The vibe of this place is so fun! You're in a castle and the inside looks medieval?? Genius. The campus pub is a fun place to chill with friends and celebrate post class. The drinks here are decently priced and if you ask the bartender at the front to make you a fun cocktail, he will! I don't know what I drank but it was delicious and tasted like summer! I went for a trivia night one time and it was really cute, definitely go early to get seats though because it was crazy packed! Came here with some friends on a Friday evening. Parking after 6 was plentiful for me near the pub since the meters run until 6pm. This review pertains to the food only. They updated this place since I was here last and I do agree with the other reviewers that it lost a lot of its charm in the process. Menu is very simple and sparse though the price is reasonable (at the cost of some quality unfortunately). Ordering was done exclusively through a touch screen for food. It's cumbersome and I would advise to research beforehand what you want because the line can get long. Seating is a free for all and on a Friday night it was only by sheer luck that me and my 3 friends were able to get one. Items that I tried: Fried chicken sandwich - $9 as of 9/19. One word... dry. No sign of any brine used for the chicken. It was dry and very tough to chew. Would not recommend. Tot-Chos - $9 as of 9/19. It's tater tots. Nothing special but at least it was palatable. Loaded Nachos - $9 as of 9/19. Again this was average. It wasn't layered very well so the chips on the bottom had nothing on them. Chips were unsalted and very plain tasting. This being a university pub it was obviously filled with students. It was LOUD in there so forget having a audible conversation with anyone that's not immediately next to you. Also there wasn't anyone I could see that would clean the tables up so expect to clean up the table you want if the previous party didn't bother. This place used to be dope but they "updated" it and removed all the personality. Save yourself some time and just go to the dining hall. It literally looks like the dining hall now instead of a cool hangout for bu peeps. The benches are red vinyl and the chairs look like something copied from the GSU. There were little kids (elementary aged children) running around. Is this a lame dining hall? Yes. The menu is completely gone. The new menu has none of the funny sandwiches. Only burgers and one chili option. Generic bar food you could get anywhere else. Bring back the professor!!! The huge sandwich menu with all the BU names was cool - new menu is airport bland. I pretty much lived here during school. It's a relatively reasonably priced place for drinks and sandwiches. The atmosphere was super chill and cool for us BU crowds. But they sort of remodeled and the atmosphere now is pretty bla. The red seating does the place no good. I'm glad I graduated and spent most of my time in school pre-renovation. read more

Overall, a nice spot. Decently priced food and drinks. They mostly provide sandwiches and salads. It was recently renovated, and the current menu is fairly limited compared to its offering prior to the renovation. The renovation really improved the inside space, though. They enlarged the seating area, and there's plenty of natural light due to the windows overlooking the Charles. It lost a bit of its underground charm - the new space is a bit sterile. But happy for more seating. You can order your food at a kiosk, which is a cool addition. Drinks all have to be ordered at the bar, though. There are TVs, but mostly in the cramped bar area, so not a great spot to watch a game. Good hang out for friends though. read more

On the plus side, the beer selection is impressive, and the recently remodeled patio offers a bright space along the Charles (I personally preferred the darker "castle" feel before the remodel, but that's just a personal preference). I came midday during the week, when it was fairly empty. It was my first time visiting since the remodel, so it took me a while to figure out where and how I was supposed to order. The bartender simply watched while my friend and I walked back and forth between the bar and the (out of order) touchscreen ordering display, until I finally asked him for help. I was disappointed to find the menu had been significantly changed (no more build-your-own-sandwich option or huge list of sandwiches with BU-themed names), but I remained optimistic and hoped the food would be good. The bartender was not particularly friendly or helpful, but I guess I'd be the same way if I had to deal with college kids the time. Again, I was still optimistic. My hope finally vanished when I tried my burger--it looked and tasted like a typical frozen patty, and the bread and toppings were equally unimpressive. It wasn't terrible, but I'll avoid eating here in the future (unless I've had a few too many beers). Fairly small and stuffy pub where there are hoards of students in their crowds trying to have a fun time. I can't imagine meeting any new people here since everyone sticks to their own cliques and don't mingle much. There's also a line to get drinks, although it's a very orderly line and isn't on a walk-up-anywhere-and-hope-the-bartender-sees-you basis. There was a long list of beers and I wanted to try a local one, draft, so I picked one at random. It was good but since I don't remember what it's called, I don't think I'll ever get to try it again. They also have free pub mix and I enjoyed it with my beer-had a bit of a kick to it though so some people might consider it spicy. I'd like to remove stars for the number of awkward moments I have shared here, the fact that it is impossible to avoid people I know, and it is just generally full of plastered law students on Friday afternoons trying to cope with their miserable, meaningless, money-grabbing, ambulance-chasing existence. Not that I'm bitter or anything. Guess it can't be helped. Cash only - bugs me. And if you go at a popular student rush hour, the lines take for EVER. The food is actually quite fun...and the sandwiches are all also named after fields of study and degrees. It's fun to be able to order a future( husband) I will never have and credentials that I can't even dream of. "I'll have the PhD, please- er, wait, scratch that, just give me a politician - or do I want an economist?" The beer selection is good. And you can get knighted for drinking all of them. It's a fun way to spend what small pittance is left of your federal Staford loans. Not that I'm bitter or anything. I also enjoy the placement and decor, even if it is only the basement of what BU calls the castle. First of all, I went to Brandeis for undergrad and Brandeis has a CASTLE. This is just...a chateau, in my opinion. But it's a pretty chateau, and the pub is set up with dark, hardwood panels and ores and some of that old school alma mater charm that you expect from college/law school before you show up and realize that you're surrounded by glorious, waffle-ceilinged, concrete, Brutalist architecture from the 1960s. I imagine that at one point people in berets and turtlenecks used to sit there smoking, discussing epistemology and playing chess before education became a commodity. Now it's mostly frat boys. But its frat boys surrounded by wood paneling. Not that I'm bitter or anything. The view from the terrace is also quite lovely, and it's even fun to stand outside there in the snow, freezing your ass off in a coat, because you can see all the hotels over memorial reflecting off the Charles when it's half iced over, and when the branches all have no leaves...It makes you remember why New England is called New England for like...2 or 3 minutes before someone inside starts drunkenly shouting about the Redsox or something. Not that I'm bitter or anything. If you know what kind of environment you're getting and want it, go. There's a certain air of exclusivity since you have to be a BU student or a friend of one. You'll see professors outside their natural habitat. It has an old-school academic feel. It's just...easy to get sick of if you're actually a student at BU. read more

Boston's best kept secret! What a great space inside and out. I love that you can view the Charles from the outside patio. The man at the bar was very helpful! I'd like to see what this place looks and feels like packed. It was pretty much empty when I was there. BU Students are so lucky they have this gem on campus. The sandwiches here are delicious and cheap. They have fun sandwiches named after different professions, or you have the option of making your own sandwich. They have a ton of breads, meats, toppings to choose from. You also get a side of chips or pretzels with your sandwich. The bar selection here is pretty fantastic. They have so many bottled beers and beers on tap that they created the Knights Quest. People who try all the beers they have at the bar are "knighted." Plus the beer here is SO CHEAP. Extra brownie points for that! Seating can be limited sometimes. The line for beer can get kinda long, and there is usually only one guy behind the bar. The sandwiches can take a while, but they are totally worth the wait. I love the look and the charm of this place. It's definitely one of my favorite spots in Boston. read more

Best bar on campus. Seriously, this place got TEH roxor. It's in a damn castle, first off. Well, the BU castle, anyway. It's downstairs on the side of the building, across from Hillel House, on Granby Street. The ceilings are low, but the solid wood paneled walls, the two flat screen TVs, and the chill atmosphere are just right for a drink after class or work. You do generally have to be either a BU student, staff member, or a guest of one of the above to get in, though. There's a decent amount of space to sit, a dart board towards the front, and a sweet patio open during the spring and summer months. The pub doesn't have a huge menu, but what they do have is great - solid pub sandwiches with a bit of cheesy humor baked into them (you could get the "archeologist!" or the "PhD!" or "the failure!"). For my money, I usually just grab a tuna melt and a bag of pretzels, but all of their sandwiches are good. The nachos aren't bad either, although there are better places in the city to go if you want nachos specifically. The pub is really gonna win on atmosphere. This really is the type of place that grad students will go with their professors after an evening class to drink. If you've ever wanted to see a tenured researcher drunkenly serenade people with Cat Stevens, the pub is going to be a good friend of yours. Trivia used to be on Tuesday nights, and it always got a solid crowd of seniors trying to look older than they were, grad students, and staff members meeting up with old friends after work. It was good times - the questions were fiendish and the game went on long enough for everyone to get a little tipsy. Probably the most renowned part of the pub are the Knight's and Lord's quests: a lifelong journey to drink each of the different beers or mixed drinks they have available, respectively. For those bold enough to take the journey, the pub staff will give you a card to keep in your wallet to track the drinks you've had. Unless you have an epic constitution, the Knight's quest is usually a year-long or longer trek. When you've finally imbibed all of the challengers, the pub will knight you in a hilarious ceremony involving your friends making fun of you, and getting a specialized tankard for your future ALE purchases. I myself never quite had the patience for the quest, because I don't want to drink the shitty beers that you have to in order to complete it. Even if you aren't the questing type, the pub has almost 50 beers available any given night, and the vast majority of them don't suck. Because the pub is only open to those 21 and up, it's a great place to go on campus if you DON'T want to deal with the more irritating aspects of drunken undergrads. By the time they get to 21, most seniors have had a couple of epic, passed-out binges and this isn't the place they try to recreate those experiences. The pub is also not, in my experience, a particularly great location to pick someone up - it's a hang-out with friends sort of place, not a 'get your swerve on' one. The one problem with the pub is its weird hours, especially during the summer. Always check online to see if they are actually open before making the trek over to Granby, especially if you don't live on/near campus. read more

In my time at BU, I've discovered that there are two kinds of people: the kind of people who love the Pub, and keep going back, and the kind of people who don't really care about the Pub, and go elsewhere. I'm in the first group, as are most of my friends. (And if you go to the Pub frequently, you've definitely met some of my friends.) The Pub is a great place to go and hang out and talk, because it's almost always quiet enough to have an actual conversation, rather than shouting over the din, and casual enough that you don't have to get dressed up for it. We've tried to go out to other places, yet we always end up at the Pub because it's so great. It's also a great place to meet alumni- a lot of my friends have graduated in the last few years ('04-'08), and most of us who stayed in the area still frequent the Pub, and bring out-of-town alumni there when they visit. The alcohol is reasonably priced compared to other places, and the sandwiches are still delicious. (FYI current students: sandwiches really come out of your Dining Points, not Convenience Points.) It's definitely a dinner/pregame spot on Fridays, so unless there's a ton of Knightings/Lordings going on that night, it empties out as people move on to other places, so you can grab a nice big table and have some casual, true Pub-style beer-and-conversation with a group of your friends. The Pub should (but I can't bring myself to do it) lose a star for the new/constantly changing management. I preferred the chips loose in the sandwich basket rather than in single-serve bags, the sandwich order line was better when it wasn't computerized/always broken, and Bartender's Choice drinks should always, always be free. Their "summer hours" are lame, and I don't recall a Kick the Keg night this August. All in all, Pub = awesome. My friends and I will be going there until we're so old, we'll be using Ensure in our White Russians instead of milk. UPDATE: As of this week (9/5/08), they removed the Lord's Quest (and took down the plaques for all the previous Lords) and shortened the Knight's Quest to 50 beers (down from 60-64.) They are accepting complaints in the "How Are We Doing?" box, and if you're a far-flung alum who's particularly motivated, you can mail them in. As of 11/19/08, they were phasing out letting Knights keep their mugs at the Pub, and fired the student bartenders...bartenders may no longer be students. The Pub used to be the place to be around BU campus, but has since taken a turn for the worse. A once-lovable den of wood paneling, dim lighting, wonderful food, and astounding selection of drink served by enthusiastic young bartenders has turned into a brightly-lit, glossy, understocked, understaffed, under-managed nightmare. Regulars of many years have been complaining not just about the service, which has become so lousy many old-timers have given up on the place entirely, but the quality of food, once legendary, and the drink selection. A once-proud Quest of 64 beers has been castrated to 50, of which almost 10 are Sam Adams-es, Coors, and Heineken. The whiskey selection, once spanning at least 20 bottles at any given time, is reduced to the pathetic standard-issue Jim, Johnnie, Jack, Dewars, and Makers. In its place are countless flavored vodkas. Did I mention the service? Despite reconfiguring the bar and adding a register, the new staff has no idea how to run down a line quickly, and the idiotic food ordering system has yet to be resolved. Still, you can use points for food, and they now take cards. Though why you would pay 6bucks for a BLT with 3 pieces of bacon on it is beyond me. Aramark has finally succeeded in turning the Pub into a glorified dining hall that just happens to serve drinks. It can't be too much longer before they close the doors for good. read more

Great place to grab so drinks and relax on off nights. A couple of buddies and I went on a tuesday and had a great time. Drinks are cheap and there is an AWESOME selection. They have two dart boards, real ones, not those silly rubber tipped ones. All that said, the food is pretty weak. Really just an extension of BU on campus food. It is cheap so I guess it's tough to complain, but do not expect much in terms of food quality. The decor is pretty nice for a classic type of pub. I've come here a few times for lunch but I've never really been satisfied, so I think today was my last visit. Pros: - On campus, very convenient - Cheap for the area ($7 sandwiches, pretty standard) - Ambiance (it's in the basement of the castle) - Outdoor patio is cute Cons: - The lines are always super long - Not enough bar tenders, it seems like every time I've gone, they've had to call someone specially from some mysterious place in the back to serve us -- at 12:30pm, which is prime lunch hour! - The ordering process is confusing -- go up to the deli counter, note your selection on a sheet of paper, walk over to the bar, realize there is no bar tender, but supposedly you need to pay here first, pay, go back to the deli counter to drop the paper off... ugh! - Food takes a long time to come out, considering it's just a sandwich - Small tables, not good for large groups unless you get lucky and get one of the two larger tables - They check your BU Id and your regular Id, which takes a while. So maybe my biggest gripe is just the time it takes to get lunch here? To get a single sandwich, I end up standing in THREE LINES: the ID check place, the bar so that I can pay, and then the deli counter... Yes, you can have a beer with your lunch here. The BU pub holds a spot in my heart so near and dear, it brings a tear to my eye. Knighting, Lording, and trivia all in that gorgeous Castle of ours. Ah yes. This is one of the few perks of being married to an alum. We love taking out of town guests to this hidden gem. We always feel very in-the-know and guests always say they feel like they are entering Hogwarts. While Butter Beer is not on tap about a thousand other beers are. The pub grub is great--- nothing fancy but hits the spot. Serious cheap eats in a quite extraordinary spot. Parking can be VERY scarce especially during Sox home games. And forget about getting a table when classes get out. But if you can find that sweet spot time, it's heaven. And don't forget your BU ID, or a friends who has one, and your license. One of the greatest things about being a former BU student is the pub. No other school that I know of has their own pub. It's a pretty awesome perk. In fact when I was a student there I came very close to being knighted (completing a "Quest" of 52 drinks) but then went abroad my last semester and screwed my chances. I even shot a short film at the Pub! It's closed on weekends, which is the only downside, but that allowed my short film a chance to be made there! They have incredible sandwiches, each named after a profession. They also have a pretty badass selection of beers. I'm almost sad to review the mysterious BU Pub. Located under the castle (yes, there's a CASTLE on Bay State Road and a bar in the basement - that's so cool right there), this place is for students and alumni only (so if you're nice to me, you can be my guest). As a student, I loved coming here to meet friends in between classes for a famous sandwich, all named after BU majors (I always went for The Engineer). The dark wood walls, old memorabilia and cozy corners - this place was warm and welcoming. We would so easily loose time just hanging out and laughing. Sure, the service was a bit slow, but we didn't care. Now, as an alumni, I still choose this place as a favorite to meet up with old classmates after work for a beer. The BU pub is a nice place to grab a bite. I went there with others from my graduate program to celebrate the end of the first semester. It was a bit hectic for a group...since you have to fill out your order on a slip we all got our orders at different times. I also didn't hear the server call my order so my food sat cold for awhile...It's not their fault really but if you notice a plate sitting for awhile you should say the name again...louder. The bartenders were nice and there was a good selection of beers and drinks. The food was good pub food, a nice diverse menu of sandwiches, nachos, chicken wings and so forth. Would definitely go back since it's not super busy and great way to grab some chow and get back to work. Fun pub for BU students. Comes with lots of lounge chairs, high tables, and even a darts section. It's a good time to get drunk with friends in a casual setting and an opportunity to meet new people. The drinks are definitely overpriced. Paid $10 for a Tequila Sunrise with hardly any tequila in it. Not worth the money; the beer I got before got me drunker than that. We went here on a Thursday, so I'm not sure how it is on other nights. From the atmosphere, I imagine it gets pretty poppin on the weekends. It's in the basement of the BU castle and creeping in through the side door makes me feel like I'm in a secret society... hee hee. The wood paneled walls give it warmth and character that is conspicuously missing from BU's other buildings. They have a good beer selection - yeah, none of that Natty Ice business - and if you're particularly motivated, you can embark on a quest to drink 52 and be "knighted" (still working on that). Their signature sandwiches are yummy and have names like "The Archeologist" "The Doctor" "The PhD," and the maps of Ireland provide ample entertainment while you savor them. read more

If you went to Boston University you should be familiar with this place, if you go there now and you're not... find it! The Pub is also simply called The Castle, any BU student can point you in the right direction, or maybe they can't? This was a Thursday night MUST for me during my GSM days in the mid 90's. The great thing about Boston, I went back for the first time in 15 years and not a thing changed. Same wood panelled watering hole, but with two upgraded televisions. It has a certain mystic feeling, beginning with the big wood door and Gothic sign (pub rules) out front. Important, only BU ID carrying students or alumni are allowed behind the wooden door into the bowels of the castle. Why is it solid? Good variety of beers, great sandwiches, yes sandwiches, and a fun BU crowd, including administrators. If you throw darts, you're covered on that front also. I go for the failure or turkey club each time. The beer is selection is better than a lot of bars in Boston. With the new management, they have deals on drinks and the food selection is increasing. Some people complain that BU lacks a sense of community. But I feel like...everybody knooooows my naaaaaame at this place. My roommates place reserves this place on random Fridays each month. This is a really fun place to come after work if you're BU staff or faculty. It's neat to see a place where students, faculty, staff, and even the Deans raise their glasses together. On any given night, you might even bump into Dean Elmore here! They have a fantastic selection of beers from all over the country and the world. Try the "Knight's Quest"! If you have one of every 50 beers on the menu, you'll get "Knighted." It's basically one of those "mug clubs" that lots of pubs have. They periodically change the beers on the menu, but it's done by number...so if you already had #6 on the menu but they change what #6 is before you complete your quest, you still get credit for it. They've got some pretty good food, too. I've even come here for lunch when I'm working. Really good sandwiches and soup. When the weather is warm, they open the patio and set up a grill to cook burgers and dogs. It's a private club only for students, faculty, staff, and Alumni, and their guests. They do check ID...not just state ID for proof of age, but BU ID for proof of affiliation with the school. If you are not affiliated with BU, you must be accompanied by someone who is. GOD, I wish I was still in college. I used to frequent the pub at least twice a week, before or after class. There's nothing better than going to class a little tipsy with a stomach full with chips and turkey with pesto spread on grilled foccacia, my old standby. I've never been interested in any of the sandwiches listed on the menu wall, but I do enjoy the names. Sadly, I was never knighted, but I sure spent enough time here with friends. Ahhhhhh...memories. I frequented the Pub many a day during and after my time as a BU student. After class, any day of the week, the Pub guaranteed a solid bite and at times, a relatively quiet place to hang out that was outside of a dining hall, the GSU or nearby CAS (where I, along with a million other students) went to school. Unfortunately I wasn't one who caught on to the trend of trying ever beer they offer to gain a certain bit of notoriety, but I wasn't upset about it all. There's a great selection, the staff is polite, and they're fairly quick with preparing your food (although there can be quite a delay depending on what day/time) when you walk into the oaky, dark Pub. There's great BU memorabilia hanging from the walls and you're bound to see some professors here on occasion. The outdoor seating area is a must when Boston decides to get over the snowy season, so definitely try to get a spot outside if you can. It's been some time since I've been here since graduation, but I do have fond memories with BU pals. Don't forget to bring one along with you - you'll need them to get through the door. read more

I give a 5 stars to BU Pub NOT because it's great pub, but it's the pub of my alma mater. When I was at BU for undergrad, I did run into many graduate students there...(i guess they think it's a cool place or they just don't know anywhere else.) Unlike the undergrad kids, by the 3rd yr, you know Boston pretty well already, so even tho you are 21, you won't be hanging out at the BU Pub that often. (Hence there are better places to go to.) BU Pub is great to drink with your professors. Yes, your professors. I asked many of my professors to hang out with a bunch of students right before we graduated, they came because it's a campus pub. Honestly, the beer & stuff ain't bad at all. I would have given it a 3-4 already. read more

You need to be a faculty member/staff, a student, an alumni, or with someone who is one of the previous three in order to get in here. So there's already a sense of privilege just being able to walk through the doors here, which I kind of love. I came here frequently while I was getting my MA after any particularly hard class. It's in the bottom of a castle, so that's also pretty awesome. They have a number of sandwiches that are named after different majors and professions, or you can make your own sandwich. They've got a ton of options and I've always found their food to be delicious. They also have more beers than you can shake a stick at. Because apparently I'm 50 years old now and say things like that. But really, they have a ton of beer. They also have a knight quest that you can embark on, in which you have to drink 50 beers on a list and then you get knighted and get your own glass to use whenever you want which I think is cheaper than buying beers. Don't quote me on that last bit there though. Fairly frequently they have different breweries come in to sample beer, and sometimes they give away swag, I've gotten a few glasses out of it before. Long story short, go...if you can! If you can't, maybe I'll be nice enough to bring you as my guest. read more

I'm a big fan. This little guy is tucked away inside "the castle" of BU, and open only to students, faculty, alumni, and their personal guests. It is decorated with pieces of memorabilia from BU sports teams of the past, and has many low-sitting tables varying in seating capacity as well as a corner seating area with a couch. One star docked because drinks seem a tad overpriced, considering this place is geared towards students/recent alumni. My friends and I spotted the dartboards after hanging about a bit and had a blast playing darts the rest of the night. Good location to have a drink and the food is pretty good, but the main problem is actually getting your meal. Like another reviewer said, I gave the cashier my phone number so I would know when my food was ready, but I never received a message. I went up to the counter half an hour after I placed my order only to find my food sitting there, cold. read more

When I went to BU, I used to come here for a few, and always thought it was damn cool. If not only because the bar is inside a castle, but also because their sandwiches KICK ASS. Try the chicken salad one...dee-lish! And then, I actually landed a jobby-job as a bartender at the BU Pub for awhile. Talk about a fun job. Only a place like the BU Pub could get away with darkly lit, borderline-creepy, 17th century style with faux wood paneling everywhere.
