I bought two el-chipo foreign-made bikes and assembled them very poorly (I am a beginner biker). John-The-Bike-Doktor was amazingly helpful and at affordable price. He fixed up both bikes in no time. I have a feeling John likes what he does and he sure does it well. I have two more bikes in the mail. Hmmmm. So, Veronica B., he lets you use his compressor & air for free, helps you fill your bike tires, and you complain because he didn't physically wait on your fully capable husband too? Really?! C'mon..... I had a much more humble of an experience. My husband and I wanted to go ride Powerline Trail and we noticed my tube was bad. He hopped in the truck, drove down to the bike doctor and picked up tube. This is when my husband realized that he forgot his wallet at home. The Doctor GAVE him the tube and told him to "catch me next time". We were able to go on our ride (it was getting later) and I stopped in a few days later with the $$$. We didn't expect anything for free and were extremely grateful that he was so cool as to trust my husband. I fully appreciated his willingness to lend a hand. 5 stars from me! We have since been going to his shop & have had nothing but courteous, informative, and REAL treatment. I still can't quite get over the fact that you complained that he didn't carry your bike or physically put air in your husbands tire after he graciously allowed you to use his compressor and helped YOU with your bike. Talk about someone who expects something for nothing! Mind boggling. read more

This is the go-to spot for cyclists visiting Kauai, especially avid mountain bikers. I visited earlier this year and was eager to trying something different from beaches, cocktails, and helicopter rides (not that those things are bad...). I found the Bike Dok and arranged to rent a mountain bike. Johnny can get you set up with a bike, but more importantly can help you find the rights trails based on daily conditions and/or a guide so you don't get lost. It's not a place to just rent a bike and then roll solo, so suggest you take Johnny's advice when it comes to options. There might be a possibility of joining existing group rides, but it's not for beginners! Next time I am in Kauai, the Bike Doktor is going to be one of my first stops. Highly recommended! read more

I have a old European steel frame road bike that needed new parts and repairs. Other bicycle repair shops refused to work on it because of the age and condition. The owner/bike mechanic not only got the parts he fixed it fast and didn't charge me through the roof for the work. Should have taken my bike here first and would have been riding the last few months. Really cool to be back on the road and trail. read more

There aren't enough words to describe Johnny the bike doktor. He rented me a 29er and took me mountain biking in Anahola state beach area. There is the guy from Dos Equis who is known as the world's most interesting man. But that is false advertising because Johnny Makani aka Sarge is the worlds most interesting man. Just being fortunate enough to hang with this guy for 3 hours(Although I didn't really hang because he is a machine on a mountain bike) was worth it alone. The shop is famous see May's issue of bike magazine. There prices aren't "hawaii" and very fair. Comparable to California. He will take you out on the local trails or hook you up with a group ride. Thank you again for making my trip to Kauai that much better Johnny! read more

A buddy of mine and I rented a couple of Marin 29r hardtail bikes from the shop. The owner provided us well cared for bikes and went over the adjustments necessary to make our ride safe, trouble free and enjoyable. He even provided details for local trails that were open and safe to ride since it had been raining in prior days. Suffice to say We had a great ride and enjoyed the scenery Kauai offers! I am very surprised at the bad review. It sounds more to me like someone projecting their own negative hostilities. John, the bike doktor may just be the nicest and also the best at what he does on Kauai. His prices are extremely fair and if you take a moment to get to know him, he is extremely personable. I brought a bunch of bikes to him and he did amazing work. Just recently I was traveling to NY where I live most of the time, and a friend was using my bikes. Two of them broke and she brought them to the bike doktor for me. Having only met me once before he told my friend that I can mail him a check or just pay him when I return to Kauai. This level of trust is not common anymore and it is one of the reasons I love Kauai so much. I highly recommend John the bike Doktor. read more

I asked if there was anywhere else close by we could rent a bike and he told us to go 30 miles away in Kapa'a. The Doktor really knows bikes. He specializes in mtn bikes but services all, and knows all there is to know about local trails, conditions, etc. This is a one-man operation, and it is Kaua'i, where everyone works on island time, so keep that in mind when bringing your gear in for service. That being said, he will often drop everything to help get you on your way, and his prices are very reasonable. read more
