I took a great tour this afternoon, but felt the need to find a nighttime tour in order to maximize my time out here. At first I looked at another ghost tour that caught my eye, but after reading Yelp reviews I realized that I wanted more of a historical walking tour, instead of being scared in a graveyard. I might be brave enough to try that next time, but this time I wanted to get more history in my tour! I checked out the Yelp reviews and saw that several Elites loved this tour, so I decided to check it out. At $15, it was less than half the price of the other one! I gave them a call, and the gentleman I talked to was super-friendly and helped me buy a ticket for the tour that started in 10 minutes! He helped this n00b with excellent directions (and even helped me when I was at the site and completely lost over the phone). From the start I knew I was going to love it. Our tour guide, Chris, was clear about the fact that he himself was skeptical, and even gave us some psychology lessons about things like why would we connect a story to paranormal events, see faces in a photo, or think that unrelated events might be related. It wasn't about scaring me, it was about letting me think logically about why the heck I was so invested in the story. This tactic worked well for me because I was able to really enjoy the tour, knowing that they would give me both the fun story side and the awesome logical side. I also loved that they brought us to related sites, instead of bringing us to an alley and then telling us about an unrelated ghost story alley. At the end, we went to the Boston Common (my first time there was at night, yay!). I won't go into too much detail of what happened, but even skeptics there were starting to gasp and move away from their measurement tools. The tour even went a little longer because they wanted to show us more, so I got even MORE out of my money. I will always recommend this to any tourists coming to Boston. While on vacation with my husband I checked Groupon Now to discover that this tour was one of the offers for the day. We decided to go on it and are very glad we did. We met the guide outside Faneuil Hall for an 8pm tour. I'd say about 30 people showed up but they had 2 guides and broke up the group into 2. Our guide Jim was awesome. He does Freedom Trail tours during the day so he really knows his stuff. The tour was a perfect mix of historical facts, humor, and ghost-hunting. Jim delivered ghost-hunting info in a non-hoaky, factual but interesting way way that even got skeptics like me thinking "Hm maybe this stuff is real." The tour started at Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall, then the Old State House, down to the Omni-Parker Hotel (the most haunted building in Boston, where you get to go inside and up to a haunted floor), then to the Granary burying ground, and to Boston Common where you try to communicate with spirits by site of the old Hanging Elm. Not scary/creepy, just a little chilling. You're around graveyards at night but nothing will pop out at you or try to scare you. There were 10 year olds on our tour and they weren't scared, tour was appropriate for them. Tour was $15 bucks without the Groupon, I thought it was worth that. Highly recommended! read more

My boyfriend and I braved the coldest, rainiest night of the year so far to take this tour, because I wasn't about to let my groupon expire! It was totally worth it! Chris, our tour guide, was awesome. He's obviously got a passion for what he does and it shows. The negative reviewer here obviously didn't read even the slightest bit about this tour before signing up. Apparently learning something was a little too much work for them. Anyway, since the weather was absolutely awful, Chris made an effort to keep us in warm dry spaces for most of the stories he told us. It would have been nice to be able to actually stand outside more of the buildings we were learning about, but the weather just wasn't having it. I really liked his approach. He's a skeptic, and he wasn't shy about saying so. He also didn't make you feel silly for being a believer (or in my case, something in between). The stories he told were really interesting and i learned some things about Boston, and places i've walked by countless times, that i didn't know. I liked that the stories were not sensationalized just to make it scary. I wanted to learn the real stuff. We spent some time in the Omni Parker House hotel, which was awesome.Then we ended the night at Stoddards, a place I never knew was there but am very glad to have learned about! The paranormal investigation experiments we did were a lot of fun and a little creepy. Overall, it was a great experience, and i'm glad I dragged myself out in the freezing cold for it! Being a Boston resident and someone who's not into cheesy haunted house tours, I bought the Groupon pass for this tour because I figured it was cheap, it was Halloween season, and at least my history buff husband would have a good time. I am so glad I went! Chris, our guide, told great stories that skeptics and believers alike could enjoy, and at the end of the tour, we communicated with ghosts in the Boston Common, and it even got me a little spooked! It was fun, totally worth the money, and made me a little less skeptical. The service at the ticket booth and from Chris was amazing! You can tell they really want everyone to have a good time. The negative reviewers clearly did not visit the Boston Night Tour website to read about the tour beforehand. My boyfriend and I LOVED this tour. I'm a native Bostonian but I still learned so much about the city's history. Andrew wasn't cheesy or over the top at all. He was an excellent story teller, giving us all the facts (including reasons to be skeptical) and let us come to conclusions on our own, which made it all the scarier when I realized that these ghosts are TOTALLY REAL. Well, maybe. It's fun to get caught up and believe, and some of what Andrew said was pretty freaking amazing. Are you ready to have chills sent down your spine? I did this last fall (with the Groupon) and recommend it to any Boston resident or tourist visiting during the Halloween season! This will be particularly up the alley of history buffs and those who are curious about paranormal experiences--not so much so if you are interested in ghost gags (this is not a haunted house). Our tour guide engaged in a little trash talk about the other ghost tour companies out there, making fun of one that takes you into one of the graveyards, only to have other tour company employees jump out at you and scare you. I didn't really do my research before selecting this company, so I was actually expecting cheap gimmicks like that, but got something much better. I agree with Allison K.: this is suitable for kids. It's spooky, but not horrifying or gory/graphic. There were a few kids (approximately age 9-12) in our group and they seemed fine. The tour guide drew them in with some jokes and they stayed interested the whole time. Our group was big but our guide (I'm pretty sure it was Jim based on the other reviews here) projected well and was engaging. I was a skeptic at the beginning, but by the end he really had me wondering. There were definitely a few Twilight Zone moments, and months later, my fiance and I are still retelling the story about the Omni Parker House. read more

I had a blast on this tour!!! Our guide Jim was very energetic and knowledgable on Boston's history. I'm a Boston native and I learned so much about its past that I never knew before. And I'm honestly not a history buff at all but Jim really tells such interesting stories and had my attention the entire time. Our tour lasted 2 hours so we really got a bang for our buck. My husband and I did the Boston Night Tour on Friday night, and it was amazing. Kaitlin was our delightful and friendly guide. We started right on time outside Bank of America, and our tour lasted 90 minutes. We had a group of 12, which was very intimate, so that was great. We passed other ghost tours that had upwards of 30 people! We bought a groupon for this tour, so it was only $19 altogether for my husband and me. (Way cheaper than the $40 asked for by other ghost tours.) Kaitlin was extremely intuitive regarding volume. She seamlessly increased her volume when trucks passed or when a plane flew over, but adjusted down when it was quieter. I don't know if she has a script or what, but every story was expertly told, which emphasized the creepy factor in a great way. Kaitlin also handled interruptions with dexterity. It never seemed like she missed a beat if interrupted by a tour member or passerby. She would respond to the situation, then effortlessly transition back into the story. And her storytelling was just amazing! She knew exactly how to enthrall an audience and still inject a bit of showmanship. We had tons of questions in between each site, and Kaitlin was more than happy to answer. She was a wealth of information. This is a ghost tour, not a historical tour, so don't be surprised if details differ some when you go look it up on the internet. Kaitlin even told us at the beginning that it's up to us as to whether or not these stories are accurate/true. This ended up being our favorite thing we did in Boston, so be sure to do it, too! read more

Don't waste your money taking a trolley, when you can stroll with Jeremiah Poope. An engaging, funny, and articulate storyteller, Jeremiah lead us to famous and off-the-beaten-path locations. Stories were not horribly frightening, so the tour is appropriate for families. The walk could be challenging for some as we were up hills, down narrow sidewalks, and over bricks. Many stops along the way however, so no worries around cardio fitness. My husband rolled his eyes when I booked the tour, but he loved every minute. Truly worth the money. By far the worst Groupon that I have ever purchased. I would have gotten more out of spending this money on virtually anything else. I want to say up front that I am not a history buff and would never take a historical walking tour of Boston and would certainly not have a good time on the Freedom Trail tour. With that being said, I bought this tour on Groupon because it was promoted as a ghost tour and I figured it would be something fun and in-season to do leading up to Halloween. First of all, there seems to be no cap on how many people they will sign up to do each tour. We had over 25 people traipsing around Boston at night after one tour guide. There was no personal interaction and while the tour guide had a loud voice so you could hear him, it was more like listening to a shouted lecture. Now to talk about the tour guide. I have certainly been on tours of other things in my day. They are not my cup of tea, but it is usually the tour guide who ends up being at least somewhat engaging, fast-paced, and funny. Tour guides usually know that their material can easily end up being boring if delivered without spunk. Chris, the tour guide that we had on this Ghost Tour, was horrible. He was repetitive, made jokes that nobody laughed at, and frankly, was nothing but a blowhard. He would rehash one story for over 20 minutes - something that could be condensed down to an interesting 4 or 5 minutes. We had only walked a few hundred feet and made 2 stops after 1 hour of the tour because this guy just did not know how to condense or stop talking. He was clearly a history buff - but that's not what we were there for! People were talking amongst themselves and looking at the office buildings around us just to have something to do until he finished. Lastly, to address the "Ghost Tour" aspect of it. Like I said, I booked this tour specifically for the "Ghost"s. I don't believe in that kind of thing, but I wanted to hear about the hauntings of Boston because that is the sort of thing to do in late October. I wasn't expecting some corny zombies jumping out at me or some fake chains rattling in the distance. I just wanted some momentary ooohs and aaahs over scary stories told in the places that they supposedly happened. Haha - this could not have been further from what actually happened. Chris the tour guide felt that it was his duty to disprove every single haunted or ghostly story he told us. He went on and on (as was his style) about how this and that had no historical data to back it, how the Institute of XYZ in Australia tested it and it was proved false, how people who believed in this stuff were, basically, idiots. Again, I don't believe in the stuff but BOY what a buzzkill that guy was. I just couldn't believe he was paid to do that. After 1 hour, a handful of us (different parties) ended up ditching the tour and going to have dessert at a nearby restaurant. We just couldn't endure any more of Chris. I wish I could get my money back!! read more

A ruined family night!!! I scheduled a tour with The Boston Night Tour and the guide was a no show. What a let down!!! My family and another family who were also waiting for this tour were all disappointed!! I called the number that they have listed and it was to their location in Salem, MA. Spoke to Kevin and all he can say is I'm trying to get a hold of the owner!! No call back nothing!!! I tried calling the number again and no answer!!! What a surprise!! I checked my account and of course they have already charged my credit card!! Furthermore, I called to get a refund and they claimed to have credited my account but never did. Please save yourself a let down and seek another ghost tour!! read more

Chris was awesome. The BEST tour guide I have ever been on a tour with (and I take a lot of tours). I was on the same tour as Lindsay with the negative review below, and I remember her "group"...the disruptive bunch of drunks who showed up smashed and ruined the first 2 stops. After they left, this tour was incredible. Chris filled us in on a LOT of the haunted history of Boston...not by telling spooky stories, but by telling us about what people claimed to have actually seen, and explaining what it might or might not be. Being able t perform some of the fun experiments I have seen on Ghost Adventures was really a cool aspect of this tour and the flashlight session at the end really surprised everyone in the group (after the troublemakers left). Chris is also a master story-teller. Some of the spookiest moments of this tour were how he matter-of-factly shared historical facts with reports of ghost activity, and then peppered the mood with some light humor. Our tour ran a little late, but that was mostly because we were all having a lot of fun chatting and sharing our own stories as we wandered through the city. Thanks Chris for a GREAT time! read more

I had a lot of fun with this tour. I got a Living Social deal from my friend and I'm glad I took it. Our guide, Dan, is very friendly and is willing to give out many stories about the paranormal. He encourages us to be very skeptical about ghosts and told us stories to make us believe in them. At the end of the tour, we get to try to talk to a ghost. Although, nothing happened when I went, it was still pretty cool to see how ghosthunters do it. I think it would have been spookier around Halloween to do this. read more

Worth the 10$ you pay. It's quite a short walk really, about a quarter mile from Quincy Market to the Common. The ghost stories can all be looked up on your phone so the tour really isn't necessary. However it is the only ghost tour in Boston that takes you inside the infamous Omni Parker Hotel, that alone might be a good reason to go. read more

my wife and i went on this tour as a small part of our honeymoon in boston in march of 2010. we were greeted by 2 very knowledgeable tour guides by the quincy market near the harbor. to our delight, we were the only two people on the tour (i assume because it was march, it probably picks up during the summer) anyway, we visited several different spots around the freedom trail, and learned many interesting facts about boston's history (both from this world and the paranormal- the guides were great storytellers) we ended the tour in the boston common with an attempt (and success?) at communicating with a spirit while holding emf meters... like on tv! it was definitely a different way to enjoy a saturday night in boston. great price too. read more

So being a transplanted local of Boston, you wouldn't think to take a tour but honestly that's the best way to learn about your city. We had met Jim on accident earlier in the summer, and found him to be extremely knowledgeable and nice, that's how we decided to take the tour. The tour isn't your run of the mill, scare you for cheap thrills ghost tour. It's very much the opposite, it's a great tour of Boston with some excellent myths and legends. Living here you don't think much about the history till you actually go out and see it. The best part is that you get to handle some real equipment and learn about how it all works, but still get a great tour of Boston. Terrible customer service. I bought 3 tickets for us for July 12th, but had to cancel 5 hours before the tour due to the family emergency. I called to cancel and wrote a letter to a manager, Tim, asking for refund, as advised by the phone representative. No responce. Since then I called three times, each time being promiced Tim will call me to discuss the refund - nada, no reply, no call. I will be contacting BBB about this issue. First stop at the Boston massacre: well you all know what happened here, lets move on. What! Went on this tour last night and really enjoyed it! Kaitlin was our tour guide and she was energetic, animated, and friendly! There were only 8 of us in this group which made it extremely intimate and easy to hear the stories. Kaitlin was there promptly at 7:45 and began promptly at 8.
