just sponsored the rest stop/repair station on the Westminster Firefighter 50 ("Five Alarm 50") ride this past weekend, and did an amazing job. I was recommended to this shop by another bike shop because the Bicycle Escape is a Specialized dealer. My regular bike shop was personally familiar with the quality of work performed by bike shop number 2. I was not disappointed. I needed to have a fork replaced. Tom the owner (I think) was very careful in entering my requirements into the store computer which was key in eliminating the possibility of error by miscommunication. The steerer on the new fork needed to be cut to a specific length. Measure three times, cut once. There was no room for error and I was particularly concerned because that fork was the only one Specialized had left for my 2014 bike. Upon delivery I noted that everything had been taken care of as we discussed during my overcomplicated order. I took the bike home, made some adjustments and screwed the bike up. Tom without questioning my foolishness or embarrassing me, put the bike back to where it was when I left the store and didn't charge me. All in all a great experience. read more

Very disappointing. My husband took my 2000 Kline here for its yearly tune up (there was nothing wrong with it, it has most of its original components because we take really good care of it) because our favorite mechanic left our local shop to work here. It should have tipped him off when he walked in carrying my bike (I am 5'2", he is 6'3") and was asked if he was the rider of this bike. He requested that Keith tune the bike. He spoke to someone about it and left the bike. Keith fell ill and someone else decided to "go over" the bike for us. They called and told my husband that I needed new wheels - the wheels on the bike, while not new, have less than 500 miles on them. My husband went up to see what the deal was and they then tried to sell us a new bike. Keith was still ill and they said that they had done nothing to the bike in the mean time so he brought it home, however today when I rode it for the first time since this occured the rear break was completly disengaged, rear derailleur was skipping all over the place and the front derailleur was completly inoperable. I was stuck in the granny gear for the entire commute with weak rear breaks. Seems that they were more interested in selling us new than doing the smple service that was asked for. read more

One of the best bike shops I have ever set foot in. After moving from the Midwest, I needed to find a shop to reassemble and fix our bikes up. Tom and Roger were very welcoming and made our bikes look and function like we just purchased them. Roger and Tom kept me updated as parts would come in and when they were ready. Roger brought me back into the shop and showed me what were critical fixes. This shop is very welcoming and friendly. This is a riders shop. If you don't have a knowledge of bikes or if your looking for something menial, they will treat you like crap to the point where you will want to leave. It seems they think that if you don't know their lingo about bikes, to them you are just stupid....either that or they are just sharks swimming along the beach waiting to attack.
