That was looking iffy at best (as was my prospects for a shower lasting longer than two minutes). Nasty, smelly water was coming up from under our downstairs toilet. Greg came right over to see if he could determine the issue. He also came again the next day when he had more time to try to fix it (and a bigger snake). Unfortunately, the snake was coming up shiny -- I learned this was a sign of pipe breakage (snake travels through gravel, gravel scrapes off the grime). Greg will explain what he's up to every step of the way and what you're up against. In this case, he had to go under the house to the scary little crawl space with a small shovel to see if he could get to the breakage. When he determined the broken pipe segment was too deep to be accessed by one person, he put down the shovel and picked up his phone. It was at this point I learned how well-networked he is. The first specialist he called came right over with a high-tech camera. It was inconclusive to determine the location of the break, but did confirm there was one. Next up was a call to the "digging plumbers" who came the next day with little shovels, found the breakage and fixed it in under five hours. My experience with all the specialists he called in was great, the issue got fixed and Thanksgiving was saved. Even though he spent two afternoons at my house, he didn't charge me anything close to his normal rate on the premise that he couldn't fix it himself (it was the first time I ever argued with someone to charge me more). He called to follow up a few days later to make sure everything was A-OK (a sign of total class in my book). Now, if you are new to this owning a home thing like me, you may be thinking, if he couldn't fix it himself, why the glowing review? It's a bit like a medical practice. Your primary care physician calls in specialists, why shouldn't your plumber? Greg seems to get the notion that you are the company you keep and those good relationships helped save our holiday. I am hugely grateful. Since my experience with homeownership is that sh** happens (this time, literally), it's good to have someone you trust on speed dial. He's great in an emergency, and no matter how miserable you're feeling in the moment, he will make you laugh.

It's now close to 2:00pm on a Friday and I'm worried about who I can get out here on short notice... and how much this is going to cost me. I searched for a few plumbers based on reviews and proximity, and Dave from Drain Kings was one of them. Dave's very nice wife answered the phone and she informed me he was currently at a job, but would call him. He was at my place within an hour and a half. He came out anticipating a snake job but after diagnosing he found a substantial clog in my pipes and got elbows deep into a big mess and cleared it all out. He saved me $100 dollars on the call. He easily could have snaked the lines and charged me much more, but he was upfront and honest. He gave me some tips on how to prevent future clogs, and guaranteed his work for ninety days. Meaning if a snake is needed in the future the price will be offset by the charges from the work already performed. He was fun to speak with throughout the process too. I would definitely use Drain King again. I witnessed firsthand that the guy knows his shit. And I mean that literally.

Not really a big deal, but none of this was mentioned and I had to figure it out myself and complained being concerned it would impact the life of the water heater (it probably doesn't). Was offered 100$ back and a one year extension to the warranty. I thought that was reasonable after being re-assured it wouldn't impact the life of the water heater. 5-6 years later it's leaking and we call up asking about the warranty and there is no memory of it. That's fine I guess. I don't think a total replacement for free is warranted here since the expected life really isn't that long anyways. This my story and I don't think it's a 5 star experience, but neither is it a 1 star experience. I assume they wouldn't work with me anymore anyways because no one likes difficult customers for some definition of difficult. That said If you need something done I think Skill Pro would indeed get it done.
