Great food, great service, cool environment! 30 minute drive and off the beaten path for us but well worth it

Mixed experience, I had the catfish ,which was perfectly cooked, but the mashed potatoes were served cold -- not hot, not warm, not cool, but cold. The desserts, White Chocolate pie and Peach Cobbler were delicious. Service was spotty. The server did not refill the drinks once in an approximate 75 minute visit even with the empty glasses in the middle of the table. read more

Although the table was more sticky than a rodent's glue trap, this place was great. Awesome food followed by a great cobbler. The restaurant is beautifully decorated for an amazing atmosphere and even the bathrooms were impressive. Our waitress was rather surly which was unfortunate but I'd definitely come back and recommend to others. read more

What can I say? Eat here a lot and never have a bad meal! Cute little place and I really wanted to love it, I did! I'd say 3.5 stars to be honest. We went on a Saturday evening in the winter time, at about 6PM. It really wasn't busy. Two families there, we made it 3, one of the families was a larger one. But they were done and getting ready to leave. We were sat immediately, no waiting. It took them forever to get us some drinks. Luckily my daughter got her water in a timely fashion but the beer and sweet tea lagged majorly! Took forever to take our order and even longer to get it. We ended up being late for our daughters tournament down the street. After we told her we now needed our food to go, she claimed "oh I am sorry, we just got so slammed." There was no one in this place, it was not slammed at all, not even close. Many, many open tables. My husbands fries weren't done and he finished the burger by the time they showed up. We ordered a to go meal for our daughter at the tournament and that wasn't ready either, had to wait way longer than we should have for that. The cooks weren't even really working, they were meandering around and one was constantly saying, "I don't want to be here!" I don't know if this was a joke or a song she had stuck in her head... but odd, given our lack of good service. The waitress was polite! But didn't make much sense as to why everything took so long! The food was decent. A bit pricy and their burgers don't come with fries or chips, odd. The menu was limited. The sandwich I got was very good and the gouda cheese made it! But I wasn't overly impressed for the price and lack of timely service. We live in Danville and came for a tournament at the local school there. Beautiful place! But I hope the service improves. OUTSTANDING. This place is amazing. The food is so good and fresh. Even though the fried chicken sandwich isn't on the menu (it should be) it is the best chicken sandwich in America. The homemade chips are amazing, get the Dyno sauce with them. I have not had a bad meal here ever. When they have steak for supper, it is my go to place. The best steak I have ever had in my life. I've been here countless, literally countless times over the years but I have yet to post an actual review. The new menu has some great additions that are definitely worth a try. Thankfully they kept lots of items from the previous menu! Fried green tomato appetizer is so good it's almost addicting. Eat as an app or for lunch. Who cares! The burgers are great - Southwest being my favorite. These aren't squished, dry, tiny burgers either. They're fresh and hand-pattied pretty thick. Great seasoning. Order the burger cooked to your temperature preference and enjoy. Salads are fresh, portioned well and served with great dressings. Caesar dressing is legit. How it's supposed to be made, nothing like the preserved gloop you buy in stores. Lunch specials are something to keep an eye on as they change regularly. Today I had spaghetti bolognese made from San Marzano tomatoes, beef and pork, served with melted mozzarella and fresh basil on top. SO good. Basil is literally picked from the garden behind the restaurant. Fresh means fresh. Desserts are worth saving room for. Even down to their chocolate chip cookies. I placed a carry out order. I ordered the cheddar and shrimp grits. The menu said cheddar grits. I got plain grits with 5 shrimp. This was a carry out order, and the girl was extremely inattentive. She didn't even have our order ready to go, it was sitting under the warmer lights. So after she finally found it, she was so slow boxing it up , I asked someone to help her. She was busy staring at the customers and the cooks, while she just flailed with our containers. The girl never even said thank you or sorry for your wait. We are new to this area. Nestled in the center of Kentucky, this gem is worth the drive. Plus, it's located in the quaint downtown area of one of the cutest and most hospitable small towns I've ever visited. Plan for a little sightseeing and shopping before and after your meal. They serve Baxter's coffee from Somerset, KY. The waitress told me they receive the beans within a week of being roasted and grind them fresh before brewing. I had a decaf drip and drank the bottomless cup until my stomach would no longer expand. The coffee is enough to earn them five stars. For our late lunch, we tried the fried green tomatoes, spinach artichoke dip and the bluebird chips to share for starters. I liked them all, but vegetarians beware of the ham mousse lying beneath the tomatoes. The dynamite sauce served with the chips would make a perfect complement to many of the dishes on the menu, so order a side for your sandwich or your fries. The spinach artichoke dip was creamier than many I've had and served with crostini instead of the regular tortilla chips. The waitress made sure we had plenty of chips and crostini to scoop up all our sauces. I ordered the house quesadilla for my entree and had to pick the chicken out since I didn't read the menu carefully enough. It was delish. Though it's hard to criticize the Bluebird, I always like to offer my recommendations for improvement. While they might not have a lot of vegetarian visitors, they should offer a few more meatless selections. Everything seems to be laden with bacon. I really wanted to try the pimiento cheese, but I was disappointed to learn it was pre-made with hog bits. Despite the porkification of the menu, I'm already planning my next visit. read more

Went here a week and a half ago for breakfast. We had heard good things and wanted to try it out. We walked away with mixed feelings about the Blue Bird Cafe. Restaurant is modern chic with stainless steel and exposed brick, but still has charm and a small town coziness appeal. Our waitress was very friendly and service was great. I ordered the blue bird omelet described on the menu as "A Clark Farm egg omelet with onions, peppers, and Marksbury sausage. Topped with smoked gouda cream sauce and skillet potatoes. Served with a buttermilk biscuit." I also ordered a side of gravy to go with my biscuit. Hubby ordered the Stanford Denver Omelet described as "Smoked Marksbury ham, sautéed onions and peppers, cheddar and monterey jack cheeses in a Clark Farm egg omelet. Served with a buttermilk biscuit." He also ordered a side of bacon. I love that the Blue Bird utilizes the farm to table concept. There is pride in knowing that you are eating locally sourced food while supporting local businesses. That being said, I would think that local means lower cost. Not the case here. For me, the biggest disappointment is the menu pricing. Because they are different, I hate to compare a small local cafe to a chain restaurant. However, if I'm paying $10 for an omelet, I expect to get a $10 size omelet like the ones you find at IHOP. About my food: The sausage in the omelet was different but I liked it. There really wasn't anything amazing about the omelet itself. I am a huge Gouda fan, so I was excited to taste the smoked Gouda sauce. Sadly, it was just okay. Then I got to the potatoes. Holy moly! They were GOOD!! I'm not much of a potato person, and I don't know what the chef does to these potatoes but I would've been a happy girl to just get a plate of those! I saved my biscuit & gravy for last. The gravy was a lot thicker than I'm used to, and I did need to add salt & pepper for my taste but it worked and I loved it! And that biscuit. Wow! There was a mild crispy-crunch on the outside and it was pillowy soft on the inside. Perfect! Hubby was not so enthused about his omelet. He said the ham surprisingly tasted as if it was country ham. It may have been, because other than "smoked," it wasn't specified on the menu. He was highly disappointed with the price/portion ratio as well. He felt like $4 for two slices of bacon on the side was much (it was), but especially since the bacon was not thick cut. It was two puny pieces of bacon for what you pay for a pound of in the store!! We ordered two slices of white chocolate pie and two coffees to-go. Two $10 omelets, a coffee, a sparkling water, a side of gravy, a $4 side of pathetic bacon, two $4 slices of pie and two (small) coffees.... Our bill was $50!!! It was the most expensive breakfast we've ever had! This is incredibly disappointing because I love supporting local businesses. However, at $50 a meal, especially breakfast (cheapest meal of the day), who can afford to make it a habit? We may be back, we may not. read more

Fantastic, fresh , locally sourced produce.. did I mention grass fed beef? We had the bluebird chips as a starter. Thin cut fried potato goodness served with three incredible sauces. I could drink the gouda cheese sauce! Ben the pastry chef knows his business. The bourbon white chocolate pie was insanely good. Pecan pie can be rich but dear friends this pie was far from it. Ribbons of white chocolate kissing the crust with tasty pecans floating in an amber gelatin . Oh my! A true gem. Get yourself to The bluebird. Friendly and attentive staff. We visited this nice little restaurant on a Saturday evening. We were greeted nicely by the hostess. Our waitress took our drink order and we received them in a timely manner. We ordered two burgers with tater tots. I highly recommend the burger. Delicious. We never received service from our waitress Riley again. She did a lot of standing around. I had to go to the counter and ask for my own drink. We waited 20 minutes for our bill. I went to the counter and asked for a manager. The manager was quick to respond and our server brought the bill quickly and unfriendly. She never spoke to us. No apology or thank you. Great food but good service is needed. read more

The Bluebird looks very modern and "uptown." I was impressed by the statement on the front of Bluebird's menu that they strive to serve sustainable, locally sourced food. I ordered a Bluebird Burger. Fortunately, it is made of grass-fed beef and doesn't actually contain bluebirds. The burger was very good, and cooked exactly as I requested it. It was served on a house-baked bun (a very nice touch). The Bluebird serves freshly brewed iced tea, and it is delicious. The only negative in my opinion, and it may be nitpicking a little, is that during my visit, there were quite a few tables covered with dirty dishes although the diners had gone. Took an afternoon trip to Stanford to check out the Bluebird. Enjoyed the corn bread and pork rind appetizers. Hubby had the fish and chips and was very happy. Not greasy and very flakey. I had the pork chop with grits and pea medley. Also very good. We'd be delighted to go again. Not crazy about the bread pudding, but that's likely more a personal taste. Had to send it back and ask to warm it up. A hot brown does not have cheese queso, cold cherry tomatoes. Wife had a pasta dish, lukewarm. Chicken very tough. I think it had the same cheese queso. Friends of our have been raving about this place for a while. Today was finally our chance to try it for ourselves. Overall very pleased with the experience. The staff was awesome. Really liked the ambience. And the food was wonderful. They have a pretty good menu with lots variations on burgers. I'm very picky when it comes to burgers and fries, and this place is exceptional. The only thing I'd like to see is a better kid's menu. I was very surprised they didn't have any kid's burgers or pasta. That would have made our experience 5 stars.
