Soooo after a little hiatus ... fasting and cleanse .. I'm outside lol ... all the spots on Main st were packed soooo in the distance we saw the sign and decided to make that walk from main to assembly .. the atmosphere is lit immediately ... there was a dj spinning live well lit and vibrant .. a plus was that the music wasn't crazy loud so I could still talk to and hear my wife ... we ordered the beignets to to try which oil always skeptical to order outside of New Oreleans ... for my entree since I'm still on my cleanse of no fried foods .. I ordered a Caesar Salad with the Salmon ... the beignets honestly were better than expected could have a little more powered sugar and yes I know they are fried but I couldn't resist lol ... But the salmon and salad was top notch ... the Caesar dressing had a tangiest to it that paired great with the Salmon .. the seasoning on the salmon was beyond exquisite. My personal preference the salmon could have been cooked less but I was never asked how I wanted it prepared ... nine the less it was still good. My only issue with my dining experience was my waitress being unknowable about certain items on the menu which is unstable to a certain extent but atleast be able to make recommendations. Also we had an extended wait to leave because she got lost several times that night including behind the bar ..drinking . Which I don't have a problem with UNLESS. You can't multi task .. you have to know your customer .. my wife and I were ready to go after eating and she was have a good ole time lol ... Sadly, I don't have any food to review for this assembly Street location because we received it and waited 20 minutes and we're never addressed. And then when we got up and began to walk out, we could see one of the waitresses by the kitchen, throwing her hands up like she had just ignored us for a whole 20 minutes, I did inquire upon arriving if this was the same ownership of the Broad River location, and I was advised it was the same chef so based upon my previous experience, the chef is truly gifted and has an amazing craft, but poor Customer service will always outweigh the entire experience. as you could see, I had planned to do a video food review because I was so excited and even invited some friends to come and dying with us. I want to preface by saying that I have supported this business both at the food truck and the broad river location, so hopefully this review can be taken as constructive criticism. First, congratulations to the business on moving to their new downtown location. The space is beautiful and brings an elevated feel. We dined in a few days after the grand opening. Several smiling faces greeted us and we were seated quickly. Our server informed us that this was her first night working. We ordered a po'boy and a combo plate with shrimp and catfish. Our order had to be repeated at least 5 times before it was entered correctly. There was apparently an issue with the sky tab, no big deal. It became a big deal after three different people had asked our order and they were still putting it in, one saying that the tickets were "printing incorrectly." We knew there would be a delay on our food based on how long it took to get the order in. Now, the wait. This is where all positivity on my part started draining. We were continuously told that our food was coming, up next, etc. and trying to remain patient. When we told someone we had been waiting an hour, the response was just "yeah I know, let me check on it." This was especially upsetting because a couple that came in AFTER we ordered received appetizers and entrees before we received anything. Right when we decided we were going to leave, the food finally appeared. Toppings were wrong, sides were missing, and the catfish tasted like it was cooked in old grease. We decided not to send anything back based on the fact that we'd already been in the restaurant for almost two hours. Even getting a receipt took 15 minutes, and I wish I was exaggerating. There was no attempt to offer an appetizer, dessert, or drink on the house for the extreme wait time. No offer to discount the meal, just a "we'll be better next time" from our server. I genuinely hope that this restaurant gets it together quickly so that they are able to succeed in this new space. read more

I love the cajun and creole flair that this place is adding to Columbia. The crab cakes were pretty good, especially served with the sauce and the corn relish. My seafood platter, flounder and shrimp, looked good, but I believe it was slightly overfried, and my fries were cold. The chicken tenders had a good taste but were also overfried. The fries that came with the chicken tenders were warmer than what came on the seafood platter. The space is nice and seems to have a nice vibe. The customer service was great. I went on a weekday, so it was not busy at all. I gave them 4 stars because the taste of the food was good. It's just that the actual entrees were overcooked. Hopefully, next time, everything will be just right. read more

Decided to try this restaurant after being warned it was terrible. Our waitress took entirely too long to come to or table and take our order even though there was only 1 other guest at the bar. I ordered the Etouffee and I didn't like it. We asked for the waitress, she waved her hand grabbed her purse and exited the building. We asked an employee for our check and he stated there was no waitress on duty and we would have to wait. We needed to leave and were not about to wait for a waitress to come to work. The 2 other staff members were on their phones. Finally the bartender unenthusiastically cashed us out. Ended up leaving my meal on the table and ate somewhere else. Waste of money. read more

This is a great Cajun themed restaurant off of Broad street. The atmosphere and music can have you feeling like you are in the French Quarter of Nawlins, but you are still in Columbia. I read several reviews of the food and I can say they were very accurate. The choices are varied and are authentically made. I couldn't decide on what I wanted from the menu so I asked if I could order a bowl of gumbo from the appetizer menu and add a side of catfish and they said no problem. The waitress was knowledgeable of the menu and was very friendly. This was my first time eating here but it will not be my last. read more

First time trying this restaurant. The owners were very personable & friendly. I saw them speaking with various customers throughout our visit. We wanted to try the crab cakes but they were out. I ordered the blackened catfish and fried green tomatoes tchoupitoulas. Both were good. The fish is highly seasoned. It was served with asparagus & dirty rice. The tomatoes are topped with an crawfish sauce. We also had the beignets and they were AMAZING! We ended up ordering more! They were hot, fresh and sweet. The outside is flaky and slightly crispy and the inside is doughy. They would pair perfectly with coffee! I also tried the red beans and rice (which I've previously had from their food truck) and the fried shrimp po boy! The fried shrimp was very very good! A true treat. Enjoyed a girls night out with friends at this great restaurant. Once you step inside, it's definitely a unique experience. The decor & music is straight out of New Orleans. Ok so I've been here a few weeks ago, returned for a take out order, and now I'm here again guess that means I really like and enjoy this restaurant. Cajun food is my fav. The layering of flavors is soooo tasty to me and The Bistreaux has not failed me. Very authentic. The vibe and food take me back to my NOLA days. I also love that the full menu is available during brunch unlike some other places. And I don't have to scream over the music. This is not your party vibe brunch. This is your chill and enjoy the food. I'm guessing a live band is prob coming soon which would just take this spot over the top for me. Oh and the cost is amazing. Don't forget ya swamp water. I was in love with this place AT FIRST because It has a nice atmosphere, nice waitress, food came out fairly quick and the first bites were delicious. BUT to my disappointment my friend found a small ROACH in their drink.. When we brought the roach to the waitresses attention... her eyes got big and she took the drink to the back & brought out a new one as if nothing happened. She didn't really seem that surprised either and didn't even try to get a manager or anything. I guess she expected us to just continue eating like nothing happened which bothered me a lot. We got up and left immediately without paying & I personally will never be eating here again. I also have a friend who went a day before I did and found a roach in the Mac and Cheese (I didn't know this until I spoke with him after sharing my experience) so please be very careful if you decide to dine here. read more

Took the opportunity to visit for dinner based on the many great reviews. Have to say it was excellent and worth the trip! Sampled the Cajun Salmon bites and the Gumbo to start, and each was spot on, excellent flavor and generous portion size. Mostly great. Ambience is very classy with nice furnishings and soft jazz playing softly. Ordered cup of gumbo and catfish Arcadia. Meal came with choice of house or Caesar salad. I chose the Caesar. Had lettuce, croutons, grated cheese, but no dressing. I needed the greens and managed to eat about a third. Gumbo was very tasty, but had a whole okra pod in it and the only spoon provided was tiny. Held about 1/2 teaspoon. After about 40 spoonfuls, I finished by picking up the cup and drinking the rest. Catfish Arcadia came with two sides and I chose Cajun green bean and dirty rice. The beans, rice, catfish (with crawfish étouffée on top ) were all outstanding. Service was also great. Only reasons for less than five stars were undressed salad and lack of soup spoon. Also no liquor license yet so they just have soft drinks and water. read more

I decided to give this place another try, because I haven't been here in quite a while. I decided to start with the Boudin balls, and they looked wonderful. I really enjoyed the piece of pickled Okra and the candied jalapeno's reminded me of old fashioned pepper jelly. However, the Boudin were just not to my taste. I know they are supposed to be made of pork, so when I cut into mine I was a little concerned that some of the filling appeared pink. Although the flavor was okay, they did have a small kick of spice, I didn't care for the texture. They were very mushy - almost a puree. But, I know that every family supposedly had their own recipe for Boudin so I can't say really attest to authenticity. I can only say that I have had Boudin with a firmer texture and identifiable grains of rice and I preferred that texture to these. Take it as you will. That my reason for losing a star. I wanted to have the red beans and rice but they were out of it, so I ordered a bowl of Gumbo. At almost $13, it was a very small bowl in my opinion. The bowl was pretty small in diameter but deep. Still we eat with our eyes and to my eyes it felt like a cup not a bowl. The restaurant might do well to invest in some shallow bowls that are wider in diameter to reinforce the difference between a "bowl" and "cup". I also tried their Louisana special cocktail, it was happy hour so they were only like $6 instead of $12. Ohh honey, they pack a punch but hey are tasty! I greatly enjoyed the soft jazz playing too. It really helped set the mood and this would be a great place for a date, since it's not so loud that it's hard to have a conversation. read more

This was a very disappointing first time experience. I ordered wings and waited 50 minutes for them to never come out, so I canceled them, because the order was never submitted, nor did anyone check on it until I said that I'd been waiting for 40 minutes. They did a change of shift and we sat at the bar without drinks for at least 20 minutes while the bar tenders talked, made themselves drinks and ordered their own food, without them even acknowledging our presence and there was only 2 of us at the bar, so we couldn't have been overlooked. When we finally decided to address that issue the bar tender's response was "well I didn't know y'all wanted to order anything" Had she asked or even greeted us, she would have known that we did in fact want to order drinks. It was just an overall -5 out of 10 experience and I hate to feel this way about a business owned and operated by people that look like me. read more

While the owners may not put much into advertising, they spare no expense in the quality of the food! The food is authentic to New Orleans, and the beignets taste just as good as what we had in the Big Easy! The Creole Shrimp and Grits were loaded with shrimp, and the grits were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The chicken in the Chicken and Beignets had a touch of heat that was just right. The Salmon Bites appetizer was amazing, and the sauce was delicious. The Crab Cakes were full of crab as opposed to fillers. We met one of the owners, Latoya, who hails from New Orleans, and she is an absolute delight. I highly recommend this taste of New Orleans brought to Columbia by native Louisianans! read more

Don't judge a book by its cover nor a restaurant by its location. It's an older strip mall and not very promising from the outside, but inside it's clean, friendly and delicious. Thankfully the restaurant's take on New Orleans is more Garden District courtyard than the cliche of Mardi Gras. The bar area had an old LSU vs Auburn game on to complete the experience. Our server was delightful. What you're no doubt reading this for though is the food. Well, you won't be disappointed. The fried green tomatoes were wonderful and the gumbo probably was the best I've had in the area. Generous amounts of shrimp, sausage and chicken. Two in our party (one a recent transplant from the Gulf Coast) had the shrimp po' boy and commented they may have been the best shrimp they've had in Columbia. Well seasoned (but not overly so) and cooked perfectly. The fries were awesome too. Red beans and rice (a New Orleans staple) were served with the sausage on the side and were worthy of any restaurant in NOLA. Catfish Acadian (served with crawfish etouffee on top along with dirty rice and garlic broccoli) was delicious and enough for two meals. Finish it off with bread pudding or beignets (or maybe AND beignets) and you will leave a little fatter but very happy. Hope they're around awhile so I can get my Cajun/Creole fix more frequently than I get to travel to NOLA. read more
