Awesome gem tucked away in Sterling that is a must try! I'm not sure how authentic the food... but it is certainly delicious and freshly prepared which is all you really want in any food place. Being that it is a Greek restaurant, we had to try the gyro and falafel. The gyro was packed with meat and veggies which made every bite very satisfying. The gyro also came with fries which completed the whole meal. The falafel had great flavor and paired well with the Greek salad. The portion was generous so make sure you come hungry. BLUF: After all these years and several locations later, Big Greek Cafe still delivers good food at a decent value. The service at the Sterling location on the day I visited was excellent. Friendly, patient, helpful, and polite. The feel of the location itself is your typical fast-food joint. Get in. Get out. Seemed clean enough. Not very cozy as in a great place to hang out. Not sure how it is during peak hours but the parking lot might get a bit crowded. The street for sure is busy & can cause cars to back up into the parking lot. The food, while not as awesome as I remembered it 5 years ago in MD, is still tasty. Today's visit, the meat in gyros was a bit dry & the gyros & the side of fries I paid full price for were rather skimpy in serving, given that the gyros used to be served with fries included in the price of the gyro. Still, the fries & the gyros still taste good. Not as good a value as in days of old...even on $7 gyro Wednesdays (which used to be $5 gyro Wednesdays). The fried fish sandwich was a good deal in these horrible economic times because it comes with a good-sized filet and fries. Although, $2 extra for Greek fries that only had a tablespoon of garlic, dry herbs, and feta crumbles tossed on top rolling off the fries then pooling at the bottom of the container. The garlic, herbs, & feta are supposed to stick to piping hot fries steaming with the awesome garlicky oil. What I received was really underwhelming and didn't even come close to the Greek fries I remember. So, I'll preface this review conclusion with this: Big Greek Cafe was one of my absolute favorite local joints... the food made me drool just thinking about it. The food was always plentiful in servings, hot, fresh, aromatic, wonderfully delicious, and everything on the menu was such a good value, you'd end up buying a ton of food. Was this trip worth the drive? Glad the curiosity about whether this VA location equaled the MD experiences was satisfied. Probably no longer high on my list to go out of my way to drive 30 minutes to get what used to be my fav sandwich. It seems a little too fast-foodsy, mass-produced now than the original delectable hole-in-the-wall local joint. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely pick up something because it's still tasty...just not as fantastic as I remember. read more

Not my favorite Greek spot,, but it was decent. I would say the food was average. Like a lot of spots in Sterling it's very Americanized and doesn't taste flavorful or authentic. However, it doesn't mean I would never eat here again. It's like the equivalent to someone saying Chipotle is a Mexican cuisine. It's a casual spot with seats inside. Stumbled upon this gyro spot that had a lot of classic Greek food. My girlfriend had a sore throat so we got the lemon chicken soup which was light, citrus and very yummy. The gyro was massive and packed full of meat and also very good. Went here not knowing this Greek Restaurant had changed hands so was a bit surprised to find the Big Greek Cafe. Basically looks the same inside, very clean and decent amount of tables and also has about six outside. The service was great, very friendly. We ordered a chicken platter and some hummus and a side greek salad. We wanted just chicken skewers so actually ordered the wrong thing and they were more than accommodating in bringing us the additional chicken without charge even though I offered to pay due to the fact that it was probably my fault in how I ordered it. It was very much appreciated. The food was excellent, my only comment would be the jasmine rice was very plain. Overall it was a very good experience and would recommend giving it a try. read more

If you are craving gyros, grape leaves, and other Greek food, omg. This place? The portions? It's a gem. I missed when places would be this generous with portions AND have delicious food so it makes it all worth it! I've so far tried the signature Gyro Pita and a Gyro bowl. I think I prefer the pita because it has more tzatziki sauce, a banana pepper, and a feta cube whereas the bowl didn't have as much flavor-wise (still good though!). I really loved the grape leaves too because they were fresh and warm! The restaurant has plenty of parking in front with a shared lot of other businesses like Yamachen's Sushi and TeaDM. They also have an app you can order on for takeout which also makes it pretty convenient if you are on a time crunch! So far both of my takeout orders have been ready on time too. :) read more

I had my eye on this restaurant before they became "The Big Greek Cafe". Previously, they were all about Souvlaki bowls. With a change in name and a larger menu, I wanted to give it a try. As for ambiance, it's basically a take out place that has a few tables for those who want to dine in. We were here on a Sunday around 4:30. At that time, the place wasn't busy at all. It's set up so you have to order at the register. The young woman who rang us up was nice but she didn't have a good command of English. We told her clearly that we were ordering for two people and also clearly said we were ordering two of the same meal. We paid for our (what we thought would be) two meals plus a bottle of Fanta that we planned to share. Then, we chose a table and waited for our food. When the food came out, there was only one order that was brought to the table. I pointed out that we ordered 2 of the same meal. She said "I only charged you for one." Well...the bright side (yes, there was a bright side) was that we split the food and found it was just right for two. We ended up sharing a cup of avgolemono soup which, surprisingly, wasn't too bad. One could taste the lemon in it. The piece of spanakopita was quite big so we cut it in half. It was okay. We did appreciate that it wasn't overloaded with feta. For the two sides that came with it, we chose roasted Greek potatoes plus string beans with tomato sauce. A few slices of warmed pita bread came with it. The potatoes were okay and the green beans had nice flavoring. While we were eating, the young woman approached our table to apologize about messing up our order. She offered to get us a free side. I asked if we could get baklava and she said "yes". We took the baklava home and later had it with some tea. Again, it was okay, but we've had better. I admit to being picky about baklava as I grew up eating it freshly made from scratch by my great aunt and grandmother. So...if you like Greek food and come here with tempered expectations, you will do fine. However, if you come here expecting food as good as My Mom Eugenia's, you will be disappointed. Just remember it's cheaper to eat here. If the owner and/or a manager sees this, I would suggest training those who work at the register to repeat back the order to the customer to make sure it's correct. read more

My husband and I usually like coming here because the portions are big and prices are fair, but on our most recent visit, I found a small piece of bone that look like possibly teeth in my wrap. I meant to keep it and have it lab tested, but it was accidentally thrown away in our plastic bag. Really upsetting not exactly sure what it was but many people said it did look like teeth and it felt like it very hard could break and chip your own tooth. read more

This is by far the best Gyro I have Ever Ever had Lifetime!!!! The meat is soo juicy and us gyro lovers know how frustrating it can be when your mouth is ready for a good gyro and then the meet is dry. No need to order Extra meat either, the amount of meat on this pita is insane! Busting out of the gyro. I always like to steal a couple of pieces of meat my themselves and eat them before I dig in to the gyro, but then I am always left with just bread and lettuce. You wont have a problem here. And the tzatziki sauce is to die for! This joint even beats going to the fair and getting a gyro off the spit. Dont miss out. read more

The crispy founder was perfectly golden and had large pieces, enough for leftovers. The soup and spanakopita were also delicious. Really, truly a great experience. The food was fresh, vegetables crisp, meat flavorful and crave-worthy. It was our first time trying this out, and we were so glad we did. Had the dip trio, calamari, souvlaki, and gyro sandwich and drinks. We couldn't stop raving. Next time will try spanikopita and moussaka and dolmades. The portions are great, too. The staff was so pleasant and helpful, asking us a couple of times if we were doing okay or needed anything. The place is bright and immaculate. One of the staff was wiping/sanitizing the door handles and removing the smudges on the glass! If there was any negative in our experience it was that some customers who were waiting for their take-out orders had their speakers on loud and it was disruptive for the dine-in people. First time eating at this location as well as eating at this chain and it was really good. Will definitely be returning and can't wait to get their $7 Wednesday Gyro deal. Gyros were stuffed with meat, very filling and tasted great. They were served piping hot - even too hot to hold at first. Only thing I missed was them not having lettuce in the gyro automatically, but found out after the fact that you can add it free of charge - happy dance!The pita was pillowy soft and wonderful. Their pita sandwiches are served with a feta cube and pepperocini which is a nice touch too. I chose to make mine a combo platter so got to add 2 sides for $6. I chose the Big Greek fries which were very tasty with feta, oregano and other herbs and the side of tzatziki was perfect for dipping. The other side my hubs wanted to try and he got the roasted Greek potatoes which we both enjoyed as well. We ended up bringing home some fries and potatoes because we couldn't finish it all. Service was great. It's counter service, you fill up your fountain soda (or grab a bottle if that's what you ordered) and they will then bring your food to you. While eating we had 3 different employees check on us to make sure everything was ok and asked if we needed anything else as they walked by. They were all very friendly. They definitely have a decent amount of carryout orders going on - we saw multiple bags lined up on the counter as we walked in and passed a driver leaving with some bags as well. First of all, my goodness what a clean establishment! Like shiny clean kitchen and tables. Staff was polite and hard working. Food was delicious. We got the gyro and souvlaki and were very pleased. I found the food a tad bit under seasoned and fries in the pita would have been nice. I will be back and anxious to try other things on the menu. read more

I really hate to leave a bad review because everyone was nice and helpful and the establishment was clean. My issue was that I ordered the gyro and it was literally inedible due to the insane amount of salt!!! Like I had to throw it away because my tongue hurt after a few bites. I thought the extra tzatziki sauce would help mellow it out, but it had no flavor at all and did nothing to elevate the dish. I was so excited to see this place open but I don't think I could back if the chef thinks anything close to this considered a "normal" amount of salt. This was my first time trying this restaurant. I was amazing! The portions were beyond generous, and the service was lovely. We tried the Gyros, which were bursting with flavor and meat. We also ordered "The Big Greek Fest" which is perfectly named, as it was a feast, including different meats and sides. The potatoes were amazing. We have been missing a great restaurant ever since Scorpios in Vienna closed. This is far better!!! The seasoning was amazingly spot on. It was as good as the food we had at the engagement party in he home of a Greek friend. (I think we were the only non-Greek people there) It was as good as what his family made, and just as generous. The owner/manager was a charming gentleman, worth returning just for him. I am excited to return to try some of the other dishes, like the spanakopita. This is authentic Greek food, and you can feel the love. The ambiance was casual , very clean and welcoming . Plenty of seating, but we like to carry it home, as we live close by. They make it easy for you which ever way you choose to dine. We will definitely be regulars, and happily bring visitors with us. So happy to have them in the neighborhood. Welcome! read more
