This place is the bomb dot com. It has a casual atmosphere, great burgers, amazing fries, and a competitively priced happy hour for drinks. I had the "Great Chicago Fire" burger. It is advertised as being quite spicy, but as a person who tolerates a medium level of spice it was perfect for me. A little kick, had to take a break to eat some fries, but not so hot that it was unenjoyable. Speaking of the fries, they were great! We got an order of regular and then order of the sweet potato fries, which come with a parmesan-garlic-herb topping. Those were so good. The regular fries were good fries, but I was more into the garlic/parm topping. Overall I recommend this place for dinner or drinks! read more

The food, drinks and atmosphere here are all awesome. They have a stock market exchanged themed draft list, where the prices for beers go up or down based of demand. It was a really unique and fun experience. All of there appetizers were really good -- was a huge fan of the friend pickles and the catfish bites. We also tried the the Great Chicago Fire burger and it was excellent. Overall this is a great neighborhood spot to grab a couple drinks and a bite to eat. read more

Stopped in for some Sunday Funday Football action and was not disappointed for my first visit to The Big Board. The space itself is a bit limited on the first level for seating (think diner/bar style seating with some tables) - BUT there is a second level with more TVs and space for all your football viewing pleasure. I had heard that the burgers and the wings here were top-notch, so I opted for a burger around 1pm to go with the drafts - they have a nice rotation of their "usual" drafts and then they also had a separate board for the "seasonal draft" selection. Unfortunately for me, many of the seasonal drafts I was interested in they happened to be out of. The burger WAS delicious and perfectly cooked. We also had an order of the Parmesan sweet potato fries that we shared which were phenomenal. Service was good and consistent. Of note: the burger order is JUST a burger - anything else is a la carte (ie: fries). Definitely a more casual place to sit and watch some games. read more

Service was poor. Upon arrival, we requested two drinks a Long Island iced tea and an old fashioned. I have bartended for a resort, country club, and a couple of restaurants, so I watched him make the drinks. I counted his pours and they were off. Then he iced downed and shook the old fashioned. I gave him a chance even though I noticed the mistakes. My guest and I were both displeased with their taste. I went to the bar to ask for a remake and instead of doing so he became argumentative and said there was nothing he could do "it's a basic cocktail. He's going to make it just like me" referring to the other bartender. He then came to our table and continued to argue making us feel uncomfortable and causing us to leave. Beware of the bartender with the ponytail he sensitive and can't take criticism. Stay on his good side by ordering simpler cocktails like Jack and coke, but nothing over a margarita. read more

I usually eat beef about once a quarter and when I do it's oftentimes a burger. I wasn't close to my faithful burger place so I yelped nearby burger shops and found The Big Board. I tried the Chicago Fire Burger and all I can say is, WOW! The meat was flavorful, the mango salsa with the habanero sauce was outstanding, and the meat to bread ratio was perfect! Unfortunately, the fries were not good, like at all. They were hard and stale and actually really expensive for the small amount that comes with it; which sucks because, I.LOVE.FRIES! That's why I couldn't give it a 5, but I'll definitely be back for the burger! read more

Standard very basic neighborhood bar. No frills. Nice corner location with large windows. Food menu has a few salads, standard wing appetizers, and several types of burgers. Tried the 11oz burger and while the bun and meat patty was good, there was no vegetables at all in the burger (no tomatoes, onions, lettuce). The service was friendly and they still have their prices of drinks on a ticket board based on supply and demand. I liked their skinny fries. Burger and fries was (~$15). read more

I don't come to H St often, but I was meeting a few buddies here to watch some college basketball. We headed upstairs and had much of the place to ourself, which was nice. The staff was friendly and efficient. The beer selection, however, was pretty weak. As a place that prides itself on being a craft beer, I expect more than the likes of New Belgium and Guinness. I'll probably return here at some point because this is a cool spot. read more

I haven't been to this place in ages but stopped in here super late tonight cuz I let the time get away from me and needed a bite when most other venues were closed. Their late night menu still had adequate options on it, and I was able to order a burger and a ginormous plate of tater tots after midnight. I've been coming here for years, and they meet my expectations every time. Their burgers are tasty, and they cook mine rare just like I like them. For a neighborhood bar and restaurant, the kitchen is totally reliable. Also, while I always get a burger, the salmon and veggie burger options are often appreciated by my dining companions, and they report them as being very good as well. The two things that keep me from rating them 5 stars are this: the noise level is often very high, and the wait staff can sometimes be inattentive. Neither is always true though, I've been in on some nights when it is quiet even when crowded, and sometimes I do receive excellent service. read more

If The Big Board was a stock, this analyst would rate them as a "medium buy". Although I think The Big Board certainly has the potential to satisfy an untapped niche market within the Atlas District, it is too early to determine whether it shall live up to its potential. Entirely too many of The Big Board's troll-like Yelp reviews point towards amazing burgers. Truly, the Big Board speaks more of Desperado's, a tiny neighborhood bar owned and operated by the team that brought New Orleans "Port of Call", than it does Ray's Hell Burger, Good Stuff Eatery, or Black & Orange. Expect burgers with gourmet options (like gouda, blue cheese, habanero jack cheese, Guiness, etc.) served with a properly cooked burger that unfortunately lacks an exceptional level of internal flavor within the actual meat. The buns are quite thin (though they are still strong enough to hold the burgers together) and you'll end up pretty hungry even if you order the fries. Basically, you can expect a pretty good burger that has some interesting toppings, but it isn't in the best burgers category for the DC area. Frankly, however, it doesn't matter because... The Big Board is a neighborhood bar that has at least one interesting characteristic and likely covers a niche market within the H Street NE neighborhood. While The Big Board isn't covered with TVs, I would much rather watch a game seated at the bar in this comforting, inviting space as opposed to Star & Shamrock or Biergarten Haus (which is great in its own right but simply is not a sports bar). Also, the tables are moderately close together meaning that there is a strong possibility that you might make new friends with people sitting across from you. This might not even be bad for a casual first date idea because if your date is boring, you can likely just start talking to the people seated next to you and salvage the evening. The other potentially amazing characteristic of The Big Board is the rotating beer prices based on demand. While the prices are likely going to range from approximately $4 to $7 per drink (I think Kristen D's review is incredibly misleading regarding the price of Guiness), I fully support the idea of changing beer prices throughout the evening. If nothing else, microeconomics nerds like myself will be delighted. Sadly, the big board is not yet in operation (though there are rumors it will start tonight!) and given that the bar is in its first week of operations, they were out of their entire stock of IPAs (and a few other beers as well). In any event, I like the direction of this bar occupying the old Toyland space. Hopefully, it will be the first step towards resurrecting the bar scene in this somewhat forgotten corner of H Street NE. read more

Hey DC, for once, could we try not liking something simply because it's a new concept? If the proverbial meat is missing from the bun, there ain't much else to go on. And in this case, it's literally just the meat on the plate that's keeping The Big Board from getting a 1 star review from me. I actually went into this place expecting to fall in love with it, as pretty much anyone who knows me would expect. Conceptually, they take their list of beers and "mark them to market" price based on how much people are drinking them (I never got an explanation on whether more demand equaled higher price, as you would expect if you've ever taken a basic Economics course, or cheaper, as people seem to elude to), which sounds pretty neat. They also pair this function with a burger list about 10 deep, another one of my favorite consumption groups (food groups are so blasé). If they could have executed well on just one element of this restaurant, the beer or the food, I would probably find myself returning multiple times, but as far as I'm concerned this investment is a flop. Let's look at the most basic element of this restaurant first, the name and the concept. It's called The Big Board, so, one would expect something more than a single little TV screen (maybe 40 inches, if that) mounted at the far end of the dining space that's visible to perhaps 50% of the customers, and that's being generous. From where I was seated it was almost completely unreadable, only made worse by my waitress asking me if I knew what I wanted to drink literally before handing me a menu. You JUST opened up, you can't have THAT many regulars who have the menu memorized by heart...and if they did wouldn't you recognize them anyway? So I quickly scan the printed list, since I can't read the board anyway, and pick out the Chocolate City Copper Ale, since I had yet to try anything from this new DC brewery. The beer kind of sucked, but that's beside the point and not the restaurant's fault, but when I did get up to look at the board I see that Rogue IPA has dropped about a $1 lower than what I just paid for the Chocolate City...the problem, it's not on their printed menu. The lowest of any beers on the board had only dropped by a dollar at most, so don't go getting your hopes up for 50 cent beer as some other reviewers have exaggerated to (by the way, there seem to be a LOT of spam 5-star reviews for this business already). They also list "base price" for all of the bottle beers, but none of them are reflected on their screen, only the drafts are. As for the actual beer list, it's OK. There's really nothing that will surprise you on here, it's somewhat of a beginners guide to microbrews, with all the basics that any average bar in this area starts out with (some Victory, Troegs, Allagash, Dogfish Head, etc) but none of the really unique offerings from these breweries. Compare that to Smith Commons just down the street, where after being horribly disappointed here I walked over and sipped on $5 snifters of Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron for the rest of the evening (all drafts are $5 from 5 to close on Monday, now THAT'S a good lesson in demand impacting price). There wasn't much redemption to be found in the food. The one intriguing special of the day was already sold out, so I went with the Au Poivre burger (it had some dumb ass name I've forgotten already) and topped it off with a fried egg. They were also apparently out of sweet potato fries, so I chose the tobacco smoked onion straws/strings/whatever as my side. These were supposed to come with a spicy harissa aioli, which would have been nice, but I never received it. I dipped them a few times in the sherry cream sauce container, which was put on the plate for my burger, before realizing that obviously wasn't it. I've never smoked a cigarette, so I don't know what tobacco tastes like, but I'm guessing it's not heavy grease, pretty much all I got out of this giant mess. There's really no good way to eat these, so just suck it up and make a mess. I didn't actually believe Venu when he said he wasn't really full after a burger plus the fries, but now I'm quite certain he was telling the truth, as this burger reminded me more of a slightly plump slider. It was cooked properly, medium to medium-rare, even though they didn't ask me (a bonus, actually, all burgers should be done this way, were it not for stupid consumers), but the egg on top was not. I'm not really certain they fried it quite long enough, as instead of a slow ooze I just got instant yolk splatter that ran everywhere. As noted by others the bun really isn't equipped to handle much juice, so it quickly turned into even more of a mess. If this place were named after a song instead of a symbol it'd be Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Hopefully over time they will get all of these mishaps addressed (I doubt it, there are a lot), and I'm sure the momentum of publicity and uniqueness will last them a few months to assist in that transition. read more

If there were a special category for restaurants with strange themes that no one gets or cares about, the Big Board would win hands down. You probably won't realize this when you actually visit the restaurant (I didn't), but apparently the name of the restaurant is an homage to the NYSE. Like the stock exchange, and "like" is a bit of a stretch here, they have a medium-sized flat screen TV which lists the beers on tap and their current prices. As demand for the different beers changes throughout business hours, the prices for said beers change accordingly. So that Yuengling lager that you paid $5 for could be $5.50 an hour later or just $4.75. The concept, beyond being weird, is muddled with issues. For example, one can not readily see what is displayed on the "big" board as the writing is not visible from as far away as the adjacent bar. Worse, the selections on the big board, the selections on the bar menu, and what is actually available on tap are three different circles of a Venn diagram with not that much overlap. Your best bet is to look at the taps to see what is really available. Another issue is the tiny variations in price. I suppose you could develop an algorithm that calculates an optimal stopping time for your "diversified beer portfolio", but you might only be ahead a quarter or two for your efforts; the only crash you will see is of the breaking dishes variety, I'm afraid. In a briefer synopsis, the concept just seems silly. Okay, so the smallish TVs and ever changing beer prices might rule this place out for game central. They are also not very good about keeping the place tidy either. On an early Saturday afternoon, we passed over two unclean tables and opted to sit at the bar instead. They probably should do a better job with that. The food was a better state of affairs. I ordered the Port d'Amsterdam which was a burger served up with smoked gouda, sauteed criminis, and a port reduction which I accompanied with fries. The burger was decent. It was prepared to specification, was lightly packed, and juicy. There was a lot of flavor from the combination of toppings, and the bun was appropriately grilled. It was small, but enjoyable. The fries though were not their coveted sweet potato fries. We had some garish shoestring fries that were not very good at all. The Big Board has the potential to be a 4 star place, but right now it is decidedly average. I went here for dinner and ordered two burgers and fries. For the burger we took the approach of one with classic flavors (it was pretty basic with mushrooms) and one that was a little more original (the Chicago Fire). The classic flavor burger was beyond boring. I wasn't blown away and was debating if my meager cooking abilities could yield the same results if i made a burger. The Chicago Fire, however, was very interesting and a unique flavor combination. I really enjoyed the mango salsa and it was honestly unlike other burgers I have had before. Skip the fries and just order another burger to split with your companions - they were a complete waste. I didn't participate in the beer, but I'm interested to see how their board works once it's fully operational. I'm not sure if it'll be interesting or just an annoying gimmick in the end, but I'm willing to go back to check it out. While the Chicago Fire burger would merit a 4 star review, the other burger and the fries take it down a notch. I'm a firm believer that you have to be able to do basic flavors well in order to succeed, but Big Board isn't doing that this moment. DO NOT LIKE. I'm giving two stars rather than one, only because I rarely pan a place with a one-star rating for what could be a one-off mistake. Went in a few weeks ago with a group of out-of-town friends. Okay, one of those friends is kind of a bro sort, and he's got a strong southern accent. And he tried to order a round of Goldschlagers. The bartender looked at him like someone had just farted in his face, and minced "I haven't heard anyone say Goldschlager for like a decade." Didn't even tell him they didn't have Goldschlager, just stared at him like he was a leper. I broke the impasse by suggesting Jameson instead. Bartender rolled his eyes, flounced off to pour our Jamesons. My friend looked around the place, obviously aware that the bartender was etching "I HATE YOU" into his chest with lasers coming out of his eyes, and said "Dude, this place kind of sucks." Why treat someone like a leper for the easiest $40 sale a bartender can have? I live a block away, but I'll stick with Driftwood for a neighborhood dive. Staff there at least pretend not to be misanthropes. read more

This place doesn't deserve your business. I've been in there multiple times, including when it just opened and as recently as a week ago. I think it's actually gotten worse since they opened. Admittedly, the food is good and unlike other H Street bars isn't some niche variety you only want to eat once a year, but the service is terrible. The staff is completely unprofessional and the owner is a douche, for lack of a better word. (I should note, to the best of my knowledge there are three owners, but the other two are "silent".) They try to hide behind a massive "Currently in Beta Testing" disclaimer, but by now they should have their act together. They don't. The gimmick itself is pretty lame, especially as they only select a few beers to have on "the board". So, if you're not drinking one of those already-overpriced beers, the whole gimmick is shot. Also, the prices don't change! I've been in there for hours at a time, and I think the biggest change was Allagash White went from $6.60 to $6.20. Woohoo! Capitalism! Moreover, the bar doesn't fit the neighborhood. A stock market bar in a rundown rowhouse on H Street? Really? Who thought that was a good idea to begin with? As a resident of the H Street area, it's almost an embarrassment. No, let me rephrase: the children's artwork hanging all over the walls and windows are the embarrassment. read more

I really, really wanted to love this place. And if the owners didn't intervene, they would have received a mere two-star review from me. However, at the end of our dinner, one of the co-owners checked in with us to see how our meal was, and when we expressed our dissatisfaction, he comped us for three of our drinks. The classiness of the owners gives me hope that Big Board has great potential. I arrived with my dining partners slightly before 8pm on Saturday night. We were quoted a 45 minute wait time, so we walked down the street to enjoy drinks at a less-crowded venue. We returned exactly 45 minutes after we left and were told that we were still 5 parties down on the list. No big deal, we said, and off we went to wander around H Street. 20 minutes later, we returned again and were told there was one party still ahead of us. Fine, we said, we'll wait outside. Fifteen minutes later, we were finally seated. Our waitress was quite friendly and we began our order with drinks. When she returned with those, we placed our food orders. We chose the Port d'Amsterdam, Straight Outta Dublin, and Memphis Blues, and each of us chose a different variation for our fries. And then the time started ticking...and ticking...and ticking... Three cocktails later, our waitress said "Hmm...your food should have been here by now...let me check on that...." Meanwhile, we watched people seated after us get served and leave before our food even arrived. A while later, the waitress returned and promised it would be only four more minutes. It was 10 before our burgers arrived. Our food did not arrive until over an hour after we seated. This might be excusable if the food was spectacular, but it wasn't. The Port d'Amsterdam was unbelievably bland. I've made better burgers in my kitchen. My dining partners weren't in love with their burgers, either, but did express that they were at least flavorful. As another reviewer mentioned, the fries were a HUGE disappointment. The sweet potato fries tasted burnt, and they were served cold. The old bay fries were okay at best. The original fries were actually best. We didn't receive our check until about 30 hours after we first arrived. I was ready to write Big Board off until the co-owner paid us a visit. He apologized profusely for the sub-par experience, comped us for three drinks, and promised that service would be refined. In return, I promised to give them another try in the future. DO yourself a favor and wait a few months before you visit Big Board...give them time to work the kinks out. read more

Over the last year, I have been routinely and overwhelmingly surprised at the amount of TLC that the Big Board staff and the Big Board owner put into their customer experience. I suppose I have gotten used to a lot of bars and restaurants treating their customers with a dose of cynicism, but that is the furthest thing from the case at the Big Board. The food is good, the drinks come quick and strong, and the staff seems to truly care if you leave happy or not. The Big Board burgers are among my favorite in the city, a fact that I am happily reminded of every time I have one. There are a lot of good bars/restaurants in the H ST NE area, but I cannot think of one whose vibe, and staff, are so closely tied to the identity of the neighborhood. There I have met new neighbors, new families, and people from all walks of life who call H ST NE home. Well done, folks. read more

Held a private event here on the 2nd floor and it's the perfect venue. Best bang for your buck on H St (Rock N Roll Hotel wants $1k for a private room and H St Country Club was even more given private golf course rental, which also requires a food/beverage package on top of that). This place is run by 3 brothers and they're guys you'd actually sit down and have a beer with. They make the best damn burgers in town. For our party, we ordered a variety of sliders all to rave reviews (Chicago Fire, Memphis Blues, Big Apple). Their sweet potato and french fries are good, but the crispy tobacco onions are best. We had a minimum on the bar tab, which we easily met with 35ppl (or my friends are alcoholics). Food charges were separate and very reasonable. Note it's a cash bar upstairs, but there is an ATM on the 1st floor. It was a birthday party, so they even got a cake. We worked it out so we could bring our own laptop to play music. And finally, they played a slideshow of pictures on their tv (few technical glitches, but ah well). Easy access from Union Station for your suburban friends, lots of parking for your NW friends, and a short walk for the NE folks. Far enough west that it avoids any pretentious people from the main drag between 12th and 14th. This place is still under the radar, but not for long. read more

MY REVIEW FIVE *'s for the burgers! FOUR *'s because they only had burgers. I love this place!...for now. Friendly. Warm. Could be charming. Great location. Great foot traffic. Artsy area. HUGE potential. I can actually see this place years from now. It could be a well broken in, warm and chaming neighborhood tavern. Like...in a "ST. ELMO'S FIRE" kind of way. It could be alot of things. But, if it's going to be a successful food joint it better start considering something other than burgers and I don't care how amazingly delicious they are. That comes later. The childrens drawings were a wonderful touch. I love seeing that. It shows that you care. And you should, i guess. After all, it was their neighborhood first. Rock and roll burgers! A+ Nicely priced. Well prepared and cooked. So, my family and I went and we looooved the burgers. We loved what you did with our favorite food. I had two. That Habanero Mango Chicago whatever burger was remarkable. My son LOVED his and that means alot. Trust me. Baby mamma was crazy happy that TBB carried gluten-free burger buns. This was a plus. Huge. Someone did their homework. Most servers freeze like stunned deer when you ask them a gluten-free question. Ours did not. This of course allowed us boys to enjoy the night without listening to her gripe about not being able to eat the same foods we eat...even though they hurt her. But I was STILL surpised at the "only burger" menu. I think "wtf" was my initial reaction as I flipped the menu over and over looking for the appetizer list. Hey, I'm a big eater. No appetizers? No chili? No...Nachos? With that beer selection? No NACHOS? C'mon dudes...anyone that can put together burgers like that can certainly put together a plate of nachos. But really, what happens when your neighbors just get tired of burgers? I mean, what happens when they want some chucking ficken? I personally would like to see more. Just a little more. I'll go there when I want a burger. But probably only when I want a burger. Regardless of my review, I say ALWAYS listen to the neighbors first. Which, I am not. They are the most important critics. I'm just a yelper that thinks the Big Board will eventually have to adapt to its neighborhood while its neighborhood is still willing to adapt to it. I wanted to like this place because its three blocks from my house and its reasonably priced food. However, its mediocre. Four separate people asked for our order. It was great to get the attention, although please... get a system going. The owner apologized about this. The burgers were meh. I ordered the tomato mozzarella burger with prosciutto. I like the idea, but what I expected was a thick slice of tomato, thick slice of mozz and a slice or two of prosciutto. A thin american deli slice of not fresh mozzarella and then some tomato and prosciutto somewhere in the middle. It really wasn't bad, although both my friend and I thought the burgers were rather amateur (esp when comparing to a close competitor of Good Stuff). The fries were hot and fresh, although seemed to be standard frozen fries. I have received a comment from what appears like owner who is clarifying that they certainly aren't. The owner seemed sincere about correcting the service and making this place a great restaurant, so I hope to re-review it in six months time with a 5 out of 5. Since writing this review someone, who I am assuming is the owner commented on my review to clear a few things up. I really appreciate that he cares and what yelpers say and I hope my next experience is better. I also hope they use hormone and at least vegeterian fed beef. read more

I've been going to Big Board for awhile now. I've brought friends there for lunch, I go there with my fiancé when we don't feel like cooking dinner, and there's been a few nights where we've stumbled in and out of Big Board for drinks. We only live a few blocks away, so it's become our "go to." There are a lot of new places cropping up on this end of H street, and I'm a fan of most of them, but Big Board is one of my favorites because it's well-priced, laid-back, and the food is fantastic. After every visit, I think to myself, I should Yelp Big Board, but then I forget. I also, selfishly, didn't want Big Board to get too many good ratings, subsequently become over-crowded with those bar-goers looking for the next trendy thing, and, thus, not be there for me when I need a burger fix. However, after this past weekend, I feel like Big Board doesn't just deserve five stars, they deserve a gold medal. Let me preface this by saying that I had a gaggle (yes, I used the word gaggle) of girlfriends come stay with me this past weekend for my bachelorette party. We average 30 in age so we didn't want to do the whole club scene with the college kids. A handful of the girls arrived Friday night, and we went for a late dinner at Big Board (again, it's my neighborhood "go to"). The food was great as usual. The sweet potato fries are always crispy and flavorful. The Ciao Bella is one of the best burgers I've ever had. The Casablanca is a delicious option for vegetarians. And even the Salmon Salad is tasty (I say this as someone who is not usually impressed by salmon or salad). The service was good as well. We had such a nice time that I decided we should go back the next night - after going to La Boum brunch, doing a lingerie shower, and, generally, drinking and celebrating for an entire day. Let's just say that the bartenders and management are saints after patiently dealing with a group of girls who spent hours disrupting their laid-back bar scene with many drunken antics (At that point we may as well have been in a club because we were acting 21 rather than 31). Not only were they patient but they assisted in our having a fantastic time. So, in conclusion, if Big Board weren't already my favorite bar/restaurant within walking distance, it would be now. P.S. I can't believe I actually have to say this, but to the other reviewers who complained, there is no "tobacco" in tobacco onions......................... I can only hope, for the sake of humanity, that those reviews were a joke. read more

A friend took us to this small neighborhood bar - it was where he went after finishing his shift every night as a bartender. So it's a chill place. It's on H Street, which I guess used to be a rough neighborhood. But the people there were friendly and everyone seemed to know each other. The bar tenders let patrons pick music and horse around but it never felt out of hand. It was refreshing and nice. I heard great things about the food, but we got too chatty and missed the kitchen closing. They have a good selection of beer and it's not overly expensive. I can't really speak for much else besides beer and atmosphere... but since they let us stay after they were supposed to close and were great with service, I give it a good rating. read more

I have actually never been here for drinking so I cannot comment on the stock market, supply/demand beer setup. I can, however, state with confidence that the three burgers I have had here have all been the best in DC. Big claim, I know, but I would take the Memphis Blues (Monterrey-Jack cheese, house BBQ sauce & crispy "tobacco" onions) or the Casablanca (Black bean & chickpea burger with minted cucumbers & harrisa aioli with lemon) over any other burger any day. I, like many people really wanted to like this place. I have to admit that I have not eaten there....but I took my Husband there on Friday and was very excited about it, until I got there. It's really just another bar, the big board (was in fact not big at all but a tiny tv screen in one corner of the bar only). The whole back wall could be used to display changing prices, perhaps even a flashing light or something when the prices drop dramatically.....I think it's a real shame that the theme has not been used to it's full potiential. I also thought that the food prices seemed a little expensive...(don't you automatically get fries when you order a burger?). Lets hope that they do intend to play out more of the theme. Only time will tell what they intend to do with it. But I think if they make more of an effort it could be the kind of bar people would come to from all over the metro area. read more

I have to echo to the others who have said they really wanted to love this place. I am a big fan of the influx of sprouting businesses along H Street that are drawing in crowds. This is really a wonderful effort in revitalizing the area. Imagine my dismay when eating at The Big Board managed to sort of crush my enthusiasm. Here's why: I went for lunch with Jim on a Saturday afternoon. The place was buzzing and busy as there were a lot of college football games going on. They do have several flat screen TVs in the space so no matter where you twist your head, you will see some type of game. I wish they had on the closed captioning so I could at least read what was going on in the games. They had the volume down. Anyway, we wanted to be seated at a table and the waiter said we could sit wherever was free. All the seating areas that were available were dirty. The floors needed to be swept and tables needed to be wiped down. It wasn't THAT busy that they couldn't have done a little tidying up in between customers. Anyway, because of this, we opted to just sit at the bar. I liked their selection of burgers. In fact, I was pretty excited to try out their Memphis Blues burger which comes topped with Colby-Jack cheese, house BBQ sauce & crispy "tobacco" onions. Hmm..."tobacco" onions? Sounds spicy! I'll take it! I ordered my burger cooked medium and then my boyfriend and I shared the regular fries. I believe they were out of the sweet potato fries. Anyway, our food was brought out promptly and my burger was cooked the way I wanted it. I just felt the burger was too thick for the bun. I had trouble eating it. I like fat burgers if they come in sort of a slider format, but this was sort of in between a slider format and a regular sized burger. I also did not taste any tobacco in the onions really. The fries were enough for the two of us to share because neither of us are big fries eaters. They were tasty, especially with the Old Bay seasoning. The burger was just sort of underwhelming. I did not feel it was overpriced though. Prices are fair for a sit down restaurant. I was just not blown away by this burger. I tasted my boyfriend's Port d'Amsterdam burger and it was also just "meh". I do not drink beer, however, my boyfriend does and he was impressed by their selection of drafts and felt the prices were pretty reasonable for those as well. I did notice the board with the beer prices on it, but I had no idea what the concept was for it. It wasn't explained to us and I basically found out about it by reading the reviews here. Also, they had beers available that were not on the menu which I think is annoying. They should at least have them written on a menu board somewhere so that people are able to know what they can choose from. I know my boyfriend was about to order something out of the menu and then looking at the bar area noticed a different beer that was on tap he preferred. It wasn't listed in the menu. Service was okay and attentive but they need to be more diligent on keeping the space clean. I like the atmosphere of the Saturday afternoon crowd. We saw families mixed in with couples and groups of young singletons scattered throughout the restaurant. It was pretty diverse. I think it's a decent spot if you live in the area and want to grab a beer, but I would not go strictly for the food. read more

When I moved to NoMa, my first meal was at The Big Board. I've been going back pretty religiously ever since. Put simply, the food is fantastic, the prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, and the location is unbeatable. The fact that it's a locally-owned business is a cherry on top. The Casablanca is a great option for vegans (or non-vegans who enjoy good food), and you can't go wrong ordering a side of Old Bay fries. The beer selection changes with the seasons, and the bartenders are pretty well-versed on the brews. It can fill up on Sundays, and some of the seating on the lower level isn't quite conducive to watching football games in a group. All things considered, though, you can just head there an hour before the games start and enjoy a Bloody Mary during the pre-game shows. And to top it all off, they'll turn on your team's game if you get there early enough (a great perk for someone who supports an out-of-town squad and doesn't want to trudge across town on a Sunday). I'm so glad that there's bar like The Big Board in my neighborhood, and I recommend it to everyone I know. read more

Regular diner experience: When I lived in this neighborhood, I came here quite a bit for a reliable experience with a tasty burger that I could order the way I liked it (oh, and the mimosa brunch!). Great neighborhood spot for a casual dinner with friends. Event experience: I hosted my leaving DC party here and had a great experience from my initial conversation with Big Board to the party itself. They were very accommodating and the pricing structure for food was very transparent. They gave us the 2nd floor and they let me use a playlist I create for the music on that floor. My guests had a wonderful time and found the service friendly and responsive. I was really pleased. read more

I had high expectations going into to this place. I was disappointed that none of the burgers come with fries/or any side. I ordered a make your own burger with cheddar and mushrooms. The mushrooms were probably the best part of meal. I ordered my burger medium and received a very, very pink burger. I know many people have a different interpretation of what a "medium-cooked" burger should look like, but this was raw and pink. Even my boyfriend, who doesn't mind an undercooked burger, told me to send it back. Also, the tomatoes served with the burger were mushy. The servers were nice and friendly, but it will take some significant improvements for me to return to the Big Board. read more

This might be a cool place to come get a beer, but I definitely won't come back for dinner. We went because my boyfriend wanted a burger and I wasn't very hungry but liked the looks of their seared tuna salad online, plus we wanted something quick. When we got there, it turned out that the menu had changed and the seared tuna salad was now a grilled salmon salad. I might have just gone for something else except that I was promised that the salmon was more like sashimi (they did recommend medium rare). I decided to be open-minded. When our food came, my salmon was fully cooked. In addition, the service was slow and the server didn't address the fact that I only ate about three bites of the salad she talked me into. I would have been totally cool with going back for a burger, but my boyfriend ordered his medium rare and it wasn't even a tiny bit pink inside, so I don't trust them with those either. read more

Yuengling was selling at a discounted price of $4.85, which is funny, because that would be considered a premium almost anywhere else. Unfortunately, the side of mushy sweet potato fries that came with our burgers was not subject to market forces and selling at $6, firm. This type of overpricing and lack of value is brash even for H Street. The service was OK, the space is pretty nice and the burgers (did I mention they were overpriced, too?) were decent, but I won't be back until the next financial crisis has bid their modest assets down to more reasonable levels. read more
