Recently came here for a friend's birthday party in one of the private rooms. Good thing too, as the main room was packed for an event. Rooms are comfortable with a pretty easy to use karaoke system and the ac works incredibly well. I do think the private rooms are a little pricey and space is limited once it gets busy. Also getting drinks in the main room can be a bit of a chore. Overall it can be a little hit or miss here, and you're mileage may vary. read more

The whole group had a blast!my only gripe is how crowded it gets in the public area which makes it impossible to go anywhere. The private room is not private-- you can hear everything from the main room. It's $40 plus tax PER HOUR for a tiny room that there's not room to move around in. Visited Boombox for a friend's birthday. We rented a private room. Super fun! Spent about three hours in the room, going in and out to grab drinks at the bar. You can queue songs on an app, or directly from the monitor under the TV's. Our room was super clean and you can adjust the volume/bass to your liking. The cocktails we tried were also pretty good. I love karaoke, and this has to be one of the best places I've been. They have private rooms, but the party is at the front. I came with a group of ~8 around 10. It wasn't too packed yet, so we got a sign up for a few songs. Once more folks started coming in, the selection got even better. Think emo prom meets 90s classics vibe. I will say the front area is not huge, but it didn't feel super crowded either. It was only $1 for sign up for a song, which I haven't seen at other karaoke bars (usually free with a drink) but was not ridiculously priced. the drinks were also reasonably priced. Had the It's Blue drink priced at $12, was pretty good and strong so some bang for your buck. The rim and tequila were A1. On street parking can be tough, I paid for 2hr Parking at garage right next door for $10. Soooo... the woman Bartender w/the bandana was unfriendly af like she didn't want to serve us. We were next in line and waiting patiently for our turn just chatting next to each other and she didn't make any kind of eye contact, acknowledge us, or look up and had demeanor of a grumpy goober... so much that the line behind us tried to cut in front of us as they thought the female bartender had helped us already since the female bartender hadn't acknowledged us and they thought we ordered already... sheesh! I can understand they're Prbly busy later on in the night and swamped as I only saw 2 Bartenders but the place wasn't busy yet. I was there Friday from 9-10pm. She def didn't want to help us. ANYWHO, the male bartender might've caught the vibe as he seemed like he was waiting for her to assist us and she didn't ... he said hi and acknowledged us, was pleasant and we had no issues. I came to Providence from out of state for Comic Con, and I had a free evening before the event. I saw this place not too far away from my hotel, and karaoke at something I like to do for fun. So I went over and checked it out. When I walked in, it was pretty empty at first but more people showed up as the night went on. While it was slow, the bartender, Grace, was very social, and kept me company while we were waiting for the later crowds. The song selection they have is unbelievable. It's one of the biggest karaoke libraries I've seen. I love how much a variety they have for songs to sing. I also really liked that they had a Lounge where you can sing at other than just renting a private room, (which they do have as well). The drinks they have there are very reasonably priced, and as more people showed up as the night went on, the more fun I had. Even if you don't like to sing, it's a nice place to hang out and socialize. I recommend anyone who's looking for something to do in the evening, go to this place in Providence. Such a fun time! They have a lounge with a bar plus private rooms you can book for you and your group. They have a huge amount of songs and an easy app to connect to with your own phone to browse their selection. The rooms have great lights and soundproofing, so you can truly have your own little party! Great drink options, and you can bring your own food/snacks. Everyone working there was very kind, they took a few minutes to show us how everything worked. Would definitely recommend! So fun for a girls night out. read more

We had the best time in our private karaoke room I reserved for my 56th bday. There were 6 of us in a room for 10 max and we were very comfortable. The equipment was simple to understand and they let us stay a little later since we got there a little late. The cocktails were delicious- especially the one that comes in a ceramic cat mug. My newest PVD obsession is The Boombox, and I'll tell ya why. Not only is this place AMAZING - a little bar with red lights and an awesome menu of sake-based cocktails served in cat glasses (!!!!), but also they boast the largest selection of show tunes at any karaoke place I've ever been to. And I've done many a sing off! I stumbled upon this diminutive spot after a work dinner at North, the fantastic Asian-fusion restaurant right down the hall, and it's been a fave ever since! Oh yes, The Boombox is nestled right inside of downtown Providence's newest boutique hotel, The Dean, but the prices in this joint are anything but gouging. Songs cost a buck, and they do accept debit cards. The cocktail menu consists of the aforementioned sake concoctions, as well as local canned beers and Yacht Club sodas, made right down the road in North Providence. Nothing like belting out some "Cabaret" and whetting your vocal cords with a Diet Cola afterward! The bartender is awesome, and very personable, and there's always a fun group of people in the main area to make friends with while you wait to sing. They also rent out private rooms if you have a bunch of pals who want to belt out tunes in the privacy of your own velvet-upholstered booth. Lets start by saying karaoke is not my thing. It is my husband's and seeing him happy makes me happy. Boombox is a cool little lounge that offers five private rooms and one communal lounge area. The private rooms range in price depending on size, and are all reasonably priced. Drinks are cheap enough and it's only a buck a song. Paving the way in Providence as the city's only private room style karaoke venue is The Boombox, an intimate, small'ish lounge tucked away at the basement level of The Dean Hotel. Providence's downtown tends to become a ghost town in the wee hours, but the night owls can scream / sing to their hearts content here without disturbing the peace. It's not uncommon to see the gringo-esque "kariokey" joints (a la public singing) throughout any city, but The Boombox gets major points for pushing something that may feel foreign for many (but *fun* for all!). The lounge / lobby area is a public area for all to sing and then there are handful of private rooms for groups who want to sing amongst themselves. Inside the rooms, the system is a touchpad driven interface and sound system is very clear. The seats are clean and don't seem completely worn down from previous parties (#1). The song selection is super English friendly, which in these parts, is all one can really ever ask for without attracting the international crowd. For the fellow hip hop lovers out there, the songs are usually mainstream and most are expectedly censored for language. The rooms will vary from 10-20 people each, which is a good size for most people are who willing to do this thing. It ranges from $40-80 an hour but just remember that any activity before 9pm is half off. Come for happy hour and stay awhile. Maybe sing a little (ahem, a lot) too. One thing I am not so fond of is their decor. The redlight look seems like a slight nod to the venue's torrid past as a brothel (#2) but the look isn't very camera friendly. Moreover, the Asian art pieces they have hanging up invokes all sorts of cringe, but tolerable in a way I suppose. Beware of the "mandatory gratuity" that is typically imposed on big groups, which depending on service or issues with the establishment should be subjective at best. ___________ (#1) Very common problem in the noraebang / Asian setup. No food, great atmosphere with a couple stars off for the atmosphere emitted from the service side of the bar. I absolutely love this place in spite of the establishment. I've been here a few times and this time, after buying a few drinks around the bar, I settled up with what I thought was a reasonable $10 tip on a $71 tab (14% which is lower than my usual but justified). The bartender, who is a white woman, with straighter (not curly) hair like her coworker, who complained about how busy she was while she fumbled around drinking shots with her friends and holding her patrons hostage while she scream-sang to the bar as a karaoke member while (only rationally) she could've been catching up with service. Meanwhile, her timid (understandably), coworker massaged the cut lime wedges in the canister that were ready to be served, who told me he couldn't have served me because she was the only one who could serve drinks, while she struggled to enter 6 numbers into a seemingly windows vista computer for the karaoke (like we don't have technology that can alleviate that very complicated procedure for her) complained about my 14% tab for her horrific service. I tipped her an additional $100 and i hope she shared it (with the...kitchen?), however she processed it immediately and quietly asked me to my ear (prior to this she had me to yell to her throughout the night to order my drinks) if I was sure about the tip... i'm not confident in her generosity... I'll be back and when I am, I hope literally anyone else is serving. read more

We booked a reservation for 11:30 pm on their website. When we got there at 11:30 pm, they said, "oh we overbooked you, it's going to be 20 something more minutes." We waited another 20 something minutes and at this point it's 12:05 am. The bartender said, "I said 20-something minutes." With an attitude and no apology. This was on a Friday night and I had 15 people with me and I booked the 16 person room for $60 an hour. Not to mention, the place was so packed I was getting bumped left and right. It was a bait and switch move. The booking system is horrendous. The patrons were also annoying with their lack of respect. For that, I will not return because they are unorganized and the bartender that was in charge of the rooms and booking was a total a-hole she will not provide a resolution for us. What an embarrassment that was since we came from Florida to visit and we gathered 15 people to come here to be disappointed. I will not recommend this to my friends and family. I had no idea about this spot until a friend brought me! I've literally never done karaoke (despite being someone who sings all the time) and I was pretty impressed with this place! We didn't reserve a room, but we were able to snag a room for a group of 10 that never showed up. The private rooms (must show ID after 9pm) run for minimum $40 an hour, I believe. There's also a public lounge option outside the rooms by the bar if you don't mind the world seeing you sing It was super entertaining being able to hear other groups enjoy themselves in other rooms and outside while having the privacy of our room. They have two book options available with songs listed alphabetically by Artist and by Title. I prefer to go by artist because the other can get super overwhelming. Their song selection is pretty vast! I was thoroughly impressed with the selection. When it was time to leave, service was a tad slow. We didn't even order drinks, but it took over 5 minutes to cash out. I definitely want to try this place again with a larger group of friends! read more

Always a good time and a great place to become a "regular" of. If Annalise is working, you're in for a real treat because she get's on the mic from time to time and absolutely kills it. It was late on a Saturday night, so of course it was extremely crowded, and I came with only two friends, so we didn't bother renting out a room. The wait was long for our songs, the drink selection was very limited (beer and saki), and the floor was an absolute mess, slippery and sticky with spilled drinks and seats being pushed around by the throng of dancing guests. Located within dean hotel, it's sort of nestled in the back but also has a side entrance of its own. Came here on a weekend with friends to karaoke and was packed. The place itself is kind of small and slightly cramped. They have 4 or 5 rooms in the back besides the main hall as well for groups. Drink selection is ok, the kitten mug drink is sure to give you a hangover. Boombox is the bomb dot com. For the record, I generally avoid karaoke like the plague -- the idea of being in a bar of raging drunkards belting out Journey and Bon Jovi all night gives me conniptions. If that is what you want, for the love of god, please don't come to Boombox. Boombox is cool karaoke, with a tongue-in-cheek nod to Japanese/Korean karaoke joints: private rooms, sake/soju cocktails, a nice selection of my favorite silly snacks (Hi-Chew, Pocky, etc.), and some racist bathroom art (forgivable, I guess). The overall vibe is red-light-district-meets-RIhanna-dressed-as-geisha. The lighting in all the rooms, including the bathrooms, is bordello red, which I guess makes sense since this building used to be a brothel (the exotifying bathroom art is problematic). I think there are 5 or 6 private karaoke rooms, which range from $40-80/hour (half price before 9PM!!) and seat between 8-15 people. Our room had two mikes, a disco ball, and could comfortably seat maybe 12 people (I think the actual capacity is slightly larger). Anyway, they have a high-tech song selection system that is iPad based, though there are also book sorted by title and artists for you Luddites out there. You can search on the iPad for your song, and it'll pop up on the screen with some totally irrelevant video of SeaWorld or windmills or something. I was pretty impressed by the song selection: the current songs are very up-to-date -- top 40, new R&B, etc., and, and the awesome guy who was helping us out (Donnell?) explained the whole iPad system to us very clearly. It's pretty dummy-proof, and you can queue up to 20 songs on the system. Once you pick out your jam, you can belt it out like Beyonce because the rooms are actually fairly soundproof. If you want, there's also a free-for-all karaoke space next to the bar ($1/song), but then you might actually have to hear Journey. The only reason I'd maaaaaybe dock a star here is that the drinks menu is only wine/beer based -- the cocktails have sake or soju as their main spirit, and while they are all creative and fairly priced (I think most are between $6-9), I kinda want something a little more festive when I'm doing karaoke. But, The Madonna, with sake/passionfruit juice/prosecco/orange blossom water/a lone boba ball, was delicious and fun. Also, there is no waiter service to the rooms, so you need to go out to the bar to get your drinks. Not a big deal, but I figured I'd mention it in the interest of full disclosure. This place is the business, and there's nowhere else like it in Providence. I hope this seriously becomes a group destination for fun people soon, because it still seems to be flying under the radar. First off I rarely leave reviews unless I've had an incredible experience with a location, an employee who deserves recognition or in this case to warn others of some of the absolute horrors of a business. What was suppose to be a birthday celebration ends with being berated with profanity by a rude female bartender with a lazy eye. I can honestly say....and I rarely say this but just clear racism. We had to deal with bouncers coming to our room four times to complain of us having brought soda. OK big deal, we weren't aware so get over it. Now begin the accusations of having brought liquor and it just goes on all night. Pulling my guest out of the room to harass them over and over just ruined the mood for everyone. I'm paying $280 ($80/hr 20 person room for 3 and a half hours) for this...we get not service all night and deal with confrontational encounters with the bouncers all night. After having spent the night dealing with the constant harassment, and the bartender peeking in to our room to "check" on us... time comes to to pay for our bill. I tip a well deserved ZERO for the absolute no service provided and constant harassment to my party guests and I. After which she decides to provide her two cents regarding the no tip provided, calling me a "cheap bastard" and a few other nice things in front of the entire crowd and my guests. It really surprises me how pitiful people in the service industry can be, how can you honestly expect a tip without earning it, or even worse by terrorizing your guests. By the way we bought multiple drinks and tipped with each purchase. Won't be going back to this establishment. This place needs to reconsider hiring new staff. read more

For years I had been aching for a full-time karaoke bar in Providence, and here it is, the Boombox. It's in the refurbished Dean Hotel as a part of a series of small restaurants, bars and efficiency hotel rooms right in the heart of downtown Providence, and it's one of the few places with private karaoke rooms. Five stars for the private rooms. They can be rented by the hour, and they have several rooms to accommodate different sized parties. It's a comfortable room with cushioned seats, two mics, and self-service karaoke through an iPad app. You can line up your songs and even change key on the tunes if you you're an alto who wants to sing Mariah Carey. One star for the main room. (hence the 3 star overall rating) Sadly, the main room is like the DMV of karaoke bars, complete with surly staff and sticky floors. How the system supposedly* works is you go to the bar and pay a $1 and get your song in the queue. (*it never happens this way.) What usually happens is you are ignored for twenty minutes then you get your beer, you pay your $1 for your song, and while you're waiting for your name to come up, you go, "Hey, didn't that girl come in after me?" So you go back to the bar to check, get ignored again, and when finally greeted, they find your slip with name and song wadded under a dirty bar towel. This has happened to me more than once, and maybe it's too much to ask the staff to handle the songs and drinks, and they should hire another person. So until they do, be forewarned if you try your hand at the main room, you will more than likely get shirked, or you will catch the flu from the communal mic. Sing at your own risk or shell out the cash to get a private room with germ-free friends. read more

This first time I tried to visit this place it was a flop. It was slamming on a Saturday night and some friends wanted to hop over here after drinks nearby. It was impossible to move, I couldn't get anywhere close to the bar, so I opted to come back another time and do it right. Rent a room, plan ahead... so much better. Opportunity presented recently and I found myself belting out some Journey in a red-lit, private room with a group of close to 20 friends at the Boombox Karaoke. Parking is a challenge on a Friday night in Providence but once you are there and settled, it is a great time. Private rooms will rent up to 20 people at $80/hr which is a reasonable price if everyone shows (and pays!). The room itself though was VERY crowded at that size so I'd suggest limiting your numbers. It ends up being manageable with people coming and going to the bar, stepping outside, and the like but something to think about before gathering your friends to go. Dress in layers as it will get warm in there as the night progresses and energies escalate as people get brave with their song selections. Download the app or use the provided iPad to request songs. The library is quite extensive... I had no problem picking out a few options. I really enjoyed using the app, made things quick and easy and was a nice troubleshooting feature when the iPad froze up towards the end of the night. If you have not reserved one of the 5 private rooms, there is karaoke out in the main lounge for $1/song after 9pm (Free before!). Drink pricing is standard, their selection... not so standard. Not a bad thing though! Sake-inspired beverages are the only cocktail type beverage they serve. Otherwise there are a number of bottled selections as well as wine-on-tap. I am a customer who visited the bar on the evening of January 26th. I am currently visiting Providence for the first time to pursue grad studies at Brown. There was a woman bartender at the time. When it was my turn, I ordered 1 casamigos on the rocks and 1 beer. I asked what beers do you have and the bartender pointed me to the fridge saying we have all those. I said I will have this one *pointed*. She then went on to make me my tequila and in the meantime she gave me the bill, and I closed it. After she was done with my drink, she gave me the tequilla and went on to help other customers. I waited a bit for the beer then I thought oh probably it is self-serve since it is on the right side of the bar and not behind it exactly. So I went to the fridge to pick the beer, then the bartender runs and says don't you fucking ever do that again, DON't YOU FUCKING DO THAT AGAIN. I am like I am sorry I did not know. She said have you never fucking been to a bar. I am like sorry calm down. And then I said I paid for it, she was like no you didn't. So here is the problem. She charged me 12$ +2$ tips(for the tequila), but she never counted the beer. The receipt only included tequila but there was no list on the receipt. So she attacked me thinking I am stealing (I guess?). Anyway I ended up leaving a 20$ on the bar in the end for the beer and walked away. Now I definitely should have NOT approached the fridge and I did apologize for that right away, but how is it acceptable that a bartender speaks to a customer this way and get away with it? I have been to numerous restaurants and bars in my life, but never has a place's staff addressed a customer this way. I would have expected maybe: "you cannot do that" Or "what are you doing" or "you cannot be here", but to curse a customer this way? How is management okay with that? I asked for a "manager". I am still looking into how to make an official complaint. Avoid this place. Updated review: Katerina relayed my complaint to Ethan, the owner. He just called and said he'd received my feedback and has taken the bathroom posters down! I'm thankful to have been heard and that I that I didn't have to justify myself! By both him and Katerina. However, sexually explicit decorations remain laminated on the bar surface, hang above the bar, as well as on their new T-shirt uniforms. My review will stand until everything is taken down. Money is spent on renovations all the time. The counter could be covered with an opaque laminate, and completed in a few days. The cloth above the bar can be removed in an hour. New shirts can be ordered for $300. We're facing all these sexual scandals right now - from Harvey Weinstein to Dr. Larry Nassar - because people rolled their eyes at small things like these / people have been too scared to blow things out of proportion. I'm not. Many things are gray in life, but sexual objectification is a black and white issue. It's wrong. I truly did have a great experience, and would look forward to having more people - families and friends - experience this without having to be burdened by unwanted sexual exposure and be too uncomfortable to speak up. I'm confident that Ethan and staff will be able to make the right call and move forward. It's 2018. With movements like #metoo and with sexual assault victims speaking out, I'm surprised this design choice was made. And as an Asian American woman, I find this all extremely distasteful, objectifying, and furthering the exotification of Asian women. I had a great time with friends, and we brought a large group. To my knowledge this is the only Karaoke bar in Providence. I have heard of random bars doing Karaoke, but Boombox is the only legit Karaoke bar 7 days a week that I know of and it for sure knows how to do karaoke right. Let me start off by saying Boombox is very small it's as if you stepped into your friend's average sized basement and filled it with almost 60 people. They do stop people from going in once it reaches a limit and thank god they do because it gets PACKED some nights. Basically when you go to Boombox you should have two trains of thought. 1. Do I want to sing in front of 50 or so strangers and my friends? Or 2. Do I want to sing privately with my friends? If you want the first option you have to go up to the bar every time you want to sing and pay the overwhelming fee of...$1 (this is sarcasm). Then you get put on a list that starts with first come first sing rules. So you wait and wait until you see your name come up on the screen, you get tossed a mic, and BOOM it is your time to shine or just drunkenly scream into the mic in front of a bunch of people. Now if you are a more private and reserved singer, well lucky you there is also Option 2. Now I have never done Option 2, so I assume you either call ahead and book the private rooms or you show up early and book the rooms then. I have tried coming to Boombox and bookings the rooms the same night, but they are always full, so I would suggest calling ahead. That way you and your friends can have a private jam sesh all too yourself. They do not serve food that I know of at Boombox and usually have several Beers and drinks you can have. The staff is usually pretty nice and there is one universal bathroom so be prepared to wait if you really gotta go. I always have a good time at Boombox and singing publicly is always a ton of fun because everyone gets into it and if you pick a song everyone loves you are basically a rock star so live it up. read more

This review is directed at whoever was working the bar from 7-9pm on 11/12/23. I've come to boombox before and had a good experience but this lady made our night awful. It started when she wouldn't accept my friend's out of country ID from Botswana. Like, okay sure, whatever. Then she took my friends out of state ID from Maine and said that she needed some other form of ID because "it didn't feel real". Like okay, weird, but she gave verification. Then one of my other friends said she wasn't drinking and the lady at the bar said that she still needed to see ID and also required verification because it was out of state. Maybe this doesn't sound weird individually, but my friends who got carded were either Black or mixed race, and here's the kicker: I as a white person with an out of state ID did NOT get asked for extra verification, and my sister who was UNDERAGE and also white, NEVER GOT ASKED FOR HER ID AT ALL. Boombox Karaoke is a very fun place if you're looking for a night out in Providence. Located right in the heart of Downtown Providence, Boombox is a great place for any group of friends to drink and sing their hearts out for the night. When you first arrive to Boombox, you'll be immediately greeted by a scene of people already singing as there's karaoke for the whole bar when you first enter. There's a fully stocked bar too, where you can get a variety of drinks to keep yourself inebriated during the night. If you and your friends are looking for something more private, you can rent out a room. The pricing is very reasonable at $40/hour. The rooms are spacious and could easily fit 10 people comfortably. The walls are soundproof so not only will you not hear anyone else, they won't hear you. Service here is great too as we were able to get our drinks fairly quickly. Boombox is not too rowdy, as you might expect from some bars, and is actually rather tame. What an interesting spot. I was out with "friendomers" and their wives and mine last night. After a wine tasting at Flemings, drinks at The Dorrance and then dinner on Federal hill, one of the guys decided we were going to Karaoke tonight. Most of us were reluctant, but our friend can be very persuasive so we ended up hopping in another Uber. We arrived around 9:45 and the place was already fairly full. The good news is that we were still able to get a few spots on the couches that line the performance area. We were surprised that they only serve beer and saki....what a combo! We all grabbed a drink and were handed a book of the available karaoke songs; they have A LOT of songs! I was told that they charge $1 per song, which is something I've never heard of before, but oh well! About an hour or so after submitting my song request we had seen the same groups of people singing every other song. I'm guessing they have a computer system that arranges who is going to sing what/when based on when they put the request in. The problem with this system is that people can load up on songs and people who arrive later have a very long wait. Long story short....it's a young crowd of people with fairly good voices. They could use liquor there, but not a huge deal. I probably wouldn't stop by again, but if I was 15 years younger I likely would! read more

I brought some friends from out-of-town out for karaoke at the Boombox last night. We were hoping to chill in the main room where the bar is but a bridal party was dominating the area so we ended up renting a private room. It was $60 for 1 hour. The bar doesn't serve food, but you can bring your own. The primary drink available is sake. I like this place, but wish there was more seating in the bar area. It's also REALLY loud. Turning the music down a few bars would improve the overall experience. read more

It was so fun! We stopped in on a whim after seeing Water Fire, and although all the rooms were booked, you can still hang out in the lobby with everyone else and song are only $1! Bartender was really nice and drinks are good and strong. Had lots of fun! Good fun with good people. read more
