I love the large space - loads of tables and nooks and crannies. It's a good neighborhood spot for a beer, to watch a game, or to listen to some music. It's not your standard pub by any means. It's a bar with decent chips I might add. I'm giving it a three as the only downside is it could use a good spring cleaning to get the damp scent out of the air. One of Dublin's oldest pubs, its on every tourist map so do expect hoards of them. I was excited that they served Kilkenny (subsequently slagged by all my work mates for drinking it but no bother). Good ol pub atmosphere, there is a great room upstairs if you are looking to host a a party (just don't dance on the tables, learned the hard way with my colleague that will get you tossed. This is one of my favorites! It's near the action but doesn't share the crowded mania of being directly part of the action. Still a good spot for weekends when clubs aren't the main option. With two floors and a few different rooms, there are plenty of places to sit. It's easy to find your own spot. A friend and I spent an hour or so on the balcony area above the main room and bar. While they don't have the widest variety of beer, they do offer fairly affordable mixed drinks and cocktails. The staff is patient and friendly. Music is not too bad either. Good for groups or to bring visitors who are tired of Temple Bar. read more

I came here on two separate occasions during my visit to Dublin. Now that I think about it, I had my first and one of the last meals in Dublin here. The very first time I ordered traditional Irish stew and a fancy cocktail. The Bleeding Horse differs from most other pubs because it offers quite an extensive list of fancy cocktails which are relatively inexpensive (RELATIVELY). During my second visit I ordered Indian curry (yes I know, but it was the end of trip and I was homesick - no, I'm not Indian either). The curry was relatively spicy as I had anticipated but I do wish they'd give me more than one small piece of naan with my meal. This time around I also ordered a fancy cocktail, a different one (even had a slice of cucumber in the glass). Both instances I paid around 9 euro for each drink (compared to 12 euro and above at the Temple Bar). There are two floor levels to this pub but keep in mind that there is a reason why the upper level is empty -- it gets extremely hot and stuffy up there (this was a problem for me because I happened to be in Ireland during history-breaking hot temperatures). There is plenty of seating both outside, inside and upstairs so don't worry about securing the perfect nest! The meals were reasonably priced (cheaper than most other pubs) and were tasty. It is located in the middle of "nowhere" so to say, thus the competitive prices make sense. Overall, I had a good experience here and recommend you give this place a try yourself! read more

I cannot underestimate the size of this place. We wanted to find a place to sit so we kept walking and walking (not in a bad way) and there were a bunch of nice little nooks for small groups to sit in. Played a mix of 80s/90s music because it was Gir Night (I don't see the correlation) which was nice and different from most places. Drink prices were good--less than 5 for vodka tonic! read more

The Guinness stew was the winner of the lunch break! We had the wings and the steak sandwich. Also an order of potato skins, and the bacon cheeseburger which my son inhaled so we couldn't judge on taste! The stew won hands down. I've started one or two nights in the Bleeding Horse and met friends for some celebration or other in here. It's a good spot for groups because there are a number of floors and corners to hide away in. It's also a handy number because it's right en route into town. If you get in early enough you can nab a table and settle yourself here for a while as we did at a friend's leaving do. It's comfortable enough and when they pump up the music a little later, you can create your own dance floor anywhere there's space. I've never stayed here for a whole night but it's decent enough if you want a place to get things going in. Not all that memorable or exceptional though, just grand. read more

My new favorite pub in the whole world! We went to the Bleeding Horse every night we were in Dublin and the only way I can describe it is that it's the best of the old and the new. The pub itself has been in existence since the 1600s, and the building is really cool. But they play great music, have lots of TVs and probably more of a 'bar' atmosphere than some of the more traditional pubs in Dublin. The lights are dim, the furnishings are pretty new and the decor is pretty new too. We also ate there twice and the food was good. typical bar fare, but a great menu of it. Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick's all on draft. Friendly bartenders and a friendly clientele, and it's open late. What more could you want? read more

I was referred to this pub by friends who said it was a great after work pub. I personally would give it a miss for the following reasons: -The service was slow even when it wasn't busy. - I ordered food and it was cold and a tiny portion for the price. I was going to share the burger and chips with my friend (as I had asked the server in advance if it was enough to share) and it was a tiny burger (dry meat) and a small cup size of chips. I ordered a bowl of soup for something extra and it came cold and overly salted. - The food is overpriced for the value and quality. My attention from the bar staff was fair. Again, it was a slow time of the day, so I don't know what it is like personally during a busy evening. If you want to go to a pub for food, this is not one to try. If you're looking for a place to crash with friends after work or watch sports, then it might be worth a pint, but I think I've been to better. read more

Terrible. Don't order the Guinness. Was in the area waiting for concert to start in Iveagh Gardens and couldn't resist dropping in to such a famous pub for a pint. The pint was atrocious. Certainly the worst pint I've had all year. I can not remember another time that I left half a pint behind me. It was muck! Should have checked out the toilets first and would have saved myself the experience. Urine was walked out into the lounge area from toilet floors that were awash. Sheets of wet tissue littering the toilet floor. Will go back again - the week after hell freezes over. read more

Holy Moly.... This place is HUGE!!! It is a labyrinth of stairs and walk ways all leading to back to the bar.... not that this is a bad things. Full of plenty of places to sit and chat with a large group of friends, corners to make out in, teles to watch the game on it really has something for everyone. Was there on a game night, I think it may have been a rugby match, and what a whole lot of fun awesome it was. Managed to get a seat at the bar with my housemate so we could chat, watch the game, and check out all the pretty which had come out for the game. ... Been here a few times years back however recently visited for a few after work drinks and this place was great fun. The inside is spacious enough, it's little bit like nooks all about the place meaning there's not a lot of wide open space for larger groups but as a group of like 10 or so, we got ourselves some outdoor seating with was great fun. The atmosphere was really good, a decent blend of people and not at all pretencious, just a really good casual spot. The bar service was quick and staff super friendly, ok to have a laugh with. It's a great after work drink spot but also has TV's dotted around making it a great place for watching sport. The have a bar food menu which is decent and priced well so not a place I always think about when it comes to grabbing a bit though must start noting this place! read more

I didn't even know they had Yelp in other countries. Anyway, spent 2 nights in Dublin a few summers back and ended up here both nights. First was for drinks before going to a rave down the street. Was jet-lagged but threw back some beers and had a great time. Second was a more extended stay for the England vs. USA World Cup match. I will never forget singing the Star Spangled Banner with a bunch of ex-pats and honorary Americans in this place, nor for...well let's just say the rest of the night got interesting after this point... read more

We ordered at the same time but they were cool enough to let us pay separately! Also, I got the full Irish and they let me sub out the pudding (I loathe pudding) so that's an automatic win! read more

Quite spacious and a typically Irish pub - they show sports events here so might get quite loud for a casual friendly chat. Also they have awesome gluten free beer, try Hambleton's lager. It tastes awesome and has an amazing citrus aftertaste. read more

I used to frequent The Bleeding Horse when I was in college, and it used to be, what I would call 'an old mans pub.' I was never hugely impressed with it and it was always where all the lads used to want to go, never the girls. But I went here a couple months ago and it was actually really good! They have a new-ish smoking area and the place was really lively and full of young people dancing and having a great time. I guess with its close location to Harcourt St, it's a good spot for a few drinks before hitting one of the nightclubs on the newly popular street. I have to say, it changed my opinion of the place and I would gladly go back. read more

I have to write a review for the Bleeding Horse even though the last time I was here was 2002. Why? because I still recall it with fond, fond memories. I hope that wasn't just beer goggles. I lived in Dublin for 2 months in 2002. When not busy bringing corporate America over to Ireland and schlepping in the office all day I could be found at the Bleeding Horse. Well, either that or Hartigans. I recall one day upon arrival at the office to find that the computers we had ordered had not arrived. Unable to work my co-worker and I decided that we should head over to the Bleeding Horse to wait it out.. We checked back at the office every couple of hours to see if the computers had arrived. So we felt like we were 'working' but mostly we spent that first week working out our pint lifting muscles. This was back in the day when smoking was still allowed and the place was smoke filled. Didn't mind though. I spent most of my time upstairs where if memory serves was full of little nooks and crannies with a table crammed in that you could basically hide in. I don't recall many tourists at that time. It was definitely a local pub filled with old men and some university age kids. Mostly men. I was often the only girl in the place. Next time I make it to Dublin I'm absolutely going to go back here. It's just one of those places that lives with you, you can't stop talking about it and you can't wait to get back to. read more

The Bleeding Horse is an old English Style pub in Upper Camden Street. The name apparently came about from the practise of farriers cutting a vein in the neck of horses who had arrived from a long ride (the pub was at the end of the road into Dublin through the townlands of Rathmines). This was a common means of reducing the horse's blood pressure and calming them after a ride. The Bleeding Horse has been in existence since 1649, after all. There are three levels in this pub, and its full of cubby holes and snugs, perfect for a date or a group can hang out in the larger bar area. They have TVs on the wall which are turned up for the matches, otherwise the sound is down. I think alot of people come here for a few drinks at the weekend and then head on to clubs, but, I was there on Saturday night and they have vamped up the place considerably; there are flat screen tvs in the bathrooms, and disco lights in the bars with louder chart music playing. It seems like The Bleeding Horse does not want people to see them as just a stopping point before the club and is aiming to get people to stay for the entire night. This pub has always been popular none the less but I wonder are they ruining it with the flashing disco lights on a Saturday night? read more

The BH was my go-to pub during my time in the Green Isle. Always friendly mates to find at the bar who are interested in Americans and never reveal whether they are mocking you with that dry Irish wit. Good drinks, good conversation, good pub. The Bleeding Horse is THE place to watch sports games in Dublin. The staff is really kind and will change the channel for you to watch your favorite match (as the televisions are well distributed through the different areas you won't disturb the other customers). The smoking area is big and comfortable but a little cold. The food is good, above the average pub food with some really nice pizza and soup. I really didn't like the pub on Thursday and Friday nights though, it gets crowd and it's a weird place between a night club and a pub. No place to sit but no area to dance. It's a much better place to have a pint in a calm week day or in the evening before the night. The staff is really nice and attentive. The prices are average. read more

We listened to some great performers including Ollie Cole who is a pretty famous song writer in Dublin. Came in here after the inaugural Yelp breakfast! Still fuming after the experience. I was in a very good humour entering to watch the football and meet one of the lads. I was on a little bit of a cafeine buzz after all the coffee I drank in Odessa but other than that I was looking foward to football and and pub I like. I ordered a pint of Carlsberg off the guy at the bar who was chatting to the old men at the bar and treated me with contempt for wanting a drink. First pint was okish. Second pint was the wateriest and lifeless Ive had in a long time. I hate complaining. Cant stand doing it and hate the confrontation. However I went up to the same guy and said that it was a bit flat. "Doesnt look flat to me" "I just thought it was. Taste it!" "Dont have to taste it", sneering the whole time. Poured the pint down the sink looking at the men at the bar and tried to make me look like an idiot. If it wasnt a civilized society that goateed, superior and mistaken barman would have his lights punched out. I work in the service industry. Last night a woman slammed her hand down on the table in the o2 members clubs and had the guy serving her in an awful fluster. When I went to talk to her she said she understood I was concerned but that the barmen were not doing their job. Her other friend started literally shouting and stomping her feet at Luke (floor staff) who was serving her. Luke got very flustered and started panicking she was treating him so badly. We gave those women the best service we could and looked after Luke so that he was ok. Luke had even organised the other floor staff to sing happy birthday to a member in their group and the service had been excellent. They were being rude. All I was looking for was a replacement pint. I would do it without thinking were I serving. I know when a pint is flat aslo and that was flat. Great football match. It was Birmingham v Bolton btw Annie and Gill. Stoke playing next week;-) That was another thing when I asked him was that the FA cup quarter final he said I dont know like I had 3 heads. Still a little hyper. Those Yelp cards came in very handy. Stayed at the Camden Court Hotel right next door so this was definitely convenient for us! It was a large pub with quite a few nooks for you to sit down in. I enjoyed the back of the bar on the first floor the most. A decent selection of beer and always a "beer" special advertised. (i.e. 4 beers for 10 Euro) Not too shabby. Pretty good music, plus they advertised a "Gir" (Invader Zim) night. Always brownie points in my book. Can definitely get busy on a weekend night. read more

This is a really nice big pub that as been around forever! It attracts a mixed crowd but never a rowdy one. Always a good fun friendly atmosphere here and a decent pint too. The staff are lovely and proper barmen, not just here to make tips to save for summer holidays. Some of the staff have worked here for years and it shows with the love they have for this place. I visited here of a Saturday night. I was not impressed by the drink served to me. I ordered a Diet Coke and vodka amounting to almost 8euro. The drink itself bared resemblance to a Diet Coke and half measure or less of vodka. I approached staff and was dismissed with "there is alcohol in that". I asked the group who I was with to sample it and each one persuaded me to go back to the counter and mention it to staff. I wouldn't be in a hurry back to the bleeding horse. I celebrated my birthday in here and I should probably deduct stars for the fact that they forgot our booking and didn't have an area reserved for us, which was a bit of a problem since there were about 30 people in our group. But in fairness to them, the staff were fantastic and they managed to find a corner large enough for us upstairs. And I got a drink on the house as an apology. The pub is larger than it looks at first glance because of all the nooks and crannies and it has a great atmosphere. Yes, there is always a few tourists in here but for Rugby matches you get mostly locals and there is a great atmosphere. Was here last night for the launch of the new O'Hara's red Ale. Great location and a great feeling inside. Lively, full of little nooks and crannies and a roaring fire in the corner (I'm a big fan of fires!) O'Haras had done a great job with providing beer and live music which made the atmosphere here quite buzzing! After having sampled some of the beer I decided I needed to be fed and was impressed with the options on offer. I settled for the ribs to go perfectly with the beer. Who doesnt love a good rib! Sadly this was where the happiness ended. The ribs arrived and looked too good to be true. Big chunks of meat lay on the plate tempting me to eat but as I went to pick it up disaster struck. Where was the rib?!? Where was the actual bone to which you pick up and gnaw the tasty meat from around??? No no... this was a big hunk of soft fat attached to some meat with a small bone in the corner. The small bit of meat I did get from the plate was tasty (although the BBQ sauce definitely needed more of a kick) but as it was dark in there I couldnt tell which mouthful was meat and which was fat. And trust me when you have a mouthful of that you know about it. Soft, squidgy and utterly disgusting. And when in company you really cant spit it out. Not pleasant guys..... read more
